- Downtown Train from the official audio of the Album "Storytellers". Performance from the TV show VH1 Storytellers. Recorded near Bob Hope Airport, Burbank, California on April 1, 1999. Edited so that it is only the music, without the story at the start and with video footage.
I consider this one of Tom Waits' best performances of all time. A personal favourite, really beautiful.

Been listening to Tom since 1974, still the best lyrical threader about, need to cast a shadow down under again!! Sooo good!!
Man....what I wouldn't give to spend an evening in a bar drinking Guiness with Tom Waits on stage. The very definition of paradise.
And Jameson 🥃 ❤
Try the Union Hotel in Occidental, California
Saw Tom at this last ( probably ) ever gig in uk, with my late wife Barbara, at the Edinburgh playhouse 2008.
After 2 songs , we both looked at each other and said this is going to be the greatest gig we will see., 2:35 minutes later.
Outstanding
Was he really there , the lighting was sepia, in a playhouse from A Victorian time, small 2500 people., opera glasses were provided at 50 pence.
Best gig ever, and we had seen a few.
😊🏴☠️🎈
Me too!
I don’t drink but would still would like to hang out at the bar with him too
A poet. There is Tom. There is no one remotely like him.
Tom and Chuck were musical geniuses! Tom got all of the media; Chuck was always with and for Tom. If you want to say FU to Chuck, then you must have other effing issues!
Maybe John Prine kinda?
I’m 42. Been listening to him since I was 16. In high school I took a music appreciation class. I used to bring in Tom Waits every week. Just cause I thought everyone needed to hear him. Some got it and most didn’t. But I didn’t care. Tom Waits is in that rare air with Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson. An absolute American treasure!
I'm 72 and I can't stop...
I get it brother, I'm 42 as well. I once brought Dylan's lyrics into a English class about poets we admired, most didn't get it either.
He is amazing and my dad likes Tom Waits music too have a good one cheers 😊
Been lucky in my 62 years to have witnessed so many great artists like Waits, Cohen and Dylan none of whom are real singers but by god can they write a classic and deliver it better than anyone else. Great to hear such a good recording too.
Cohen said one times "It is suprising, that so many people comes to my concerts, although my voice only makes noises". My english is not good - I am german.
@@gerhardstahle7100 Well Gerhard your English if far better than my German!! I would rather listen to these guys and indeed women out there who actually convey emotion in their vocals than the sterile auto tune garbage we are subjected too by many so called modern superstars. I think they are all aware of the limitations of their voices and have spoken of such but they write and deliver things that others never could..
I missed the classics but listened as a child. And concluded john Denver wrote and delivered vocally and his covers. Rubbish these days
It’s because there actually saying something! That’s why it holds us so close it’s real!
@@Stevewatson3 Amen to that Steve, I guess we have been very lucky to have witnessed so many in our life time.. not much modern music that I would call classic and the test will come in another 30 to 40 years time, will it be forgotten or recalled?
Just when you start to think there's no beauty left in tbe world... you hear this ❤❤
The better voice and song writer of all time, a huge genius.
A bass, two guitars, a man with a hat, and a whole universe
His voice brings out one’s core inside out. He’ll touch your inner self and stir it. It hurts but it’s damn good!
The late great Larry Taylor on Bass!
none better! veteran of " Canned Heat"
There's nobody else like Tom. He is his own genre. ❤️
He is a true legend.
One of my favorite performers. He is in my opinion the most "original" artist out there.
what a powerful rendition of this classic
And he wrote it,and did the original version.
Even though his voice as been described as "the cookie monster singing with a mouth full of peanut butter" I have always enjoyed all his work. Tom has a style all his own. Many of his LPs in my collection.
I’m 73. Tom can bring out every emotion in me. He is in a class. And I must say a better class than anyone else I can think of
The sweetest and deepest performance I've ever heard!!! Simple masterpiece!
Maravillosa canción con su autor ,cantante excepcional 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
😀 Great way to start the morning with an awesome video! Happy 2024!!! 😀
I can feel this songs !
