This song always makes me think of my granddad who is of the ripe old age of 96. He was a pilot in the Second World War flying in hurricanes, spitfires, Lancasters, thunderbolts and just about every other aircraft available to the RAF. He was in the Battle of Britain as well as many others. I remember one story he told me about when he was in a Lancaster bomber carpet bombing Germany. Grandad was in the co-pilot seat, they’re being tailed by a Messerschmitt and suddenly the central gunner’s head explodes and he falls limp out of the turret. No words are exchanged between pilot and copilot but the pilot gestures with a subtle flick of his eye brows toward the back of the plane as an instruction to Grandad to go and fill the empty gunner seat. So he did just that and ran down the plane corridor, climbed up into the turret and started firing back again. Can you imagine what that would have been like? Wow. As you can probably tell, I am very proud of him.
Shawn Powell Yeah he’s alive and well. What’s interesting is that for years he wouldn’t talk to anyone about the war, not my grandmother nor my dad or any of his siblings. But me his grandson everybody is amazed he is opening up and taking to. It could be because I dared to ask about it when no one else did. It’s interesting nonetheless.
Mitch P I’m sure he’d appreciate that being the humble man he is, even though he won himself a chest full of medals that he also incidentally lost in the move to Australia where we all live now.

I'm well aware that Churchill became (to put it in kind terms) a patriarchal, racist, flag-toting utter asshole for British Empire conquests. I'm not saying that's a good thing to be either. Frankly, I'd be happy to see his statue get vandalised more often. However, does the fact that victory in WW2 did not lead the world to some sort of systematic conquering, and eventual total replacement by "der Herrenmenschen" not, at least, bring you to the conclusion that Hitler and his Nazis (which had supplanted the original party) were _to some degree_ worse than Churchill (even if not by leaps and bounds) in their active ideologies? My great grandfather (canadian) fought in the first world war when he was 15... the army told him he was too young but because he was so poor with no alternatives they took him in. He was also a gunner during WW2 I know this song is about pilots but still it still reminds me of him. Too bad I never knew him I heard crazy story from his daughter ( my grandmother). If it wasn't for those heros, we wouldnt be living this good today.
If you're interested in war stories. During WW1 at Gallipoli, Turkish and Anzac soldiers who fought fiercely hours ago, would trade cigarrettes and even food (although resources were pretty low) during the short truces for things like collecting their dead.
I went to high school with John DeHaven's son. I noticed his father was a bit older than the rest of our dads. I found out he was a WWII ace, actually double ace, almost triple as he shot down 14 Japanese aircraft. After WWII he worked for Hughes Aircraft and was even Howard Hughes' personal pilot at one point. He was still working for Hughes in the late 80s when we graduated. I lost touch with my friend, but thanks to Facebook, we still keep in touch. His father died in 2008, a badass of a man.
I really do love these videos of yours. I love the songs you react to, and the philosophical discussions they bring on. I remember listening to your Iron Maide, Hallowed be Thy Name reaction video in which Vin said something akin to: these old metal bands were delving into deeper issues. Made me think of how you guys would react to the music style and lyrical style of the German Thrash Metal band "Kreator" and their album "Enemy of God", on the topic of going into these topics. (And no, the title of the album has nothing to do with hating Christianity or anything like that. Just pick a few songs and check the lyrics, and you'll see what I mean)
I once took a trip to Normandy over Memorial Day weekend. Our group's tour guide was a German who had been a kid during WW2. Before we went to the beaches and American cemetery, the guide took us to a German cemetery. This was the late 90s. It was the first time I really understood, what you said. Those guys weren't Nazis. They were just soldiers fighting for their country. Look forward to the next Iron Maiden song.
An Ace fighter pilot has 5 confirmed kills. It might seem easy to achieve but it's actually so difficult they have this special "Ace" title. You must remember, the enemy wants to live. They want to shot you down. They learned to fly too. They want to win.
No Bullets Fly by Sabaton is the song about Franz Stigler and his encounter with the Ye Old Pub crew. Aces High is about the defense of England during the Battle of Britain in 1940.
I love how the young people say that this song was before we were born. I'm glad I've experienced it first hand! Iron Maiden and the older bands are special to me because they told awesome stories! Iron Maiden is my favorite band of all time period!
Hello guys! I want to add something about the "I'm gonna die in a plane crash" and the proper mindset for this. If you look into US Air Force hymn for example - there is a verse saying "We live in fame or go down in flame". You can dig about fearlessness (not sure about this word) in RAF exactly, and here i would definitely recommend "Reach for the sky" by Paul Brickhill. It is a biography of Douglas Bader - a pilot who lost his legs before the war, but then made a giant effort to recover and take a part in the air war, and to do a lot of other fearless stuff even while being prisoner of war.
Hey vin and sorri. It’s nice to hear you guys acknowledge these pilots which Churchill called the few. The Battle of Britain which this song is about was the tale of the RAF. Against the Luftwaffe. But the RAF in this fight constituted pilots from Britain ,Australia, many free polish pilots, Canadian and even Israeli. South African, and even an American eagle squadron I think. Pilots were gentleman during the war and respected each other greatly. If you guys ever have time watch the classic movie The Battle of Britain. It will give you some perspective to this song. Plus the planes were real and not CGI. Keep the great reactions coming guys.🤘
Looked like you were expecting to hear "Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner" with that intro, haha! This has always been one of my favorite songs to listen to while driving mountain backroads!

This song is based on the Battle of Britain first battle fought in the air in WW2.
Love smashing this one out in the car full volume, my Great-Grandfather flew a Spitfire mk1 during the Battle of Britain in 1940! Nice reaction!
If you're interested in war stories. During WW1 at Gallipoli, Turkish and Anzac soldiers who fought fiercely hours ago, would trade cigarrettes and even food (although resources were pretty low) during the short truces for things like collecting their dead.
Churchill's speech is essential to the song.
You're a top bloke Vin. This awesomeness is speaking to your soul.
Soon as you said "it's a song about card game" I burst out laughing cause I knew it was about British Aces in WW2 lmfao m8 😎😂
Seeing you rock out puts a smile on my face, Vin. :-)
Always good when Maiden is reviewed and reacted to. Revelations, Phantom of Opera, Still life would be worthwhile tracks.
One of my favourite songs by maiden
An Ace fighter pilot has 5 confirmed kills. It might seem easy to achieve but it's actually so difficult they have this special "Ace" title. You must remember, the enemy wants to live. They want to shot you down. They learned to fly too. They want to win.
No Bullets Fly by Sabaton is the song about Franz Stigler and his encounter with the Ye Old Pub crew. Aces High is about the defense of England during the Battle of Britain in 1940.
Manowar - Achilles, Agony And Ecstasy In Eight Parts
Yes!!!! This is such a great song, I am so glad you got to this one!
Nothing like an 80s guitar solo
Yes! I love when you all do Classic Maiden.
