From my understanding there was a demo for the Sega CD that was the actual full game. They just put in some code that made it stop at the first level but they forgot to remove the level select code.
The Xbox Exhibition vol 2 demo disk included Capcom vs Snk 2 just without the ability to save

How about crash bash for ps1? The entire game was unlockable on Spyro 3. The demo had a code that unlocked the beta version which had everything unlocked. But Homer and Bart Simpson were placeholder images for a boss fight.

I used to play the demo of Future Cop: LAPD over and over again with my friend. Later in life we both bought the full game and found out the demo really was the only part of the game worth playing.

My first true introduction to a demo disk at home was the legend of Zelda collectors disc for GameCube. They were selling it bundled to the GameCube. I already owned ocarina of time and majoras mask on n64 but now I owned them on GameCube with a much nicer controller and it was in 480p instead of 240p my 8 year old mind was blown. But it also had a 20 minute playable demo of wind waker and 3 separate save states to start from. I played that demo so much just to see if I could do more and see more each time

I still remember when a friend of mine came to my house and said check this game on this disk. I said demos let you play for like 10 minutes so what is the deal? But he insisted and I checked it. It was Grand Theft Auto for the PS1. Seriously I played so much of that demo disk, more than I played some full games.

I have never played a final fantasy title, but I did play the demo for FF7 for HOURS.
The demo did such a great job of showcasing the game and the series as a a whole, that I knew I wouldn't be into it.

I played the Monsters, Inc.: Scream Team demo over and over as a kid. Sadly, none of the games I'm interested in ever seem to release demos now.
Demos are one of my favorite things ever. Booting up my 360, then my PS4, going onto the store and downloading demos. That's great.

One of my favourite games for PS1 was the Spyro 3 demo. I played that thing for probably hundreds of hours. Then years later in the PS2 days I got the full game for cheap and played it on the PS2. But somehow I almost got more fun out of the demo than the full game. And I've bought it yet again for the switch now, the remakes. Best 3D platformer ever made, good old spyro 3

This is a fantastic piece, and really hits me “in the feels” as someone who appreciated the demo disc era when it happened and who collects demos today.
The fact that these were tangible items that we got in the mail (or in stores, or in magazines) and could pop into our consoles like games is important to understand. Getting one in the mail was always a neat bonus and, yeah- I played every game on every one I got.
Downloads aren’t tangible. Picking games a la carte isn’t the same as the smorgasbord of games we got on these discs, which basically convinced us to step out of our comfort zones and try what was there.
I could ramble on and on about this topic, but instead I’ll just thank you for picking it to cover.

I'm more of a digital guy myself, but I highly agree that there is something MISSING when you get to choose the demos yourself, there's just no surprise factor that way...
I never grew up with "demo disks" but there was a time my Dad gave me a flash drive with a bunch of DOS games on them back in the mid 2000's. It was sureal to open up each and every folder and see what would happen, some games were awesome, some weren't, some games wouldn't work, and others were desguised horror games that stick in my mind to this day...
(Also whenever a game comes with a demo of a game you never heard of, that's always neat)
Point being, you can't replicate this with "download whatever demos you want." The entire reason demos are so cool is cause they are free! If I want to buy a game...I'll buy it and skip the demo!
TL;DR Demos used to feel like fun little distractions rather than ads to get you to buy a game. (Ala demos tend to be a lot shorter nowadays...)

I remember that - a young me was devastated when I found that out. They did send me a copy of Sly 2 to make up for it. (Actually, they had a list of titles to choose from as a form of apology but Sly 2 was the best of that bunch from what I remember.)

Yeah, I remember this. My friend gave it to me from his subscription and it erased my progress on Kingdom Hearts, Devil May Cry and Tekken Tag Tournament- all I had painstakingly burned hoooouuurrrs of gameplay to hit certain levels/unlocked modes or characters.
I told my friend about it, he just slyly said "Oh yeah I know, that happened to me"
Needless to say, I stopped being his friend. I also burned the disc.

When I was young, instead of demo discs, it was just DVDs with game trailers on. My first exposure to Banjo-Kazooie was a trailer for Nuts & Bolts on one of those discs.

Scott thank you for this video! I had the Jampack PS1 disc you showed so much of in this video (with Legend of Dragoon). I had completely forgotten where I played those demos. When I saw that jewel case I immediately paused the video and bought that specific disc. I had so much fun as a kid playing those demos over, and over again. It's where I was introduced to JRPGs with LoD. Again thanks for the info.

I had so many Demo Disc's as a kid. Thank you Playstation magazine. A new Demo every month. It was heaven.
The best Demo I ever played was Warthunder. The Demo included online multiplayer on one of the games best map set to Capture the flag game mode. And the demo supported split screen online multiplayer. My brother and I put at least a hundred hours into that demo. There where communities for just the demo version! IT was insane how good and how much content was in it.

When I was younger I didn’t own a lot of games on my Xbox 360 so I just went through and downloaded like every demo and played them all, nowadays most games don’t have demos and the ones that do more often than not end up being games I don’t really care about so I don’t get that pure joy I would feel when playing a demo and imagining how cool the full game must be, because now I can just look it up or buy the game easier because I can make money now. Some things I wish would never change but I guess time has to go on and things you got joy out of when you were young just don’t give you joy anymore and you just have to accept it and find something new...

I had so many Playstation demo discs! OPM, Official Playstation Magazine, was my main source! *SO* many of the others you shared are scarily familiar too. Like I remember those exact menus and demo selections. These images have been buried in my brain for over 15 years and they're practically part of my DNA.
I was one of the people who kept replaying a demo over and over again, it had Ratchet and Clank and Gran Turismo and I kept playing those over and over again.

Yup, I could’ve rented the games I played on demo discs, I did for some of them but other times I’d just constantly play the Chibi Robo or Destroy All Humans 2 demos

I remember playing the Mario kart double dash bonus disc on repeat, literally played the sonic heroes demo on that more then Mario kart

I remember that promotion they did it in the UK too, I remember it fondly it was pretty cool as a kid to get video game demos just going out to eat

Demo disc where my childhood
Still remember when my mom got me the psp. Couldn’t afford a game at the time but the demo disc it came with was awesome.
Same story with the GameCube. But that’s how I discovered Splinter Cell. What a game!

Demo discs are neat. I buy them whenever I see them second hand.
Also one of the ones I own has a Crash Bash demo that lets you access the full game using a cheat code that the developers accidentally left in. Whoops.
