i have the RTR ... only thing i changed was moving to a more aggressive tire tread. Best advice I've ever heard "The best RC car is the one that puts the biggest smile on your face."
I changed mine over to the narrow axles and a 3 gear trans and you're definitely right about the Spare Time Hobby skid. I had to scratch my head for a few minutes.
Took a Capra put the axles in a spare time hobbies chassis and threw in a stealth x enduro trans. It worked surprisingly well for having some beers and doing it while watching you and josh on a Wednesday 😂
loving my capra. its my go to comp truck. i went with the UCFab skid and servo bracket and full VP transmission with dig. i also added club5 racing links and stretched the 1.9 tires over some 2.2 machetes. great build! the F9s definitely look good under that cage
I’ve seen some Axial Capra running videos. It looks like a super capable rig right out of the box. Obviously you can always find ways to improve them though!!
My rig has a Mamba x crawler edition with a 1900kv motor,95 grams front portals,King shocks with faux resevoir,Savox brushless servo, custom battery mount for the 6s lipos which is mounted in the cabin, Custom windshield(The only Capra on Earth that has one),custom 1,000 lumen led headlight mod and at the moment custom bluetooth speakers which will salvaged from a JBL 3 clip. ;)
Awesome build. I owned a kit version Capra for about a month before I sold it. I managed to run a 10 t pinion with the help of my dremmel. Even though I live on the East cost of Australia with awesome rock formations to play on I got board of it in it's stock form very quickly. Because it is almost too capable on rocks I ran out of challenging lines and it's no fun as a trail truck. Always wondered what it would have been like with shorter axles and no portals.
I built my capra with ar60 axles on 1.9s. Been havin issues gettin my dig set right. Ive wanted to go with the 3 gear trans but couldnt find the skid for the conversion. Thanks Matt, youre a life saver lol.
Man Those MTRs look amazing on a Capra. I’ve been eyeing another set in 4.75 for G500 TRX4. Looks so scale. Thanks for sharing I asked about the 3 gear on Capra.
As soon as I got done building my Capra kit I picked up a Capra cage and skid and built it around the drivetrain from my SCX10 Deadbolt. I absolutely loved it. The ground clearance was lacking, so I picked up a set of SCX10.2 axles for it. I probably drive that as much as any other RC that I have. Certainly more than the stock Capra.
Can I say thank you for running the M/TRs that way. My thought process is that the weight sits on the inside of the tires and the extra lugs provide better traction!
The Capra was everything I hoped for, it did not disappoint. Upgrades are super shafty link riser servo mount and front aluminum knuckles, vitavon brass 3rd member. Running the same mtr’s on mine, great tire. Ssd dig mounts with a torq cl0508 hv micro servo. Went down to an 11t pinion with a Holmes 16t crawlmaster sport, hw 1080 and savox 2290, no external bec required.
Excellent video as usual! Really happy to see you work on the Capra, it’s been lacking a little love recently! I love my RTR, and I’ve made some mods to it so far, including custom aluminum body panels, internal spring shocks, Benedict Harry bead locks and upgraded the tires, 10t pinion and properly routed and zip tied cables because OCD is a thing! I’ve upgraded the steering servo to a 25KG Amazon generic, which I’m loving for performance and price! But I’ve disabled the DIG and removed its servo in the meantime as I try to figure out how I’m going to approach that! I really like your custom tilt meter; I’m in the process of customizing the interior and decided to tackle a custom dashboard electronics upgrade, and that tilt meter has given me massive inspiration, so thank you! I convinced myself early on that I would avoid making too many $$$ upgrades to my Capra and would only purchase what I could not make myself! Sadly, that line of thinking has gotten me interested in home machining and now I’m shopping for a lathe... My wife says thanks.
Matt - you've just put a Capra high on my list, when my Ship FINALLY comes in next year!!! Seriously, I like it so much better now. The stance is right, the CoG improved, and the Gear Ratio - the one thing I really didn't like about it - SORTED!!! Would standard SCX10 II Axles give me the same results? LOVE the idea of the good old 3 Gear Transmission in it! 👍👍 I know it must have been a "challenge" for sure. 😖 But worth it! I just hope all that will still be available next year... Thanks for inspiring!! 😁 Carmine ✈🚂🚙
before i saw this , i combined a raw builder kit with a capra cage for a low cost capra .i fabed some brackets a servo bracket. it came out great.yours is cool too
I just built a kit version,I think Josh was right about it going back to the ax10 days....just updated....so the width helps it spider around... I outfitted mine with a dji fpv system and run crawler courses in race mod....it's neat....
On mine, I have the tekin 35t pro motor, reef's rc triple 5 servo, no dig yet, wraith light kit, vanquish rims, CI foams, Pitbull tires, HR overdrive gears up front, stock shocks with the stiff springs up front, soft out back, upgrades still to come VP axles, and rear shafts, new tekin motor/esc combo, and Knight Customs front grill
