Mance Ryder liked Jon because he could se that he was an honest man that was gonna keep his promises. Therefore he trusted him already from the beginning. As soon as Jon put an arrow in his chest so he wouldn't be suffering he knew that Jon would keep his promises to the wildlings. Thormund saw that also and he loved Jon already when he first meet him and he was standing with his side all the time to come. He really became a true friend to Jon.

For the record, in the books, Mance is 100% on board with Stannis and fakes his death with the help of Melisandre to scout out Winterfell alongside some wildling spearwives. Jon also gives Stannis an alternative to the wildlings, as several of their factions were likely to refuse, in the form of the Northern Clans, which he accepts after some convincing. In the end, Stannis ends up with a fairly decent portion of wildlings, the North's mountain clans and the support of many Northern houses.
