I've seen some lab test results in which the Tamron slightly outperformed the Nikon offering. I bought the Tamron, and I love it.

Just bought the Tamron for doing some professional events and corporate photography and videography work. Your video was a big factor in going with this over the 24-70 f/2.8 S and so far, I'm absolutely glad I did. I do kinda mess the 24-27mm but other than that, the sharpness, light weight and performance at $999 is just unbeatable. Big thank you!

How is it going for you so far?
I've been considering buying this over the Nikon for wedding photography (mostly because the Nikon is so expensive and I'm not one of those 'need to have the logo' people), but would be keen to hear how it is going for professional events, especially the video aspect.

@@AngryAnt0 Hey there! I'm still really pleased with how the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 G2 is performing overall.
I must have gone through dozens of RUclips videos (including this one) researching this lens on both the Nikon Z mount and the Sony E mount versions. So far, I've shared the positive experiences that I've seen on other RUclipsrs videos.
I've really liked it for video as well as the lighter weight makes it easier to use handheld. I don't think I would appreciate using the Nikon 24-70 f/2.8 S as it might be a bit too front heavy with the added weight. Video quality and auto-focus performance has been good as well.
My only minor complaint about this lens has still been the lack of width at 28mm. Again, it's minor and while it would be nice to capture just a bit more of the surrounding environment, I still get by with 28mm.
I think it comes down to whether you need that extra width from 24-27mm and whether you need sharper corners as I've read the Nikon is sharper on the edges but the Tamron holds up fine, especially if you stop down.
For me personally, I can't see myself spending an extra $1,400 (or $1,000 if the NIkon is on sale). Now, if the Nikon also had an internal zoom and perhaps VR, maybe that would entice me a bit more, but neither have that.
So far though, this lens gets the job done and haven't had any issues with it. As long as it performs and clients are happy with it, that's what matters to me.

@@lolfirepoisonftl Thanks for the reply, that's brilliant to hear it's been working out for you. I've been a strictly prime guy for weddings and shoots, but looking to branch back into zoom and always had a soft spot for Tamron, ever since I bought their 70-300 for some light sports on a DSLR many moons ago. I personally would be sticking to 35mm+ I think so the extra 4mm isn't too much of a hassle for me.
I also tend to shoot a at a low F stop more often than not anyway so that's good to hear.
Like you I've spent hours looking at videos etc, trying to see if it's worth buying the Nikon, the price difference is utterly silly isn't it?
I don't believe the Nikon has VR either, so it's a tick in the box for Tamron as far as I'm concerned, like you said though internal zoom so it wouldn't upset the gimbal.
I think you'd just pushed me towards the Tamron over the Nikon, so my bank manager would like to thank you!

@@AngryAnt0 You're welcome! I'm sure you'll enjoy using the Tamron if you do end up going with it.And totally agree on how silly the price difference is. I know the Nikon is a stellar lens but definitely not worth the extra $1,400 when you have this Tamron available. Better off taking the extra savings and upgrading other areas of your equipment that will make a bigger impact on improving your performance.

Hi Ralph. A quick correction on focusing distance myths. In this case, the nearest focusing distances. That distance isn't measured from the front of the lens to the subject, it's measured from the focal plane to the subject. The focal plane (front of the sensor) and that is marked on the top of your Nikon body by a thin short line on one side or the other of the (view)finder. Get a tape measure & prove it to yourself.

Actually the minimum focus distance is measured from the focal plane, not the front lens.

Quick note on measuring minimum focus distance, that’s measured from the sensor plane. Only mention that because it brings the Tamron even closer, which is really impressive for this price point.

why didn't you show the tamron's corners at 2.8? Should be the most important thing. f8 or f16 is always sharp...

    • @RalphMayhewPhotography
      @RalphMayhewPhotography  9 дней назад

HaHa. I used to think the same. At f/2.8 the corners of any photo on any lens will be softer as they’re further away from the centre of the image, which has a shorter distance to the lens than the corners. causing the corners to sit beyond the focal plane of f2.8.
I explain in other videos why I don’t do this test.

24 and 28 is a big difference, 70 vs 75 is not... and the close focus distance is measured from the sensor, not then end of the lens.

LOL, why would you compare a mid level Tamron to Nikon's flagship 24-70. People are obviously going to go for the cheaper option if they're not pros - which is the majority of the population. If anything, compare it to Nikons version of the 28-75
