The demo disco I remember fondly is that one that had Parappa The Rapper, Jet Motto 2, Armored Core, Tomb Raider 2. Colony Wars and Fighting Force were also on there but hidden. I used to have a subscription to The Official PlayStation Magazine and I used to look forward to getting those demos every month.

That demo disc is probably more responsible for people knowing the first song in Parappa the Rapper than actual copies of that game.

I swear to god I used to spend more time on the free magazine demo discs than half of the games I had! Classic example is Virtual On for the Saturn! I spent so much time playing the demo back in the day but a few months ago I finally bought my own copy of the full game......... I haven't played it yet .__.
Another is Tekken 3. Played the hell out of it to the point where when I finally got the chance to play it in the arcade for the first time ever, I flew through it on a single credit.
Clearly I had no life back then.... Oh, sorry correction - I have no life.

I *loved* the demo disc era-- especially from 1996 on. PlayStation Underground (eventually Official PlayStation Magazine) demo discs were often packed with content, much like Joe showed off with the Jampack disc. Cheats, memory card downloads, and behind-the-scenes features complemented the playable demos well.
Demo discs really took off during Gen6, though. All of the consoles had them, and three of the four had steady releases of demo discs thanks to Official Magazines. I still have quite a few of the Official PlayStation Magazine demo discs for the PS2, and the DVD format allowed for even more stuff to be packed in. In addition, demos for individual games were much more common; God of War, Shadow of the Colossus, Rogue Galaxy, Burnout Revenge, Total Overdose, and a few others remain in my possession.
Demo discs are relics of a long-since-passed age. Internet connectivity has made demo discs all but pointless, which is unfortunate since directly downloading demos means that the creation of extra features that used to come on demo discs is no longer necessary. Heck, even demos themselves are becoming more uncommon.
Finally-- and I know it's been mentioned in the comments, but the import demo that Joe played here wound up being Irritating Stick here in the US. I bought that game back in 1999 and still own & play it today. No need to pay for an import on this one; it's cheap to own and the quirkiness will be off-putting to many. Guilty pleasure game for me.
Congrats on the expansion to weekly episodes. I understand that it requires more work, but it's really nice to know that I can look forward to seeing new Game Sack episodes more often.

kniferaffe I don't know if I'd call it "amazing", but it's definitely better than people think... it's such a twisted mix of kiddie fare and totally inappropriate jokes... I still laugh at the "baton" death march... if you know history, you'll know how inappropriately wonderful that joke is.

This was a great idea for an episode guys!
My earliest experience with demo discs were with 3.5" floppies and CDs for DOS. You could call a lot of publishers up and ask for a free demo disk, and they'd send them to you. Didn't even have to pay shipping! And yes, Joe. You DO need to talk about those Dreamcast games some more. The world will be a better place for it. :)

This might be my favorite episode of Game Sack yet. Hardly anyone talks about demo discs, but man, they were a huge part of my childhood. It was like, get a full-price game and maybe hate it and not get another one for months and months, or get a demo disc every couple of weeks and have a huge variety of games to try out. Plus it was really fun seeing how much you could push out of a demo!

As a kid, I played Tomba over and over and over on my demo disc, but I never found a copy of the game until about a year ago. Its funny how as kids we got such enjoyment out of game demos since we only got new games to play every once in a great while. Now I have hundreds of games and am well on my way to owning every game I would ever want to play.

The Playstation One's demo disk one was pretty cool, the one with a giant T-Rex and a Manta. Rey. You could only move the camera and change the Rex expression but it gave a good first impression on the system, with ambiance music and light effects. Sony should do a PS4 remake for time sake.
Christmas Night is an AMAZING demo disk ! Filled with exlusive characters, mini games and secret contents.
Also I had a saturn demo disc with more than 100 games, don't remember from which magazine it came.

Olivier Drevet I remember that disc. It was called Demo1 and was packaged with every new PS1. I remember it had an intro movie, I felt like it was designed to introduce the console library to the new Playstation customer. It had Abe's Oddysee in it, as well as a dark trance-ey menu.
I also remember, sometime later, getting a demo disc from a friend, who had gotten it from a magazine…it had the first E3 trailer for Silent Hill on it (the first one!!!)

I love their stony delivery and cold impersonal faces when they talk at the camera, which makes sense since in their minds as they're talking to an inanimate camera... but then they realise they're also technically talking to each other... so, they look toward at each, not, always at each other, but toward... sometimes with a hint of warmth in their eyes... then back at the camera.
    It's beautiful.

