  • Here we go again with a review of an absolutely classic Tamron lens that could be of considerable interest to owners of full-frame cameras - although its focal length would make it a little awkward on an APS-C camera. Can this very inexpensive, fast standard zoom lens possibly be any good? Let's find out...

I bought this lens a month ago, used, for U$ 400 and its a very very very nice upgrade to my kit lens. You are right about the range @ 28mm, but I will say: theres no cheaper lens that brings that quality for its price, and its 2.8. I spent weeks viewing reviews and checking videos, and the only viable option is 17-50mm 2.8, from tamron, but its for crop sensor only. Since I want to upgrade my t3i for a 6D or 5dm3, or something that will come, thats the best I could afford, with decent quality. That being said, whenever I can, I shoot with F4, for sharper images. The only two things that bother me are: the zoom ring, that is not smooth at all, and the motor focus that is noisy and sounds its going to break. Overall, Im so happy that I dont need to use the crappy lens kit and the image quality is a huge leap. If someone can find something better for U$ 400-500 dollars, well, tell me and I will be very pissed.

Love this lens, I use it almost everyday with my Sony a900 or a850, it's fast and focuses fast because the Sony uses a screwdriver mechanism and I find it very sharp even wide open. I want to mention that when this lens is used with a Sony Alpha body you get IBIS as a bonus making it an even better lens. Chris, I watch all your videos because of the knowledge gained from your good work makes buying decisions easier, thanks!

I bought one at the end of 2019 for about 180 on eBay. Wanted a cheap f2.8 zoom lense. I have used it on the m50 mk1 and eos rp. I have had some weird focus issues on the m50. Could of been an adaptor issue or because I kept switching between lenses maybe, not sure. That was the only time I had focus issues. It seems to be kind of blurry and struggles with close up shots or far away shots. Seems to perform best at mid range shots. I haven't seemed to have any issues on the rp. It's not as sharp or detailed as my 50mm f1.8 nifty fifty though. Did a bunch of comparison photos one day after doing a photo shoot for a friend. This is a great lens for personal fun. I've enjoyed it for the price. Usually my go to. I have noticed with my lense that the center isn't always great have to move up to about f4 at 28mm for sharpest center and around f5.6 for 70mm for best quality in the center of photo/focused area. F2.8 is okay for low light but If light is good i usually shot f4 for better quality.

In that zoom range, I personally recommend the 24-70mm Tamron f/2.8. It has stabilisation, is very quiet, has quick focus, and is nice and sharp (better than the canon version of the 24-105mm f/4). It's also weather sealed, which the lens in review is not. One more thing to note is that the t-stop is listed as 2.8 (the same as the f-stop). That's quite special. All in all it's a satisfying, and fun lens.
Another one I hear great things about is the Sigma 24-105mm f/4.0. It's supposedly even sharper than the Tamron 24-70mm, but you lose half the light as well. I haven't tried that one myself.
Both of these are significantly more expensive options, though. But, it's also not a novel focal range. One could argue that the all-around usefulness of 24-70mm is worth investing some extra dosh into.

These reviews are just extremely informative! I have a Canon 28-105 f3.5-4.5 USM II for my APS-C which is a good all-around travel focal range in my opinion. However I rarely go over 70, and for that I have a tele also... Which means that a 28-70 or something like a 24-70 or 28-75 is a good one-lens setup for me. That f2.8 is really tempting, and I really miss a so detailed review from you about said Canon 28-105, for comparison purposes. I took some of my best shots with that so far (unfortunately I don't have much more to compare it to (yet)).

I bought a used copy of Tamron's 17-50mm f/2.8 at a bargain on MPB due to the tiny flecks of fungus inside the lens and have been nothing but thrilled with its image quality ever since. If the 28-75mm is anything close, those two lenses would make for a great coverage of focal range in just two lightweight lenses, with fast enough apertures to take you into the early evening or indoors. Unless you need faster glass, you really can't go wrong trading in your kit for these.

  • @BrianKern

Very nice review. Had I seen it a few weeks ago I probably would have been very excited that I just picked up an excellent condition copy of the non-bim version of this in Nikon mount for $90. I was expecting to be underwhelmed when I originally acquired it but was pleasantly surprised after shooting with it for a bit. It's an astonishingly good lens for that price. Focus is actually pretty zippy, it's sharp where I need it when I need it, has good contrast and colors, decent bokeh and focuses quite close. It's not quite as good as the new Tamron 28-75 but I paid 1/8 the price and it definitely isn't 1/8 the lens.

