@@vanshkukreja5575 bruh! Give me a break! I was referring to the previous years list 😂 he started it in 2020. We thought it was a one time thing. so, when I saw this, got excited that he was making it into a series. When I said I love this I didn't mean this "video", I meant this "series". I wouldn't have explained so much but seems like you have the habit of jumping to conclusions with half information so yeah... Edit: now you might think how do I know this is a series... he literally named them "The Best Laptops - 2020 Picks!" And "The Best Laptops - 2021 Picks!" So we are hoping for 2022 picks, 2023 picks, 2024 picks..... and so on. I hope you get it at least after this much of breaking it down.

can't believe you put the dash f15 immediately in the S tier because it was beautiful and then at the end took a logical re-evaluation and moved it down to the bottom lmao
As someone who bought the 2020 version of the Nitro 5, it makes me really happy to see Dave giving it the credit it deserves. Because like he said, I had just graduated from high school at the time and my old laptop had broken down, and so I was able to convince my parents to get me the Nitro 5 since it was such a good laptop for the $670 I paid for it. 1 year later and it still runs just as great. Plus the performance has gone up a lot too since I upgraded to dual-channel memory
You can tell Dave takes way more consideration into the aesthetic of the product as well as the fan noise compared to it's performance. If you can make a really clean and sleak design while it's quiet and performs decent then you're on top of the list. And I agree. Sometimes in the pursuit of performance we neglect other crucial features along the way.
His opinion is a very big factor in his tier list. For the looks, many enthusiasts and casual folks value the looks. For the fan noise, some value it. Some don't. For the performance, we have different uses. Some use the Adobe suite a lot. Some play games a lot. At the end of the day our wants and needs differ so our tier lists differ. That's why he didn't question those who
I bought a Legion 5 based on Dave's review and it has not disappointed, one of the best budget laptops I have even owned. Thank you Dave. We appreciate your honesty always.
Budget lol in my country ALL of the Legion line are over $1000 that can't be budget. I love the looks though not sure about some models here in my region tends to have only 8 GB of RAM yet it stil over $1000 and that's an insult to Legion products they overpriced it.
@@jjlm7345 I'm looking for Legion 5 i7-12700H 16GB DDR5 4800 RAM and RTX 3060 but its right around $1500 mark and that's well out of my budget. Might as well just go for broke for MSI Raider GE66 with i7-12700H RTX 3070Ti instead even if the looks is a bit too edgy for my taste.
I really wish Dave just gives a one liner long term review of every laptop he includes in this list. People really like to know how the laptop is performing after one year.
I mean makes sense since S tier entails the absolute best and F the absolute worst, and there can only be a few of those. The rest all fall in the middle.
Bro, I used to follow you back in 2016-17. It's so good to see you have almost 4 million subs. I always dreamed of seeing you get what you deserve and more! I love you bro! Keep making kickass vids❤️🔥
This year’s Zephyrus G14 deserves an A, the 1440p screen has much better response time and refresh rates, the performance is great for a 14’ at that price. Thermals have also been improved
I really don't get why people are acting G14 isn't one of the best anymore. For my uses mostly plugged into an external monitor, to have with a Ryzen 9 5900HS, and Nvidia 3060 at $1,350 (black friday prices), I really did not find a better price to performance in my options.
Yes, but there is a little problem here. The problem is that many were still on PCIe 3.0 generation, while Blade 14 had PCIe 4.0 and that i was angry it got to A tier.
Doing architectural modeling on M16 with the screen is really satisfying, it does get loud, but the power it packs in such a mobile device is just unrivaled. The RTX sticker peeled off by itself tho ;(
I bought the G15 this year. Love it. FN + F6 for print screen. I am a software developer and frequently need screenshots as well. Also, if you are a dev, FN + up/down for page up/down and FN + left/right for home/end. Super useful for quickly navigating around a code file.
@@SystemBot Doesn't some of Asus' laptops have a Number Pad built into the track pad?? I Iove the Number Pad but I'd gladly take a digital one in the track pad if it meant a more spaced out keyboard.
wow my other comment got removed.. once again, it depends on the laptop. I'm using a 15" laptop with a numpad, there's a ton of space on the keyboard. You shouldn't even be having any trouble or "perfect distance" typing at this size unless you have fat af fingers. As a dev myself, having easy access to the home and end key is very helpful when coding. I'm using a Dell G3 3579 laptop btw, if you wanna google what the keyboard looks like.
Dave doesn't seem to have reviewed too many laptops this year so I'm not going to be too hopeful for a their list. Jarrods Tech with the tier list and awards though was great.
Currently have been running grey G15 for about two months since I purchased it. Such a beast in terms of performance. That also can be almost completely silent. And that also can run for pretty long on battery. Also looove the keyboard and trackpad. Almost perfect device for me, but definitely flawed, no doubt Love you, Dave! Your style of channel is fabulous!
Why can't asus add the taller screen and web cam of the m15. It's honestly stupid. Imagine having all the components to make a masterpiece and then screw it up so badly.
