I've just taken up archery and as a long time woodworker I'm very keen to make my own bow. Your videos are going to help me a ton. Looks like i've got a load of new videos to binge watch.
Awesome video! As a Canadian I would like to see a bow made out of a hockey stick and hockey tape as backing.
'You dont need anything special to make bows.'
-has workshop filled with specialty tools
Needless to say, now im subscribed.
I don't see any specialty tools in that shop. the closets I can see is one of the two sanders.... but they are pretty universal sanders.... sure they may not be in every garage.... but most amature wood workers would have them.
@@nickgidzak2804 I was being facetious. Moving into a trade and aquiring everything you need can be a daunting step to many.
@@Drewsel For me it took about 8 years. watching rummage sales, buying things on sale, and getting things that were "Good enough for now"
I know this will get hate...but... My father has a full wood-working shop with all these tool and all the toys you want. When he died, my mom tasked me with cleaning out some of the junk from the shops and afterwards she said "Well, it's yours now". I have no fucking clue how to use 90% of this stuff... Slowly been teaching my self and watching wood working videos.
You can't hurt yourself using a drawknife properly, your arms dont come back far enough for the blade to touch your chest.
your channel has been the best youtube recommendation of the year thus far. really hope to see it grow!
It grew by about 1000 subs just over last night...
@@kramerammonsarchery do u think u can fix a broken bow limb like tgat the way u spliced that wood at the handle with epoxy
@@dariuswhite2543 I'd say depends on the poundage and youd probably want some badass glue like loctite just be careful not like I'm a professional
i'd seen a bowtie. now i've seen a tie bow
Yeah I once made a bow from a Volkswagen transporter 1962torsion bar leaf and English electric fence wire the kids loved it
And naturally wanted to shoot medieval style
Tae Bo has been around for a while though
And it sucks
bruh

Good job, loving the content. One request: Lengthen the shooting sequences. People like seeing arrows fly :)
Yyyyeeeeesssssss!!!!
here's one; make a recurve out of whiskey cask staves.
I tried that once....
It ruined my liver....
Yes,yes, yes! This is the same idea that I want to see...☝️😉👍

Estoy aprendiendo a hacer arcos para mi niño pequeño. Yo canal es lo máximo. Gracias!!! I'm leaning how to make bows for my little boy. Your channel is amazing. Thank you!!!
Great video! I wish I had this 8 years ago when I tried my hand and making bows. I think barrel staves and burlap for the backing would be an amazing combination.
Making Bows was easy as an 10 years old with only a sheath knife . it only gets harder the older you are. 66 years now and last bow made at 14 and a crossbow from a car leaf spring at about 22 . after your video i fancy another go .from the UK
As like a few others recommended pvc. I tried 1” pvc schedule 40 and it works well. For me it was a bit challenging tho to flatten it out evenly and figuring out an arrow rest.
Use the polyester fabric without the PVC coating. I used to work at a manufacturing company of pvc coated polyester fabric, The nylon threads are damm strong. Should definitely make a good backing.
Oh, I'd love to see a traditional ram bone bow. Think they're fascinating! Keep up the great work. Big love from Yorkshire UK!
If it's outside of Yorkshire it's not worth bloody visiting 😀
Well done, I got a lot to learn every bow I make I break it 😞 trying to get something from your videos to successfully make a usable bow. I’ll keep trying but not feeling positive just yet, living in Australia most of our woods are hard woods very hard to make them bend . Ie pallet wood is mostly rubbish knotted pine tho some are hard woods and heavy very heavy to handle, as always a very nice video , thank you and again you still produced a nice bow. 👍
I am from Tunisia and I support your Facebook and Instagram pages as well. I like your works.
4:21. Oh my god that’s amazing. Thanks for not cutting that out. So awesome. We all do dumb stuff from time to time. At least it didn’t go in your eyes or mouth.
You’ve made my lockdown more Bareable. Thank you. Also I have gained skills to survive the societal breakdown

Hey Kramer I have been enjoying your videos and I know your Canadian twin brother....Pioneer Pauly....! Some day I would like to attempt making my own bow and you have inspired me to get back to shooting. God bless and stay healthy, Mike in sunny Florida
Great job.
As a kid we used to “acquire” pieces of chestnut fence to make a crude bow with bits of string and my Farther would laugh at us. So if you do read this, would you consider making a chestnut bow?
Thank you.
Ps. subscribed 👍
I used to bow hunt slot when I was around 13-20 yrs old, my favorite part was practicing and getting a quarter size grouping at 35yrds. Obviously with a high end Matthews compounds bow. Your channel makes me want to make a beautiful long bow and just target shoot. You are one of the few TRUE diy craftsman on RUclips. Thanks for the awesome content and getting me wanting to shoot again
You obviously have good bow making skills, and are fortunate to have a well equipped shop.
