to connect with a wider audience I would call this bag Project Bag too because the knitting and crocheting communities use them for carrying their crafty projects. Thanks for sharing!
Got to try this. Your directions seem clear enough Even For Me To follow.... I am guessing we can actually Choose most of the Measurements to be the Size we would like to try and make our bag...
I enjoyed watching this video. The directions were clear, concise and easy to understand. The voice over, along with the visuals, made this a project easy to see how it all comes together and I want to try this. It would make a great gift for all the women in my life!
I liked the way the pieces were constructed and laid out in a horizontal fashion. I found this an easier method for me to understand how to create the bag, although sewing in the zipper may be tougher due to the thickness. Also, thanks for the hand sewing tip, I’ve never tried the zigzag technique.👍🏻
Great video, I made two bags using this video this afternoon and it was really easy to understand the instructions. It taught me how to do the lining easily and I've never done the flat bottom before, so thanks!
I just made one of these for myself. I used all cottons and backed all the pieces with feather weight interfacing. I'm tempted to make a few more as gifts for the women of my boyfriend's family.
Hi, this was very clear n concise. The only question I have is regarding THE ZIPPER 🤷♀️ I need detailed info to get the zips to lay/ not pucker in the corners 🤦♀️ this detail seems to be skipped on every video I research..😳 can someone help.. PLEASE!, ?
I really enjoyed this video and have made two makeup bags now. Just out of curiosity, what is the reason for applying the interfacing to the lining, rather than the main fabric? For bags I've made in the past, the interfacing was applied to the main fabric. Thank you!!
you can do either one. I did my lining because it was a thinner material than the fabric I used on the outside which was more like a canvas type fabric.
I made two bags using this tutorial, it was very easy to follow and my project turned out great! Thank you so much! I would just ask, what kind of fusible interacting did you use?
Hi Tova! A cool idea I thought of is if you were to make a video on doll clothes or even sewing in that With doll clothes, it's close to impossible to make things like a double welt pocket or a tailored suit jacket sleeve with the buttons or a mandarin collar. I'm in the process of making a Nehru jacket for my Alistair Wonderland doll and I'm ripping my hair out as my fabric gets reduced to thread. I know you have a list of things to do but if you could do this at some point in time, you would save me and the rest of the doll customizing community a ton of trouble.
I made it! First time sewing anything like this and first time with a zipper. I did goof up...one side isn’t pointed, it’s more rounded. I had trouble with the zipper when sewing along the edges. I even broke a needle. Do I sew up to the zipper and skip it? That’s the only confusion I had. Thank you for your informative video.
I really would like to know how you see on the zipper area... do you fold and push outward or inward? Does it get difficult sewing on it... it’s he point where the lining and the main fabric meets
Professor, I need help with a McCalls M7154 1930 gown with the shoulders connection for the over bodice needs to be sewn at shoulders with the under bodice. The problem is; I do not know how to do that with the raw edges- will be out or do I tuck in the raw edges at the over bodice? It is great to have experience Dressmakers but when we need help where do we go? Visual? thanks
if you go to our website, you can post a question under the tab "Ask a Question". This way you can post an image of the direction step that you're having trouble with. I will do my best to help you out.
I bought a couple different patterns to make a bag just like this but got so confused I never started. Now thatbibe found your video I have all my materials back out and excited to get started, you make it so easy...thank you!!! However, I do have one question. How would I adjust the measurements to make a larger bag of the same kind. I think I can figure most of it out (maybe) except the cutouts for the box bottom. Is there a ratio you use?
Don't worry, you can't really screw it up by making your own pattern and just experimenting. :) for the notches at the bottom, I just try and make them squares but I'm also taking into account seam allowance and how wide I want the bottom of the bag to be.