The bass❤️
America's greatest poet, of my lifetime.
Thank the lord (or whoever) that he came to live on the East Coast and NYC to discover and render such beauty...
A wonderful voice, feeling, passion, sentiment and empathy all rolled into one musical piece of perfection.
Magic pure souleful wonderous....that guitar acompanying is goosebump inducing genius! Love Tom Waits
What an Absolute Treasure
100 % feeling, 100 % composing genious
UWIELBIAM TOMA W TYM UTWORZE CIARY CHODZĄ PO SKÓRZE !
I’d take any train to see this grand talent and his unique excellence! Thank you Mr. Waits!
My favorite song.
Man this is amazing never thought I would get a good quality of this version
Such a great song. I have loved it from the time of its first release on Rain Dogs.
Me too. I'd like to hear Tom sing it in his normal voice, rather than the rather silly affectation which has made him famous. This song deserves it
It is a thing of beauty. Thank you Tom Waits. Your song, delivered your way.
Absolutely wonderful...
Brilliant
I actually teared up😢that was gorgeous ❤
AMAZING..... beautiful Musics and Voice.....THANKS
U are still the most extreme original artist out there. I love the scratchy throat, your inflections, your props, your voice, your expresdions, your longing. I left so much more out but I want to listen, finger stop!
Great. The song absolutely needs his voice.
Love the suits, and hats, with the music, voices and you re-creating an almost lost beautiful time and place of music that brings on rushes of back home sweet feelings.
Thank you for uploading this. Perfect performance of such a great song.
Greatness
Nailed.
Adore Tom Waits❤❤❤❤
This ! This is how you do it !!!
I bet that was a fantastic concert. Genius.
A good 18 years single malt with a girl by my side in a bar with Waits playing this!
Outside another yellow moon
Has punched a hole in the nighttime mist
I climb through the window and down to the street
I'm shining like a new dime
The downtown trains are full
Full of all them Brooklyn girls
They try so hard to break out of their little worlds
You wave your hand and they scatter like crows
They have nothing that'll ever capture your heart
They're just thorns without the rose
Be careful of them in the dark
Oh, if I was the one you chose to be your only one
Oh, baby
Can't you hear me now?
Can't you hear me now?
Will I see you tonight on a downtown train?
Every night, every night it's just the same
On a downtown train
I know your window and I know it's late
I know your stairs and your doorway
I walk down your street and past your gate
I stand by the light of the four way
And watch them as they fall, oh baby
They all having their heart attacks
They stay at the carnival
But they'll never win you back
Will I see you tonight on a downtown train?
Every night, every night, it's just the same
You leave me lonely
Will I see you tonight on a downtown train?
All my dreams, all my dreams fall like rain
On a downtown train
Will I see you tonight on a downtown train?
Every night, every night, it's just the same
Will I see you tonight on a downtown train?
All my dreams, all my dreams, fall like rain
On a downtown train
On a downtown train
All my dreams fall like rain
On a downtown train

I’d like to have a few beers with him 😅
Would love to see him live but tickets are so hard to come by, all the musicians want to go to see how you do it 👍
damn , i'll give 10 years of my life to be in that room .....:3
🖤
What an amazing singer song writer he inspired me to write songs
No you won't

punched a hole in my heart
.......Hope Tom Finally Found a Personality He Could Comfortably Live With !!!
He's great in The Dead Don't Die movie as hermit Bob.
He's great in every movie he's in that I've seen him in. Dracula, Rumble Fish, Fischer King seven psychopaths...

For those that do not know, Tom had a partner in musical excellence. Please explore Chuck E Weiss, from the great "Chuck E's in LOve," tune by ? I live in DEnver, Chuck and his brother lived here. Please check out Chuck.
Ricky Lee Jones is the name... Guess you already knew that.
The point was not RLJ, but he greatness of my Denver resident, Chuck E Weiss. There is a good story about her song. Google it!@@nicria1
A unique interpretation of the Rod Stewart classic ❤
For the avoidance of doubt, this was written by Tom Waits😊
Got to be taking the piss
Rod Stuart?? Please go far away from here
@chrisjames6327 : Tom Waits wrote it and Rod Stewart's version is totally lame!
