All those countless hours building cities in the old Simcity 2000 game only to allow the giant alien monster thing come and obliterate said hours in mere moments. Ah childhood..RIP in pepperoni Maxis, and all hail our new Skylines overlords.
I started on SC 3000, then got 4 when it came out. I can't even say how much time I spent on it and I loved it. I lost interest for a while, then discovered the modding community, started downloading mods and addons and it instantly renewed my love of the game. I was kind of sceptical when I saw the gameplay demos of the new SimCity. I wasn't sure I liked how they handled zoning and stuff and the gameplay seemed very restricted. I didn't get a chance to try it out though because around the time it came out I switched to using Linux. I can't even remember how, but I stumbled across Cities Skylines and when I got Steam I was really excited to see it would run on my Linux machine. It seems it all worked out for the best.

The difference between Dimcity and Cities Skylines is, that in Simcity natural distasters are some sadistic feature to tear down your whole city. In CS it's for simulating realistic desaster management
Yeah, have it start with a well-groomed C: S Mayor walking down a street in a nice suit and come across a poor and homeless SimCity Mayor because he just cant compete.
"We have tornadoes, and earthquakes..." "None of these things are good" *one year later, in 2016* "Hey guys, you can buy a DLC which adds tornadoes and earthquakes to Cities Skylines!"
But disasters in Skylines are better because you can respond to them in a realistic way. You can build resources that can predict them and help your citizens evacuate. They aren't just random disasters for the sake of having them. Not to mention now the game has so much and they continue to support the modders and community.

This is four years old and I watched it, when it was released and I come back at it everytime. This never gets old. playeronthebeat sim city 2013 is an embarrassment to the sim city franchise SC4 and SC3K perfectly executed what a city building game should be but EA had to go and ruin it
playeronthebeat cities skylines with all the DLCs has gotten very expensive though ☹️ really wanted to buy it but even with the end of the year huge discounts, it’s still ~90€. Base game is ~7€ with the heavy discounts but is it worth getting just the base game?