Absolutely, but just purchased the UCFab skid for the scx10 3-gear transmission. Was thinking of using more narrow portals, perhaps swap out the ones in my SCX10iii when the straight axles come out for the SCX10iii. Great job, Matt!
First thing came to mind was-Noooooo not like the trx4 sport deleting the portal axels ,but, but it looks awesome and I wish the stance you made was the stock option out of the box! Great job and can’t wait to see some run vids. This was going to be my next build for next months SIP mental health day 😉
The terms you're searching for are Transverse and Longitudinal. ;) Think of a full-size car; an FWD has a sideways mounted, transverse, engine, and a traditional rear-wheel-drive has the engine going front to back, longitudinal.
I went the other way, to combat the COG I added some brass portal boxes up front and a brass servo mount. Running GMade AR04 wheels and Hyrax tires. Was having some clearance issues so no I'm playing with a wider stance and difference gearing
Added brass to my portals went with castle motor and esc , Holmes hobbies servo and reefs 99 for dig, and 90mm shocks ,,overdrive gears in front portal gears, I have a set of voodoo pins and ci foam and rims coming
I have two builds going from capra parts and a kit. One is the TGH-HH Sherpa chassis the other is the STH Optimus build. Neither are done but the TGH craws awesome...
Your capra looks way better now with the new axles👍 I just picked up some mt/r's for my capra and I was wondering what foams your using ?. What motor and esc are you using?
I have even less space in my Matzilla Capra cage that I could not use the same dig servo mount with the same skid plate, I made my own 3D printed mini and micro servo mount, I will use mini servo because of torque and standard spline, the only problem is that the only motor that fits is the HH Stubby, I liked the result at the end.
I don't have one, but a guy in a local club has one that is extensively modded and performs far better than most rigs I have seen out on the rocks. Actually I don't own any Axial rigs.
I really liked the looks of the Capra but didn't like the limited gearing choices or that it was kind of a pain to work on. So I started modifying it. Four months later there isn't much of the original Capra left except most of the cage. It now has a Vanquish VFD transmission and DIG, Vanquish Capra front axle, Supershafty front Capra axle on the rear all on a custom chassis. It was originally a project to stay busy during lockdown and it's actually been "done" several times until I get bored and start changing things. So it's a work in progress that may never get done. There are some pictures over on rccrawlers under VFD Capra if anyone is interested in seeing how dangerous (and expensive) boredom can be.
Ive built mine using a Mamba X combo with 1900kv and a 11t pinion so hopefully that gets me the slow crawl im looking for. I put in a 5ch receiver because rear steer will come later thanks to Logan from West Desert Wheeler who has me hooked on his 4ws Capra. I've always used a lot of Savox servos but this time I'm going to try the Eco Power WP120T that claims 400oz at 7.4v. I'm putting a set of the 4.7 inch Goodyear MT/R on either gray Method 101 or orange Method 101 haven't decided yet. Would love to see another running video with F9 axles. Thanks for all the videos and great ideas.
Having remembered this video, I have been inspired to build together an H10 axle'd Capra. Are there any suggestions or tips you would recommend aside from those mentioned in the video?
didnt buy a capra as my LHS does sell HH products but they had a Kyosho Fo-xx which peaked my interested looks like a Wraith 2.2. as always a great video see you on the next one
That's a really neat build, way to think outside the box. If someone still wanted to keep portal axles and still narrow the stance, do you think the 10iii axles would work? Thanks so much for the great video, you really got the cogs turning!
Dig it! Actually went the opposite way with mine other than getting it lowered down (which seems counterintuitive to the next part). Used jato rod ends to stretch the wheel base a bit (at like 13.5" now), swapped to Pro Line boggers 1.9s 5.4", and was able to fit a 9t pinion with a HH CM Pro 16t. See contradictory to lowering the height. But I like it, allows me to keep a faster pace out hiking. Not quite Altra pace, but faster then axles smacking rocks constantly, (I'm looking at you Enduro). Will probably swap to some Element white springs to bring the body down some more, she's a bit floppy still. Or go with the Super Shafty rear link riser. Trying to not add brass to this rig. May have to look into that skid, dig isn't a must for me so don't mind losing it. Anyways, great vid my friend, stay safe. 🍻
@@rc_crawler_zigzag84 I actually did add SSD brass wheel weights. The initial thought was to keep it light as possible, not against it, just preference. But since that post, I've swapped to BFG Krawler 1.9s and fit a HH Pro 10t 550. Pretty fun.
For the capra it looks good with narrow axles. The scx10, trx4 I think would look better with wider axles. I truly want a crawler but they don't seem worth it yet. Capra axles on the scx10 I think I might be interested.

