- Making a Bushcraft Knife: The Woodlore Clone
I’m super excited to have been able to spend a few days in the shop making this Bushcraft knife. This knife is a clone of Ray Mears’ design for the best all around bushcraft knife, the Woodlore. It’s made from 1/8” think O1 steel, black and “white” acrylic liners with Black walnut scales. The handle is fixed with 1/4” brass pins and lanyard tube. The handle is shaped coke bottle style, and the blade is Scandinavian ground. The over all length is 8 1/4” with a 4 1/2”handle. this knife will be my new go-to, and I will be using this as my personal bushcraft knife for the foreseeable future, that’s how happy I am with its outcome.
Let me know what you think in the comments, and if you own an actual Woodlore, let me know how this one compares to the original.
Keep an eye out for our follow up video where I make the bushcraft sheath to match.

Why on Gods holy earth did 3 people dislike this video? This is one of if not, the most comprehensive videos on knife making. Fantastic job, very well shot. Your videography is fantastic. Well done.
I agree, who could possibly dislike this video?
Some people live in a throwaway culture, and the thought of making and refurbishing tools is an anathema to them. I love this channel, and have tried many of the projects myself in an attempt to learn new skills.
They’re cretins I guess
maybe wants the complete video with the sheath process
@@ornabels Bear Grylls, Gerber, people who missed the like button.
Another cold, dark and rainy evening spent pleasantly watching a craftsman at work.
Shoutout to Devon, the camera man. Most uTube videos, even the very good ones are shot with one camera on a tripod. If you are alone in your workshop what else can you do? That’s obviously not what we are dealing with here. The shots follow the action. Clearly there is someone who knows what he (and you ) are doing. I’ve been around photography for a long time. You can sometimes get a lucky photo. Right place, right time. But, nobody gets a lucky movie. It’s clear you put in a ton of time to deliver high quality content. Right on.
Thank you so much for the kind words Ira. We try hard to produce them to a certain level, and are always appreciative when people notice. 🙏🙏🙏
Annnd we just saw you became a Patron. Thank you!
this is one of my favourite videos on RUclips
Thanks Krc!
Euphoric video. What a beautiful job 🔪
Mate….I think even Alan wood..would congratulate on that very…very …exquisite…piece of work you’ve done there, and the late Steve W Cox,he took over making the knife for ray mears, when Alan wood stopped….take a bow sir 😬👍👏👏👏👏👏
This account is awesome, I could watch these all day
Thank you so much Brett!
I love the way you talked me through this process. As a newbie, I really need to get my head wrapped around it all so I don't miss a step. Sooo many steps.
Thanks. It’s a process, but a fun one.
I do not comment on videos very often, but as I have some downtime over Christmas, I have been catching up on your archives. I sure enjoy your attitude. You are not a tool brand snob. You save old things and give history new life. Please keep it up. It’s a real pleasure.
Such a sweet job on that handle man. Superb
A true work of art that is also functional. Well done indeed.
The Matt Brown?
Wow! That glow liners not only look awesome but are very practical in the dark too. Great video and even greater job.
Great job. What a beautiful knife ! I want one !!
I love the glow in the dark parts!
i like the way you shaping the handle
Man I would love to take a class if you teach one.
I have knives in daily use that have been in use since 1918. I think you can pride yourself that your work will achiever the same reach.
I love this video!Don't know how many times i have watched this!!!
Thank you Sherwin
My only criticism is that blade needs a maker's mark. Absolutely incredible work.
I watch a lot of makers. I love The Art of Craftsmanship the best. Purely for the the style, calmness, his shop and tools, authenticity, videography and music is great.
Thank you so much for the kind words.
Very nice video and I felt very comfortable watching it. A beautiful knive and a really god work !!!
Absolute perfection! Told my ol lady years ago I'd make her a knife. Guess it's high time I got back into the art. You inspired me friend. Thank you! 👍👍 Btw you got another subscriber.
So cool i constantly come back to this video have watched it about 4 times allready 😁
Thanks DD
Everything is so right about this knife .. the size ...the shape...the looks ....the contours.. the quality of craftsmanship that you put in it..the liners ..the walnut....I could go on and on..... I want one just like it.... And the sheath you made for it in the other video was just as awesome...
FANTASTIC!!!! As a disabled veteran I can't afford a beautiful knife like that on my disability pension, but someday maybe. What a beautiful job you did! What a treasure!
🤭
For those of us at the blunt end of the world's finances, the US$40 Condor Bushlore knife is an acceptable substitute...
@@edwardfletcher7790 These knives are nice but you really don't need them, a mora and an hatchet are everything you need and you can get them for cheap.
I’ve seen a lot of knife making videos and this is the very best one for a hobbyist like me wanting to get into knife making without breaking the bank. Thanks for the video
Awesome work 💪⚒💪⚒
I just started watching your videos. I have not made a knife yet, but I am learning alot watching you. I retire in a few months and want to start making knives. "Never had the time before now"! GOD Bless and keep the videos coming young man.
Well done!
Wow! What a blade. Hugs from Brazil.
If only there was a "1000 likes'' button. Beautiful knife...Well done!!
Brilliant knife. Love the handle. 👌👍👍
The equipment, process and time we saw invested here are why handmade knives are expensive...
The 68 thumbs down here are 68 turds. The love you have for creating your art is awesome. The video was great. I wish I could afford that knife, the glow in the dark was genius and fit the black walnut perfect. Great work man.
Super Arbeit, mein Freund!!👍👍
The choice of music and the cinematography are just superb! It makes for a very enjoyable viewing. I’ve watched every single one of your videos, and the fact that you manage to keep the quality of the content so consistent is pretty damn amazing! Keep up the good work.
Beautiful knife, very well done. Saludos, Anaco, Anz.
this is just beautiful, excellent work. You just earn another follower.
I really like watching your project.

