Looks great Mike and for sure it was a good challenge.
It can be very creepy turning something big and out of round.
Years ago in the begining of my career as a wood patternmaker I was given a job that involved turning a 6 foot diameter that ended up 3 feet deep.
That is a very creepy feeling but I loved it and always looked forward to turning big things. The largest ended up to be almost 8 foot in diameter.
They were round but still done with hand tools and a floor rest.
About the same feeling as an 18 inch diameter that is now where near round like you just turned.
    Great job!
    Gary

Thanks so much Gary, and wow, that sounds incredible!!! I have no history of woodwork of any kind apart from the office project here and there. My wife bought me a small lathe 3 1/2 years ago and it sort of escalated from there. Take care and I look forward to your next project 😊

For someone who loved woodworking being a patternmaker was a perfect job.

Every time you start a piece of such odd shape I learn a bit more about your craft. I do love how you embrace the bark areas that remain as you shape the piece. I have only been following you a short time catching up on your old videos, but now have a deep desire to have the honor of owning one of your creations- which is a bit of a folly since I am over 70 and should be parring down my possessions, not adding to…but I find joy in things of deep beauty and products of love of a craft.

Another lovely piece, Mike. Even though I’m never getting a lathe, I enjoy learning about this work. I didn’t know how to sharpen blades. I didn’t know you had to realign the two parts, I didn’t know about end grain, and burls. I’m loving this. I don’t imagine I’ll use this knowledge, but I have a much greater appreciation, now, for turned pieces. You’re a good teacher. I never knew cherry was so light. My mother had some pieces of cherry furniture, but it was stained a much darker color. Maybe that was just the style then. Anyway, another fun video.

Hello Mike. My goodness, that one fought you all the way. But it was well worth the trials and tribulations. It really is exquisite. Your comment about sarcasm amused me. My lovely old dad used to say that sarcasm was the lowest form of wit. Then a moment later would add “ But one suits one’s wit to one’s company.” And usually wink extravagantly at that point. But I am pleased you have a second piece of this lovely wood to turn. Are you really only going to make a “basic bowl” from such a treasure - or are you going to let it stretch your talent even more - within the scope of health and safety of course! No accidents, please! Have a great week.

I never had much success with Milliput and ca glue can be messy and quite brittle. What I now use is 5 minute resin mixed with a tiny drop of mica powder of the desired colour. It works really well and is very strong. I love cherry too but flipping heck, does it like to crack. Lovely job Mike.

Very nice bowl. Cherry wood has an understated elegance. Certainly, seemed a challenge to turn, but you were up to the job and as you say you learned new skills. It does resemble a tractor seat:) Believe it would look right at home as the centerpiece on a white or dusky rose linen tablecloth

Because you've so well conditioned me to slow motion being used to show Bad Things, my heart skipped a beat when there was that little segment of slow-mo during the second sanding montage...
Piece came out beautiful, though. I might not be altogether impartial, though; cherry is just about my favorite wood to work with.

A challenging journey Mike, with a beautiful result at the end. The start was intense, and I was hoping that you could turn it safely in what looked like an awkward position. These last two platters (or platter and fruit bowl 😀) are some of my favorite pieces. Glad you were able to turn it safely and it "turned" out amazing at the end.

"Take on the challenge and see it through to the end" - wise advice for Life, let alone a cherry crotch piece! Well Done, Mike, it looks to be another superb bowl - thank you for sharing. PS I think on balance I agree with your thought of cutting a round blank from the other piece - you have completed the harder challenge now, try a different style next time 🙂

I am currently working on a FOG piece of cherry. It has some very nasty cracks that I actually like to work with, but it is a little too risky to continue right now. I’ll wait a week or so checking movement in the piece. Once I am satisfied it has achieved equilibrium I’ll fill in the gaps with a black epoxy, and continue turning it.
I like your approach and “can do” (with appropriate caution) attitude. Keep them coming! Always a joy to watch.