I hear you, 100%. It's difficult this hobby sometimes. I remember the Yeti as well, spent many dollars on that platform, only to never really get it where I wanted it. This however, is done now. I don't see myself spending any more to do anything else. Pretty much exactly where I want it. It can be done cheaper, for example, plastic axles, plastic 3 gear, no dig, all brings costs down considerably.
Nice mods Matt I don't have a Capra I have a Bomber and it's crazy fast now Sidewinder4 esc and a Castle Creations 6900kv sensored motor with the vanquish links hot racing sway bar I have to switch to crawl mode it takes getting use to my fastest clock was 43mph in the open and motor was only 103° it's comfortable their says John at Holms Hobbies thank's for sharing 😎👍
Wow looks g great. I really like the smaller axles. They look way more appropriate! The tilt 'o meter IS AWSOME. Did you build that? How can I get one? lol
Installing an LCD screen on my dashboard... different definition of what i call « small from the inside » 😅 Any update about the top truck mint green on your left shoulder?
Really surprised that you didn’t go with the Element Stealth transmission with 12% OD over a Axial 3 gear. Seems like that would give you more options.
great channel. I just got a 4ws and was thinking about popping my axe r2 3300 in it but I'm thinking i need a new skid/tray and not sure what to do about the fact that it has a receiver/esc combo - not sure if the hobbywing will fit/run off of it.
Isn't that the cliff diver capra? Or am I mistaken? Side subject.... Any suggestions on where to go for tuning the suspension on a Monster Slash 4x4 VXL? I tried some skate park jumps and it doesn't land well or even flat. Yes I know some of it was me 😁
Have any running vids been posted yet? Been trying to trade out my 10.2 F9 portals for a set of straights and would love to see how it performs before doing the swap.
S602 has 200 oz torque??? Isn't it 50 in 6V?
Oops! Yes, I misspoke! Massively! Thanks for the correction. Not sure why I said that. It's been known to happen. Ha!
i have the RTR ... only thing i changed was moving to a more aggressive tire tread. Best advice I've ever heard "The best RC car is the one that puts the biggest smile on your face."

