It was relatively successful. You did achieve a working 30lb bow. I would say that there is some modest value here, especially for beginners just starting out on learning to build. Well done.
I think if you add in the possibility of world war 3 or nesr extinction level event turning a 2x4 into a 30lb bow means the ability to effectively hunt small game as well as self defense In urban areas after ammo for firesrms is no longer in circulation
I homeschooled my kids and my son began the march through toolmaking at seven years old. He began with the mastery of deceptively simple fire. As soon as he could reliably light a fire by rubbing sticks together, he moved on to the next stage. Stone tools, arrow heads, and spear and bow making were his great love for more than a year. I remember when he finally found a book on bow making and he suddenly realized what he'd been doing wrong. He progress was rapid after that.
At twelve he was forging copper and bronze, iron at fourteen, explosives and the basics of chemistry at fifteen, and at sixteen he began to experiment with electricity and electronics. He loved it all.
I'll never forget my sense of doom when the kids excitedly dragged me out to see the 14 foot trebuchet they'd constructed while "playing" in the field. It was fired once when I wasn't home. (The kids confessed that little tidbit when they were in their 20's.) It worked and the machine survived, but scared the hell out of him and he cooled it for awhile.
I'll tell every parent, this is the best way for kids to learn. They absorb so much knowledge about history, cultures, math, and the properties of so many things and won't even realize that they're gaining an education. This is the way to create lifelong learners. Just let them love their natural inclination to seek out more.
IDEA: go back through failed "will it bow" videos and change it to "it WILL bow" and make any modifications to make the bow work!
Absolutely gutted for you man. My first attempt at bow making did the same. 4 Days of hand tooling a long bow and at full draw... boom.

You were on the right track by shortening the bow. I would have cut it down to 48”and re-tillered it. Then you would have a Comanche style bow with a drawlength of about 15”.
And you would have hit the 40 lb. Mark.

It Bows.
I work construction and I always wondered how a 2x4 bow would perform. This taught me a big lesson on the types of wood. You should try a water treated 2x4 next. They tend be stronger and their fibers hold up under tension I've noticed. *Although now that I think about it I assume that would would be more prone to warping and settling.
I've made a couple of successful (spruce) bows from 2x4s. They needed to be long, at least 3 inches wide and thin in section to to minimize compression ferrets and failure for a 40 pounds bow. The most successful ones were 30ish pound "rabbit bows" that flexed through the handle.
Found that choosing the right piece of spruce is the biggest thing - next to good grain is tight rings (seen 4 growth rings per inch way out to 20). Seems that 2x4s are made from the poorest wood that was not suitable for other lumber - try looking through the wider boards for better materials.

Can you do a maple bow using the outer soft wood as the backing and the inner hard wood as the belly?

To be far that still makes a good material for a beginner to learn the basics with, how to shape the wood and tillering in general. You could even split it down depth wise in to two pieces and get two shots at it, you'd just have to glue some of the off cuts to the handle area. Possibly a really cheap way off teaching someone the basics of the trade.
Personally I'd call it a success on that score and you now know that a 28" draw with the material needs a 72" bow, I'd love, as others have said, to see how it stayed after a month of using it.

Perhaps a bit of heat, to the belly, to help resist the compression? And to increase the snappy poundage,

Another great video mate. Something I've wondered for a long time is how well strips of pvc would work for a bow belly, especially for a lighter wood like this. Pvc is already known for making a decent bow on its own, but I just want to know how it does in a composite.

Now I do remember you making an honestly pretty good bow out of wood from Menards and fiberglass tape? I feel like that’s the best way to start because then you can have an actual usable bow for little money invested. Idk tho I’m not expert and have yet to make one but your old video is the blueprint I plan to follow
Here's a weird thought: make a flat bow like this one, tiller, shoot, get poundage, etc.. then recurve the same bore and see the difference.. reckon that might be fun.
I was thinking if a will it bow, making a bow out of leather and rawhide as only material besides hide glue would it bow?
I would be interested to see if you could make a hunting weight bow out of a 2x4 utilizing the Penobscot bow design. Maybe even just see how heavy a bow you can make.

What if you had a bamboo back and belly? I feel like a soft wood would work well enough as a core with the right back and belly. I haven't tried it myself, I've only done self bows so far and don't have access to tools or a workshop at the moment to try it.

as much as the strength matter so does the elasticity of it. wood that is too hard will have a tougher time bending and extending. you need a balance of a wood that can stretch and compress. but you can try it. not saying you can't but it will be hard.
It might be awesome to use in a horse bow/ asiatic bow. Use in handle and siyah.
you may want to do a little homework there on hard woods. Australian Buloke is only around 3700lbf hardness, certain Acacia woods are around 1000lbf harder on the janka scale, roughly 20% harder.

If you're going for a long-con, you can get cheap saplings from the US forestry service and grow your own wood.

What you proved is that a functional self-bow can be made from cheap lumber. That's nothing to sneeze at.
I have a question ( and this may be rude , I dunno this is the first bow making video I’ve ever watched ) Could you use an angle grinder to remove the initial material and shape the wood ?
You can actually tiller a bow more accurately if you have a more narrow point of contact on the handle. You can see which side is more stiff earlier in the process and end up with a stronger bow more easily.
Would mind explaining that tillering process with that triangle and pencil? Thx!

Surely they make 2x4's from heavier wood. What about resin stabilizing the core?
2X4's are either spruce or pine. Fir is available I think. Cedar for sure but no way cedar would work unless it was a very heavy, bulky, bow or very low draw weight
If you look at the mill stamps, you'll usually see SPF printed on most 2x4 construction lumber. SPF is spruce, pine, and fir.

I would have used a draw knife to carve the belly for a better tiller. But a saw works just fine.

It's an invasive species here in the eastern US and is everywhere where I live. I made simple stick bows out of it when I was a kid and wondered how it would work if more time was put into it.
What if you cut a 2×4 into thin pieces and then stuck it back together and amde a bow from that?

From my perspective, most 2X4's at all of the Big Box stores are already BOWED.
I encountered the same to brake my bow at 30# using 2x3.
What if you had oiled the bow? Kiln dried wood is just too dry. Mineral oil or linseed oil. You might lose a pound or two of draw weight. It would probably cause the wood to take a set faster. But you might have hit your draw weight.
Would a penobscott design variant using the 2x4 made it to 40+ lbs in draw-weight?

Done 3 already from pine boards, from 23lbs to 34lbs. Flat pyramid bows work best IMO.

I think making a bow out of fishing rod or fishing pole could be hard but interesting
shortening it AND expecting it to draw to a higher weight... that's just asking too much. That's like asking the bow before it was shortened to go to 55 or 60 pounds. If you want to make a 40 pound bow that draws to 28 inches, you can try making it extra long as well as extra wide, and it will work. There are those native american paddle bows that would be a good design for something like douglas fir or willow.

Does cutting the bow down to increase the poundage actually make it shoot an arrow faster? There's some sort of relationship between the length of a bow and the smoothness of the energy transfer, right? Guess it might not matter much at those two different lengths.

The amount of work you put into it, say 10 hours at 10 dollars an hour, you're better off buying a cheap starter bow to see if you like the sport. Or better yet join an open door club-day and borrow a bow.
I think he’s already familiar with the sport. This was an opportunity to test his skill with soft wood.