Here's a few I think are worth noting:
GamePro Action Disc 1 - I've used this disc for years to play PS1 imports on my PS2. Works like a charm. There's no other reason to really have it, but that's enough for me.
Titan AE - It's a demo disc for a cancelled game. That's pretty interesting.
Official PlayStation Magazine 13 - Play Metal Gear Solid in Japanese with English subtitles. The English dub was incredible, no doubt, but this is still pretty cool.
I still go through my OPSM demo discs every now and then and find games I've long forgotten about and then purchase them years after the fact - most recent example being playing OPSM 10 and then remembering that I needed to pick up Granstream Saga.

I fondly remember begging my mum to get me a few UK Playstation magazines just so I could play the demo discs that they came with. The demo discs we had over here would also occasionally contain small games made by independent developers on the Net Yaroze PS1, most of them were clearly test software, but some of the games made on it were actually a lot of fun despite how simple some of them were.

I remember that our PlayStation came with "Demo1" disc. It had bunch demos, like Bust-a-Groove, Crash Bandicoot 3. Gran Turismo, Medievil, Kula World, Spyro, Tekken 3, Tombi and Tomb Raider 3. It also had trailers of Spice World and one kickass Metal Gear Solid trailer, that ended up with detonating C4 of almost whole game area.
Then there was demo discs, that came with PlayStation magazine. I always was kinda scared of them, because they had trippy looking menus. I get chills for even remembering then.

@@tetrisdave It takes a while to get used to the controls but its a much better game when you have a better understanding of how to play. on one stage you run around on top of spinning helicopter blades killing enemies. That's true Contra game play.

I need to share a wonderful/horrible story about the Lunar demo disc mentioned here. This demo is the reason a good friend of mine never beat, and will never again play lunar. As mentioned, you can save the demo and continue the normal game, so that's what all my friends did. Well, one of them wanted to make more space for items on Alex, and decided to move the flute to the flying cat for safe keeping. (this flute is unmovable on the actual game, NOT SO on the DEMO) moved right on over, and continued through the whole game. Once he reached the end, about the same time as the rest of us, the game wouldn't do anything once he got to lunar, it would just stay there locked up. After speaking with the rest of us, and finding out what is supposed to happen, we looked into his game, and found the issue, the flute is STILL on the flying cat/dragon, and per the game mechanics, is still UNMOVABLE. My friend still has this save, right before lunar, with a flute on a cat, and NO WAY to BEAT THE GAME ... we still pick on him for this 15 yrs later.

I remember spending what seemed like hours standing at Sears and Toys R Us game kiosks playing every demo that I could (that was not a video). I remember them moving through the systems from the 16 to 32 bit eras... with the aging snes holding on with Stunt Race FX and the Genesis showing Comix Zone... and the PS1 and Sat with Need for Speed and Fighters Megamix... I also remember the CDI on display... oh god.... I am becoming a random memory spouting old man. HOWEVER, I did buy the game Blast Chamber recently after having played it fifteen years ago on a PS1 demo disk...

Oh, the Official Dreamcast Magazine discs. My uncle had the Dreamcast and he'd get the magazine every week, and my cousin and I would play the hell out of the Skies of Arcadia demo once we discovered it. We beat it so many times that I lost count eventually. I'm surprised we didn't scratch the disc.

The first thing i think about when i think demo disc is the MGS2 demo that came with Zone of the Enders for PS2. I spent allot more time on that demo than what i did with Z.o.E.
My favorite demo experience however wasn't the original Z.O.E. MGS2 demo, but 6 months later. MGS2 had already released in America, but was still 6 months away in Europe. A 2nd demo came out, but this time in a PS2 magazine.
First thing i noticed was that it was now in English rather than Japanese. However what really blew my mind is that the demo no longer ended after you defeated Olga. You could actually get all the way to the end of the engine room in this demo before it ended.
This meant i had an extended demo to help make the wait for the full game a little bit more bearable.

I miss Demo discs. I played the demo of "Tony Hawk's Pro Skater" non-stop for months. It featured the Chicago contest level and I would take the disc out after the level loaded, so the music and timer would stop (you can only listen to "Jared Was A Race Car Driver" by Primus so many times before you lose your sanity) and I could play for hours. I even figured out you could use a Gameshark to replace Bob Burnquest with a version of Kareem Campbell that didn't appear in the final game.
Yes, I had way too much time on my hands.

The official Sega Saturn magazine gave away the entire first disc of Panzer Dragoon Saga on the front of their May 1998 magazine. Without a doubt that was the most impressive demo I've ever played. By the time the game was released I was already hooked on the strange but enthralling story. I also got the Christmas Nights disc from Toys 'R' Us, but sadly my disc got damaged and stopped working.
This video was interesting, because almost all the demo disks I had access to were magazine cover discs. I wasn't aware of the pre-order discs you have collected.
This was an interesting idea for a video. Nice job. :)