So here is the ultimate challenge- -
Can you make a bow from a toothpick??🥹
Loved the music!
Regarding the tie, I'm assuming you didn't shell out for a pure actual silk tie, but settled for a polyester tie. Effectively, you're just using what is also referred to as "poor man's fiberglass." Any porous cloth set in place with waterproof aliphatic resin glue. You could use any polyester cloth from a fabric store to achieve the same results. But the tie was an interesting take on it! Who among us doesn't have a tie destined for the bin that could be put to this use!
i think a old ratchet strap would make a good back ;)
FRIEND, YOU HAD A LOT OF WORK TO MAKE THIS BOW, BUT IT WAS WORTH IT. IT WAS VERY PROFESSIONAL. CONGRATULATIONS!
I'd love to see a bow made from a whiskey barrel. Staves and hoops!
I'd love to see a will it bow ep where you make wine barrel planks into a bow.
Bravissimo!!! Bellissimo video....complimenti!
see from the title i thought he would use the tie as the string
Alex Kennedy I also thought that too lol 😂
Alex Kennedy same
Same but then again I knew it wouldn’t flex enough to be any good
Unless he like unthreaded it then tun those threads into a string
@@mathewcobb9443 you dont actually want the string to stretch or flex, if that's what you meant, you want it so the string stretches as little as possible so the bow wood can transfer as much energy as possible in to the arrow, the flex comes from the bow, not the string itself.
I was expecting to see the tie as the bowstring.. Lol
Great video!
You would make an awesome pvc bow....good job! Very interesting.personable.informative. I am a fan.
Great vid. Love finding someone so passionate and creative. I'll save you the trouble from experience, don't try an old scaffolding board! I was attracted by the straight grain but it turned out to be white pine. Backed with fibre tape but way too soft for me for even practice. Pretty piece all the same.
Man, I feel the burn after this one. Tae-Bo is great cardio! (how has no one made a tae-bo joke yet????)
First time seeing your channel, first time seeing the bow making process. I was ENTHRALLED. Thank you for the excellent content.
Krammer: "I'm going to use this oak pallet to make a bow"
Me: " pallets made from oak??"
Kramer, after several days of work..: " I dont think this pallet was made of oak.."
A majority of pallets are actually made out of oak and pine. I even found some nice walnut and poplar in a few.
correct! Pallets are disposable, sacrificial hardware mass produced. even the "good" ones aren't made from anything other than "SPF" - Spruce, Pine, or Fir. all very soft, inexpensive woods. if you were to find a pallet made from something else, it's likely either strip ply (good plywood, but components too small to efficiently re-use) or far chunkier to help it endure months of constant banging, being stabbed, pushed, dragged, stabbed, application of ridiculous forces, and so on.
Depends on what country the pallets come from, and what they carry.
i got some curly maple off of a pallet. it made beautiful knife handles.
The guy at the actual pallet store(wharehouse, manufacture, company, whatever you wanna call it) around my area said they use aspen and pine.
At first I thought why would you bother , halfway through I was hooked. I also liked the comments which showed the “ what if “ nature of your viewers. I look forward to seeing more.
I'm a carpenter and furniture Craftsman,,30+ yrs.I would really like to see you do one from CHERRY.
Or Walnut because these 2 are durable.
And if the market is right, maybe id get in the game to make one out of international woods, just for fun
You never know what you're going to get with pallets. Really depends where they come from. I found some old pallets years ago shipped from South America. Turned out to be teak and mahogany. Made a beautiful dresser and night stands with it. Looks like I'll be attempting my first bows soon. Great videos. I'm now subscribed! Looking forward to new videos!!
A lot of Euro pallets are made out of Spruce or Hem-Fir, a mix of hemlock and fir cut at the sawmills. So without knowing the species you don't really know the character of the pallet wood that he was using! Better to use some species that you know unless you can tell the difference.
A friend is a master wood worker. He raids the trash of marble/stone importers. The pallats and cages for their deliveries are made from whatever wood is handy where the stone is quarried. The stuff comes from all over the world so we often scored some pretty amazing stuff. Got a good size bunch of purple heart one time.
You should try to put the linseed oil on the wood before the glue. It will do two things. It will reduce the amount of glue, and it will strengthen the wood. You will have less problems with hinging. At least that is what i came out with. The bows are acting much better after using the oil in production... :D
que pegamento se usa para esto?