  • @Will-wq3ef
    @Will-wq3ef 6 лет назад +2

Thanks for this review. The Tamron 17-50mm was always my favourite general purpose lens on APSC. I am making the move to full frame but on a budget, so it's good to see its 28-75mm sister lens is also quite good. I expect the 24-70 VR is a little better, but second hand copies cost 3x the amount. I can put that money towards a nice prime. I'm thinking of either the Nikon or Tamron 35/1.8.

This lens does produce very sharp images close up at 2.8. I was at a function and the focus continually failed especially at 50 mm and above 4.0. The focus kept diddling between 4.0 and 7.1 without any focus and at 8.0 it suddenly stops especially in a low light situation. I was using a Canon 6D and 5DM3. I could not use a flash due to the nature of the function.

Hi there! I just wanted to say that you have the best lens reviews through youtube, so keep on doing it! Simple, not confusing and not to mention that you've not only testing the most expensive lenses!
But I've got one question: I am on a really low budget with a 600D and I want to get a fairly good and most importantly cheap super-wide lens, Which one do you suggest? I'm not afraid of manually focusing, so really old but good resolution lenses will do the job for me.So as I said no need to be canon manufactured as long as it's sharp (I dont care about distorsions ad vignetting as they can be corrected in post-processing. Thank you in advance!

Thank you for your answers! By the way what's your opinion about canon's 10-18mm IS STM? It's much cheaper and wider than Tamron or Sigma 17-50. I know it lets in much smaller amount of light, but it has IS. I checked your review of it, and that lens seems to be quite nice for the price. Opinions?

Spot on Review!! wish i had seen this before I purchased this lens. I picked this over the Sigma 17-50mm because I wanted a lens that is Full frame when i move up from my D7100....Big mistake!! Blurry faces galore!! no matter what focus techniques you use. Did comparison shots against my Sigma 70-200mm...not even close, Sigma was world's sharper! ratio wise i toss out 3 out of every 4 shots from this lens....if you have poor quality of light, don't use this lens....only performs well in great light.

Tarequl Hasan (I can't reply to your post directly, so I'll try this)
SLR cameras can take third party lenses. Or rather, third party companies create lenses that will fit to big name brands such as Nikon or Canon. In this review, two Canon cameras are used to test the lens. So, yes, Canon can take a Tamron lens. *Just make sure you get the Canon version of that lens.*
    Hope that helps! :-)

Christopher: Thank you for all your reviews. You are the one that providing serious test review. Simple and efficient. I can tell you that I always follow your opinion before buying.... I have a 5D Mark IV moving back to Canon after being Panasonic and Sony... So I need to rebuild some few lenses... I already have a 25-105 F4L IS USM - A 70-200 f2.8 G2 from Tamron a fantastic lens, and a converter x2 from Sigma that works quite good on the TAMRON. I project to buy or a 100-400 from Sigma or Tamron or Canon.... It would be nice if you make a comparison review about these popular lenses..... Thank You. Daniel

Hi Chris! I recently sold my Canon EF 24-105mm F/4L IS USM lens because I want a lens that I can use for night photography. So far I have three alternatives, the first one is the old Canon EF 28-70mm F/2.8L USM. It's quite hard to find a used one here in Sweden but I was able to find plenty on ebay in Japan, total cost would be around 800$. Then we have the old Canon EF 24-70mm F/2.8L USM. Much easier to find where I live but it's still not that cheap, I can get a used one between 600-700$. And finally we have the Tamron 28-75mm F/2.8. I'm really chocked that I can get a new one and still pay less than I would for a used Canon 28-70 or 24-70, a little under 500$. Just to let you know, I don't need high build quality, silent autofocus or a first party lens. I've owned the Tamron 17-50 before so I'm familiar with Tamron. But in terms of overall image quality between the Canon 24-70mm F/2.8L USM Mark i and the Tamron 28-75mm F/2.8, which one would you say is the better performer? I can't ask you about the 28-70 since you haven't review it :-)
    Sincerely
    Dave

One of the first lenses I bought.. got it for 120$ ... I was tempted lately to upgrade to 24-70 g2 but couldn't justify paying around 800$ for a used one ... due to MTF and reviews I can see the main advantage I would got is the Image Stabilization...luckily I found a Nikon Z7 for 950$ so now I have IBIS to solve that 😀 ...

Dear, congratulations for the review and for the channel. I am with a doubt and I need your opinion. I have bought a used Tamron 28-75 Di lens but offered as 100% functional in a well known American online store (MPB). When I try to focus in the automatic mode used on a Nikon D7000 it works perfectly, but when focusing using the Liveview mode (camera screen) it does not focus (does not work). I want to know if it is normal, if it is a matter of a configuration error or if it could be that the lens is damaged? Thanks very much,

Another great review, made me look for one used on Amazon and for $190 it found it's way in my camera bag - so impressed with the results when compared to the original 24-105mm Canon kit lens that came with the 5Dmk iii. It does suffer aesthetically so to boost it up I added a lens hood, Lol. For real world use I was very happy with the results throughout the zoom range at f/2.8 - I'm sure I'm not as discerning as you but for someone starting out where the margins are low this is a great lens.

