Well there's been 7 seasons of talking building up to the battles in Season 8. If this last season just had talking, how fucking upset do you think people would be? It would be a boring conclusion. They have injected more money into this season than any other TV show ever has, and that budget has to be used for the huge set pieces and epic battle sequences. I think the show tied the whole series together nicely with all the political discourse and intrigue leading up to the final awesome confrontations. That was always the plan for Game of Thrones, as along with the show's success, they've been able to go bigger and better each year.
Justaperson building up to epic battles means that characters become dumb and mute? The story isn’t complete once the battles begin. This isn’t a 2hour movie, it’s a series that can afford to incorporate both. Most people who don’t watch GOT don’t watch because they didn’t want to invest several episodes worth of getting to know the characters and the lands. The ones who invested that time want more. it’s still good ,but it’s not all it could be.
There is nothing wrong with CGI and massive battles, especially if they are well done. I prefer it that way in the latter of the show. What's important is those moments in between battles. The dialogue wasn't the same.
Conversations between Varys and Baelish are my favorite scenes in the show. It is probably one of the few instances where the conversation is honest. They know the game and they've been major players of it for years. During these private dialogues, they have too much respect for one another as opponents to even attempt to use false modesty or flatterings that they show others.
Mine as well. Being that Varys is my faviorite GOT character. He and Baelish do share a certain scent of vile characteristics. Yet they both have remained untouched in high council. Littlefinger is winning in my opinion.
***** Oh ho. The power plays that Varys has in store for us are well beyond anything that Littlefinger has pulled, and not for narrow self interest. Here Littlefinger thought that he'd pulled out Vary's true allegiance, to the Pentoshi - Magister Illrio who'd been helping the Targeryan heirs. Before Littlefinger could even go beyond making an implied threat with this piece of information, it's shown that Vary's has a well established reason for the meeting - namely informing the King that Dany was with child. Vary's played Littlefinger here. He allowed Littlefinger think that he had something over him... when he didn't.
I adore the love hate relationship between these two. I seriously want one of these two to win the game. Although at the moment, I'm on Team Baelish, sorry Varys Supporters. Still friends?
I always loved this contrast between those two. Littlefinger spreading chaos all over the seven kingdoms and Varys running around trying to gather the ruins. Those two in my opinion are the true players smart, cunning, even diabolic sometimes.
I LOVE THIS SCENE! Definitely one of the best scenes in the show and its hilarious as hell! I could watch this over and over and still laugh like I did the first time! They are both definitely some of my favorite characters! XD
One of the best scenes in the whole show. Was incredible when I first saw it. Imagining these two in the shadows while the high lords play their game of thrones…
I miss these twos conversations. There is so much going on, when they talk between eachother. Two very smart people, with maybe the deadliest minds in Westeros. They are at the top:)
Can't help but feel a great deal of this show is about these two characters, influencing the world from the shadows and trying to save it for the good of the realm (Varys) or using its resources to get what you desire, no matter what happens to the realm (Baelish).
Is Varys' last line "haven't you heard?" whilst smiling meant to indicate that he was actually faking and that this news from far away justifies Illyrio's presence in the eyes of the crown? or Simply that he knew something Littlefinger didn't?
sertic1 he knew something littlefinger didn't. The whole scene was an act by Varys. He knows he's smarter than littlefinger and I feel, played him as a pawn when needed this whole time.
i agree that they ruined them, but then i am wondering if it is not better for them to die. I mean, in GOT, if you cannot keep up a great character, killing him might be the best solution. He wasn't doing anything anymore anyway
I love how they always try to one up each other. It's almost like a game to them. They aren't friends, but they talk like friends, but are strictly professional, but also cunning.
When Littlefinger says "You do move quietly" I do wish we weren't able to hear Varys' footsteps immediately after, and quite loudly at that. Was it really that difficult to edit that out, I wonder.
Nah varys knew he didn't need to put on a face, in this case he didn't need to hide his footsteps right now. It was really more of a layer as he was pretending to be vulnerable to little finger so he could get info. The loud footsteps after are deliberate... Think about it next time.