Loving my Zephyrus G15. It's been really great for uni and playing games. Also, I feel like both of the MacBooks should be bumped up a tier. They're expensive, but nothing else has the battery life + the performance in the same package. I also think that the Zephyrus G14 should be at least an A. The major complaint that Dave had (the slow screen) was fixed in the 2021 model.
Would agree with the placement of the new MacBook Pros. On technical achievements alone, they are above and beyond S Tier, but they are also very niche devices with prohibitively high price tags, unlike the Legion 5 and G15 which offer much better value.
True but cost double just to have a smaller product. Battery life and performance are great. However it can't do basic virtualization due to the M1, that alone has cost Apple my money.
An all rounder Laptop tier list would be much appreciated. Like for Gaming, Work, Video editing, long lasting etc. Almost a Macbook pro alternative for windows is what I am looking for but with respected gaming abilities.
I bought the G14 this year and I would make the case for A tier for two reasons. 1. The QHD 120hz model does not have the ghosting issues that the FHD 2020 model had last year. 2. It has a Print Screen button.
I have a G14 as well. My only issue is how hot the CPU runs at times. 95 degrees to 98 degrees C at times. It doesn't reduce performance, just seems excessive. I also said A tier
I 100% agree with the treatment the Dell XPS got. Extremely lazy work from Dell, and I’ve been a fan of that lineup for years. Would’ve loved to see where you would have put the Surface Laptop Studio, but I guess it would’ve been an “F” because of the quad-core chip !
Surface is more like a notebook .. a Quad-Core Processor is completely fine with it .. it's not acceptable for a gaming laptop to have such a weak processor
@@ChaosMind95 it games decently with a 3050 ti. Also my i7-7700k (quad core) runs games great with my 1070. I'm on a desktop though not a laptop so I have access to watercooling
I just got an ABSOLUTE steal deal on a stock clearance on Lenovo Legion 5 with RTX 2060, Ryzen 7 4800h, 16GB RAM for 700$ brand new. This is my first laptop ever and i am SO happy with my purchase!
I think for the most part it's a good list. The Razer Blade 14 is a great machine, but razer has some serious quality control/support issues they need to work out (blade 15 owner, webcam/windows hello died just after warranty and it's not fixable without a full screen replacement and you can't even get parts to do that). I also think the macbooks probably deserve a separate category. They're great devices for what they are, technical marvels in some ways (the screens are basically first of their kind, as are the chips and the efficiency that comes with it) but of course compared to the laptops in this list they're very expensive and not well suited to gaming. For creative workloads though, they really shine and have performance outpacing a lot of desktop systems. I get how it's hard to rank them in a list of windows laptops though. A mac either works for you or doesn't, and if it doesn't it doesn't matter how "good" it is.
i mean the thing iis yeah if xcode and final cut is your workflow these things absolutely crush, but its such a niche device that personally an "a" rank is very accurate given the ridiculous cost. S ranked laptops are for laptops are realistically great for most users, and while the macbook pro is definitely a "great" device, its price tag solely puts it out of "realistic" tier. This list isn't the best performing laptops, its about the best laptops overall, and price plays a major factor in it. If it was even just 800 dollars cheaper, i could very well see it as being laptop of the decade.
I do agree on macbooks should be on a separate category. However I do not agree that their screens are unique. It sounds unique for the use of Mini LED and stuff, but I do feel that the Aero 15 OLED screen is better than the new macbook pro 14/16 . In the past, macbooks have a distinct advantage in their display over any Windows laptops, things have changed in since these 2~3 years. Windows laptops have gotten alot better with their screens.
@@fleurdewin7958 My razer had/has the OLED screen, and in some ways image quality is superior on the OLED, but you also have 120hz on the apple displays and no risk of burn in, which isn't nothing.
The g15 Advantage definitely deserved atleast an A tier for its price to performance also the 1440p panel had the best colour accuracy, it also has better battery than any other on the tier list. It should sit along side the legions imo
I dunno mate. My advantage edition has been buggy since the day I bought it. Random restarts and BSOD''s. I'm not the only one with these issues. You can find lots of users on reddit and forums regarding the issues with the advantage edition. Swapped it with a legion 5 pro. Both the ROG and Legion 5 pro had 1xr16 rams though.
I love my G15 AMD. It's honestly a great device as I lean heavy on gaming. I had Legion 5 but didn't sit right with me so I turned to G15 and I am very happy with the change.
Dave's speaking facts Dell has been modelling their Alienware series based on trends of the industry, instead they should not worry about the thickness of their device and design all their Alienware series laptops like they did 2-3 years back. Just look at Lenovo man they don't give a shit about what their rivals are doing and continue to make their laptops just as thick as before or maybe even thicker which allows them great cooling and performance. Just want all these manufacturers to understand that making their devices thinner and thinner every year isn't the solution. All in all great video by Dave, enjoyed it thoroughly!
