The crazy part of the merfolk commander is that he wasn't utilizing his commander abilities. When commander swings you may pay a land if you dont draw he hasnt been drawing.
And also he could make one creature unblockable with Rogue's Passage and killed Eliot or Wheeler easily
He mentions this at 27:20!

Just so you know, you dont HAVE to discover on the first dino you play. You just can only discover on one dino a turn. Just a little fyi for the people who end up wanting that deck

What a game. Definitely would have hoped to see more of the pirates but still a good turn out.
We've got 2 more games coming! One on Monday, and another next Thursday.
The only deck I wish was better was the pirate one. Every preview I’ve seen so far literally did nothing compared to the other three. Sure it got very good solid reprints, but unlike the other decks that got cards that just built on what the deck already did well with the pirate one got this previously not supported in pirates before return from graveyard mechanic. Sure get extra etb but it’s like wow my 3/3 became a 4/4! Would’ve liked if new face commander built up their steal mechanic or worked with treasures.
The Wheeler deck really is everything I like rolled into one package. Skeletons. Pirates. Grixis. That's a good list.
I think I'll need the Merfolk and Vampire deck.
For engagement: Elendra should have had 2 more counters from the 2 removals before.

Serge makes me feel better about all the misplays I make playing commander.. .It is a difficult game to get right all the time! So many rules to follow and remember and keep track of!

Honestly I was pleasantly surprised with the comedy and banter in general. A lot of the time I cringe with a lot of groups I find playing on youtube, but you guys were just great the whole time.

Dude every time I've seen early access Precons from LCI, merfolk has been the most cracked. It's just so streamlined and synergistic (as they are known to be)
It's insane, first time I have looked at a precon list and 90% of the cards I figured I would need to put in are already there

13:26 If you don't have a land to put into play from Hakbal's second clause, you can draw that card you saved on top to explore for each merfolk. Everyone seems to miss that very last sentence (27:06 Got there!).
Yes every game I’ve what, people is overwhelming with the explorer trigger and misses the land drop or the draw trigger LOL, but the deck still go very well

Why would you move to combat with a loaded board of vampires without recasting clavileño?! His whole abiloty is vampires attacking, all your vamps inclidong tokens could have transformed into 4/3 flying vamp demons + card draw but not if you dont have clavileño
Now that I have watched 4 of these precon games, the pirate is pretty far behind the other 3 and the Merfolk appears to be the strongest. Good game, enjoyed the watch
Yeah i was a little dissapointed as well. Merfolk has been a strong tribal for a long time now and pirates was really weak compared to that, and instead of giving the pirates a massive upgrade ( well the did get better but not that much) they choose to buff the merfolk even more, clearly visible here.
Said it in another post but think it’s because unlike the other three decks that just added new cards that improved on what the deck already excelled at the pirate one tried a “new” mechanic instead of fully improving on what the original cards were going for.
Don’t know how they looked at the other three face commanders and then the pirate one and said this is fine.
The Merfolk deck seems over powered. I like it. In a meta with more board wipes it will be more even. That Dino deck is pretty sweet too. Pirates and and Vampires looked ok but not as strong at the others.
It honestly just had the best start of the three. But the deck does look solid.

I got a question for all commander players.
Why do people wait till everyones turn to fetch a land at the players end step and make everyone wait till you get a land and shuffle your deck? Why not do it on your turn?
Generally I'd say it has to do with presenting that you may be able to respond to something. If you can fetch for mana that comes in untapped then you might be able to respond to something your opponent is doing. If you've already fetched for mana on your turn, your opponent knows you don't have any tricks up your sleeve. So usually it's best practice to wait until right before you start your turn.
@TheSpikeFeeders I get that for fetch lands, but for EV and TME, they come in tapped. Unless you have replacement effects. If you're on turn one evolving wilds and wait to crack it until the last players end step, then you take 10 to 30 seconds to find your land, and then a minute to shuffle could have been done when the turn people are turn one land and passing.
Edit: I'm still new to magic for almost 3 years, playing only commander and limited. And used to fetch lands on players' end steps, then decided that it's fast to pass and then fetch to keep the game moving.
@@brendanrobot1 It is generally a habit. And there's also the "I can react to the final board state prior to my turn and pick the best choice" argument.

Yeah he started with a Sol Ring, but this game made me pretty happy with my decision to grab the merfolk, that commander is absurd. Probably would have won if he remembered the draw triggers.

