Personally I think Piccolo's new form was the right choice for his character, as a Namekian, his history is tied to Namek and the Dragon Balls. Through out Z, we see him gain power by accepting it from others, merging with Nails, and then merging with his other side, Kami. This was how a Namekian grows and gets stronger. So using the Dragon Balls, something intrinsic to the Namekian people to grant him more power is in line with how Namekians are. Their strength comes from bestowing it onto others.
I kind of like that honestly, in a world of raging=new forms, a form granted through wishes is refreshing honestly... can't say the same for Beast Gohan though lol.

That’s an interesting take that I wish I had considered before. I mean, I liked the transformation in the movie because Super manga had been dropping lore about the dragonballs being rewards for noble Namekian warriors previously, but to see it as a natural extension of Namekian strength being gained due to selflessness and sacrifice makes it even richer. If you think about it, Piccolo had to endure a lot to be deemed worthy of it. He had to swallow his pride and offer help where he could to others. By being the “joke” who was relegated to the sides as a teacher to the other stronger fighters, and accepting that role rather than resenting it, Piccolo becomes a giver who offers himself for the greater good. He becomes what Nail and Kami were to him, and because he’s a warrior willing to sacrifice not just his life but also his image, he is rewarded by the dragon with great power.

@@edwardmyers9492 I'm just pointing out that Beast Gohan was just another rage=new form, I'm sorry if I offended you, I have bias for Piccolo as just like Toriyama, he is my favourite DBZ so I already analyse his character in depth to form an opinion of him. I don't dislike Beast Gohan mind you, I just dislike how he was utilised for the movie, I'm sure given more time and in depth research into Gohans character as I have for Piccolo, I can form a better opinion on Beast Gohan, but as it stands now I just see it as just another form with nothing particularly interesting to say. It's the same feeling I got with Future Trunk's form the anime that name escapes me right now.

@@edwardmyers9492 Thats exactly what Im saying, I need to re read the manga again and write down my thoughts If I want to give more in depth opinions on the other characters as I have for Piccolo, but he's not the only one that I do this for, Vegeta is my 2nd favourite character and I can say as much about him as I do for Piccolo. Too many people talk about the series without refreshing their memory about the series and its characters, I acknowledge that it was brash of me to say beast gohan has no substance, I believe there is something there I just need to look into it more. Thanks for giving your opinion and making me realize that comments that like that doesn't contribute to further discussion and dissection for character writing.

I've always thought this. I especially think it was Kami's influence on Piccolo that led to him forfeiting against Shin. Piccolo wasn't fumbled, he just evolved. He lost his reasons for the grudge, was forced to be an ally for so long he became a real one, then he went through two fusions including his better half - making it completely impossible to ever be the Piccolo we saw before again. He really isn't even Piccolo anymore, he's the 'nameless namekian, child of katas'.

It's more like, Goku wants to be the strongest and once he beats a strong opponent, he looks for a new challenge to overcome.
He doesn't "drop" Piccolo, he beats him in the tournament and then just kinda moves on. He doesn't fixate on Vegeta once he shows up, because he's stronger. If anything, Vegeta got replace with Frieza, then Cell, then Buu, then Beerus
People need to be more honest, Toriyama chose to replace Piccolo with Vegeta via screen-time because Vegeta was stronger and his character arc was not yet complete. That wasn't Goku's choice

    • @snipingsloth1053
      @snipingsloth1053 4 месяца назад +1

@@KSmanderes it was a conscious choice of the toriyama to not give other characters screen time when for example, piccolo was still actively in his own arc.
I say “drop” because rather than continuing to develop the unique abilities, arcs and struggles of all the characters over like 40 years of story, they tried roiding up tien, piccolo, roshi, krillin, gohan, etc etc etc with ass pull power ups that none of them have been working on to suddenly be back in the ball park. we haven’t had a single frame of any of them training for like 2 decades (and actually have explicitly been told most of them basically gave up as warriors after goku surpassed them which is one of the limpest element of the dragon ball story.)
Goku is the protagonist, I generally expect him to be stronger. Doesn’t mean every character he beats needs to fall to obscurity in the story by the next panel and be treated like they can’t also get stronger

But he never, ever dropped as low as Yamcha, a character so forgotten that he's just trotted out for the memes or Tien, a man who trains the whole of his life and his greatest post 22nd Tenka-Ichi Budoukai moment is nearly dying to Semi-Perfect Cell, all so that Krillin could piss it all away because he didn't want to keep it in his pants.

