  • It actually works, albeit with a bit of fussing.
    You can find these on eBay by just searching "IDE SATA".

      I have a similar problem. I have an old 3.5 IDE HDD but when i put the jumper to MASTER, it start the operating system from the old IDE HDD ignoring the SATA HDD where the operating system is installed. If i set the IDE HDD on slave, the pc doesn't find in any way the IDE HDD not even in the BIOS. I tried to set BIOS to not boot the operating system from the IDE HDD when is set to MASTER but the HDD ignore this command. How i can resolve this problem?

    It's pretty ingenious that these work both ways. Also you got lucky with the accessories included, I bought similar one in the past and don't remember getting the Molex to Floppy adapter.
    As for solder quality, they have an actual person hand-soldering these $2 widgets (probably less than $1 with shipping subtracted), can you really be surprised they don't do a stellar job on each.

    One important thing is obviously lacking in the video: Show how it can be connected either to an IDE or, the opposite, to a SATA drive. Which SATA connector to connect on both situations. Another detail is how to power either the device or the disks. When I bought it, I thought the two SATA connectors where power and data, then you could power up an IDE drive from the convertor. I was completely wrong. You need to power the disk from another source and the SATA connectors are both data. It could be a simple and elegant implementation but it is what it is.
    Thanks for the video anyway !

    This video reminds me of the annoyance that was Western Digital drives back in the day. For whatever reason, every IDE WD drive I had would fail in a very specific way. The Master/Slave/Cable Select jumper would be set, and then after a certain amount of time (weeks/months/years) the jumper that it was on would stop working. If it was a master, I'd have to put it on cable select, and make sure it was in the right spot on the ribbon, or if it was on cable select I'd have to make it master or slave. It was the weirdest thing, and it only happened with Western Digital drives.

    The "instructions" (which are just the markings on the board) are ambiguous at best. It's very confusing and hard to tell which connectors are required for which direction. If you don't use it often, you'll probably have to try each permutation every time you use it until it works. :-| I don't use mine at all, I just use different, separate cheap Chinese adapters for each combination of SATA, 3.5" IDEA, and 2.5" IDE.

      Then they would not play nice with each other, kinda like Trump and Hitler--each wants to be master and enslave the other. If you try to make them both Masters, their egos would get all offended, and they wouldn't speak to each other--or to you.
      Anyway, with master drives, as they keep saying on Highlander, "There can be only one". The others have to be slaves.
      On the other hand, if you're a feminist or are offended by the "Master - Slave" reference, you could call them the Mother and daughter drives; or "Father and Son" drives if you're a guy who is offended by all the feminist rhetoric. Whatever moniker you choose to give them, no matter how many you have, there can be only one "Mother", "Father", or "Master".
      Basically, that's the system that ensured that the earlier computers chose the correct drive every time instead of saying, "Hmm! This guy wants to access data from the hard drive--but there are two hard drives. Which hard drive should I choose? Should I just scan both until I find the data that the user is looking for? There's got to be a better way...."
      In the case of hard drives, it also told the computer which drive to boot to--which drive contained the operating system.
      That's just how it is in the cyberverse. There can be any number of Masters, just not on the same planet (computer).

      I get one of these and it present errors while booting the sata3 kingston 2.5 60gb ssd I have, but the ssd works fine in a regular sata, so I wonder the adapter doesnt read sata3 or if I got a defective one
      Also I didnt get at first this ide disk to sata port passthrough and tried to plug the ssd there and the connector to the motherboard, got a red led on adapter, dont know if it fried anything though

    Will this adapter work for SSD's? I want to clone my old Xbox harddrive to an SSD, and I think the IDE cable to the SSD requires an adapter. If I am wrong, please note I am willing to learn. Please advise. Thank you in advance

    Could you get this to work with a SATA SSD on a PATA motherboard? I have one of these and I can't even get the drive to show up in the BIOS.

    • @GeorgeWalker1
      @GeorgeWalker1 5 лет назад

      Same here. It seems like most people are buying the board to hook an older IDE drive to a SATA host, but I want to do the opposite. Both a SATA Hard Drive and SSD weren't detected by my IDE host no matter which direction I hooked up the cables. There is no way to set "master" on a SATA drive, either.

      @@GeorgeWalker1 I tried here, it detects the ssd sata3 disk on pata host but the disk shows tons of errors that dont present at a standard sata motherboard. I was hoping to find any clues on solving that

    Quite funny, the AMP-connector, refered to as being a "Molex" is not even manufactured by Molex - funny how we have been calling them Molex - i did all the way from the 90s where i started building custom PC's :) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Molex_connector

      It's even worse in the electronics industry; I see pretty much all plug and socket connectors referred to as "Molex style".

    How do I set the drive jumpers to master?

    • @Al_Swilling
      @Al_Swilling 6 лет назад

      Eight months later, Al replies:
      If you look on the back of the drive where the jumper pins and jumper sleeve are located, it will usually indicate Cable Select (CS), Master (MA), or Slave (SL) above the corresponding pair of jumper pins. Usually the jumper is set to Cable Select mode by default.
      On some IDE drives, removing the jumper sleeve completely puts the drive in Master mode. but in most cases, you will just need to remove the jumper sleeve from the CA pins and slide it onto the MA pins. You may have to use a hemostat or small needle-nose pliers to get a grip on the sleeve, but it will slide off easily.
      In some models, leaving the jumper sleeve off also changes the performance of the drive compared to using the jumper sleeve in MA position. In other words, using the jumper sleeve yields different features and sometimes different data transfer rates than not using the jumper sleeve.

      They have their advantages but PCIe controllers cost a lot more and aren't bidirectional.