The x15 is actually praised by reviewers. It performs well, like it outperforms thicker laptops, and Alienware uses 4 fans where other mf use 2. The only ones not liking it are RUclipsrs for some reason. It is expensive but it should probably be an a on the tier list
Starting to feel really good about my Legion 5 purchase. While waiting for it in the mail i haven't seen one bad review and this is the second superb rating.
I have the Legion 7 3080, definitely has a premium pricetag, but I think it's also the closest to a flawless laptop that you can currently buy. I personally think it's S tier even with the price, but I definitely think your list is totally fair. Nicely done as usual 👌
I got the same, I had read alot of nightmare comments about not being able to turn off RGB and having to use horrible iCue software. You just press Fn + Spacebar until you find the static RGB mode, then Fn + Arrow Down and you can just turn it off completely. Took 10 seconds. Great laptop, looks ultra clean with RGB turned off, and can also look as spacey as you like. Surprisingly cool and quiet with that amount of horsepower
Dave you nailed it. I have tested several of the laptops in this chart, and I still have my Zephyrus G15 which I use daily. I think it is the best all around laptop of the year. I think the Legion 5 is the more budget friendly number 1 of the year as well.
In summer I was picking a new device: Zephyrus G15 or Zephyrus M16. I'm a graphic and motion designer, with some video editing gigs from time to time. I went with the M16. Brighter and bigger screen in same body, great color accuracy, Intel is better for Premiere, 3060 is all I need for my work related tasks and for my daily gaming it can run every AAA game even if it isn't with the highest settings. Also, I really love that gorgeous black color. I use it as my main machine working at home, always using a headset so I don't really mind that it doesn't have as good of a battery and it's louder than the G15. Till now, I'm really happy with my choice. Great laptop.
@@abdullaabdulla8397 It gets hot. Intel i9 goes up to ~80 on heavy load. Is actually louder than Zephyrus g15, but it's not a problem for me. I'd undervolted the cpu by -50 and thermals had improve (~70), feels better on hands and runs smoother over time. Fan noise is not a problem for me cause I'm always using headset, but it could get loud, around 48db
Your end-of-year 2022 list, you should not only place the laptops in tiers, but in addition order the laptops in each individual tier from best to worst (left to right). ✌️
Everything else about the ASUS G14 is so good I feel like it maybe deserved an A. The pixel response time on my 144hz 1080p could be better, but it's not awful and it's amazing how clean and well-built this laptop is for the price.
I find it so satisfying to see Lenovo Legion finally getting credit where credit is due. That brand was slept on way too much compared to the overpriced Alienware devices and hit or miss ASUS ROG products. Can't wait for 2022.
Idk I guess sive been around to many laptop nerds cuz the legion 5 is the device I get shoved down my throat all the time lol I don't think it's slept on at all
I really appreciate that you included visuals of the laptops and what features you were referring to 😌 I can always count on you to factor in aesthetics which I always look for in a laptop
I just ordered the Legion 7 Gen 6 16" - 32GB with AMD Ryzen 7 and RTX 3060 for USD $1700 (includes tax). Cyber Monday deal gave me $360 discount + $100 off for 1st time customer at Lenovo site. Delivery time is 4 mos+ but see some buyers get it in one month or so. Overall, not bad of a deal compared to similar specs out there. Plus I was leaning towards Dell XPS 15 but it's much more expensive so I made a good decision. I can't wait!! 😃
You will not regret this decision my friend. I chose Legion 7 as well over the 5... Where I live the price was almost the same... So obviously I choose the 7... It has vapor chamber, better keyboard and mousepad, customizable RGB, the inside battery is replaceable anddd I don't remember what else.. Also, it looks more professional looking. Anyways, enjoy legion brother
same thing. I was leaning on the dell xps 15 for the longest time cuz of the nice screen, build and thunderbolt. however the eternal were heavily lacking for the price so I got the legion 7i gen 6 16gb 3070 for £1700 with black friday ecoupon discount of £400+. should ship in 2-3 weeks
Ordered the Omen 17 with 32gb ram, 1440p display and 1tb SSD and RTX 3070 140w i7 11800h for 1765 including tax, will have it by January 1 latest, estimated to be with me by December 15 but I'm looking and giving longer date because it's during winter season
Something I kinda wish you would do is ranking between tiers; I've seen a lot of tier lists do a "high C/low B" kind of ranking. The better ones in each tier end up being closer to the letter and things can be put between others, rather than just adding to the different tiers. An example being if the Nitro 5 was better than the MacBook Pro 16 you'd put the Nitro to the left of it.
Hey Dave long-time sub fan here but I can't help but disagree on the Legion 5 Pro being an A-Tier notebook. The trackpad has a designated button to be deactivated swiftly so I always have it switched off when I game. Second, the Stingray White version which I chose looks absolutely stellar with the ice-blue lighting. Absolutely blown away by this laptop! Keep up the great content and much love from Austria.