Not a bad channel to watch, you have so much to show people who want try the sport of archery
Last year, I built some cabinets for our off grid cabin out of some oak pallets, I think I may have some oak pallet pieces at the cabin, next time i go there, I will see what is stacked up there behind the cabin. I may have some to try this with as well. Gonna be a fun year my friend. Cant wait to get out of this soft cast :)
Ha, I have a bunch of these wraps from my injury, I keep saving them. Each time the doc trades them out I am bringing them home, have a use for them now hehehe. Like the old ace bandage wraps, Might work, its breathable. heheheh.
I have watched this a couple of more times this morning while waking up, The mood of this project is just so fun. You did a great job on this video my friend. Keep up the fun videos, can't wait to see what you come up with next.
Have a blessed week my friend.
Dale
Kramer Ammons if all goes well I think I’m 6 weeks out before the cast comes off then start physical therapy. So keeping my fingers crossed all goes well. It won’t ever be 109% but as long as I can shoot. I will be most happy. I have no doubt even if I have to learn how to shoot left handed with a mechanical release I will he building bows and shooting by summer.
When you said tie, I was thinking railroad tie. Mind blown.
Kramer, if you want a really strong joint with glue, esp PVA, first mix 50% water and glue, let that soak into the wood grain and pores, then when dry, use 100% PVA and you find that the glue will adhere to the glue that has rooted into the wood, AKA, a stronger bond than the wood itself. This works on any porous surface and will never fail as long as the glue can be watered down
Also, with soft woods, can laminating them help with their inherent weaknesses ? maybe 4 thin layers ?
Really enjoy the things you do! I would like to see you make bows with the materials and tools from 2000 BCE. "Help my tribe needs a better weapon than throwing stones and sharpened branches"???
Will it bow is a great idea
Do you water down the wood glue? Usually the titebond III that I find is much thicker.
Maybe the fast forward made it look less thick or the amount he used maybe
This wood is called sweet gum my buddy makes pallets and they use sweet gums as a hardwood. But it’s very soft
Hey dude, I have a request, and maybe you have already done something similar and I just haven't found it yet, but think you could do one using lumber from the woods and something easily obtainable like rope/cord? Like a post-apocalyptic bow making scenario. Just a suggestion, would love to see something like that.
i literally just today started making my first bow out of old oak pallet would and now i wish id seen this before i started
Cool beans!
Bamboo flooring. Will it bow?
If you need some I can send you some.
I made one of this
Make it with - Scrap - doorframe and Nylon belt that we use with our pants... :)
Man I really like your video's ,your a Good Man ,Thanks
How about one out of a coffee table? Great show.
First thought when he starts "wow, where do you get oak pallets? who uses oak for that?"
14:24 - "yeah, didn't think people were making pallets out of oak..."
A majority of pallets are actually made out of oak and pine. I even found some nice walnut and poplar in a few.
@@noki128 Pine and poplar I'd expect. Those are generally cheap soft woods. Never seen an oak pallet. With the price/board ft for walnut, I can't imagine someone using it for a pallet, though I guess every tree has it's scraps after cutting.
I was watching you draw knife sail threw that oak wood. All l could think was "That's a sharp draw knife!!!" I was waiting for some tear out for sure. Maybe spruce? It darkens up like oak especially black spruce.
Get pallets from a metal shop that gets in very heavy metal. Some of their pallets are oak, some of the boards are around 8-10 foot long and are 5 quarter.
Love the video and the concept!
Hi Greg! Please give this guy a shout-out in a vid. I've been subbed for a while and his content is great. He deserves way more publicity, this kind of stuff is great for the sport.
I’d love to see you make some arrows!
Hey Kramer try backing one with Jute twine from the hobby section at a craft store or walmart. Glue it to the back running tip to tip. I did a hickory pyrimid style bow this way. I used tight bond three to glue it down then used some camo paint on the jute. It finished out at 70lbs at 29" draw. I was shooting for a good bow for Elk hunting. It is a very smooth and quiet shooting bow. I will definantly be backing more bows this way and it looks realy cool.
Next thing is make a bow out of construction grade pine 2X4 that everybody can find easily, and I want to see you making a flight bow and arrows, great video keep it up
Pine is way too soft to make a decent bow.
@@ericmorrell806 so is a pallet but the natives made bows from everything including willow
Beautiful job
! !!
Genial me diste una muy buena idea para my primer arco gracias desde México
As a note, most of the pallets I worked with when I was working in a warehouse were almost certainly pine - they had that distinctive smell every time they cracked, which was often. Makes sense, because pine is much cheaper than hardwoods like oak, and cost is the primary concern when they're making pallets.
@@flyingfish7072 Certainly. Although, we did deal with some pretty heavy appliances - getting them on and off the pallets without breaking anything was a challenge.