The sound of his foot steps(actually "all foot steps in cinema") are added later in post (like cgi.) I watched a RUclips video. There a guy that's a prop manager that was explaining how a lot of this stuff works and the products that they use. He had billiard balls that are muffled to be quieter than normal paper bags, books, and a ton of other stuff. It's been a while since I watched it, so I can't provide a link. So if you're wanting "proof" that I'm not wrong or lying, you'll have to search for it. BUT, back to the original point I was making. Getting rid of the sound of his foot steps would've been as simple as....not putting them in there.
*translation:* "I'm smarter than you." "No, I'm smarter than YOU." "I'm the only person around here who is smart enough to see you fakely sucking up to everyone in sight, playing every winning side until you end up on the throne." "Oh cuz you're not doing the exact same shit?" "We're friends aren't we? By the way I could get you killed." "I could get you killed even easier."
Hey hey here i am to answer 5 years later. Many people call the writers dumb and dumber now, but the series didn't decline because they didn't know how to adapt the books, but because they didn't care to anymore. D&D used to be great at adapting the show and to fill the blanks with amazingly written scènes that sounded like they came from the books themselves, but then all of a sudden they lost interest in the source material. Well not all of a sudden. The red wedding came and went, and there wasn't a whole lot after that they were excited to put on the screen. They got offers for a star wars project and liked that a whole lot more. So that's it right? Give got away to other competent writers after season 4 and walk away? Well, no. I said D&D weren't dumb, but they are greedy and arrogant. They wanted FULL credit for writing got, which means to wrap things up as fast as possible. Its not a coincidence that they didn't adapt Aegon, Stannis or the real Euron, that would take time that they didn't have and so they pretend that it didn't exist. Got didn't die because they didn't know how to save it, but because they didn't care to
lmao this two should have scenes together all time.Best relationship of the entire show.pure entertainment. Littlefinger is awesome.one of best characters ever
Varys and Littlefinger are amongst the two most intelligent characters in the series. Both are exceptionally skilled at the art of deception and render their influence through networks of spies and proficient understandings of how the game is played. Both know the importance of being secretive and Varys in particular is a master of disguise who can essentially disappear whenever necessary. Just having a nice chat about each others treasonous behaviour in the Red Keep's big echoey throne room.
Littlefinger: I thought you might broker a meeting, you know help your fearless leader see the light about his new friend on the council. Varys: And I should tell him, what? Make nice or invest heavily in petroleum jelly? Littlefinger: Hey. His ass, his choice.
The dialogue from then to now is night and day. Show is all spectacle now, these great interchanges with variety in pace, diction, flow and that actually reveal character as opposed to plot have been entirely neglected.
Look at how Baelish turns the tables! He gathers information and he knows when to use it. I think this is the perfect scene to show someone who wants to know what GoT is about. It's a perfect example of the game.
I don't think you understand, its Varys who turns the tables.. Baelish says that he saw Varys talking to someone (Baelish thinks he's giving information to the forigner and that only he has noticed) but at the end when Varys says "Disturbing news from far away, hadn't you heard?" It shows that he was infact getting information from this person and will be sharing it in the small council meeting with the king, so it is in fact Varys who remains on top of Baelish in this scene.
Andrew R Not quite, though. The meeting was the one Arya spied on, and raises some real questions about Varys' loyalty. To call it small council business would be a stretch, however he spun it in this scene.
I did not even realise that LF saw him. In the books Arya saw Varys although she did not know it was him down in the tunnels disguised; he and the man from across the seas (Illyrio) were talking about killing Eddard because Varys was not ready for his big reveal as yet which was for Aegon to take the throne as the rightful king (not being done in the show though), so they had agreed that they have to get rid of Eddard since he appeared to be causing trouble/messing up Varys et al plans. Arya went and told Eddard and that's when he decided he had to leave KL but one Sansa ran and told the Cersei and therein led to his death
These two together would be an unstoppable force but Chaos and Order are not meant to cooperate. Varys would never trust someone as equally influential and cunning as him and it's vice versa for Littlefinger! Chaos and Order are enemies that conflict when 1 force gets out of hand the other force quickly checks it to get it back in line. That is relationship Varys and Littlefinger have both 2 different forces trying to achieve their own agenda by getting ahead of the other but can't seem to stay ahead because when 1 makes a decisive move the other retaliates to even the playing field again. Oh I just love their rivalry!