As post nail and kami fusion his base potential was already above freiza meaning he should have been able to unlock orange and super piccolo much sooner as original pre kami split was a being that powerful
The wish was fine. It was a great scene that was the original namakian lore of a warrior getting all the dragon balls. Piccolo regained the power kami put into sheron and dende finally became the true guardian making shenron his dragon.

Hot take but I think sunsetting Goku is the way to go. Goku has no real aspirations outside of fight the next big bad. Vegeta has promise as a destroyer. Both could make cameos, but yeah. Lemme get to my point.
Piccolo and Gohan should take over, though mostly Piccolo for this idea as I haven’t thought of an arc for Gohan.
With Frieza’s return it gives Piccolo a second shot at facing what happened on Namek, what Frieza did. With Frieza’s new found power he goes around re-conquering the universe even quicker and more brutally than before. The arc follows Piccolo as he liberates planets and gains strength that’s bestowed upon him by those he helps and mentors along the way. Saiyans gain strength through taking and ‘violent’ themed methods. Namekians get it through more self-sacrificial and selfless methods with a theme on giving. With all this in mind, the emphasis could be less on the fighting and more so on a deep story deserving of Piccolo’s rich history and calm character. Then when the fights happen, it’s all out balls to the wall with all tension built toward unleashing in a crescendo of action. And the final confrontation ends with none other than Frieza himself.
But that’s just a massive wish. Piccolo is still my favorite character to this day. ❤

Too bad he doesn't have a movie to solidify his past. And they did get sloppy with his character development. But I feel the same for master roshi. So much untapped history.

Yeah not sure where the 17 hate came from. They went to pretty great lengths in the story to show that the android TWINS are essentially a perfect PAIR.
If we really get into the weeds, 18 has never shown any interesting techniques (usually copying krillin’s moveset of all things) whereas 17 makes brilliant use of his inherent abilities to create an energy barrier that can be maintained indefinitely.
18 legitimately just dogged a much weaker vegeta, kissed krillin’s cheek, and got gobbled. 17 was out there putting in the work

Ok so unfortunately piccolo arrived at namek as a earth born Namekian with no exposure to even his race besides is (ex) nemesis, Kami whom he never cared much for ever so far.

Piccolo does have a transformation. He’s able to become a giant. I was actually hoping back in the Namek saga, after he said that he was confident in his speed that he was going to transform. That coupled with his training and meditation, I thought he had been working on his speed and sensory skills to make up for what he may be lacking in after he transforms and becomes larger and stronger by default. Therefore making himself well-rounded and harder to fight while being able to concentrate on other compensatory skills in his training.

I love Piccolo, he's honestly the best character but the fact that he's so smart and serious is the reason it's hard to keep him at a high power level because he's the type of guy that would solve the problems immediately if he could. He's not going to let the enemies get stronger just for a good fight or fuck around. He still gets some really damn good lines tho, even if he's not at Gohan or Vegito levels and he can't face Cell or Buu he still plays a role outside fighting and that's better than plenty characters manage to. Glad he got the orange form tho.

Some development on Piccolo's fight avoidance in the Super Buu section of the arc. He was in possession of the Dragon Radar that entire time. He was simply Showing the maturity to prioritize the safety of the Dragon radar over his pride as a fighter during the Gotenks Battle. If the Dragon Radar got destroyed while fighting, then chances are Years would pass before finding the dragonballs, and Shenron can't revive someone if they had died over a year. All of Earths population would have been permanently cooked.

Not just Piccolo that has turned into a loony toons show but the whole series.
Think of a storyline that really shows how characters fear for their lives and are really hurt and the viewers worry for them, and that same series has a lot of comedy gag moments in it as well. There’s actually quite a few like it (or at least there were many like that).
DBS is not one of those series. Closest it can get is being a similar series but without any tension.

