Nate I am a 57 yr old grandmother and have always wanted to learn to play guitar.I just got my 1st for Christmas this year.Thankyou so much for providing these free lessons to someone like me on a tight income
Strumming with my thumb and index finger came naturally to me from day one. A pick never felt right for me. I use a pick when playing lead guitar fills only.
I am playing for about 7 months and you are the first person that actually learned me how to hold the pick and strum . Holding the pick natural with an angle as you said HELPED me allot . My pick is NOW not slipping thank you !!!!
Nate: I'm 71 and have small hands. Learning the Guitar is my newest passion and you are Brilliant at teaching these basic yet very important skills. Thank you so much!
I just wanted to thank you so, so much for sharing with us in a way that is so comfortable. I’m a gramma that has wanted to learn just the basics for years but never felt comfortable with the instructions until I came upon your site. It’s not because you aren’t charging. It’s because you are gentle and not rushing us through. I’ve started and stopped several times being so disappointed in myself for not being able to keep up. I don’t feel that way now and I thank you for that. Truly I do…
Make sure you are counting the beat and understanding what you are doing and then what beats are being accented as that's AMAZINGLY important! Kick-ass bro! Guitar is my therapy and I always do my best to pay it forward to people who are just learning as I've been playing for 30 years now. It's funny because in my mind I'm only 25 years old...lol...any questions let me know...:)
Thanks for this video. My main problem is strumming & strumming patterns and really struggles to get good sound out when i use pick. I really need someones's help getting over these flaws.
You are a very good teacher. I know nothing about Guitar other than that I can identify a Guitar by seeing it. And I have gone through your first six lessons in one go. Have my son's guitar lying in his room for last three years unused. I am going to take it out today and try my hands at it. Thank you.
If I mute the strings while practicing strumming, I can't hear which strings I hit vs. which strings I avoided. So if I'm not holding down a chord, I just let the open strings ring and try to listen to which of the 6 notes sounded properly based on which strings I was trying to include. I hope that sounds like a proper strategy.
Thanks for posting these videos. Been in a bad depression for a long time. I usually draw, paint, sculpt, sing… but not so much anymore. I have a desire to create art but can’t do it. I decided maybe to get back into geetar and it’s been so nice to get back into something and enjoying myself. Thank you for your help!
I really appreciate your videos. They've already corrected bad habits and cleared-up thing I didn't understand. Out of all the videos and websites and books I've utilized, yours is the best :]
thanks for showing me how to play the guitar. It was so simple and I didn't even relize and I can already do a d note and a g note. Thanks so much you have helped me a lot in short simple videos and you are helping me out a lot. THANK YOU SO MUCH !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:)
You'll learn over time. Most of the time it comes down to the feel of what you're playing. A lot of the time you'll be using the constant strumming technique, which will dictate whether you use an upstroke or a downstroke.
It also depends on what is being accented in the measure. Most songs you will be strumming an 1/8th note rhythm (1 + = down down), which is about 90% of songs. Once you get that down the 1/4 & 1/16 note rhythms are the same hand motion. IMHO, strumming is THE most important thing a guitarist can possibly learn. You'll get it...just keep asking questions until you don't need to ask questions. Good luck! :)
When I strum down, I am not able to hit the string no. 1. What should I do to avoid this? PS: Your guitar lessons are great. Thank you so much for helping us beginners. 😊
Nice lesson, with emphasis on relaxing and what works for the individual Some guitar teachers are all about regimentation and Dos and Don'ts, which could be discouraging for beginners.
You can use your thumb to mute the 6th (largest) string. When you grip the guitar neck with your left hand, you'll notice that your thumb is already next to the 6th string. Simply rest it on the edge of the string to mute it.
When I strum,my wrist & sometimes my fingers come in contact with the strings & thus the sound doesn't get produced smoothly. How can I avoid this mistake?
I grew up holding my pick kind of like a pen because it was comfortable, but when I finally switched to the proper grip it was night and day in terms of tone and ability to play tight with the beat. Let me just issue this as a warning not to set bad habits out of comfort. The correct grip is the first one he shows, where the fingers are curled and locked behind the thumb.
Hey Nate, Thank you for putting these guides together. One thing I was wondering is how it should feel when strumming. I always feel like there is a ton of resistance when I hit the strings but when I watch you it almost seems like you're not even touching them. Am I hitting too close to the strings and not letting them flow well and are there any tips to getting a better feeling when strumming? Thanks again!
Hey Jeremy, If you feel like there is a lot of resistance when strumming you might wan to make sure that you aren't digging too much of the pick into the strings. Just dig enough of the tip of the pick into the strings to get the appropriate amount of volume out of the strings. You might also want to mess with different pick thicknesses.
well the angle is kinda important while you're strumming, especially since many times you're strumming by holding a pick with your index and thumb while you're picking the strings with the rest of your fingers. can't really do that if you're not holding the pick right (using 3 fingers to hold a pick is a waste of a finger)
you can get the same warm sound from a pick it’s just about technique. pick is always better in my opinion because it’s brighter and projects more. changes everything
Never understood when you stum up not hitting all the strings or when to not stum up on all the strings or the idea of strumming up in general and how your kinda playing the not backwards in a since theres alot of questions i have about how strumming works any tips would be helpful

I was strumming about as stiff as the queens guards until I watched this video. The feather analogy helps. Thank you.
I don’t know about anyone else but I think it sounds better when you use your finger and thumb. I would say it’s a richer and warmer sound.
Definitely warmer. I use this method sometimes in the studio when I need a warmer or more earthy sound. :)
