Not so much verbs as verb tenses. I’ve noticed that Portuguese uses a subjunctive tense and also personal infinitive which is weird to me as a learner of Romance languages. Ex: “posso abrir a janela se quiseres.” It’s almost like “I can open the window if you were to want it.“ And then this: “Precisamos tempo para irmos ao aeroporto.” The addition of “mos” to “ir” indicates that WE need to go and not someone else. I’ve never seen this construction in any other language. I’d love to see a segment on the use of the personal infinitive some time, thank! Love ❤️ your videos!!

Could you do a video about reflexive verbs? Or at least verbs where the pronoun is attached. They seem more common in EP compared to BP, and the pronunciation is confusing to me.

I'd like to humbly add a small caveat regarding the actual, *spoken* variants of some sentences, since we (the portuguese) tend to simplify imperfects, to avoid sounding *too* formal. So:
    - "Podias fechar a janela?", for instance, is mostly used in the present, i.e. "Podes fechar a janela?" (and, yes, those can curiously *also* express two different levels of "tu"-formality ("Podias" is more formal)
    - "O que farias com 10 mil euros? Compraria um carro." absolutely correct, but what you'll actually hear is "O que *fazias* com 10 mil euros? *Comprava* um carro" (and not meaning to add to the confusion, but when using "o que fazias", it is generally spoken as "o que é que fazias...")
Sorry, and thank you again for making me realise how confusing my own language can be...

@@TalktheStreets A razão pela qual o imperfeito pode substituir o condicional, a maior parte das vezes, deve ser sentida. Da mesma maneira que se usa o presente como futuro (até em Inglês) também se pode usar o imperfeito como condicional. Não é por acaso que alguns autores chamam ao imperfeito presente do pretérito e ao condicional futuro do pretérito. A analogia é perfeita.
      Reparem:
      a) Amanhã irei à rua.

o exemplo mais marcante é EU QUERIA (I'd like to)
"com 10 mil eu comprava um carro"

    • @carlosmagalhaes7109
      @carlosmagalhaes7109 4 года назад +2

"Saber" means that you have the knowledge about something.
      Example:
"Eu sei que tu estiveste lá ontem." (I know that you were there yesterday.)
"Eu sei que o sol é amarelo." (I know that the sun is yellow.)
"Conhecer" means that you know something or someone physically.
      Example:
"Eu conheço esta cidade." (I know this city.)
"Eu conheço esta pessoa." (I know this person.)
Sometimes "conhecer" can also mean "to meet".
      Example:
"Eu conheci uma pessoa ontem." (I met a person yesterday.)
      Cheers! 👍

"Achar" and "pensar" have almost the exact same meaning.
You can use the two verbs in sentences in which you're giving your opinion.
      Example:
"Eu acho que isto é importante."
      Or
"Eu penso que isto é importante."
      (I think this is important.)
In this case, they have the same meaning.
However, if you want to say that you're thinking about something or someone, you must use "pensar".
      Example:
"Eu estou a pensar em ti." (I'm thinking about you.)
"Eu estou a pensar no meu futuro." (I'm thinking about my future.)
"Achar" can also mean a completely different thing, which is "to find".
      Example:
"Eu achei esta caneta." (I found this pen.)
      Cheers! 👍

Would, por vezes, pode ser traduzido por "havia de" e às vezes só pode ser traduzido por "havia de".
A tradução de "Why would you do that?" por "Porque farias isso?" é possível, mas na maior partes dos contextos ficaria muito melhor traduzir por "Porque havias de fazer isso?"

É preciso avisar que nem sempre o imperfeito pode substituir o condicional. As coisas são bem mais complicadas. Tem de se entender as razões pelas quais se pode substituir e não "ligar o automático".
"Why would you do that?"

That is a hard sentence to say, because it includes IF. Because it's unlikely it will happen (it sounds like you DON'T have the time because you said "had") you would need the imperfect subjunctive here. The full sentence would be: Se tivesse tempo, caminharia até (insert place you want to go). Hope that helps!

I don’t know Portuguese but I’m fluent in French, Spanish and Italian and I find the use of the imperfect quite odd to translate “You should go to...”. But maybe it’s a Portuguese thing. This a classic conditional in the 3 languages I know. Tu devrais aller / Deberías ir / Dovresti andare. Please let me know.