Hah! And I repeat, HAH! I wore a dress shirt and tie to the office for 45 years. Now that I am retired I have a 45 year collection of ties and absolutely no desire to wear any of them. I now have a project to last the rest of my life. :-)
when building from pallet wood, look for dark colored pallets... I have found pallets made of Brazilian rosewood and teak before.... Coffee pallets are made from local woods... in Columbia
thank you so much for such amaazing moments.
hey, like your channel. what i'd like to see is a wooden bow with pvc backing with a recurve (recurve optional)
A lot of pallets are made from ash, but that definitely looks like some type of pine.
Will it bow fire blanket? They're made of a fairly fine weave fiberglass so I imagine it would be a good backing material
wow, very neat workshop
I think it's a good bow, and it is already bowing.
Yo man excellent job on your channels production. I wanted to get your opinion, ive made some natural stave bows from random sapplings over the years and my GF wants to build a bow along with the reflex deflex limb that I had found and is now seasoned. Im not concerned for me but for her would you think a 25lb draw is what I should go with for hers? Shes not weak but I dont want her fighting for form..
Cool , I've got it made .
I work at a hardwood pallet plant
You were really good in Breaking Bad .
That's a posh pallet made of oak 👌
It appears i got here late but im subbed and im glad i discovered your channel
Never heard of you before I got this video suggested and I subscribed immediately. Great style, great stuff!
As you’re asking for ideas: as soon as I started watching, I was certain that you should do a collaboration with Alec Steele. I think you’re sharing a common kind of energy and it would be an insane episode of will it bow? (Now, as I‘m thinking about the name, maybe his colleague Will, might be an even better fit! ;D)
Love your channel, I’m hooked. Will you make a long bow out of cedar?? I can’t wait to try making one myself.
lol again got to respect this guys love for his hobby
Drier than a Camel's fart.
Drier than an Arab's sandshoe.
Drier than a dead Dingo's donger.
Is that enough inspiration?
My new favorite channel.
“Drier than….something really dry” 😂
Will try to do a pallet wood bow, since i have a lot of pallets at work. Will do it just for fun. But won't use a tie 😁, will be using that fiber tape you shown in one of your videos. Lets see how it goes...
How about a truck Leaf Spring I would be Curious if it would bow love the channel keep up the great work
Looks like a pine pallet to me but what do I know I just drove a big truck for over 40 years and probably handled several million of them.
Pallets are generally pine or poplar.
When it comes to 'dryness ' ... you could use the Australian slang phrase "as dry as a dead dingos donga " .... ( A donga is a makeshift Bush shelter... usually a shallow trench beneath a fallen tree or overhanging rock, assisted by intertwined tree branches to help keep bad weather out.)...
And please try to make a bow from some Australian timber... some Ironbark, Rainbow Eucalyptus or Ti (tee) tree would be good .... although 'Turpentine Tree' would be my preference... ( they made the pileings for the docks in London out of that ).
Yes ... I'm an Aussie.
Lol
Pallets are made out of red oak planks on the outside and the thicker struts on the outside are pine but the middle strut is oak.
excellent work. How about a bow made from the timber slats used as spring mattress base in Ikea and similar beds?
Make a recurve out of a leaf spring.
I suggest u making a crossbow or bowgun. Also making bows out of pvc pipes.
Kramer,
Love your channel, energy, and attitude! Thank you for making , building and teaching! I've liked and subscribed!
I've also got a challenge for you & your "will it bow" theme. Palm fronds from royal palms. can they be made into limbs? They are similar to bamboo & rattan as they are grasses and have a considerable amount of flexibility as they are (when green ) whipped all over heck whenever the wind blows. Perhaps they could be dried, shaped, possibly even laminated up or bamboo backed? (maybe that could be a cool re-purpose of one of those used bamboo Tiki torch holders that always seem to end up sticking out of somebody's bulk trash pile ! ...eh?) :)
The oak or ash of a pallet are the larger structural pieces & poplar for the flat pieces.
make a bow from grass/wicker/hemp rope, use glue or resin to bind it all together and create strength. Could end up being a really cool twisted/braided look
without a backing I learned that the back is 1 layer of the same grouth ring ,thanks BM
ps, im gonna cut us some hickory this spring off the off grid cabin place, i will mail you a piece later on in the year. The love note from your wife on the chalk board is sweet.. I like her.
Kramer Ammons amen to that. We both have been blessed. Mine is a dream as well. ;)
Noticed you used titebond 3 for the finger joint and titebond 2 for the backing? Is there a rule of thumb for when to use one vs the other? Both are water resistant.
Looks like southern yellow pine to me!
loving your channel ! I have always wanted to make my own bow. one little criticism the music to too loud . maybe you could try and make a bow out of PVC pipe ?
Karen Murray, several people have mentioned pvc pipe & I agree. He could probably make an awesome bow out of it!
Can you make a bow out of cardboard and packing string? Will it bow? Nice vid, very entertaining... good luck!