Thanks for great content! and im so happy Eliot got to play LazerPants! but correct me if im wrong (i might be, and or be unaware of what cards actually are in Eliots hand) but Pantlaza's Discover trigger is a "may" so there where times still cards in hand (unknown cards i know) so am i wrong in thinking there were where potentially other options for the discover trigger ? and sunfrill can copy Pantlaza to DOUBLE trigger each dino ETB? If I had a nickel for each commander show that was displaying the LCC Commander decks and the merfolk deck had a turn 1 sol ring, I would have two nickels, wich isn't a lot but it sure is weird it happened twice

I have a question that maybe someone can answer because I am being lazy and not googling it. If Jim has exquisite blood on the field and the other two players take combat damage, does he not gain that amount as life? Or is it only triggered by direct damage like spells, drains, pings etc? Thanks.

I thought EACH merfolk had to explore each time
They do. But if you know the top card is a nonland and you choose to leave it there, it's easy to shortcut it into just putting a +1/+1 counter on each. (Remember that you only draw it if it's a land! If it's a nonland and you choose not to put it in your graveyard, it stays on top.)

This may be a stupid question, but were these the precons being played straight out of the box? I saw alot of cards that seemed to be added on.
This episode was straight out of the box. There's some great cards in these decks!
The cards may appear to be added on because (probably due to release schedule), most often non-PreCon prints were used in the overlay.
To clarify; they are thus in fact NOT added on. It is just seeming.
To be honest it's insane how far ahead the Merfolk deck is compared to the other 3 precons. This happened in every video I saw of people playing with the new decks (probably like 10). If the Merfolk deck doesn't win it's a collective effort of all 3 other players and yet in many videos the Merfolk deck still wins. I think it's fair to say that the Merfolk deck is by far the strongest out of these 4 at this point. I also don't understand why people like the Dino commander so much. From the matches that I saw, the majority of times you shuffle good creatues under your library and bring at best mediocre ones into play, if even. Sure you can be lucky but most of the time I feel like you lose more than you actually win. It's an improvement that you may choose to take the card into your hand instead of being forced to play it but still. I might be wrong on this one but I really think with Cascade~ish mechanics you either go all-in on it like that one deck where you have multiple cascades on your cards then or you just don't cascade at all and focus on other mechanics. I might be wrong on that but I REALLY think statistics prove me right on this one. Anyone made completely different experiences? It's kinda the same with the enrage mechanic. From what I saw it works only as an 'Okay well, now it's there, fine.' thing but you can't really be like 'Okay, I chose my 2nd Commander and play enrage primarily.' Again, you can be lucky and get exactly the Dinosaurs you need for it and then it will probably work out fine. In all other cases it's very likely you'll have a rather sad match there.
Precon wise I think you're right but out in the wild that dino commander is gonna be a menace
Pantlaza is missing two much big creature/dino staples like all three Ghaltas, Etali the Fun one, Gishath, Tyrranax Rex and Monster Manual. Most of the creatures in the precon are toughness to cmc negative, which hurts the discover mechanic. I´d rather see her in the 99 of a Gishath/Zacama deck instead of being the helm. Ghalta Primal for two discover into Etali the Fun One into a big cheat spell like Majestic Genesis or Last March of the Ents got me 50+ power on board yesterday.
Mhh, tbh I have a hard time seeing that currently but I've been away from Magic for many years, only returning a couple months ago. So there are maaany cards I don't know. I'm very intrigued into seeing peoples attempts at making that Commander work in custom decks. :) @@Lucarioguild7
Yeah I was rather disappointed by the dinos they've chosen for the deck anyways. It's like none of the dinos they were revealing up to the full deck reveal (reprint-wise) made it into the deck. I don't remember all those names yet as I have to catch up on like ten years worth of cards but even the one that gets all the dinos from your hand into the game when playing it. I feel like that's the card with the most attention on it beforehand and they don't put it in there then!? Currently my friends are still learning the game so we are sticking to PreCon-Powerlevels but as soon as they know the game well enough to advance from there I will change a lot about that deck, maybe even going for what you've said. @@jojobetzler3732
@@style0vertalent191 At least they've should put in the old Ghaltas. The new Ghalta, Etali, Primal Conqueror and Gishath have been left out because WotC want to sell packs on the shelf. To sell the deck they've included Akroma's Will, Decendent's Path and Apex Altisaur. In europe the deck is going for 60+ euro in presale.
I like the reprints in the precons this year, but i don't like the complexity creep in them. I'm glad I didn't have to learn commander with the latest precons, where even judges like Jim struggle with the sequencing and other triggers.

As seasoned Merfolk player this is completely normal phenomenon my Kumena deck have very big win ratio and my playgrups know I'm threat when I play this deck and it doesn't matter.

Except Pantlaza is legendary - which results you in choosing between either.
