Just stumbled across your channel because I was looking at ITunes Pro2.0 hearing protection reviews. After watching a couple of your videos I was hooked! I"m now subscribed. I too am a Retiree getting into woodworking as a hobby, and like you I recently built a workshop/garage (24x24). Muddling along, I'll be following and learning from your efforts and endeavors. Thanks for your candor and honesty Don. Rest assured, your objective for why you are sharing and putting in the effort to bring us these videos is greatly appreciated. Enjoy!

I enjoy the honesty of your video and that you are doing it for fun rather than trying to build a career. I'll keep watching. btw - I had a friend back in the day that drank nothing but Moosehead. Nice mirror.

Thank you for your comment. It’s greatly appreciated. My plan is to continue what I’m doing including the honesty. The Moosehead mirror is in honor of one of our basset hound Champions, CH Shoefly’s Royal Moosehead or Moose. He was the foundation sire for our line of bassets and a wonderful boy. We named all our male show dogs after beers and our show girls were named for soft drinks.

Good to see you back, healthy and well. Have not been doing anything myself either. Workshop/studio was made into a fisherman battery charging station since the typhoon. On the road myself with to mini generators, then I got myself C19 last week. Was in hospital for two days only. Hopefully will be back to normal in a week or so. Fiber internet down, and 5g has many towers gone. I made a jig a couple of years ago for grinding the 'Irish Grind' (or Ellsworth). Take care

Pascal, it’s great hearing from you. I’ve been wondering how things are going with you after the typhoon. I’m very sorry to hear that you’ve been sick. You’re the second RUclips friend that I know has had COVID. Take care of yourself and get better. I’m sure it’s going to be quite a while before things in your town get back to normal and even longer to rebuild everything. As I said before people in the Philippines have a lot of spirit and tenacity. If anyone can come back from all that devastation they can.
There are a lot of different ways to make jigs for grinding lathe tools. Back when I bought my lathe I had Christmas gifts to make and had enough cash to get the Wolverine jig system. It may not be the best on the market but it’s working OK for me.
All is fine here. While Pam and I are still being very careful we are trying to get back to as close to normal as we can. We’re fortunate that here vaccines are now easy to get so we’ve had three shots.
      I’ll keep watching for updates.

It’s always great to meet another Mac user. The first computer I bought was an Apple IIc. It was a great computer but small enough to take to work. Apple even made a bag for it. I switched to a Mac when the Macintosh SE came out. I had a bag for it too.

Good to see you back Don. RUclips changed a while back and now they can/will put ads on all channels regardless if they meet the 1000 sub/4000 hours. Anyone not monetized just doesn't get the money.

Just seems crooked. I know it's their servers, their databases, but we put so much into our creations. It doesn't seem right to not get a few scraps before you hit that threshold.

I realize that now. Since it’s their platform and money I guess they can do whatever they want.

Glad to see you're getting some of that revenue. I think it's a little crooked to put ads on if you're not making money off the content you created. I've been working really hard to get my second channel monetized (I hope I'm getting close), just so that I can take the ads off of the gear stool instructions that I made and sold to people. I don't think it's fair that those people should have to watch ads if they bought the plans.
I switched to MacBook in 2019 because windows crashed on me so much that I ripped it out and put up a wall. While I have had issue with my MacBook, it's because I work it so incredibly hard with terabytes of data and multiple processes going on all the time (so much so that I sometimes have to wait for it to catch up with me), as well as it being in my dusty office. I even bought a second MacBook as a backup (well worth every penny).
As for the Awl Challenge, thank you so much for both entering and mentioning it on your channel. I haven't gotten as many responses as I would have loved to have gotten, but the few that have done it have been sold on the idea and have thanked me for the inspiration. I really, truly believe that that awl will have a special place in your shop. I know that because you've done the same thing with your family: wood handles created from beautiful woods make kitchen tools just as magical!
Thanks Don and I'm so incredibly glad that you're safe and still hitting the shop floor. I hope down the road I can be as productive and upbeat as you are. You're an inspiration and I really admire your video work (from one FCPX to another!).

We’ll see if I actually make any money from my channel. As of right now it says I’ve earned a whole $10.60. 😃 I guess I look at RUclips making money on my videos a little differently. As one who remembers using a dial-up modem at 300bps I’m blown away by what can be done now over the Internet. To do all that’s necessary to even store all the videos on RUclips servers takes a lot of money and there’s a lot more costs in addition to that.
Good luck with your second channel. Your intentions for those who have bought your plans is quite generous and thoughtful. An option for now could be to edit in some quick changes to those videos and upload them unmonitored OR start a third channel and upload the video(s) to it that you don’t want to be monetized. If you do that most likely RUclips will not recognize it as the same video and allow an unedited copy. I have the video on our bassets on three of my RUclips channels.
Once my awl is done I’ll be making at least two and possibly three videos on the project. I’ll see if I can stir up some more takers. As for my awl, if it turns out the way I hope it does I’ll make a Hager and put it on my tool wall. I’m actually thinking I want to make one or two more, one for my lathe cabinet and another for my drill press cabinet. That would put them in places where they are needed.
I go through phases like just about every other woodworker I know. While shop time is a lot of fun and I enjoy it sometimes I just don’t want to go out there. There are times when it’s not fun or I’ve run into a problem I need to solve so I stay away for a while. Since I also enjoy editing video that’s what I choose to do instead.
Oh, I’ve only tried out FCPX. I loved it but spent the cash on a router instead. It’s something I plan to get with my new Mac. For now I mostly use iMovie to edit the video. For most of the text and “special effects” I use Keynote that came with my Mac. While it was made originally for live presentations Keynote can save slides as video files. It’s a magical program. There are some great tutorials on RUclips showing how to use Keynote in videos. I’ve enjoyed expanding on what I learned from them. I also use Filmora for specific editing tasks and am expanding on them as well. When I did the round PIP showing me explaining that I’m trying Shorts I used Filmora for that.
It’s great to chat. Today I’ll be turning the awl handle. Hopefully it will turn out OK.