It's ok, i have L5iP white edition. one thing for sure, Legion laptops are amazing, you never get wrong with Legion, or Lenovo for whole products. Many people hate Y logo on Pro, but Lenovo want to add classic version look on it. I hate it too at first, but now kinda ok.
@@matt_arnold Not at all, tbh. It's my first Lenovo and I got used to the overall typing experience fairly quickly. I wouldn't even recognize that the trackpad is that far left because it being larger is advantageous for everyday use and a non-factor during gaming thanks to that switch.
I think the Rog Strix Advanced is A tier (I know you were vascilating between A and B). One of the hidden things of the AMD version is just how much power the machine holds while on battery. It's still around 80% as powerful vs being plugged in. Considering most laptops throttle 50 to 70% while on battery, I think that's pretty amazing.
Got Asus ROG Strix G17 2021 with R9+3060 last July, after 5 months using it felt worth for gaming, streaming and editing stuff. Highly recommended laptop.
the thing is this: repairability will never be as big of a deal. Most people are able to use whatever device that are using for years without needing to repair it. So better performance, better value, better functionality, etc will always outweigh repairability for most.
I'm looking at the Blade 15 for a gamer and we went to the Razer Store Thursday and looked at it and it's a great machine. They had a gaming room in the back loaded up with games and you (mouse, keyboard, headset stations) could test out your favorite games on four of their models. I was impressed with the thermals (warm but not hot) and fan noise (it was there but not too bad). I have a MacBook Pro 16 and it's a fantastic device in terms of battery life and how cool it runs. The fan speed is 0 the vast majority of the time for me. I'm not a gamer but I make my living using the laptop so cost wasn't an issue. You can upgrade the RAM in the Blade 15 yourself, up to 64 GB of RAM and it has an open NVMe SSD slot so it's upgradeable. I think that you can replace the battery pretty easily too. I didn't see the Blade 15 or 17 mentioned here so I'll look around at other reviews. We currently have an Asus and it has a really annoying firmware bug where the fan runs full speed all the time. It is really loud and really annoying. I'm shocked that Asus didn't fix this. I can't trust a vendor with poor tech support.
My girlfriend got curious about that gaming stuff and started to play games like Minecraft and some horror games like Dead by Daylight or Phasmophobia. She was always playing on my Laptop which became an issue as she was playing more and more. One morning she said '' let's go to Best Buy, I want my own.'' She ended up with a Nitro 5 ! She never add any issue with it and enjoys it a lot. We now play a ton of co-op games together like Castle Crashers, The Forest, Icarus and what not. Nothing to complain about the Nitro 5, although I'm not sure she could play COD or stuff like that with it.
I think my AMD advantage is S Tier for me..the performance to price ratio is amazing. That is the thing we all bought laptops for different purposes. I got performance for a discount price while others got performance for a premium. These lists are personal preference so no one should be butt hurt and hell I am glad mine was mid tier lol. Just proves my point on why I bought it. It was good enough to make a list!
Just got a Zephyrus G15 this year and Ive loved it! Insane performance and good looks for the price. The build quality is solid but the finish for the black one which I have scrapes off very easily. Already got spots around the bottom where the finish scraped off showing the metal underneath. Not really a big issue just an annoyance.
@@DoozyyTV I have it permanetly on turbo mode with head phones on a never notice it. I also dont do 4k since the screen is 1440p. All I can say is that its quieter than my last laptop, a Acer Nitro 5 (2019).
Same got one for college in august this year and 0 issues so far runs literally everything mix of high-ultra settings. I haven’t noticed any scraping with the finish for mine though. Loving it so far
I got the G15 from 2020 and was absolutely disappointed. Might have gotten a bad unit but it could not run the games as advertised. Never buying Asus again, I felt absolutely scammed. Customer support was trash as well, would not take responsibility even though it was still under warranty.
Picked up a Strix Scar G17 with 3070 last year. Lots of issues with the keyboard light software. Pretty expensive vs other laptops. But the keyboard is rock solid and the speakers are surprisingly good for a laptop.
The Alienware X15, sure it could be thicker but with the super sharp QHD screen it's a really nice slim portable bit of kit with great chassis build quality. I have the RTX3070 model and got a Time Spy score of 10151 without tinkering. That's pretty good imo for such a slim portable laptop.
I like how Jarrod (from Jarrod's Tech) predicted in his Laptop ranking that Dave is going to put the Zephyrus G15 to S-Tier lol (video at 14:54 in his rankings)
Great review, Dave. This is shaping up to be a fun holiday tradition if you decide to continue these reviews in years-to-come. It was your initial review of the 2020 HP Omen 15 and the fact that it received a rating of S-Tier that encouraged me to make that my laptop purchase last winter -- something that doesn't happen often. I agree that HP took a lazier approach by only upgrading the chip, but the laptop is still great despite no physical upgrades (aside from the notches placed to help with screen-flex). I think the 2021 HP Omen 15 should be an A-Tier since it is only the second year of production after their complete overhaul. Thank you for the content you create!
