Something to note is that if the consonant is at the beginning of the word it makes a harder/aspirated sound instead of the softer sound.

EXACTLY. I started learning Korean 2 days ago and this exact thing you pointed out is really confusing for me.
      For me it sounds like:
      - ㄲ: "g"
      - ㄱ: between "g" and "k" (soft "k")

I know that romanization can be bad but that's how these sound to me.

It's the accepted romanization systems that are confusing me. I wish there was a more sensible Korean romanization system for us Europeans, that didn't confuse people about these 3 types of consonants. Something like k, kh and gg for the ˝k-group˝ makes sense- maybe? According to what I'm hearing on my Korean class, and in this video.

To anyone intimidated by this I would def, recommend slowing the video down (in the 0.5/0.25 function) and/or repeating it until you can hear the difference in your own pronunciations. Because once you get it the fast pace really forces you to not think but do. Fantastic resource ! 감사합니다 한국어 언니 !

Watching this video I can tell that's a huge lie! You must aspirate those letters at the beginning just not as much as ㅋ,ㅌ,ㅍ, and ㅊ. So because I tried hard not to aspirate those letters they ended up sounding in the same way that the double consonants, it was a struggle I tell you lol. Very helpful video I'm very thankful!

감사합니다. Very helpful. Still tough for my ears to hear it in words. More listening. Also, love the turtle ship hook in the background and transitions.
