When the Right Tool is Embarrassing...

  • I filmed some fire trucks in Florida in June. My phone was doing a much better job than my Sony a7Siii. Reconciling that was easy, but embracing it was a big challenge as I tried to appear professional.
Let's hope they keep hiring me....

I can relate so much to this. In regards to camera equipment, my friend and I started doing shoots about eight years ago. We had a Song A7S (the Original) and stock lenses. Going into shoots with this stuff seemed like we were judged because the clients had this perception that you needed a big crew and big cameras to do a job. That's not their fault, they only went off of what they saw in ads and social media. We dealt with that criticism for the first couple of years even when we got the A7Sii and A7iii. People just didn't understand what kind of quality you can get out of these small cameras. Nowadays it's taken the next step where phones are turning into the mirrorless cameras of when I started. Now there are many differences but the perception is the same as it was back then with the mirrorless cameras.
Now to audio and lighting. No one cares, as long as it sounds good. People don't pay attention to the audio and lighting unless it's bad. Which is a blessing and a curse as an audio person. I once had a person say to me "wow, that's a big mic". Not gonna touch the hidden meaning they might have had lol. But it was just a shotgun mic in a blimp on a pole. Not even knowing what kind of mic it was. Granted it was a 416, but they didn't know or even care if they did.
It's just amazing how the perception of the content creation world has changed with every generation. This also applies in all walks of life and tech related to them. Thanks for a cool video, I can definitely understand what you mean.

I never thought about the audio piece of it. I use an NT5 for most jobs which many professional location sound mixers may scoff at. But it does the job and the client has no idea that it’s not a commonly used mic. It’s so much of what they see from social media or in movies. You expect a huge rig and a multi person crew. Even using my F3! There’s trust there, they don’t need to see a giant sling bag full of wireless receivers. They just trust unless they have a preconceived notion.
I’m eager to see what the next generation does when they unleash themselves and start to do some serious work.

    1. They hire you because you have a vision of the final piece, and you can edit and make titles
    2. Phone is good outside. Optimized. Indoors the pro gear is better.
    Good to see you again:)

Good to be back! I watched that Farm video you uploaded a few months ago. In spite of not understanding a word of it, it was mesmerizing.
      See you soon!

I recognize this and I think I put it into a cage and make it look professional 😉
Like your videos! They are so thoughtful!

Thank you for the lovely comment! I might try a cage, but I do love the convenience of a naked phone. The more I add to it, the less nimble it becomes.

I keep getting more and more shocked how good the camera on your phone can be. I definitely feel your embarrassment with being hired and showing up with an IPhone but sometimes the best tool for the job isn’t always the most expensive

Yeah. Ego plays a role in my decision as well as the client’s reaction. Their ego of “we hired some dude who showed up with just a phone” instead of trusting me to use the right tools. Ego is everywhere!