agree as well. im a victim of Dave that I bought the Omen 15 early this year. great price to spec ratio for rtx 3060, and the cooling system is benchmark. been doing premier pro, ai, ps and gaming and been just a blast so far. should been an A-tier for 2021.
Hey Dave, I bought the Razer Blade 14 after your review earlier in the year. It’s the best Windows laptop I’ve ever owned (and that’s a long list). Thanks for all the awesome videos this year, look forward to more in 2022.
@@arktiix in the first month of use - yes. But gaming laptop batteries degrade quickly. My 4 year old Alienware loses 100% battery in around 30 minutes of doing nothing.
I agree with that design point you mentioned for Legion 5 pro compared to Legion 5 but you just missed that gorgeous display on it! arguably the best gaming display existed! perfect resolution, 16 by 10 aspect ratio, and 165hz refresh rate! I think that display compensates for the intentional design flaw and it has a better build quality compared to Legion 5 also! so legion 5 pro is an "S" tier!
Agree. Do you have an issue for the trackpad? there was one time i forgot my mouse and using trackpad on legion 5 pro a whole day and its pretty amazing how my palm that touch the trackpad does not effect the cursor movement and mouse click. Since Dave also mention this trackpad issue when reviewing 5 pro makes me wonder how long does he try using his legion 5 pro before reviewing it.
Surprised the Rog X13 Flow didn't make the list- really enjoyed your review on it and almost settled on it being my next buy- Feel like it's aesthetic suits my needs perfectly, just curious as to how it stands against others this year
Got my legion 5 pro 3 days ago , i got this instead of g15 because i was scared about the qc problems of g15 . 16:10 is nice i was used to 16:9 but 16:10 changed my perspective it covered more space while browsing and the qhd display and 500 nits brightness is delight but still when you watch movies from Netflix and some games have cut on top and bottom of screen which is little bit frustrating, but yeah no laptop is perfect.
Not really. The Zephyrus g15 has better keyboard, trackpad, speakers, thermals, battery, software, quiet mode. Not to mention the charging brick is heavy af. When hook up to an external monitor the 100w GPU performs exactly the same as the 140w in the legion 5 pro. If you really need gaming on the go and 16:10 aspect ratio then legion 5 pro is a better choice but overall even with better design the g15 is a better package overall
@@NamTran-xc2ip he literally said “my” lol, plus the m16 gets already extremely good thermals lol, pretty sure it’s the same device except for the screen, battery life and cpu
I switched from the 2018 Razer Blade 15 to this year's Razer Blade 14. The new laptop is objectively better, but I do miss the bigger screen. It's also unfortunate that it doesn't have thunderbolt any more.
Nice list, harsh on the MacBook 16 though, the 14 gets the same performance at the cost of battery life, fan noise and heat. Not a fair comparison when there are trade offs.
It’s just crazy he labels MacBook pros this year not in the top list. You get what you pay for… low fan noise, no throttling and battery life with a new chip in a laptop. 🤦🏽♂️ I agree with Dave with most stuff but the new MacBooks are next level and definitely original this year
@@GlobalWave1 I think the new macbooks this year are like at most a tier products. a pro product with unreplaceable storage? bro... they already have an nvme controller for their ssds, just give us an m.2 slot to put our own storage in.
@@placeholder-dk I'm talking about peak performance which I assume dave is too because othewise the comparison would be pointless since both machines are quiet and cool to touch doing normal stuff. But the 14 is only able to keep up with the peak performance of the 16 by getting hotter and louder(it's still cooler and quieter than other laptops of course just not as quiet and cool as the 16). And that's before mentioning battery performance. If you're going to judge objectively, you must acknowledge the trade offs which dave failed to do.
Lol this was really the most funny tier list ever 😂, I didn't even get a single reasoning out of your tiering and I didn't expect this from your channel
Good list. Harsh on the MacBook Pro 16 though. Definitely a expensive product, not much more than a XPS 17 though and you certainly get the tech and quality you pay pay for. And if any laptops sent a wake-up call to all laptop manufacturers it's the M1 Macbooks this this year.
It's a great product but given how expensive it is on top of a much more limited operating system, for a lot of people that don't have much use for that extra productivity processing power, it doesn't make much sense to buy that given its price.
@@bruhder5854 With iPadOS I couldn't agree more. Bought a ipad last year and sold it in a month. But curious why you say MacOS is limited? Is it because a lack of games?
@@bruhder5854 but the list isn't about price to performance for people who don't need more performance. If it was about that I would recommend an M1 air, or something similar. But this is about tier listing laptops for how they are and if they are good, with price maybe slightly taken into consideration. That also doesn't relate to the video much because Dave ranked a G15 higher, which has more performance while costing more (the top end 3080 model).