Love watching your video's. But do have a question if anyone can answer. What doe's it do when you cover the interfacing with a pressing cloth and spray with water. Have seen it done this way quite a bit just not sure why. Would love someone to explain why. Thank you
the damp cloth helps with transfering the heat because the glue on the interfacing needs to get really hot to melt but you don't want to apply the iron directly on the interfacing so the cloth also provides protection. Hope this helps :)
I like the construction of this bag. However, are the dimensions correct? The piecing of the outside of the bag makes it smaller than the lining. The outside height would be (4 1/4 less 1/4 seam) plus (3 5/8 less 1/4 seam) equaling 7 3/8 whilst the lining is 7 3/4. I'll look at he video again to see if I wrote down the wrong dimensions or there there is a reason for the difference?
Hi Katie, thanks for bringing this to my attention. I've gone over all the math and you are correct that the lining is slightly larger but I get that it should be 7 5/8" instead of 7 3/4" so it's off by 1/8". I've used this exact pattern four times now to make a makeup bag so the difference doesn't seem to be physically noticeable when the bag is complete, but, yes, if you want it perfect, you can change the lining dimension to 7 5/8". Thanks and I hope you love your new makeup bag. Please post a picture on our fb wall when you finish it :)
You are so right - I misread one of the measurements. 1/8 won't make a difference. I'm going to make your size and then enlarge it for project bags. Really like your construction steps. I think I will add a loop on the outside to hang onto or clip onto something else. :)
Christina Palomino i meant, the dimensions should always be the same as the lining fabric (if you’re planning to use one fabric for the outside fabric)
If you increase the sides and the length, it'll automatically change the cutouts. Just make a quick sample out of some cheap fabric and see if you like the results :)
if you use a directional fabric, you might want to cut the two sides separately instead of placing the pattern on the fold, otherwise one side will have the print upside down. The notch side is the bottom of the bag so keep this in mind when placing the pattern on your fabric.
If you are referring to the step where she places the zipper on the fabric to sew it together, the "right" side of the zipper always "faces" or "touches" the "right" side of the outer fabric. The side of the zipper with the pull tab is it's "right" side. The side of the fabric that you want on the outside of the finished bag is its "right" side. So the pull tab side of the zipper should touch the printed side of your outer fabric when sewing the first zipper seam on each side of the zipper .
Make sure that you "press" the fabric by laying the iron on it and pushing straight down into the ironing board. Do not slide the iron. Lift the iron and "press" the next section of fabric. Also make sure there is no stretch in the fabrics that you use for this project. If the tension on your sewing machine is not correct for your fabric, the seams may also be stretched out of place. Look up in your sewing machine manual how to adjust it if that is a problem. Try sewing a few seams on some scaps of the same material to check the tension before working on your actual project. I hope this helps.
Hello. I know this is an OLD video … but will make comment anyway (to take into consideration for future videos). Thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge with us who are inexperienced but wanting to learn. If you could please slow your speaking down just a bit, it is easier on us to follow along. In the beginning when you are showing us the supplies and measurements you are using a light colored background and then post the fabric type and how much, followed by the pattern pieces and their measurements - all this was shown in WHITE TEXT. Please give us a darker color to read if the background is also light in color. Thank you.
The pull tab and teeth should be face down on "right" side of the outer fabric when making your first seam on each side of the zipper. The "right" side is the side you want to be on the outside when you are finished.
to connect with a wider audience I would call this bag Project Bag too because the knitting and crocheting communities use them for carrying their crafty projects. Thanks for sharing!
This is an excellent design. I have made it several times and sold many makeup bags. Thanks for sharing!
Fabulous tutorial, thank you very much. Kim from Western Australia!

