Nobody expected stannis to win over renly, so backing the person with the massive army made sense. Robb and the other lords probably should have just waited for them to fight it out and then come to an agreement with the victor. Ultimately it made no difference, robbs campaign went to shit when stannis got crushed at Kings Landing.