@rezargamer I have been a windows and android user my whole life and because of work that won't change. I now also have a MacBook Pro 16 for a bit. I am not using a single Apple specific application so not sure how MacOS locks you in? I get the argument if you use iOS. But MacOS is pretty open? And in many ways have more features to help me stay private on the web than windows does that I quite appreciate. I downloaded all the apps I need direct from website's same as windows. Use all the same Apps and services ad on my Windows laptop. And that will never change ad I need to use all platforms. So curious about your experiences? How did using MacOS lock you in?
I agree with the legion 5 being more desirable than the 5pro and 7. It's an obscene value when you catch sales. With no real compromises. The weight is manageable, the cooling is phenomenal, it has a mux switch, good build quality, good screen when you get the 165hz version/144hz version. Just no real compromises and good pricing. Intelligently cut corners.
...yes but ryzen 5 is kind of outdate, gaming wise. If they had at least a ryzen 7 model, I would have bought it in an instant. But here, we have only the ryzen 5 model, which it sucks.
Ryzen 5 chips are shit compared to i7 11800H. Legion 5 would be more desirable if that 15,6" screen was at least 1440p. Yes, its cheaper and GPUs are identical to Pro. But wtf is the point of 3070 on a 1080p screen? Literally throwing extra power out the window, unless you get an external monitor but then it will cost more.
@@SuperFlawless2010 there are games that absolutely smash that 3070 even at 1080p like halo infinite and cyberpunk. While both are definitely playable, 1080p ultra Halo is like 80 fps.
I was somewhat disappointed that thinkpads couldn’t make their way to this list, they have done it so much better this year with all new AMD and stuff !!🥲🥲 But as always the list is awesome!!😁
Your Victus was my Razerblade this year. Bought 2, all with issues on 2nd screen plugging regardless of cable and monitor... ended up buying a Zephyrus G15 :) Glad I did!
Imma say something very controversial, but the F15 is a decent device, because i got the RTX 3060 version at best buy open boxed for 1000 dollars. It is affordable, lightweight and has a great, sleek design. Sure the 4 core processor isn't great, but it still plays games quite well with very playable framerates.
You are the third person I have seen rate the Legion 5 as an S-Tier so I guess I should look into builds of that. My other choice is the Omen 15 mainly because I do like the minimal aesthetic the shell has, though I would get a skin for it for an alternate color.
The Legion 5 Pro is also an S-tier; Dave did a very poor review of it. It really was the model to beat for upper-mid-range gaming laptops, while the Legion 5 (non-pro) took that spot for mid-range.
I returned my Omen 15 for the Legion 5 17". Best decision of my life, night and day difference. Fan noise on Omen was super disturbing to me and I had other minor issues, the Legion is by far the best laptop I've ever used. I connect it to a second monitor and use it as a pc, barely notice any difference from my 2080ti pc back home.
So sad the g14 wasn't at least an A-Tier, the money saved on buying one of these on sale can easily buy you an external monitor and webcam if that's what you needed or ultimate saved you a ton of money while still getting almost or same performance as those in the A-tier/S-tier
That's exactly how I use my G14. And since you can connect the monitor directly to a GeForce through DP 1.4, I am playing in 1440p now and it still works flawlessly. Even RDR 2 on ultra settings and in the middle of a snow storm never drops below 30 fps ;-)
@@TheMacius99 exactly I run the 1660ti maxq variant with a second monitor and it runs game as good as a 3600x+1660 for almost half the price. Plus the laptop is small enough to carry around and I can go to class without my charger and still have over 30% after a Long day
Putting the GE76 Raider as a C is crazy. The fans can get loud if you are running them at max but almost every game out there won't get you close to max. The layout is amazing, the keyboard is the best out there and if you upgrade the thermals and add pads you will be in heaven. Not to mention a 3080, i9 and every other top of the line part you could hope for in a gaming laptop, it's literally worth every penny.
@@samgoff5289 Not even close. The top of the line Legion 7 is $400 cheaper because it is a 16" display and not 17.3" like the MSI. You are already spending close to 3k, why go smaller?
What price would you say is fair for the MacBooks? I’m curious. We all agree they are expensive but, their Windows counterparts don’t do it the same way and even though they’re cheaper they are still expensive machines. So what should the price be for the new 16 inch Mac to be S tier?
I'm super happy with my 3050ti version. Has a nice optional expansion with egpu if you want to hybrid it as a desktop. Definitely worth a mention as the most powerful 2 in 1 by a long shot, even if the screen is kinda bad for gaming (high g2g response)
@@naityapatel4827 I agree; WTF happened to Dave!? Since he made the new studio, he doesn't seem like himself... I hope he does better reviews in the future, because his reviews were trash this year.
I'm not even looking for a laptop, but I'm still watching because I love your videos, Dave! Actually, you were the one who convinced me, a lifelong Windows user, to buy the 2020 M1 Macbook. I absolutely adore it, so thank you! Keep up the great work!
The dash f15 might have those 4 core Intel chips which sucks for the 3060 and 3070 versions, but I bought one, and I think it matched with the 3050ti really nicely.
I think the 3050 and the 3050ti is alright but a 4 GB graphic card just won't cut it anymore anything less than 6 on a laptop is not future proof plus the 3050 ti is just not as good on DLSS and ray tracing