  • @shmikex
    @shmikex 4 месяца назад +1

What we saw throughout DB and into DBZ is how bad can a person be who eventually makes a change to good.
Yamcha, a simple desert bandit, was the beginning.
Tien, an assassin in training, was the next step.
Piccolo, when viewed as a reincarnation of Demon King Piccolo, added complexity, but once he was good, he was good. Heck when the Saiyans arrive there is no uneasy alliance, no "we better watch out for Piccolo". At that point, he was a good guy, further cemented when he fused with Nail and Kami.
And lastly we have Vegeta. Vegeta was this trope of a bad guy gone good in its final form. There wasn't a "time passes, and he's good" moment like there was with Piccolo. Vegeta is a dick all throughout DBZ, even when he was an ally (not a good guy bear mind you). Even establishing some level of bonds between Vegeta and the others (through Bulma and Trunks) wasn't enough to make him a "good guy". And even when he was assumed such, we find out he has some last flickerings of evil in him (Majin Vegeta) which by the end of the Buu arc, burns out completely and is eventually considered "pure" for the SSJ God ritual.
What's interesting is that Buu's journey is a simplification of Piccolo. Instead of the "Nameless Namekian"' ripping out his evil side (Demon King Piccolo) to want to do good (as Kami), Buu forces his evil side out to want to do evil. In the end both evil halves get reincarnated and even eventually those reincarnations as good absorb their original good halves. But Piccolo's journey is so much better than Buu's.

13:12 "Piccolo has spent more time with Gohan, than Goku himself."
Goku has spent way more time with Gohan both in and out of battle.
Piccolo spent 6 months watching Gohan survive on his own, and 6 months training Gohan. Spent time in battle with Gohan against Nappa, but Gohan was too scared to do anything until after Piccolo died. Then there was the 3 years training in prep for androids.... and that's it. Piccolo didn't spend any time with Gohan outside of this. Gohan had barely seen Piccolo in the 1-2 years between Namek and Frieza/Goku coming back to Earth. Oh, I guess Gohan spent a few days on the lookout leading up to the Cell Games, and Piccolo was there.
Goku raised Gohan for 4.5 years before Raditz showed up. Goku got to witness Gohan come in clutch against Vegeta. He got to witness Gohan making a stand against Ginyu in Goku's body (helping Goku to get his body back), and also could sense Gohan in battle against Frieza. Not to mention Goku relied on Gohan getting Piccolo and the others to the spaceship (not needed in the end after the wish, but Goku knew Gohan could be relied upon). They spent 3 years training for the androids and a further 9(?)months in the time chamber training for Cell.
Piccolo assumed Gohan was scared to fight Cell. He wasn't. Gohan just didn't see the point in senseless fighting and was trying to reason with Cell. Mastered SSJ Gohan wasn't that fased by Perfect Cell at this point, even put Cell on his butt easily. Goku believed in Gohan and knew he had it in him to defeat Cell (even before he went SSJ2).
And then when Gohan got injured thanks to Vegeta, Piccolo thought all was lost and that Cell was going to win. Goku from the aftelife knew Gohan was holding back. Goku told Gohan to stop holding back and the monent Gohan unleased his full power Super Perfect Cell was vapourised. While Piccolo was still thinking Gohan couldn't do it.

They only issue is when they don't power scale him. At the end of the Cell Saga, he was keeping up with SSVegeta. He trained leading up to Buu. Maybe he wasn't SS2 power levels but he was clearly stronger than both Goten and Trunks individually. Yeah he wasn't taking out Buu but they could have had some sort of delay fight to show he wasn't as disregarded as say Yamcha. Super just had awful scaling.

As much as I enjoy Piccolo fighting, he doesn’t need to in order to be great and respected. They all know he isn’t close to being weak, they just keep coming across absurdly stronger opponents. That’s the biggest problem with Dragon Ball, period. They listen to him because they know he has the strength, skill, experience, and knowledge worth respecting. His character still has possibilities to grow strength wise, but he is solidified as far as being respected by the Z Fighters.

I'll agree that Piccolo's fusion with Kame should've had much more of an impact on the series overall...the nameless namekian was said to be on par with a super saiyan without training after all and that shouldn't have been taken lightly and should've carried far more weight into the later Cell saga and beyond than it did...but where I do disagree with is android 17 being a weak opponent. Piccolo was only slightly stronger than 17 and imperfect Cell wanted no more smoke from Piccolo until he was absolutely sure he absorbed enough people to be stronger than him and nobody knew how powerful 16 was up until that point...also by that point in the saga Piccolo was literally the only one who could hang with these androids so his fight against 17 shouldn't be underestimated.

To be fair, all the best (and worst) characters are left behind in terms of power scaling and/or relevance to the story, Piccolo is just one good example. Gohan, Goten, Trunks and even Krillin have been mishandled, under utilised and generally kicked to the curb
