Two showings of the merfolk deck on the channel both times it had such an explosive start. Nice to see precons nowadays having such a good power-level. Really helps new players getting into magic and not being so far behind casual pods power-wise.
That's mostly the merfolk commander. Explore is probably far stronger than wotc intended.
Hakbal is a 4 mana 3/3 ceeature that also serves as ramp, draw, draw again, and has a lord effect that makes slivers jealous all on his own. He's the epitome of board wipe or bust if dropped on curve.
Every channel I've seen playing the precons so far merfolk has popped off really fast cause of Hakbal.
@@JEL625 explore is fine. Exploring 3 to 4 times a turn is insane
the merfolk feels like chulane it's a bit too much
I believe you have to resolve the full trigger of the merfolk commander before resolving any other triggers. Every merfolk exploring is a single trigger, so the benthic biomancer getting a counter and looting wouldn’t resolve until the other trigger fully resolves
Yep, this is true.
Crim kept forgetting to draw his card for turn AFTER the Twilight Prophet trigger. It does actually draw you an ADDITIONAL card, not just draining off the card you’d draw anyway. It Bobs wrong. It’s a great card!
It's to be expected from a player used to green and white. Drawing extra cards isn't usually in their wheelhouse.
He's a fucking idiot..between him and Seth idk how the fuck that channel is alive
@@remembertobreathe66he also plays nissa and every deck and that doesn’t draw cards
I saw Crim, and knew this was going to be some nutty Grixas upgrade shinans
I thought he was a selesnyia player
@@razorskatermax35 man, he's the best Selesnyia player. Can't wait to see him brew his next top-tier GW deck!
Nah he loves simic
This might be my new go to content. There is just the right amount of banter and the games flow well with the editing. Some channels I feel have WAY too much banter that’s unnatural and just people trying to hard to laugh at anything, the game is super slow and you don’t even know wtf is going on in the game. I was able to follow throughout this game. Great content and more of my type of play-style also!
This crew has polished their editing of the gameplay just right. Plus the great mix of players they rotate in and out each week as well as mix of types of Commander they play keeps each episode nice and minty fresh - nothing to ever get tired of or any one person to get annoyed of!
Maybe would be better to keep Akroma's Will for some protection, but that's ok. Amazing game, guys! So excited for Pantlaza!

when a creature an opponent controls dies while you control both yahenni and patron of the vein, I believe that you will get both triggers, getting an extra counter on yahenni. I could be mistaken, but Patron of the Vein isn't a replacement effect, it's a triggered ability (unlike leyline of the void). I tried searching online for a definitive answer but couldn't find anything, but I'm pretty sure you would still get the death triggers even when patron is on the battlefield.
I agree with you, is worded as a triggered ability.
Yes patron of the vein is not a replacement. It doesn't say, "if a creature would die.. Exile it instead." It says "whenever a dies" so that creature did indeed die, go to the yard, then got exiled from there
Love the casual edH games you do and pre-con battles are my favorite, y'all are great players and it is great to see what these decks can do standard and with a small upgreat.
I really enjoyed seeing yall play the precons out of the box, and then upgraded a few times!
I love aaron's budget upgrades
No bias here
Hey, you look familiar!
Especially putting in another lord to give your merfolk islandwalk and then taking out the big smily boy that gives your opponents islands ...
sleeved up a new deck and couldn't help but think about how nice one of those gamegenic boxes would have been to have cause oh my god the slippery sleeves
Now that I’m here first I just wanna say I love the spike feeders
Maybe I'm tripping, but I think Crim believes he can only crew on his turn, but you can crew at anytime. This also means when you crew, the artifact creature is gonna go back to being just an artifact at cleanup step.
he just forgot to crew in response to the fight
42:48 the patron grew all maddy's vampires (and exiled the bronzebeak) as well. And patron would cause skeleton crew to trigger as well since it's a triggered ability that removes the card from a graveyard.
I cannot recommend enough putting Wildgrowth Walker into the Merfolk deck.
Yeah. Might put one in mine since it lets your survive the game longer. Good thing I already have some copies from my standard mtg days.
It’s a nightmare in the best way.
What about Shadowed Caravel
I can see this being so good omg.
I love the Gamegenic stuff. I know them from your videos and have bought a few products and they are so good and high quality. I just wish it was more easily available in the stores near me.
Sup Spikes :) Hai Crim!. Just started watching the ep, I like the changes you made Aaron, will be interesting to see how they play out. Would be interested to see an upgraded manabase version of the precons with these changes. Looking forward to picking these decks up from my LGS (my set's already waiting for me) on release day.