Some don't. This year’s Zephyrus G14 deserves an A, the 1440p screen has much better response time and refresh rates, the performance is great for a 14’ at that price. Thermals have also been improved
Definitely! The 1440p screen is great and having 32gb of memory is super useful as a video editor.

I bought the G15 this year. Love it. FN + F6 for print screen. I am a software developer and frequently need screenshots as well. Also, if you are a dev, FN + up/down for page up/down and FN + left/right for home/end. Super useful for quickly navigating around a code file.

Nice video on your channel 😅
I do agree on macbooks should be on a separate category. However I do not agree that their screens are unique. It sounds unique for the use of Mini LED and stuff, but I do feel that the Aero 15 OLED screen is better than the new macbook pro 14/16 . In the past, macbooks have a distinct advantage in their display over any Windows laptops, things have changed in since these 2~3 years. Windows laptops have gotten alot better with their screens.

yep., just got mine delivered the other week. it was 2139 with the 3080 so i got a great deal on it
I got the same, I had read alot of nightmare comments about not being able to turn off RGB and having to use horrible iCue software.

@@regularturds7242 of course. Mini led is the next big thing for gaming laptop since OLED with high refresh rate would absoluteky kill your wallet
Dave you nailed it. I have tested several of the laptops in this chart, and I still have my Zephyrus G15 which I use daily. I think it is the best all around laptop of the year. I think the Legion 5 is the more budget friendly number 1 of the year as well.
Being a subscriber of Dave2D and watching this on my new Legion 5.
Do this more often please. Tier list videos are by far the best “to the point” videos.
You must watch jarrod's tech
Great laptop.
many people are complaining about its fan noise and temperature .have you had any difficulties with those problems?
Asus G14 FOR S TIER!!
@@JustHitsu for sure solid performer
You should have opted for the QHD 120hz version. I bought that and I have no regrets
The display sucks on the G14 and it runs hot and loud. I immediately returned it for that reason.
The way they make G15 better overshadow G14 in terms of overall package. Also the 3060 G14 cost almost the same as 3060 G15
I find it so satisfying to see Lenovo Legion finally getting credit where credit is due. That brand was slept on way too much compared to the overpriced Alienware devices and hit or miss ASUS ROG products. Can't wait for 2022.