Hi Chris, I love your videos. You have the best reviews.
I have a Nikon D5300 APSC sensor (1.5x), I have the Sigma 18-35 F1.8 but I need a telephoto, would you recommend this lens? Considering I already have a wide angle... You said in the video that is not a good option because of the weird focal length that gives you on an APSC, but I think it has an excellent sharpness, and if you use it just for telephoto it would work great. What do you think?
Thanks again, you are the best. God bless.

I picked up this lens used a few weeks ago for $200USD. For a walk around lens it is great! Although I do wish it went to 24mm. Compared to the newest Canon 24-70 mk2 (which I rented a couple years ago), the Canon is sharp and contrasty corner to corner, but at 3.5 times the price (new), it better be. The Tamron is now part of my travel kit.

    Hi Christopher and friends:
This lens Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 is perfect on Nikon DSLR but I cannot use it on Nikon Z , even I have FTZ adapter but auto focus does not work but manual.
The same Tamron 10-24mm 1: 3.5-4.5 cannot use on Nikon Z7II but manual.
Please tell those lenses can upgrade firmware or not or those lenses only use goon on Nikon DSLR only.
    Thank You.

From what I’ve read on Reddit and personally experienced. The older version of Tamron f2.8 28-75 mm or this version on the RF canon cameras using an ef-rf adapter it does have focus shift or back focus and it’s very noticeable wide open at f2.8.

Hi Christopher, I received my copy of this lens 2 days ago, i slapped it onto my new Sony A7R3 amd started shooting in hand-held mode. For some reason my images are not coming out to be sharp. The lens was little hard to mount. It had to apply a lot of force to hear that click sound of the lens snapping into position. I wonder if that's a bad sign?
Then I tried shooting in AF-S and AF-C mode. The S mode seems to give badly focused images even though thr camera locked focus correctly. If I zoom in all the way on a person's face, it isn't as sharp as I was expecting. Some shots very easily blurred. Shutter speed was 1/25 to 1/80, tried to see if it is the effect of hand shake, but even after keeping syper steady amd high shutterspeed, i am not getting the pixel level sharpness when I zoom in right on the eye of the person. Eyebrowes, eye lashes and cornia aren't as sharp as they should be as par numerous examples on RUclips of this lens review.
What should I do to verify for sure if my copy of the lens is bad or my copy of the camera body is bad.
I checked all AF settings = Area = Flexible spot M, AF-S/AF-C, steady shot ON, shooting RAW, can't figure out what's wrong here.

@@christopherfrost cool. Thanks 😊 I asked because I recently moved from a crop sensor nikon D7200 to a full frame sony a7r3. On my Nikon I used to shoot hand held at about 1/60th of a second and got pretty decent results. With FF my expectations were higher. I believed I can shoot handheld at little lower shutter speeds too. Sony's sensor stabilization also should help. But I guess I will not to play with the camera to find a new safe minimum shutterspeed number.

At 28 f 5.6, I would not call that bitingly sharp extreme corners. With my copy on FF, with distant focus, extreme corners are never sharp even at f 8. They get sharp only at 35 mm from f 5.6.
Otherwise perfect all arounder. Excellent central sharpness. Useful for portraits and street photography. Best at f 4.5 - 7.1. Nice natural colours altough on slightly warm side. I recomend it, too.

Is image quality with this lens on a crop sensor frame just as good as the 17-50mm version on a crop sensor frame?

  • @marcp.1752
    @marcp.1752 9 лет назад

The lens is way good, especially for the asking price - with luck for around 170-200 EUR, in mint condition.
Only annoying thing because the design is way old: the way noisy, conventional DC AF motor, and of course only 28mm
wideangle, not 24mm. For APS-C/DX, the Tamron 17-50/2.8 (without VC) is a much better choice, because it's being designed
for the smaller Image Circle, and also slightly newer design than this 28-75/2.8 Tamron. The 17-50/2.8 is sharper at open Aperture compared to the 28-75/2.8. Like Christopher said, this Tamron 28-75/2.8 is way cheap to have, mount it onto a 5D "classic" and you've got a very decent, cheap FF Setup.

@@christopherfrost Chris that was my exact question too. I was thinking a few people said with this Tamron they try and often stop down to f4 so I was thinking it might be better going for Sigma 24-105 so I get that extra 24mm and will use f4 as my standard. I already have a 50mm1.4 and 85mm 1.8 so I think it will be wise for me to go for the Sigma 24-105. Bless~