Ngl, after a few years of playing CS I just said "oh to hell with this" and went back SC4 with NAM. I got tired of babysitting traffic when I wanted to build massive cities. Now I don't have to deal with everyone and their grandmother using one single lane on a 6 lane road, I don't have to deal with pedestrians spawning freaking pocket cars, rail systems for freight are actually worth building, etc etc.
HuntingMachine the problem is that the only thing that simcity needs is making the 3000 version work on 64 bit comps and add faster times this was the perfect game intuitive fun and cities skyline is just an opposite they tried to make eu4 out of a simulator
I know the feel bro. But I have to say that 6,000 subs isn't really unimpressive compared to my 50 and I've been making videos since 2008. Alright, they weren't very good back in the day though. Anyways, been watching some more of your videos, and am really stunned how good your videos match with my favorite games (KSP, Civ 5, Cities: Skylines) and am really looking forward for more!
The only problem is that Cities: Skylines traffic AI is horrendous and requires mods to fix. Having ambulances and firetrucks in C:S doesn't mean much when regular traffic won't pull to the side of the road to let them through.
That much is true. I also dislike that apparently Colossal Order haven't looked up most Metro systems to find out that many actually do go above ground.
IIRC, SimCity doesn't simulate traffic at all, same to actual people. So while, yeah, simulating that is a point that can break... I think it's better than not simulating at all. In the former, one can at least fix it via mods :D
cyone01 It doesn't need to simulate, one of the few points where SimCity does it better: every vehicle is an entity beloging to a sim, can't much better than that
That is called simulating ;) I don't know exactly how SimCity works. But it fudges a lot of numbers. For example, C:S does simulate every "Cim", that's why population numbers in C:S are so much lower than in SimCity... Where not every member of the population is actually simulated.
@@thatpersonsmusic Not necessarily. While Cities: Skylines is a great game, it's really not the same kind of citybuilder. SimCity 4 and earlier were all more technical games while Cities: Skylines is mainly focused on design, with traffic being the only truly technical element. In SimCity 4, you had to work to get skyscrapers. In Cities: Skylines, getting skyscrapers is as easy as painting a district, giving it the IT specialization and zoning offices inside it. That being said, I do believe that something like Cities: Skylines but with SimCity 4's features would be what SimCity 2013 should have been.
Yeah you don’t make a lot of policy decisions in C:S that influence your city. I kind of miss those ugly brown slum areas of SC2000 that resulted from low education and high crime. In C:S, everything is uniform, unless you mod, but even then you’re placing slums manually, which doesn’t make any sense.
I used to have that game on 4 DVDs, now I have it on steam, old SIM city is great, new is bad and should be replaced by Cities Skylines whenever possible
2020 version: "My city has industry. Every kind you can imagine." "So do we with the Industries DLC." "And awesome universities" "University DLC" "We have giant tornadoes, earthquakes..." "Disasters DLC"
Love this video. Hits comparison right on the money and the reactions were great. Although I would've touched more on the mod capability, stretching on the fact that Cities Skylines give the people an opportunity to customize. Like when SimCity touched on having a Mayor Mansion, Cities Skylines says "wow, you do have a good point. (checks his phone, makes a few taps). I have one too now."
@OOM - 6 I grew up with SimCity when the games were sold in CD's and complete. That is my point, CS is a fantastic game even without the DLC's, but it's just horrible how the companies force you to spend more bucks just to have a complete experience.
Even worse. People get annoyed and instead of buying the game they just download a pirate copy. It's just sad how some developers do that and ruin the game for some people (EA, Paradox, Activision)
The service building stuff was really spot on. I find this very annoying because I just played the game recently (with Cities of Tomorrow expansion). That moment when you have no otger power plants but fusion reactors (needs ControlNet) and you relocated the academy (by demolishing), creating a massive (Regional) power failure because the power plant needs both ControlNet and a lot of power to jumpstart the whole power plant. I highly doubt if anyone even understand this, but I know there people out there that knows...
+Fiery Jabiy Nope I understood, though I never bothered with the fusion reactor because power was shared based on the number of cities in the region instead of cities it could actually reach. Not to mention it was insanely expensive, one can only hope that Maxis will learn from Skylines but... that might be asking too much I mean it is owned by EA.
My heart broke into tears and laughter SIM-ultaneously with "in Memorium." let us take a moment of silence to remember our favorite Maxis Games. Oh Spore... you could have been more.
I miss a lot of Sim City stuff like decent agriculture and unique industry like hi-tech and rewards like farmer's markets and space shuttles. That said, it's from Sim City 4, kind of wish they could incorporate that sort of stuff into City Skylines
I kinda liked the art style of Sim City a lot more. I dont really like hyper realism, personally, so I liked the more cell-shaded and bright colors of the Sims City of Tomorrow thing. But, undeniably, aside from some mostly flavour things that are just opinion, Skylines is the superior game by a landslide.
Golkarian - Paradox became King of DLCs (but at least they bring in some decent content and the non buyers get to enjoy some of the features. I bet there will be a rural town DLC with farming and such. And probably a high tech utopia as well.
@@neamhdhlisteanach6720 true. But the mechanics of cities skylines means to upgrade roads from small to large it requires more tiles. In the real world you can add lanes to roads by shrinking other parts of the road and the paths without having to relocate the building.
No, but relocating services is. Why could your police or hospital staff not just grab their stuff and move into another building? Sure, it will cost you, but still not as expensive as starting a new hospital/police station from the ground up.
bigglessy you just had to make a road go cross the highway and it would ask you do you wanna have off and on ramps? an you would say, yes, or no... good times... ;)

I was kind of sceptical when I saw the gameplay demos of the new SimCity. I wasn't sure I liked how they handled zoning and stuff and the gameplay seemed very restricted.
In the former, one can at least fix it via mods :D
cyone01 It doesn't need to simulate, one of the few points where SimCity does it better: every vehicle is an entity beloging to a sim, can't much better than that
That is called simulating ;)
I don't know exactly how SimCity works. But it fudges a lot of numbers. For example, C:S does simulate every "Cim", that's why population numbers in C:S are so much lower than in SimCity... Where not every member of the population is actually simulated.

City Skylines is what Sim City 2013 should have been
@@thatpersonsmusic
Not necessarily.

Also, great video!
+Fiery Jabiy Nope I understood, though I never bothered with the fusion reactor because power was shared based on the number of cities in the region instead of cities it could actually reach.
And probably a high tech utopia as well.

bigglessy you just had to make a road go cross the highway and it would ask you do you wanna have off and on ramps? an you would say, yes, or no...
good times... ;)
shitposting is my city in Skylines you can use the ramps at your discression. Even as quick-run roads in their own right.
"Do you have a super hero? We do. He's called Maxis Man."
"In memorium?"
Well shit.
Laughing and crying is close together on that one.
Still hilarious, even six years later.
nah, it's even funnier.