Let us know what you thought of the changes once you finish! :)
I love the upgraded precon videos!
Me: hmmm, Crim hasn't done much fuckery this game, seems weird
Crim: proceeds to do crime
Me: ah, there it is
He gets so much joy out of it too 😂
Crim on The Spike Feeders? Love the crossover !
Crim constantly getting smacked because he didn't realize Zephyr Singer has vigilance felt so bad.
Loving the merfolk deck... Pretty impressive...
fun game overall and Crim is *so* damn entertaining whenever I see him as a guest here or on LRR content
Crim cracks me up! 😂
“I love green mages”
“I play Selesnya”
“Never played blue”
“Grixis is new for me”
Hmmmm…. 😅😂😅
Good game. Carmen, Cruel Skymarcher I think needs more sacrifice edict effects in it to get more value from her.
Yeah Carmen is sweet. I think I'll be putting a handful of the cards from the precon into my Elenda Build. :) - Maddy
Been building Carmen in various ways to see which is the best/I like the most. Carmen is a maniac, I love her so much! Ranger captain of eos does work! Also tragic arrogance and promise of loyalty seem really strong. I’m also smashing token generators that are cheap enough to help me pump out Carmen quickly and they also trigger Carmen when sac’d. Great synergy!
Oh and her art is 🔥. Reminds me of old magic art, nostalgic AF!
your commander games are fun to watch,. ty!
At 7:40 would benthic biomancer be able to draw at that time, or would you need to wait until the entire explore effect from Hakbal concluded in order to move to the draw triggers?
Hakbal's trigger would need to resolve first before benthic can draw a card since it is a single trigger.
I always trip over Pantlazas name and read it as Sun-Flavored. The deck sure looks spicy.
I wish I could see the card's you refer to more clearly, maybe larger? Might be my connection, but i think it'll help level your channel up as far as glossy quality goes! X
Merfolk deck seems sweet. Great game.
Did you all misscalculated the Shared Animosity trigger? If 5 Creatures attack they get +4/+0 not +5/+0 ... the attacking creature get +1/+0 for each OTHER attacking creature that is attacking.
Could you guys maybe put the cards up for another second or two and make them bigger. Much love from CT can’t wait to see how the channel grows :)
How are you going to add part of the combo by adding Vito but remove exquisite blood?
I was confused by this as well! Maybe because they didn't add Sanguine Bond?
Probably didn't want to have an infinite in the deck.
I was thinking this myself! Like take out something else and add in sanguine bond and change out a couple of the additions to better fit that theme.
I can only think it's because they didn't want anyone to be able to win by going infinite and killing everyone at once
Lol Crim's intro is hilarious. I'm not sure he can name a card in green or white off the top of his head
love the upgrades!!! great game with swings
Something small that got missed that in this game that made no difference but can in the future is trying to stack Pantlaza's trigger at 38:13. If decide to do Ghalta's trigger before Pantlaza's and a creature like Topiary Stomper comes in, the Stomper's ETB can't be stacked under Pantlaza's that was already on the stack beforehand.
Cordial Vamp for the new. Love those curly locks
"HI I'm Crim I play selesnya..." best opening
Eliot's and Crim's sleeves matching each other's playmats is bothering my soul, but Maddy's complementary colors are satisfying.
Also, Crim casting a board wipe before he even cast a single creature is so on brand.
That was the least lifeline I have ever seen after an akroma's will in this deck! The other day I played and got 268 life 😂 love this deck
Can someone explain the trigger Crim misses at 37:19? I've looked up the ruling and dont understand how it causes skeleton crew to trigger
Also would skeleton crew trigger off a token leaving the graveyard on death? Or have wizards implemented a rule against that since it doesnt mention anything about nontoken creatures.
When your Commander dies, it goes to the graveyard and -- before anyone would get priority you have the option to move it from your graveyard to the command zone as a state-based action. Normally we shortcut this and put the creature directly into the CZ unless something relevant happens when the commander dies, like when Elenda the Dusk Rose makes tokens.
When Crim chooses to put his commander into the CZ, it leaves his graveyard and triggers Skeleton Crew to make a token.
You're definitely right in that tokens hit the graveyard momentarily before ceasing to exist, but tokens aren't cards, so anything that cares about cards specifically leaving your graveyard won't trigger when tokens go away.
@@TheSpikeFeedersThat was such an easy explanation to understand. Really appreciate you taking time to respond. Going to be extremely useful knowing the CZ interaction and that specifying creature card excludes tokens moving forward!