This man is known only for deleting portals...
Hahaha
That is true! 😂
I like it more narrow like this. Proportions look perfect now

It’s certainly been eclipsed by the 10iii but from my experience the Capra is in general my personal favorite axial product so far!
The upgrades make the vehicle definitely more appealing aesthetically.

I like that Capra set up, looks a lot better narrow👍🏼
Nice👍
I've just replaced my electrics in my RTR, put in a hobby wing axe 1200 and it's made a world of difference.
Took my Capra to Donner Ski Ranch today, what a beast. It is tall but you could have bought a Wraith. Still watched the hole vid. Thanks
My next build will be a Capra. Great video to show some of the possibilities.

You and me both!
Dunno...I would think ditching the portals would be a fair trade for bringing the weight closer to the ground. Love everything you did. :-)
Always thought the axcels were way to wide. Grest job!
I have one but still in the box as kit form since release. 😂 Though I have all to put together, I'm stuck with the 1/24 scale stuff.
Flat skid from fishes crawler parts. Dlux Hamberger transmission. 4ws and 3/4” longer wheelbase.

Very Wraith 1.9 ish now. Love the 1.9 Wraith. This should be killer!
Damn right! That’s what I felt, too wide indeed 👍 why I’m eyeing the Gatekeeper 😁

Installing an LCD screen on my dashboard... different definition of what i call « small from the inside » 😅 Any update about the top truck mint green on your left shoulder?
Not yet, but plenty more content on the way for that!
Really surprised that you didn’t go with the Element Stealth transmission with 12% OD over a Axial 3 gear. Seems like that would give you more options.
It's also substantially larger and while I didn't check, probably won't fit. Also, no dig option. If I want/need OD, I can still do it at the axle.
I wanna do the 3 gear trans because I hate my dig setup also I definitely need that grill
What holes do you have the upper links on the skid? Those look like the factory capra links correct?
FActory links, yep. Upper most holes on the skid for the uppers.
What links did you go with on this conversion? Struggling to figure mine out atm….
Love you videos man, keep up with the awesome content 👍🙂
Thanks! Will do!
Did you have to change the links to make those axles work? Do those axles have the same mounting positions as 10.2 axles?
I managed to make them work. If I could do it again, I’d cut some custom ones.
I need a Capra now!!
great channel. I just got a 4ws and was thinking about popping my axe r2 3300 in it but I'm thinking i need a new skid/tray and not sure what to do about the fact that it has a receiver/esc combo - not sure if the hobbywing will fit/run off of it.
You'll definitely need a different skid. Check with the one I link below to see if it will fit. Thanks for watching!
Looks like a 1.9 Wraith fastback the hard way!
Or, the better way! ;)
Any follow-up running video of this setup?
You've reminded me to take it out next time I go to my favorite spot!
I thought about implanting my scx-10.2 axles that are already modded and pro-line shocks in my Capra. It’s still stock.
I love my stock Capra. They are realistic just look at a werock comp rig.
I'm fully on board, just always thought the axles were too wide.
I think you should have used the Capra for the class 3 in the scale natanals. That's what I would go for anyway.
Not even close to competitive against the custom trucks out there!
nice looking machine :) please make raus more runing vids and please a comparison between the Capra and the Ripper
Isn't that the cliff diver capra? Or am I mistaken?
Side subject....
Any suggestions on where to go for tuning the suspension on a Monster Slash 4x4 VXL? I tried some skate park jumps and it doesn't land well or even flat. Yes I know some of it was me 😁
Mike J man, sorry I don’t know much about The Slash!
Have any running vids been posted yet? Been trying to trade out my 10.2 F9 portals for a set of straights and would love to see how it performs before doing the swap.
I haven't gotten around to it, but I will at some point soon!
@@scalebuildersguild awesome!!! I like my portals but really wanting to go back to straights.
I’m considering building a Capra with a Element transmission and the Axial straight axle kit. See any issues with this and the assembly?
You’ll need a new skid, like I used, but otherwise, should work!
Love it, but I can’t look at those tyres, it just bugs me that they don’t match
They do match, it's an on-purpose asymmetrical design.
Your front and back shock caps are different colours.. 😳😱
It looks good I like the paint job
Thanks 👍
Could a person run 80mm shocks and leave the portals and get a lower cog?
If I didn’t hoard spare parts I would offer to send you a set of shocks. 😏
More better-er-er is definitely a word! 👍🏼
I think so too!
Dude, if you want to go OG 3 gear transmission, you need to use the rc10 transmission 😆 , its what axial modeled their 3 gear after.
Yep, they sure did!
Im using the same set up with the vanquish dig and relocation bracket but I'm having problems with what servo horn and linkage to use
I made up my own, it'll need to be a custom length link.
Could you share what foams you are running in the Goodyear MT/R tires.
Lil Nova's from Crawler Innovations. Mediums.
Did you have to change the links with the new axle?
No, but your mileage may vary based on axle selection.
Is that servo you used for the dig a good replacement for sx107 on the scx10 iii
It won't fit, not a micro servo!
Matt did you print the display for the tilt meter?
Yes I did, a little custom job from yours truly!
