Started learning guitar a couple of weeks ago off another site and just this info of angling the pick slightly has really improved my strumming!. Such a small change but big results. And something that was completely overlooked by them!!. Thanks!
Justin, you are absolutely the best. I've been playing acoustic for decades and electric for a few years and have had "professional" lessons in both instruments and no one - NO one has ever told me some of the fundamentals of picking you explained so eloquently and clearly in this video. THANK YOU FOR ALL YOU DO!!
I've been lerning guitar since January. In Feb, I turned a corner, when I found Marty and did half of his beginner lessons. (Still love lessons 9 and 10) My friend has been after me to check your channel. He was right. Overnight, my strumming is so much better and so much faster, even as I go through my chord changes!! He's going to be thrilled when I take the guitar down to the creek, this afternoon, to show him what I learned in 24 hours since seeing him. You guys are just terrific!
I'm trying to teach myself during quarantine and your tutorials are by far my favorite. When I'm confused about a technique I always look if you have a video on it. You are a true life saver and thanks to you my learning experience is a lot more successful and fun. Thank you so much Justin!
Justin, As a beginner I find your videos one of the best. You seem to better understand the problems of a beginner than most other RUclips guitar teachers. Many thanks 👍🏻👍🏻
Who would have thought that bending your knuckle 20-30 degrees would be vital in strumming so well? I have been trying to work this out for so long with no progress. And here’s the man with ALL of the answers to your technique problems to save me wasting any more valuable time. As I type this, I’m sat on the posture correcting cushion that Justins wife recommended a while ago, saving my back from aching. Thank you again! You’re approach to life is inspiring
Hi Justin. I practice for about 4 month now and I never succeeded to slide my pick over the strings with the upstum. This explanation about 20 or 30 degrees turning was a big eye opener. Thank you so much.greeting from the Netherlands 🇳🇱
You are a legend! I started practicing a few weeks ago and I started strumming without a pick because with a pick I would find it impossible to strum up. So thank you :)
Such good advice. This was exactly my journey. I couldn’t use a pick at first. Started with a really thin pick, and gradually moved to a thicker pick. Justin started me on my guitar journey, and I always come back to him. Thank you Justin. X
I’ve been asking all of my friends who play guitar with help on my strumming, and nobody had any advice except keep practicing. Feel like the pick is always getting stuck and then my strumming sounds clanky and bounces off the strings. I will give this a try!
REQUEST! Could you do a series of videos on intermediate to advanced strumming and picking. Like when strumming how efficient do you want to be on the strum arc, should you be trying to keep it as close to both e-strings as possible or are there reasons to strum a bigger arc? Then I think they are called "Rest Strokes" how and when to use and not to use?
Hi Justin, I stumbled onto your channel today and a total beginner. Just started a week ago. The way you have explained the strumming sounds so logical. None of the other teachers on YT was telling this. The idea of how to rest your strumming shoulder and only moving the arm W/o twisting the wrist. And then angling the pick. It’s way past midnight. Gonna try this tomorrow. Thank you so much !!
Thanks for this video, I’ve been seeing so many “strum from the wrist” videos and as a beginner it is really tricky to do and trying to learn it started to slow down my progress with learning chords and overall enjoyment… I will now return to my current way of strumming more from the elbow as shown in this video and let it evolve naturally over time. Thanks again!
You just touched on the most important tip when learning to play guitar. There is no wrong way to play only the quality of playing matters. I focused way too much on technique and when i got frustrated and started doing it my way i made my biggest leaps forward.
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE do a video on post forearm strumming and how to loosen up the wrist and get to wrist strumming technique!!! Some of us can't progress from "chopping wood" ;-( Thanks!
I spent years practicing guitar on and off since i found strumming so uncomfortable and difficult with a pick so i would destroy my nails instead, this one little tip made a huge difference so thank you so much
I put a piece of painter's tape on wide end of the pick just to give it some friction for my fingers. I had difficulty keeping it loose and in correct angle, had to keep correcting my hold of the pick all the time. That bit of friction helped me a lot.
Thank you, as someone who wants to be able play music I enjoy and doesn't have money for expensive guitar lessons, these kinds of resources enable me to enjoy this wonderful hobby so much more!
Thank you...I was trying to figure out why the pick was moving so much in my fingers and it was because I didn't have it at an angle and was holding it lightly. Once I turned it at an angle that problem was solved. Much appreciated!
