I had fun with it. Having to be online to play was dumb, but that was eventually patched out. I also wished there were bigger maps. I liked the concept of making multiple cities working together, growing the buildings with addons and whatnot was a good idea, and even the idea of having it (as an option not mandatory) online and having random people build a city to work off of. Just running out of space happened to quickly and easily.
Actually I found out someone did manage to mod the game to allow larger maps (Project Orion). But it's got various bugs due to how other parts of the game were made.
SC had many ambitious ideas, but the delivery fell short. While the long time SC4 modding community felt left out. The launch was a traumatic PR nightmare.
I remember the road tools being a pain, not the only game with this 'feature'. Circle tool wasn't well thought out, should have had a few controls. That EA didn't have a plan B for the server based always online mode, is telling, you can bet Maxis staff wanted to make it with single player. I bought Simcity (2013) when it came out, first city I ever made got deleted by EA to speed up updating the server.
Hey, this was one of my favorites games when it came out... even though the (deserved) criticism. It was the first citysim I've ever played. I picked this one due to the simplicity. Nowadays, I prefer cities skylines, especially because my new pc can actually play it this time hahaha
Thanks for the suggestion! I'll definitely consider doing a monthly play through of this game and attempting to build a mega structure. Stay tuned for future videos!
Damn I remember playing this. I actually enjoyed using the economy. I don't really know if the future dlc was that good but it was rlly fun to manage all of the quirks that came with it, and the megalithic towers were also very cool. I lowkey wish city skylines would do a similar dlc like that but it might ruin the theme I'm not sure. Also I remembered the maps being small but seeing this now again.. sheesh 😮
I dont think the game was or is that bad, i think the right word would be a disappointment. Compared to what was expected and what SimCity 4 was. The small plots were definetly a flaw, and the launch was a disaster. That being said i really like the game for what it is, disappointments set a side it has some features that are good (Upgradable buildings), the goofyness is rather fun and different, its very fluent to play, easy to get into, and it have a huge nostalgic impact on me as i played it a lot as a teenager (that may color my opinion just a bit). Great video btw! Good to see more people play SimCity, even if it is only for a brief visit 😄
I think the game is "fine" and you're right that without the hype surrounding it and then the launch issues that followed, it's a decent game, similar to something like Spore which was also overhyped and then didn't deliver, but still stands on its own as a decent title. I don't hate the game, but with CS2 on the horizon, I don't see myself rushing back to play more of it. :)
I think it was actually pretty good. But cities skylines was just much better at bigger scale at the time. Simcity felt like it had a bit shorter gameplay with way less tiles. The biggest reason I eventually gave cities skylines a try was space. But I really like the nuclear disasters and buildings upgrades feature. Now cities skylines 2 has building upgrades but i don't think they have added nuclear plant disasters.

It would be cool to see a monthly play through of this game. Maybe attempt building a mega structure play through.

Does it come in a circle?
I still play it from time to time
It is very similar to City Skyle 2 🤨🤨 like the Upgrade of Buildings with Parts
Buildings with modular upgrades are really cool!
This game actually started the whole "upgrade the buildings with parts". Cities Skylines 2 just followed it.
Ask the age old question, WILL IT CIRCLE?!
It still have more charms than Cities Skylines, which just looks bland and dull.