I`ve been reading the decklist for Veloci-ramp-tor and i don`t see Akroma`s Will in any of them, but this is the second of these preview matches i`ve seen it pop up so i guess ill just wait till the 17th to find out what`s actually in the deck lol
But It is in the deck. The most valuable card in It, and a good reprint.
www.moxfield.com/decks/viXU1nCwOkmTU5FGQu8MFw This is the stock list for the deck.
Crim full of shit with the Selesnya comment, that made me crack up. Love that guy ❤
Hakbal's trigger is being used wrong. It is a single trigger ,so the Benthic Biomancer trigger(s) don't occur until after the exploring. Hakbal doesn't give the other merfolk explore; he causes them to explore.
Yep, we're all aware of that now. Unfortunately we have to film these episodes like a month before the set release notes come out, so sometimes we're going to make mistakes that seem obvious today.
@@TheSpikeFeeders Glad to hear. If I could make a recommendation, I would recommend leaving a pinned comment about the mistake. This would allow other viewers to know about the mistake or commenting about it like I did.
So 12:40 ish; is that how topgrahpy tracker and the biomancer interact?
Currently very unsure of how this works, so if someone has some clarification or can point out a mistake in my thoughts id be grateful
i thought tracker is a replacement effect and it would go smth like this:
trigger your commander to explore on all merfolk, resolve the ability, explore all during the resolution of this trigger; make the biomancer explore first if you want, which gets replaced by x2 eplores in the same event; then you put two counters on it if you so choose (keeping the card on top); explore with your other merfolk
and you get to loot TWICE (or once?) after resolving all your explores on all merfolk?
You are partially correct. The correct order is, explore explore, loot loot. You do still get the double loot, because while they are resolving from the same trigger, there is a comma between the instances of explore, so they are considered 2 different events for the purposes of "one or more" counters being placed. It's a weird sequence of events.
@@matthugenberg8869 yeah was expecting as much.
But it's also finish the commanders trigger, explore which each of the merfolk, before the loots is placed on the stack right?
@@Egovinco98 correct, hakbal makes each merfolk explore as the result of one ability, so you have to resolve it entirely before the loot can happen
I didn't see of any of crims stuff that he brought back with his commander died but I heard 0 mention of the finality counters that exile that creature when it dies
Shared Animosity says each *other* attacking. +4/+0 for the first attack. 😅 not sure how much it matters.
Oop! They caught and fixed. Nice.
I must have missed something- how was Mist Dancer cast at instant speed @31:44 ?
I shook my head once he milled the Deeproot Historian. Smh.
Great game! 40:13 if you cast Akroma's Will before the Apex Altisaur ETB trigger can't you just make him fight all the oponents creatures and have them all destroyed? Or would the "protection from all colors" on the Altisaur prevent that? If not, he could destroy everything and still be available moving on to combat with all the Akroma's Will benefits, right?
Edit: I just realized that it seems he top decked Akroma's Will, but I will appreciate it if someone can clarify if the "protection from all colors" prevents the Altisaur from destroying everything.
Protection means the enrage wouldn't trigger since protection prevents damage (DEBT: Damaged Enchanted Blocked Targeted). So if it just gave indestructible yes it would be a one sided wrath but since it also gives protection it would fight one creature, take no damage, and not fight again.
@@TheNigel2010 many thanks!
Patron of the Vein is not a replacement effect. Maddy would have gotten counters on Yahenni at 44:53
he had to have. top decked the akroma’s will, becuse otherwise I’m so confused why Eliot didn’t cast it while his apex altisaur was in play 😳
New to the channel, where can I find the decklists for this video?
BIG vampires need more ramp i think, 5 cmc vampire should be the max and have big impact
😂 calling Crim a Fellow green mage. I bet he loved that.
Kopala only taxes spells your opponents CAST and abilities your opponents ACTIVATE. Bronzebeak Foragers is a TRIGGERED ability so any of Aaron's non-token merfolk could have been targeted and exiled successfully.
All the banter about Kinjalli’s Sunwing and then everyone immediately forgets their creatures are entering tapped. And as I’m typing this comment they realized it.
Anywhere to see the upgraded deck lists?
