Stannis played a large part in losing the war of the five kings because he was too stubborn to compromise with Renly as well as with Robb. Killing Renly and taking over his army actually caused the Tyrells to join the oppositions and instead of aligning with Robb to destroy the Lannister army he chose to attack King's Landing in full force despite knowing of wildfire and it's potential threat. Overall his action caused the downfall of his house as well as House Baratheon.
I've just written a mega reply to this comment on the one written 8 years ago. Alliances with Robb and Renly wouldn't have changed anything, Stannis forces were too small to begin with. In the end, killing Renly meant that Stannis' forces were too isolated from Robb to make a nominal alliance mean anything. Robb would've bent the knee for Sansa anyway, had Stannis taken the capital.
@@fightingmedialounge519This just makes no sense. As I said before, Stannis is isolated on Dragon stone and he'd have to land his army in the Riverlands force march his army past Harrenhal, where Tywin sits with 30,000 men, while crossing hundreds of miles just to meet up with Robb. So what? He adds 5000 men to Robb's meager host, meaning they have enough troops just to match Lord Tywin? The historic point of a toast and clinking your glass with someone else in the first place was to ensure that you'd all drink the same wine at the same time and that there was no poison in the drink. He drank first so that Melisandre wouldn't suspect there was poison in the drink.
It's a common trope to convince the other person the wine isn't poisoned. Also to escape the fact he will probably be burnt alive for the act afterwards if he lives.
Stannis should have joined forces with Robb. He could have pursuaded Robb to abandon his crown if he'd delivered Sansa to him and avenged Ned. And as far as Im aware, Robb didnt know that Ned declared for Stannis before he died.
if Robb was a fool then stannis is even more foolish for staying so long in dragonstone doing nothing, why didn't he crowned himself right after Robert is dead?? how the hell Robb and the notherners supposed to know that he is the true heir if him and Ned keeping that secret to themselves?? LongPipe4U No. She looked into the flames before the small council, and found that somebody was going to poison her that night. She prepared herself with the antidote.
As they always did since season 1, omitting his involvement with Jon Arryn and not explaining why he isn't at court. Worst scenes are especially in season 4, where he burns people for being infidels (nevermind his followers being split in king's men and queen's men), burning Florent simply for not burning figures of the Seven, having him beg to the Iron Bank for coin, and downplaying his success against the wildling army by making it a one-sided massacre and omitting the giants and the wildling cavalry. The problem with Stannis is he listened to a woman. Some may call me sexist or claim I get no this or that, but I am not hating women: I only mean to state women are often of poor judgement and you can see the West failing by over catering to their hysteria. A woman agreed btw, a "boss lady", she said she prefers men as employees as too many women can cause drama and nonsense. Women need men to keep things stable as men are more prone to logic and socialised to not be as emotional.
Melisandre never directed Stannis on how to command, strategise, rule or govern, because she has no education in those fields. Blaming his downfall on the fact that one of his advisors is a woman is quite the cop-out. Stannis's hubris was ultimately the reason for his downfall. He wanted to rule but wanted no allies. Between Renly and Rob Stark, the three could've found a way to surround the Lannisters and defeat them

The thing I don't get is why did he drink first when the poison acts almost instantly so that she would barely have a chance to drink before he's already suffering with it?
D&D's writing. In the books, he doesn't drink first.
And he was so obvious about it too, trying to poison her in front of Stannis’ entire council. At least do it when no one is looking

Waaaaaaait, that maester was the Archbishop in that Johnny English film!!!
This one scene pretty much showed us Renly did have a point about Stannis 😂.
I (Heart of R'Hllor) Stannis!
Stannis says it how it is, whether he likes it or not
Stannis played a large part in losing the war of the five kings because he was too stubborn to compromise with Renly as well as with Robb.
Only good thing Dany did in this non-canon show is reviving House Baratheon.
@@Wallace43266 except that brief alliance would have lead stannis getting all the men he did after killing renly and the tyrells.
It's stupid lol, and neither Stannis nor Robb would've done it even if they wanted to because they gain nothing, Robb would have to lose his crown, and Stannis would have to gain a crown at the whims of the Northerners.
@@Wallace43266 except he can do all that after meeting renly, or just send a raven like he was doing here for his claim.
Robb had decently sized army, and again I wrote brief alliance. As in none of them have to give up anything because their only working together to kill the Lannisters.

I don't understand why he drank the wine unless he wanted to die and take her with him? Or did she by some magic make him drink the wine?
He's old. He's more than happy to die if it means Melisandre dies with him.
Huh, I Just figured her magics switched the poison in the glasses or reflected the harm meant for her to her attacker.
@GreaterGrievobeast55 nah, she's just invulnerable to poison. She does practice magic after all.
Stannis should have joined forces with Robb. He could have pursuaded Robb to abandon his crown if he'd delivered Sansa to him and avenged Ned. And as far as Im aware, Robb didnt know that Ned declared for Stannis before he died.
Imagine Ned had lived and put the whole north behind Stannis. Rob is a bitter fool to have not allied with the one true heir to the iron throne
if Robb was a fool then stannis is even more foolish for staying so long in dragonstone doing nothing, why didn't he crowned himself right after Robert is dead?? how the hell Robb and the notherners supposed to know that he is the true heir if him and Ned keeping that secret to themselves??
Robb and the notherners wouldn't declared for independence if they knew Ned supported Stannis claim.
Is it weird to say i had a crush on Stannis in the books and the show 😂
The thing about making peace with Renly is that Renly would most likely be unwilling to make peace either (unless Stannis supported his claim)
he cold have offered that Renly could be king of the South, while Stannis could be king of Westerlands, Riverlands and Vale.

