Was watching another video and yours popped up next. I've sewn for 68 yrs and not used this method. The comments section is correct, you are very thorough and concise with instructions which is much appreciated. I will pop over to see how Amy does it as well. You're never too old to learn new things. I subscribed and can't wait to see more.
I am so happy to see a very long time sewist like me commenting! I have been sewing for 67 years myself and always appreciate new tips. (Sometimes I write "really" or "that is not a typo" after the number, as people do wonder." My life would be completely different without sewing, and my daughters are the same way.
I really like the two-sided tabs instead of the butler method and I prefer the top stitching so the lining doesn’t get caught in the zip. Thank you for showing us this method.
Totally agree about top stitching the lining. The lining WILL get caught in the zipper. Your work always looks so polished. Thank you for another great tutorial. Kay in Dallas, Texas
Thank you. This is pretty fabric too. I would recommend fusible interfacing to give the bag some more stability. I agree that it needs topstitching to secure the lining and de orate the bag a bit.
I am so impressed Christine that you are so careful to give credit to the creator of the method! Good for you! So many people today don't credit others. I really enjoy your videos. ~ Steph in Colton, NY ❤
Instead of multiply everything from inch to cm, I simply bought myself a measure tape with cm on one side and inch on the other. Now I can sew and print out whatever comes along and just don't bother anymore.. 😎 Best 3 bucks I spent last year 😏... Your Videos are really well made and especially helpful for beginners. Idk. It was by chance but to put the measurements the way that the RUclips logo wasn't covering them - (while pausing the video)- was a smart move👌👍
Wow, I learned such a lot from coming across this great video! I've sewn (mainly clothes) all my life. Love the attention to detail and can't wait to get started. Thank you so much Christine.
I love Amy Butler and this method is great! I also never used wash away double sided tape until I discovered your channel. Thank you for all the great tutorials and tips!
Hello Ms. Christine, This is my First time watching your video. Thank You for guiding us as how to do ZIPPER in this method. SOme of us realy needed a tuttorial like THIS ONE. Keep quiding all of us Please?!
Thank you, I appreciate your demonstration. I too like zipper tabs on both ends and also like to stitch the lining together with the outer fabric, but I do appreciate other sewing techniques also.
This is the best tutorial I've seen yet. I completely concur with your thoughts on the lining. I would worry that the lining would shift up into the zipper.
I watched. I learned. But I do not think I will use this technique with my bags. Nice to know the technique if I want to use it in garment making. You explained it well, I just like bilateral tabs and top stitching. I think it is a cleaner look as I box all my bags. Thank you very very very much for the great video. If I take up garment making I will be a step ahead.
OMG, I LOVE THIS.....I made a little purse and wasn't happy with it so took it apart, watching your video will help me so much when i put it all back together. Thank you so much
Thanks so much for this easy to follow tutorial for a Butler method of inserting a zip. You are so easy to listen to - clear, concise and consistent with your teaching. I have been sewing for more than fifty years (and that's a lot of zips!), but I have not heard of the Butler method. Thanks so much!
What an informative tutorial that you did an excellent job of teaching. Your pace of speech and speed of sewing was "just right"! Thank you for sharing :D
Wow, I have ever seen the butler method done like this, I like it. I always include my lining in my top stitch if not it seems to get caught in zipper. Thank so much Christine
You are an excellent instructor, and your directions are spot on. Thank you, I will definitely try this method, it is a very crisp option. I agree with you on the liner, I will likely top stitch the liner with the top when completing that step. Thank you again!!!!
I’m new to sewing zippers and I’m so grateful for this video. A week ago I gave up sewing zippers because I was doing so bad at it. I finally got one pouch finished and the zipper bulged. I sewed and resewed that pouch five times and every time it was messed up. So I gave up but seeing your video makes me want to try again and sew along. Thank you!
@@ChristinesHomeAffairs I just saw your reply. I wanted to let you know, I did it!!!! Your video helped so much! I’ve sewed three zippers now and out of the three, I only had to fix one. Thank you! You’re such a good teacher. I’ve been sewing along with your videos a lot lately and I find them the best for learning.