Clearly, That was a joke?
🤘🤘
I hope I pass before he does. I’m not looking forward to the memories being my only thoughts of Tom.
Fabulous
Waits l'ha scritta e Rod Stewart in primis e Waits poi con le royalties ci hanno fatto i soldi
Immensa l'originale, ma molto bella e ben fatta la cover di Rod The Mod
Clear throat .
It was is
It is ...
(Official Audio) BEST Version ... as opposed to what ?
official audio as opposed to the crap bootleg vhs audio version.. also I say this is the best version because its better than the album version in my opinion, less 80s pop sounding, more soulful.
what the hell? 1:19
I think he’s covering the Rod Stewart version of his own song there 😅
@@marmal320idk why i commented this now that I saw your reply lol I guess it's because of the loud guitar out of the blue lol
What happened ? I didn’t get it
@@DrrobertLondonrod Stewart guitar lick, not the Tom waits version lol
@@dtsenear sounds like his own version to me? Rod’s one has keyboards rather than lead guitar doesn’t it ?
Tom waits might not want to converse.so what?you maybe wouldn't like the fella..be yourself and stick.
The Springsteen of brooklyn. cool guitar. overplayed but nice tone. ty
I'll never understand why playing live, the artists change the songs..
In the original record, the guitar is incredibly beautiful..
Here, the guitar is close to the ridiculous.. What a pity
The "original record" is not the original version of the song, it is a long way into the process, and has been commercialized for general consumption by a producer. Artists don't often appreciate a producers edit, find it difficult to play, and naturally tend to play their own version instead. They even imagine that this is the "real" version, because it is what they actually wrote. Any true artist explores the song anew every time, finding new angles. In live performance, they adapt, using whatever musicians, stages and sound systems are available. Audiences want the producer's version and expect an exact reproduction of it, even though it was made in a studio by different personnel, in completely different circumstances from a live performance.
@@mustafa1name
I meant the "original version" on Rain Dogs album..
( For example, Genesis, Yes and Emerson Lake & Palmer played the songs live, exactly like on the original albums.
Note for note )
@@tonykeith76 I know what you meant. If those old prog-rock bands really reproduced studio conditions at different venues, that's a very weird and boring thing to do, but in the olden days the biz relied on vinyl sales, so maybe that was a commercial constraint.
@@mustafa1name
Instead, I believe that reproducing music as faithfully as possible to the original, is an indication of professionalism and above all, respect for the public...
That's my opinion as a musician..
Love it being different every tour. Boring to just recreate exactly. Another opinion. As Tom said in Edinburgh playhouse, “they’re all requests, but they’re your requests.
Me gusta muchísimo mas con mi bellisimo Rod steward
My Buena interpretation con el increible rod Stewart
@@eduardopalacios2265sono due voci diverse...😊🤔😌
Very good performance and a beautiful song. But I still prefer Bob Seger's version.
Rod made it better, let’s be honest.
Rod who??? You said some space bullshit man.
Wouldn't it be great if your opinion meant something. You obviously don't know much about music lyrics poetry living it and singing about it is pure genius. Rod Stuart couldn't carry Tom waits equipment, and certainly couldn't ride a downtown train in Brooklyn
@@JakeArmstrong-xi1yo Sorry mate, english is not my mother language, i believe that you hate Tom Waits. My mistake, I love Tom Waits music, lyrics and voice. Bye.
Even though I love this, the public obviously agrees with your opinion.
Rod's version went to No. 1, and sold much much more than Tom waits.
@@zainmukadam5861 Well, that's like saying Taylor Swift is the best singer for people who don't understand anything about good music mate.
This guy cannot sing.
Yes, like you I hope.
@rossanozanga9581 so you agree. And never said I could sing.
@@vdoggydogg3922 You mate can not sing ever. Probably you do not know nothin about Tom Waits. Go back to the scool and read some book about your ignorance.
I only wish I could sing like Tom-it’s absolutely beautiful!