No. He owed nothing to usurpers like Renly and Robb. Why should he BEG and negotiate for his rights and for the allegiance that both clowns already owed him?
That Stannis refused to ally himself with his brother or Robb Stark was the beginning of his end. He couldve pointed 3 armies at the Lannisters or allowed Robb to deal with the Greyjoy fleet first the. Provided backup, but no, he had to act like a true asshole.
Talk of a bumbling craven. The rightful king does NOT beg for alliances from those who SHOULD swear allegiance to him. And he's still alive in the books. Enjoy your non-canon fanfic.
@@gooby214think it's more. You're outmanned. Come to a common ground and destroy the common enemy. Maybe actually talk to rob saying to join him very least he can deal with Rob after he takes the throne. Won't be surprised if Rob agrees to become warden of the north if he gets sansa back and justice for his father
@@Superfoodcookie That's the silly part is that Rob Stark probably would have agreed to swear fealty to Stannis if it meant destroying the Lannisters. Rob was much less hellbent on ruling than either Stannis or Renly.
Alright this is the last idiotic alliance comment I'm going to reply to. But what do any of you actually think a Stannis-Robb alliance would look like?
Stannis would have to abandon Dragon stone, land 5000 men in the Riverlands, force march his army around Harrenhal where Tywin sits with 30,000 men, just to merge his army with Robb to have a smaller army than Tywin lol.
By this point, Robb is hostile to all the southern kings, so Stannis moves to become THE king, knowing Robb will bend the knee in the end anyway. Had they allied, Robb would lose his crown and the support of his lords, and Stannis just a meaningless nominal compromise.
I never understood it either. Robb's father died for Stannis his crown, and this is how he repaid his oldest son.

This is not what the book said. Dumb and dumber are ruining my man stannis
Oh, and in season 3 they had Stannis being convinced to sacrifice his nephew after only 1 leech, instead of waiting for all 3 kings to die. D&D are disgraces who never should've allowed to touch ASOIAF.
@@gooby214Unfortunately, the burning scene was written by GRRM, who wanted to help dumb down the plot for D&D to understand
@@Wallace43266 I know, but only to remain consistent with D&D's horrible version. Plus, remember that Benioff always did the final editing of scripts, no matter who wrote them. That's how Renly's peach "disappeared" from its episode's script.

Why did he put the poison in the cup? Did he not think anyone saw him do it? I read the books but it’s been so long. I need context lol
Stannis was fucking dumb, he could’ve had the full support of the North if he gave that same letter to Robb
I have no idea why D&D felt that they didn't know what to do with Stannis. A show about war and you can't figure out what to do with one of the best commanders in the 7 kingdoms? He should've stayed alive until the end and became king instead of Bran, that would've at least restored some legitimacy to the throne, seeing as Dany failed to break the wheel and Jon didn't want it and every king/"queen" after Robert was illegitimate.
The Ds were never interested in Stannis's character. The actor was never told anything by them, nor how should he portray him. Those 2 drunks never cared. The moment they decided to go wild and full fanfic in season 5, they immediately got rid of this character.
@@gooby214 He did a great job despite not being given a real direction for the character.

how was robert himself legitimate?
@@godemperorofmankind3.091
1. He should be king over Bran because Bran has zero claim to the throne. Sorry, how will Bran rule for a thousand years?
2. Robert bankrupted the realm, Joffrey is a renowned psychopath and narcissist, and Aerys was literally insane, yet you think Stannis would be the problem king? Stannis’s heir would be his first-born son, who he would likely strive for after becoming King. Even if he doesn’t, Shireen isn’t ‘sickly’ she’s a learned girl with a kind and strong personality, not to mention legitimate. Why wouldn’t people support her claim?
3. How wasn’t Robert legitimate? Sure there are no Targaryen laws which state that the throne can be claimed through right of conquest, but that can easily be written in by the new king. That’s the thing with laws, they’re as fickle as they are consistent.
@@Timebomb_19 they kinda already went over this. the realm won't accept a woman. the whole Rhaenyra thing.

He's essentially sacrificing his life to make her drink the poison, but she probably saw it coming from the fire and took the antidote before-hand.
@@yidingliu8663 There is no antidote from this type of poison. At least not a non-magical one. Plus it's implied that the choker protected her with sorcery. Anyway, this scene in the show is stupid and fake. Cressen didn't commit suicide and didn't drink first. He watched Melisandre drinking and not getting poisoned, was too skeptical to believe in magic, and Melisandre warned him not to drink it. He drank anyway and died. Melisandre did not use any antidote. Maester Cressen would've known of its existence. Martin wrote this to confirm the existence of powers unknown to maesters. Not "oh she just took antidote lul." The problem with Stannis is he listened to a woman.
His right-hand man Ser Davos even suggested they attack blackwater bay without Melisandre, and we know how that went. There’s no way to know of course, but if Stannis had brought her to the assault on Kings Landing, perhaps things wouldn’t have gone so terribly.