I disagree, I think chaos and order serve one another. it's the reason why varys ends up doing what he did in the end of a ADWD where he kill those two people. He kind of became like littlefinger there in that he wanted to create chaos, so taht he can later restore peace. in fact his scehemes kind of involve putting people at odds against each other. he is more like littlefinger tahn eh realizes, but for different goals.
I really like both characters a lot. I am also quite glad this tv series is able to add elements the the style of the books just couldn't allow at their time due to how they were set up.
the baelish and varys scenes are one of my favorites scenes on the show. baelish is essentially the main villain on this show, he's caused all the events that have taken place on the show, from Jon arryn to the blackwater. and varys is the hero of the show. he's backed up Ned and tyrion. and he takes on littlefinger. varys vs baelish is what the show is actually about, a strategic war, a game of chess. and the people are the prices. question is... who will win ?
+Sean Gillies I think both are kinda evil in the books but LF is the more honest one with his intentions while Vary's is a lot more murky. I think that Vary's really does think he's doing what's best for the realm but it's not what we all think is right, like supporting the Mummer Dragon instead of Danny. I could be wrong but he really hates magic and it's hinted that Dragon's are the source of magic.
"LF is the more honest one" wow, I dunno what stuff you're smoking man. LF is a pathological liar and schemer. Although he didn't start the Stark-Lannister feud, he kept blowing on the embers by blaming Tyrion for the attempted murder on Bran, convincing Lysa to kill Jon Arryn and tell Cat the Lannisters were responsible, then he gave information about the royal bastards to make sure Ned would discover the truth, betrayed him and Cat, used Sansa and Tyrion to carry out a kingslaying... Varys did none of that (to our knowledge), he plotted with the exiled Targs that's true, had some people killed at the end of book V (soon in the show I think), but he's nowhere near the level of LF in terms of evil.
What you said is true also and that is part of the brilliance of George's books. Neither I nor you is gonna tell the outcome until the books are done. We can guess but we don't know....
I am sad that they "removed" most of these excellent characters from King's Landing and even the main plot for now. Their conversations were the highlights of the show. Petyr moved to the Vale, Varys sailed to Essos, Oberyn died, Tywin died and Tyrion had to escape. Only Olenna Tyrell and Cersei stayed there, and Margery but she was never really a "player" of this level.
Bob Miter I saw the 5th season. Littlefinger and Olenna appeared for 1 scene each and they achieved nothing. At least nothing as of this season. Varys and Tyrion were mostly separated. This season, I definitely missed the Game from Game of Thrones.
I just noticed that the scenes with Varys and littlefinger in the throne room add littlefinger getting closer and closer to the iron throne 🤣He even gets close enough to cut his finger on the blade. But I don't think he ever had the heart to finally sit in it

This is top 5 one of the best scenes in the entire series. Only dialogue, yet so powerful.
I adore the love hate relationship between these two. I seriously want one of these two to win the game.
Although at the moment, I'm on Team Baelish, sorry Varys Supporters. Still friends?
Bowl of Onions rip
I like to think we're friends... :)
Cynical Bread I would have been equally happy if either won.
Team Baelish :)
Bc if we aren’t am tell Robert about Illyrio
I always loved this contrast between those two. Littlefinger spreading chaos all over the seven kingdoms and Varys running around trying to gather the ruins. Those two in my opinion are the true players smart, cunning, even diabolic sometimes.
I LOVE THIS SCENE! Definitely one of the best scenes in the show and its hilarious as hell! I could watch this over and over and still laugh like I did the first time! They are both definitely some of my favorite characters! XD
GOT seasons 1 - 4 was prime television. Genius writing and masterful acting, combined with well written characters.