Question: Did the mana base also get upgraded or no? 4:48
The only upgrades are listed at the beginning during the deck intros
there is an audio mess up with The gamegenic add
I don't think I've ever seen someone play akroma's will and still lose
Pulled out exquisite blood and added Vito… traded a combo piece for the other combo piece😭
Probably didn't want an easy infinite combo in a budget precon upgrade game
@@jacobuphoff2969 makes sense, I just thought it was funny
Good Game Maddy!
why did you guys take out exquisite blood and put Vito in? I mean exquisite blood + vito = Wincon
Theres not a single video where Hakbal is played right. I get that at the time the video is made, it was just released and people did not understand the ruling. But people still come to these channels to figure out how the commander plays. In this instance, Hakbal’s explore trigger is a single ability that cannot be interrupted once it starts, including your own triggers. Meaning that your benthic biomancer would trigger after all the exploring was done. And you would only draw and discard one card, that is why it reads “if one or more counters.” I wish these channels would go back and make a note for the bigger mistakes they make.
What does typal mean? Heard it referenced multiple times
It refers to decks that are centered mechanically around a specific creature type. It was formerly referred to as tribal, but that term has some unintended connotations so it was phased out.
@@TheSpikeFeeders
^ Typal has already been done away with. Kindred has actually now replaced typal. But just like “species” is replacing “race” in DnD books nobody really cares.
CRIM! 🤘🏼
I'm really digging the graphics at the start, but when we do this again, could we show either the whole card (there is a bunch of extra space on the sides of the video anyway) or at the very least, obscure the left hand side of the cards instead of right?
There's a lot of crucial information on what a card does on the right hand side of the card (namely P/T and mana cost)
How was Aaron able to cast Hakbal at 6:46
Nevermind Kiora is target permanent 😮 I thought it was target creature
I'm gonna comment this before I watch fully so feal free to rip into me when it actually works out but I'm so confused by the cards taken out of each deck some where must runs in the deck like combo cards taken out for the other half of the combo and some other cards that just make what those deck wanna do actually work
Deck lists?
Imagine if Aaron had kept the retrace merfolk for after the blasphemous act
As always a small mistake and without counter spells, everything is lost
The merfolk that creates a map token and makes you explore again, isn't it 1 + 2 explores.
It's a replacement effect, so it's two (since it's 1 + 1).
Only here could we say taking out some of the not so good pirates and take out Pitiless Plunderer
I'm a simple man: I see an Asian Avenger and I push Like
Why didn't he get his galtha back?
I'm just here to watch Crim play Grixis, show me how to Luffy Captain.
Where’s the honorary pirate opposition agent
Merfolk go brrrr
I must keep the tradition.
Ban Crim.
so I assume Elliott avoids playing Gruul because of his colorblindness and not because gruul is bad in cEDH hehe
Guys, i need help... Commander deck must contain every card with different name, yes? And there are few ghaltas in one deck. Based on rule 201.2a two object have same name if they have at least one name in common. Do i get it wrong? Because for me "Ghalta, whatever" has same name as "Ghalta, anything"... Please, explain what im getting wrong. Thanks
Hi there! The card's name is all of the text at the top of the card, not just the name of the character depicted on the card.
This means you can't include two copies of Ghalta, Primal Hunger, but you can have one Ghalta, Primal Hunger and one Ghalta, Stampede Tyrant.
@@TheSpikeFeeders Thank you :) ... Can u please explain meaning of rule 201.2a? Im very confused about it. Rule say "Two or more objects have the same name if they have at least one name in common, even if one or more of those objects have additional names. An object with no name doesn't have the same name as any other object, including another object with no name."
Cards can have multiple full names because of a card called Spy Kit, which grants the equipped creature the name of every nonlegendary card in the game.
This rule explains that if you have a card named Llanowar Elves and you equip it with Spy Kit, and you have a Phyrexian Revoker naming Elves of Deep Shadow, the Phyrexian Revoker will prevent the equipped Llanowar Elves from being activated.
@@TheSpikeFeeders Now that makes a perfect sense to me.. Thank you very much, you saved me and my play group from lot of arguments. I cant wait to see their decks in full strenght again ❤️
You guys need a full time judge to remind you of your triggers and ongoing effects because you missed TONS in both of the videos I watched about these decks.
Would certainly be nice to have. Currently not in the budget though!
Crim!!!!
Strange that you didn't swap the commanders. For I believe some legendaries are better commanders than the ones from the box. With Brass and Carmen as exceptions. But that's just my opinion
I do not watch you guys a lot but I would suggest making the Commercials yourself.
They mansplained the Yahenni and the Patron triggers wrong. They are not remplacement effects but triggered abilities, so both had to go to the stack and thus Yahenni could have grown as twice as much. The wording on both abilities reads the same "Whenever a creature an opponent controls dies".
Crim, the casual grixis player... lmfao
Trible*
You can tell they dont play infinites when they took exquisite blood out of carmen then put vito in 🤭
Crimmmm
First
Ah vampires… total garbage… until they’re not 😂