For someone that has been stuck in the "cowboy chords" for along while. I've been working on my barre chords and really enjoying the variations on E and on D. I've been practicing that C,G,A strum in an earlier video and I'm 66 years old :)
Something that helped me was buying an assortment of Dunlop picks. I was able to find a few sizes that seem more natural to me. Thanks for this video! It helped!
Great advice, this made a big difference to my strumming which I was aware wasn't good but wasn't sure why. This lesson has really helped me to get onto the right track, and it sounds and feels soooo much better. Thanks Justin. Top Man.
Great tutorial, it really helped me the explanation of literally where to place the forearm in the eletric guitar. Been struggling on how to use the pick but after watching this ive noticed I cant even position myself with the guitar correctly
Thanks Much Justin!! The slight angle if the pick advice is very good and helps me play smoothly!! But when play rhythm and lead shud I be changing the angle of the pick so that the lead sounds nice and strong... if i don’t change the angle... the lead or solo sounds feeble... please suggest🙏👍👏👏
The bit with the pick being at an angle... Watched about 10 or 15 videos on how to keep the pick from flying out of my hand and this is the first that mentioned that crucial bit.
This has been a revelation! The angle in my thumb has made all the difference. Many years ago I took private lessons and never had this explained to me and never like my strumming sound. Thanks, so much!
LOL I realized my action is high after holding the neck like you do, very close to body and it still sounds😂 Anywau, my guitar souns way good now after tilted the pick like you taught!! Thanks!!
Can you do some of this stuff for advanced and middle level players? There is always more to learn and better ways to play to sound better. That never ends. So can you show us how to get that last little bit for professional sounding strumming totally smooth chord changes? I need that last little improvement.
I would like to learn classic guitar. I rest the guitar on my left knee with my foot on a block. I found it is more comfortable. Also I would prefer to learn without a pick. Justin is an excellent teacher. Not sure how to proceed
Very helpful, thanks. I just bought my electric guitar two days ago and began some strumming. I feel there must be some tricks to make it sound better and now I found what I am looking for. :)
Justin: you hold the pick like I used to which is ok for strumming and using a light pick but having less pick sticking out is actually the method most teachers recommend. This involves having a tighter grip on the pick with less flexibility and only having the tip sticking out. The tone changes significantly using your method (clicky and trebley come to mind as adjectives). My advice is to try both methods and see which you like most
Justin your strumming technics would be a great add to your app. Allow users to have the 1&2&3&4 and circle like in your vids. Be great practice. I’m using a met. At present but the counting is a lot better.
This is exactly what I needed to get me over the ‘ffs, what am I doing wrong!’ stage I’m in at the moment. Obviously really. And who would have thought that a beginner holds on to something to tightly. 🙄
Hey Justin, I just want to thank you for your amazing work and how amazing it is the fact that you have a whole free course for thoso who don’t have the condition to actually pay for it. I’ve been using your app for less than a month and feels wonderful being able to play so many songs already. I really appreciate your effort. I always thought I didn’t have the “gift” for playing, but since I met your channel I feel so confident and good about myself and for being able to learn so much and so fast. Justin, not sure if I should buy you a beer or the whole dam pub! Thank you... changing the angle on the pic every so slightly changed the way my strumming sounds for the better! Thank You!

Why we should not have hand position in electric guitar like acoustic (the join resting instead of forearm)? Any disadvantages? Also please do tutorial on speed picking on electric guitar and right hand position (how you can position if it is a small hand). Thank you
I like the pick angle lesson -- thanks. But I have some concerns about using the forearm primarily to strum rather than the wrist. You say it's something for beginners, but to my way of thinking it's starting out with a bad habit because it's impossible to get speed and accuracy and control moving your arm vs your wrist. Why not start out from the beginning with the proper technique, rather than starting out strumming with the arm only to later have to switch to a finer, more controlled wrist movement?
krvnjrcbs well, all what u said is true and I am doing so, I m playing standing up at all times. Lead playing is not hard to rythym. Strumming position are tricky and I was looking for tips for that
Sir, changing the angle by little bit makes a lot of difference, it actually sounds better and feels more smoother. But when I strum upwards it gets little weird...Is it normal?.... It kinda feels pick getting stuck while we are strumming upwards. And sir I'm really thankful that you have provided such an awesome content for us beginners. Thank you so much for your videos! I absolutely love them! I feel like having the pick angled slightly down makes upstrums harder, do you have suggestions on adjusting that? I think I angle my wrist to correct for that which I am not supposed to do!