One of the best scenes in the whole show. Was incredible when I first saw it. Imagining these two in the shadows while the high lords play their game of thrones…
"... haven't you heard"?....- the most painful insult.
I miss these twos conversations. There is so much going on, when they talk between eachother. Two very smart people, with maybe the deadliest minds in Westeros. They are at the top:)
Gods I know this exchange word for word. Such great writing.
I found these quiet conversations endlessly more entertaining than the giant battles that the series relied upon in the final seasons.
Hahaha Varys pretends to be caught off guard by Littlefinger's 'gotcha' moment, when he was well aware that Littlefinger knew, and was expecting it.
The grandmasters of the game. These two will collide again in Season 7, I can feel it
I hope so. It would be a shame if either of them died before getting another confrontation/reunion. These 2 on the screen together is gold.
They completely ruined them. Littlefinger is dead. Such a pity. 2 awesome characters and they have wasted them just like that. Fuck you D&D
i agree that they ruined them, but then i am wondering if it is not better for them to die. I mean, in GOT, if you cannot keep up a great character, killing him might be the best solution. He wasn't doing anything anymore anyway
Littlefinger is dead and Varys is "dead". :(
lazy writing killed littlefinger, bad end to a great character
Varys's little 'Haven't you heard?' jab like he's 18 chess moves ahead of Littlefinger while he's playing checkers.
“Was that you under the bed?” Lmaoooooo bro if I could talk like this I’d just talk to talk. Just for fun
I love the dialogue between Little Finger and Varys, it feels like a chest match: each one of them is trying to outwit each other.
Think about it next time.
it wouldn't be a question of editing it out, they would have made an affirmative choice to put it in, as with all foley work.
The sound of his foot steps(actually "all foot steps in cinema") are added later in post (like cgi.)
I watched a RUclips video.
Varys was one of my favorite characters. So sly, so clever, such smart dialogue. This is what the later seasons completely lacked.
omg the competition for who has more info is onnn!!
Varys be winning then little finger be like
But u got no balls tho 💀
The way Renly interrupts them: Like a boss
*translation:*
"I'm smarter than you."
"No, I'm smarter than YOU."
"I'm the only person around here who is smart enough to see you fakely sucking up to everyone in sight, playing every winning side until you end up on the throne."
"Oh cuz you're not doing the exact same shit?"
"We're friends aren't we? By the way I could get you killed."
"I could get you killed even easier."
The way Varys shudders is wonderful
I love that neither can hurt the other because they each have too much blackmail lmao
What the hell happened to this kind of writing? This is completely original material, so it's not just that they had the books to draw from.
George Martin writed script for first 4 seasons, i think.
@@jakubreindl7808 Not all of it. He usually wrote one episode per season (e.g. the Purple Wedding).
Got didn't die because they didn't know how to save it, but because they didn't care to
@@rinkhoek3130
There's more tension here than the entire battle of Winterfell, and it's just two guys battling through innuendo.
I love these 2
They both played the game so well they don't bother to bs each other
Fuck action and battles… *this* is what prime GoT was all about man. Such sharp dialogue
Man they worked well together, masterful acting
We were all complaining about the season 7-8 ball and dick jokes being there, but 2 of the greatest varys vs Littlefinger fights starts with them
imagine a guard standing there awkwardly behind listening
It’s like their both playing Chess ♟😭
"was that you under the bed" 💀
One of the best scenes of the whole series.
This is like watching Sherlock and Moriarty verbally spar. Man these two are who we should have seen in the final scene.
two most underrated character of the show...but I do believe their plans are bigger than anyone's in the show...
oh boy I bet you were disappointed
How much I miss those dialogues...
lmao this two should have scenes together all time.Best relationship of the entire show.pure entertainment.
They make me laugh I miss them together giving snarky witty comments back and forth
I love these epic exchanges between the man with the highest voice and the man with the deepest voice.
Pimp vs eunuch
possibly the most intelligent gossip ever.