How interesting! I came upon you as a recommendation by RUclips and have subscribed. I am VERY impressed by the clarity of your instruction. I definitely topstitch both layers together to keep the lining from getting caught. I can understand that only doing the outside might look nicer to some, but to me it's not worth the risk.
I've seen bags at sales made this way, and always wondered how they did it! Thanks for the very informative video! And, I'm with you on the matter of top-stitching - I like that it comes out nice and neat with the top-stitching through all layers.
The tips to mark the 3/4" on the fabric and to leave the one side of zipper over the edge so the zipper head does not cause problems are most welcome. ( Zippers have gotten easier for me and now with your tips they will be easier still.) Also, the way you did the zipper tab makes so much sense and will avoid all the difficulty I've been having when I've tried to add side tabs.
I made my first pouch using this method. Took me some time to get it just right. But, success! I found the tape to be useful in lining up the edges but removed it and pinned the fabric instead. I found this easier as I think I had the wrong double sided tape and it was kind of stiff. I will be using this method, it is so clean with no bulky edges!! Thank you for teaching this in a video tutorial!
Just found your channel and I love it. You're really great at teaching. Your videos are easy to watch and the video itself is really done well. Thank you so much.
I would prefer to topstitch both the face fabric and the lining so that the lining won’t get caught in the zip slider. Thank you for a great video - from South Carolina USA.
I can see the benefit in the way Amy does the zipper when it's for a bag that needs a tight closure. The only thing i do differently is include the lining in the top stitch so it doesn't travel upwards with usage and get caught in the zipper. Thank you for the video. Good job with the explanation. I'm going to try the "no tab" style.
If you give your lining a good press and pull it down as you press, it will not ride up and get caught in the zipper. Steam pressing that lining will keep it in place. I prefer not sewing the lining down at the same time as sewing the outer portion. It makes a much nicer finish on either end of the bag when the lining is not sewn down with the outer fabric. The weight of the bag contents will keep the lining from getting caught in the zipper . Taking a slightly larger seam in the bottom of the lining will assure that there is not extra baggy fabric that can creep upward. I checked all the cosmetic and change bags that I have bought and none of the linings are sewn down. I have never had any lining get caught in the zipper. All that being said, that is the joy of sewing , you do what works for you . Lovely bag , lovely instructor.
thank you for sharing this. your stitching is impecabile. i've been making wet/dry bags for my family members with babies and i laminate the fabric, making it all the harder to stitch thru the bulk. this method of removing some of the zipper bulk is great! but i do think i'd prefer tabs at each end. i can never get my corners to all line up so nicely. i always end up having to make adjustments, no matter how carefully i stitch.
I learned something new, thanks I think I could actually use this method for alterations in som garments especially dresses. I think the way you do it is also very nice with the tabs. Thanks for showing us! ❤👍
Thanks Christine for taking the time to show us this method. There is definitely learning in this video for me. I love the bag too, it's so neat and the fabric is really lovely. Thank you ❤
Hi Christine thank you for doing your take on this method , I use this method when I am making gifts as I think it does give the bag a professional finish and the opening is a little larger than when using tabs at both ends. I do the top stitching when the bag is finished and pulled through , I sew from where the tab meets the zip along one side then round the corner where the zip is curved , then back along the other side. I find this then helps the lining at the curved zip end stay down iinto thebag. Hope this makes sense , also I called out " you have forgotten to open the zip " 😂
Thanks for this video. I love the Butler method, I find that adding tabs on both ends looks pretty, but limits the opening of the pouch. Also, by not top-stitching the lining eliminates the dented corners at the top, I really don't like the dented corners. This gives a much more professional look. Your pouch looks wonderful!
I made one of these bags from your tutorial, It turned out well. I needed a birthday gift for a friend and who doesn't need another zippered pouch! Thank you for a great project tutorial! I'm a new subscriber and fan!

Haha, I'm always forgetting to open my zips. ☺️
Well done, I might try this, greatings from Istanbul
Thank you Canberk😁
Thanks for this video. I love the Butler method, I find that adding tabs on both ends looks pretty, but limits the opening of the pouch. Also, by not top-stitching the lining eliminates the dented corners at the top, I really don't like the dented corners. This gives a much more professional look. Your pouch looks wonderful!