Hey am a beginner, and I noticed that too. So I switched to a very thin (.46mm) pick, and relaxed my index finger more when strumming up. Also strumming up with a little more speed does seem to make it sound smoother.. anyways, this did helped me. I hope you find it helpful too.
I'm not a beginner, I play acoustic with a flat pick and do hybrid picking. But I find fast strumming with a pick very difficult. For example, the fast strumming on Pinball Wizard. Arrgghhhh.... I'm a wrist flipping strummer, and without a pick I can easily play it, at full speed, in a relaxed manner. But holding onto the pick, at that speed, and for such long periods of time is really hard for me. I am getting better, but I've been working on that specific strum (on and off) for years. I try to relax, I do relax, but that makes holding onto the pick difficult. And yes, I've improved, but not enough. Suggestions?
you don't hold the neck at all, you grip it as needed as lightly as possible while getting clear notes every time. your thumb supports your fingers on the back of the neck or on the top of the freboard sometimes. whatever is comfortable for you when you're making chord shapes. your thumb moves dynamically to best support whatever you're doing with your fingers. your strumming arm should be in a place that keeps the neck stable for you to play
also, your fretting arm should be relaxed and pivoting dynamically to help your fingers fret notes. but the neck is supported by your strumming arm, your leg and your body. tuck it in so it only moves when you want it to.
I never think of pick angle or grip.. hold which makes comfortable.. every hand and finger are different.. i found out i hold slihy angle may be 5% .. 30% its scratchy.. and some time i upward angle or downward angle
What I noticed is that when I'm playing I either I have to wear a short sleeve shirt or roll my sleeve up so that my hand can "grip" the body. Is that a normal thing? I've never heard anyone mention that the clothes you wear matter. What I started doing to pick notes is to use my pinky to stabilize my hand so it doesn't slide around. It sounds like this is a bad habit to get into. Should I abandon that technique altogether and relearn from scratch, or is there a time and place where you want to use your pinky like that? Now that I'm more aware of it, I never really see other guitar players doing that. thanks
But is it good recommendation for beginners to start with thin pick? It's forgiving but isn't it what we want to avoid to hold pick tightly? I think if you start with thicker pick you're aware of it from the start... My neighbour has been playing guitar for 20 years and most like the campfire style you know and he used thin pick all the time and when I gave him thicker pick, he had that heavier grip so he couldn't play with it at all.
Thank you. Hey Justin, I see that the pick is angled forward a bit when strumming to avoid jerky strumming. Is it okay to angle the pick backwards as well?
I've been playing for 20 years with bad technique and really hindering significant improvement.....I am starting the journey of un-learning bad habits and learning good habits as basically a beginner
Started learning guitar a couple of weeks ago off another site and just this info of angling the pick slightly has really improved my strumming!. Such a small change but big results. And something that was completely overlooked by them!!. Thanks!

also, your fretting arm should be relaxed and pivoting dynamically to help your fingers fret notes. but the neck is supported by your strumming arm, your leg and your body. tuck it in so it only moves when you want it to.
Now that I'm more aware of it, I never really see other guitar players doing that. thanks
Hi Justin can you put a video for right hand position for finger picking
But is it good recommendation for beginners to start with thin pick? It's forgiving but isn't it what we want to avoid to hold pick tightly? I think if you start with thicker pick you're aware of it from the start... My neighbour has been playing guitar for 20 years and most like the campfire style you know and he used thin pick all the time and when I gave him thicker pick, he had that heavier grip so he couldn't play with it at all.
Thank you. Hey Justin, I see that the pick is angled forward a bit when strumming to avoid jerky strumming. Is it okay to angle the pick backwards as well?
Thank you, Justin!
As a beginner, should I use a pick? I've been using my thumb lol
I recommend you use a pick to get used to it! You might need it later on in your guitar journey. Start with a very thin pick :)
It works! thanks. 😀😀
Thanks it helps me a lot
I've been playing for 20 years with bad technique and really hindering significant improvement.....I am starting the journey of un-learning bad habits and learning good habits as basically a beginner
What’s the trick for the up strums? I got the downs easy but the ups are tricky for me!
Hello
Great video!
At 3:20 you mention the angle and make a downstroke. Does the angle need to be changed and/or reversed for an upstroke?