I just made two of these this afternoon! Easy pattern - excellent instructions. 10 out of 10!
yay! I'm so glad it worked out for you :)
I just made one of these for myself. I used all cottons and backed all the pieces with feather weight interfacing. I'm tempted to make a few more as gifts for the women of my boyfriend's family.
nice! they're perfect for gifts :D
Clever way to do a bag. You always choose fun fabric!
Great tutorial, clear verbal instructions along with the visuals, good job
I love the red bears!!! I think I may just try one of these bags... They look pretty sharp!

Personally I would top stitch at the zip as well to avoid fabric getting caught in the zip
I'm going to do this project as mothers day gifts for family
Awesome tutorial! So clear and easy to follow!
I'm gonna use this to make my makeup bag since I have some heavyweight fabric scraps from a dress and I wanna make something else out of it.
This is on my to do list. And I already know what fabric I want to use! 😁
Great tutorial, love the graphics with the fabric dimensions too!
Brilliant. ...Many Thanks for sharing this tutorial. ...also really like your manicure. ....
I made two bags using this tutorial, it was very easy to follow and my project turned out great! Thank you so much! I would just ask, what kind of fusible interacting did you use?
I just used a pellon lightweight fusible interfacing.
you make it look so simple. Great Video!!
I don’t have any interfacing, would it be possible to just make it without? Or too flimsy?

You can sew as close to the zipper as possible and skip over sewing the teeth. I would try it and see if it works better for you.
I really would like to know how you see on the zipper area... do you fold and push outward or inward? Does it get difficult sewing on it... it’s he point where the lining and the main fabric meets
I need to order some canvas. This is a great tutorial. Love your nails too :)
Loved it thanks! Loved the nails
Cute! I'd like to make one for myself. It doesn't look easy though.
Great bag! Thank you!
I was thinking of doing this. Thanks for sharing!
great tutorial and very cute bag! For non American audience, it would be really helpful if you could also include metric measurements on the video

Beautiful..

Fantastic. Thank you for the answer so quickly. This does make sense once I thought about it.

Love the video. Can you please include cm measurements so that those of us over the pond don't have to convert. Many thanks

What dimensions should my fabric be if I want to use only one color fabric on the outside?
Christina Palomino it should be the same as the lining fabric. :)
Christina Palomino i meant, the dimensions should always be the same as the lining fabric (if you’re planning to use one fabric for the outside fabric)
yes, this exactly :)
If I make this bag 1or 2 inches bigger all around should I adjust the cutouts any?
If you increase the sides and the length, it'll automatically change the cutouts. Just make a quick sample out of some cheap fabric and see if you like the results :)
Thank you 💜
Is there is a reason you can't put the stitching around the zip before putting it all together?
I was thinking the same thing. I think that's how I'd do it.
If you use fabric with design on it do you start with the design face down ?
if you use a directional fabric, you might want to cut the two sides separately instead of placing the pattern on the fold, otherwise one side will have the print upside down. The notch side is the bottom of the bag so keep this in mind when placing the pattern on your fabric.

What is the finished size? thank you in advance☺
do you have written turtorial? Thanks
currently, just the video. sorry
I’m not sure if this is just user error but my fabrics came out way too long too long wonky even after I checked the patterns twice :/

There's a speed option on the video. Press the settings gear and then change the playback speed to .75.
Nice superr💕💕💕
I would love to make this bag but I know I can't cut straight lines. I wish there was an available printable template. PLEASE add one.
Fulla Sugga use a ruler to draw the straight lines and then cut out. As long as youre pretty close, thpugh, it should be fine.
You can also try making a template using graph paper or my favorite wrapping paper. It has lines on the back of the paper.
Lady9tails why have I never thought of using the back of wrapping paper🤦🏻♀️
Try watching at .75x or you'll miss it.
Which way do you point your zipper teeth
The pull tab and teeth should be face down on "right" side of the outer fabric when making your first seam on each side of the zipper. The "right" side is the side you want to be on the outside when you are finished.
It would help if you slowed down or had written directions
Zipper length????

Was anyone else confused about the makeup bottom cut out?
you were too fast to follow the measurements and instructions.
Pause video for each step if you need too.
Were you in a hurry?
metric :(
this is so confusing!
You talk to fast
You are going too fast.