Oh, very good suggestion.
Currently using a TUF dash F15 and I’m loving it but I’m afraid of the future.
How do you find the trackpad position for general typing use? Is it awkward being so far left?
@@matt_arnold Not at all, tbh. It's my first Lenovo and I got used to the overall typing experience fairly quickly. I wouldn't even recognize that the trackpad is that far left because it being larger is advantageous for everyday use and a non-factor during gaming thanks to that switch.
where is the best place to buy a LEGION 5 pro?
I think the Rog Strix Advanced is A tier (I know you were vascilating between A and B). One of the hidden things of the AMD version is just how much power the machine holds while on battery. It's still around 80% as powerful vs being plugged in. Considering most laptops throttle 50 to 70% while on battery, I think that's pretty amazing.
It isn't ROG, it's AMD CPU 5000 series. All AMD laptops are really powerful even in battery mode. And most of the tier are AMD too.

What about the framework? That was the most innovative laptop this year
@Joe ok
the thing is this: repairability will never be as big of a deal. Most people are able to use whatever device that are using for years without needing to repair it. So better performance, better value, better functionality, etc will always outweigh repairability for most.
@@haomingli6175 Beeing able to decide what ports my device has is pretty functional in my opinion

How much noise does it make when watching 4k content in 4k resolution?
I also just got a nothing this year! Because I’m poor

Asus TUF Dash 15, white, teal backlight keyboard color, S TIER! (YES~ I concur!)
This is dope because you get a nice overview
I like how Jarrod (from Jarrod's Tech) predicted in his Laptop ranking that Dave is going to put the Zephyrus G15 to S-Tier lol (video at 14:54 in his rankings)

Hahaha exactly!
Just bought the Asus ZenBook Duo, loving it, if you need a a second screen it's great, wonder where it would be on the list since it's more affordable

If only the Asus ROG M16 had an AMD chip variation, that would have deserved an S tier.
For sure. It has webcam and thinner bezels all around
If the Legion 5 Pro had a better design, it deserves to be in a new tier above S.
Zephyrus M16 was my favourite thin and light gaming laptop.

Nice list, harsh on the MacBook 16 though, the 14 gets the same performance at the cost of battery life, fan noise and heat. Not a fair comparison when there are trade offs.
interesting you say that cause been using the 14 with absolutely 0 fan noise and heat issues
It’s just crazy he labels MacBook pros this year not in the top list. You get what you pay for… low fan noise, no throttling and battery life with a new chip in a laptop. 🤦🏽♂️

And that's before mentioning battery performance. If you're going to judge objectively, you must acknowledge the trade offs which dave failed to do.

Agree with how you placed the Legions. Got a fully decked 7, and it is truly excellent.
He placed that in S tier category what else do you want?
So happy to see my 5 pro get A tier, some guy told me the thermals were bad, I knew he was saying bs after I saw ur review of it
So sad the g14 wasn't at least an A-Tier, the money saved on buying one of these on sale can easily buy you an external monitor and webcam if that's what you needed or ultimate saved you a ton of money while still getting almost or same performance as those in the A-tier/S-tier