One of the best fight scenes ever and not a single weapon was drawn 🤣
Littlefinger: I thought you might broker a meeting, you know help your fearless leader see the light about his new friend on the council.
Varys: And I should tell him, what? Make nice or invest heavily in petroleum jelly?
Littlefinger: Hey. His ass, his choice.
I love the wire
“Since you last me or since I last saw you?” Lmao I love these guys
The dialogue from then to now is night and day. Show is all spectacle now, these great interchanges with variety in pace, diction, flow and that actually reveal character as opposed to plot have been entirely neglected.
D&D wrote this scene too. Strange.
1:54
Littlefinger: Saw me with your own eyes?
Varys: Eyes I own.
Holy shit, never noticed this before, possibly the best line in the entire show
I thought he was doing a wierd play on words for humour but fuck i didnt realise that.
Andrew R That's true, I did miss that when writing the comment.
Andrew R Not quite, though. The meeting was the one Arya spied on, and raises some real questions about Varys' loyalty. To call it small council business would be a stretch, however he spun it in this scene.
“Do you know I don’t know where they are? Oh, and we had all been so close…”
One of the best scenes of season 1 IMO
"since you last saw me, or since i last saw you?"
Sh**, Littlefinger basically tells the viewer who Varys' little birds were in this scene.
The context knowing that Varys's little birds are mute children adds context to Petyr's jab in the beginning
These two characters were done so dirty.
+Bo Banesz Chaos and Order. I think you nailed it perfectly !
Marine T Thank you.
+MrWalker1000 Well... to each their own.
Lord Varys is a wonderful character and one of my most favourite. I like him even more after watching the last episode.
Varys is actually cutting with his insults, Petyr just says ‘haha ur gay and u have no balls’
It was an "I saw you" battle lol
These two snarking at each other is just golden :').
I really like both characters a lot. I am also quite glad this tv series is able to add elements the the style of the books just couldn't allow at their time due to how they were set up.
Little did you know the next 5 years would be a nose dive in quality 😂
@@shadows-xn3ed ugh hahahaha
I read that in Morgan Freeman’s voice lol.
Glad to see that Varys is the only one that noticed Petyr Baelish’s corruptive ways.
the baelish and varys scenes are one of my favorites scenes on the show. baelish is essentially the main villain on this show, he's caused all the events that have taken place on the show, from Jon arryn to the blackwater. and varys is the hero of the show. he's backed up Ned and tyrion. and he takes on littlefinger. varys vs baelish is what the show is actually about, a strategic war, a game of chess. and the people are the prices. question is... who will win ?
I cringe when people claim to know what the show is really about. None of us know.
Varys=Fire; Baelish=Ice. Two grandmaster chess players looking to win the long game ;)
The second he mentioned Illyrio, Varys became a mixture of enraged/annoyed/Scared that someone actually knew
Varys won this encounter: “disturbing news, from far away…haven’t you heard”
My fave characters :D
Thanks for uploading!
Bindair Dundat dont worry, LF is back
Bob Miter I saw the 5th season. Littlefinger and Olenna appeared for 1 scene each and they achieved nothing. At least nothing as of this season. Varys and Tyrion were mostly separated. This season, I definitely missed the Game from Game of Thrones.
Bindair Dundat they didn't achieve nothing, Littlefinger told Olenna that he was going to use Lancel to get Cersei arrested
Bob Miter Very little compared to scenes like this.
Bindair Dundat hopefully he will follow through on that plan he told Cersei, and take down the Boltons in season 6
I just noticed that the scenes with Varys and littlefinger in the throne room add littlefinger getting closer and closer to the iron throne 🤣He even gets close enough to cut his finger on the blade. But I don't think he ever had the heart to finally sit in it
Maybe the best actors on the show, along with Peter.
So sharp and intelligent dialogues, It is my favourite add-on from the series to the story (since those dialogues are not on the books).
"Was that you under the bed?"
LOLLLLLLL
The way these two roast eachother reminds me of legs Vs hands in scary movie.