I’d probably cut it off. Great video I learned a lot from you thanks for sharing it with us.

Отличный нож! У меня почти точно такой Здоровья вам и радовать нас новыми видео!
amazing result!!!!! concret`s !
That came out great 👍 the coke bottle handle is hard to do without a contact wheel. Ive never been able to do it well with my 4x36. Looks like you nailed it👍
i made mine with an half-round rasp, i managed to get that shape litle by litle
You make some pretty nice one to bro
Wonderful clone! Now, make a wonderful sheath, to carry it in!
You are a great craftsman!
Cheers Bill!
I absolutely loved this video!
Really cool
I like your work it show the skill and the sadisfaction you get when it looks so good.
I
Great video.
Great film, keeping it real, thanks
Glad you enjoyed it IG. Cheers!
Amazing
Fantastic video. I love knives and always wanted to try making one. I appreciate the detailed step by step.
I see a lot of demo knife making videos but you probably do the best how to videos, IMO. It’s hard to learn to do something new without working side by side with someone who can show you the way. How to videos like yours help me out a lot so thank you; sir.
Thank you Clarence. I try to think about it like you guys are right there in the shop with me.
great and amazing work
excellent work, easy listening as they say...no drama just do something....👍
Beautiful video, thank you.
Thanks Gray!
A really great piece of work thanks for sharing 👍
Thanks for watching
Amazing work man
One of the nicest knifes I’ve ever seen..
Best video by far, watched it twice. Knife making is your strong suit. Making a knife out of billet ensures the quality of the steel which is what a good knife requires.
Enjoyed video
Lovely knife 👌
A Beautiful knife great job nice
Thank you Dave.
Very nice loved the glow in the dark.
One hell of an awesome video.... the camera angles, knowledge, detail and craftsmanship are amazing. Outstanding Channel, thanks.
I've commented on this before, and I'll say it again: your camera person is OUTSTANDING! They have a great eye for the kinds of shots that keep the viewer's interest... I WISH I had someone like that to help me take my channel to that level of production!
On another note, I need to modify the table on my 1 inch belt sander like you did- I keep my table level and adjust the angle of my jig right now, but I think I'll get more consistent results doing it your way.
Great video!
Thank you so much for the kind words. We work hard to make these videos look and feel great, so it’s nice to hear that our viewers appreciate it.
agreed. professional job.
I’d be curious how many people watch these videos and never think about that. I find myself constantly being just swept away until I snap myself back and realize I’m not watching a PBS documentary or something on Nat Geo. No! I’m watching RUclips. Are you kidding me?!
That was a joy to watch. Thank you! That turned out so beautiful!
True Craftmanship - Nice!
Excellent! One of the best and easiest to follow knife making vids!
Alan Wood would be proud 🙏
What a beautiful knife. Can't wait to make one of these. A friend to carry with you forever.
Very, very impressive. Love the glowing liners. Never lose another knife at night.
GREAT JOB! Wow, the result is just incredible.
I love your work
Thank you
That 🔪 knife is a work of Art 👍
The liners are a beautiful and practical addition to the design !
Thank you for sharing your Craft 🍺
Thank you for watching Edward!
Great work! That knife came out excellent.
Outstanding! You are the man. Great job!
excellent, it is a work of art 👍🏻
You have a way of making knives and sheaths that makes a complete beginner say I think I might be able to do it too! Very simple processes with lots of detail and skill
Thanks for the kind words Marcus.
Beautiful work man!!
When you are drilling through thin plate, it can screw its self up the spinning drill. Now you have a spinning knife, looking for some fresh meat to cut. A safer way is to clamp a piece of flat mild steel in the drill vise, and then clamp the blade to that block. This eliminates the jump as the drill pulls itself through the plate.
I have survived fifty years of work as a toolmaker with no more than eight stitches at one time, but I never went back for seconds on any single mistake. The Red Cross needs your blood before it hits the shop floor.
That is a very nice project. O1 is a great steel for lots of knife work projects.
That is one beautiful knife. You did a great job and I would think give you many years of great service. Thanks for sharing the process.
Wow, awesome job, thanks for sharing.
bit late at catching this video but your right those are fantastic little magnets. but you shouldn't go side to side on the quench keep it moving front to back along the length of the blade . going side to side can introduce a warp
all your videos are great but this one was my most favorite. You explained everything so well. Very nice work. You have an amazing talent.
The only RUclips video I have ever seen that has zero ‘thumbs down’ ! Amazing.
Loved it, brilliant video and a beautiful knife too.
archiebenno dude, you jinxed it!
You would'nt believe it but I have the near identical knife, down here in NZ. Another quality build and video Sir.
Thanks Chris!
Love a horizontal grain on a handle. Beautiful knife
