Tom. You saved my life 7 and a half years ago. My oldest daughter died and for 6 months I listened to you. It helped more than I can ever say. Thank you!
sorry for your loss
@@malcolmbillington2864 thank you

History will remember Mr. Waits as one of the greatest American artists of the twentieth century.Every life should have a little Tom Waits in it.

Definitely deserves "Mark Twain" better than the next receiptant.( can't think of the short black comedians name)
Tom waits and Ry Cooder neither have gotten their due but I doubt they care much.
you obviously don't know his wife Kathleen Brennan , Tom is one-half of one of the greatest Artistic / Creative duos of all time
I have fought off foreclosure five times. I found out my wife was having an affair a week after having my heart attack. I got fat, bald and my knees went bad. I have been on the brink of bankruptcy more times than I can count. Felt like a failure as a husband, a father, a friend and a man. Now I am back on my feet, had one of the best Christmases of my life and will be a Grandfather in March. Tom is right. You just got to hold on. It's hard but you can do it.
Theres something to be said for longevity!! so glad you held on.things always change.xxx
good for you!!!!
Hell yeah Mike. Keep it up.
I’ve been through about everything you mentioned. Throw in a severe addiction to multiple substances. I’m really glad that you found your way through it. As hard as it is, I found it helped to embrace the bad with the good. You can’t find a better way to help you to appreciate the good when it arrives. Those times when I was alone were actually something I needed, in retrospect. Beforehand, I was arrogant, reckless, and downright ungrateful. I sincerely hope that every day for you gets better than the day before.
Dang man I love your comment. Glad you have found a way to heal. Hope you get my message! Thanks for sharing
My bonus dad shared this song a year plus ago, it will forever make me think of him. He is currently battling cancer, diagnosed 3 months ago roughly. Please pray for him.
My Prayers are with you and your dad. Be strong and Hold On. 🙏
Any updates since then?
Prayers for you and yours whatever the situation..member to hold on... God bless.
Hold on to your childish imagination
Always find humor in every situation
Never let others be your frustration
An keep a smile in every conversation
Stay young no matter your generation
My husband Jim was in the hospital almost 2 months fighting Covid. Tom Waits accompanied me on my hour long car drives to see him every day. Praying to God I would not lose him, Tom helped me to hold on and gave me hope. I am forever grateful to this talented artist that helped give me the strength to keep going. ❤
God bless you , bless Tom Waits, and your husband. You didn't say , but I sure hope you still have him.
Hoping that you and your family are doing better at this time
LOVE TOM. BEST WISHES TO YOU AND YOUR HUSBAND!
Bless you
Hope you and Jim are well.
I’ve listened to Waits for decades, but somehow managed to miss this song until now. I recently lost my wife of forty years, and my main purpose in life is to care for our autistic son. I truly need to hold on.
I'm so sorry for your loss. Stay strong ❤
No aguantes, vivelo todo lo que puedas..
I pray that God give you strength through your pain and suffering. As the pain may not be easier today. I can promise if you hold on for God. 1 day for the pain to get better is a promise. In Jesus name. Amen.
Sorry for your loss. The 14th of June will be 51yrs since I lost my husband and 'Hold on' was all I knew of what to do about it. People told me to let go...move on, but that's impossible- I tried. So I hold on til it's my time...my turn to die. Some people you don't let go of. You carry them inside all your life.💔❤️🩹❤️🔥💯
Maybe you heard it at just the right time. ❤
This was the first song I heard when I left my abusive wife 2 years ago. My boys and I moved in with my mom and dad and we lost dad last year. Regretfully, this was the first song I heard from Tom Waits and I cried like a baby when he said "come on, Jim" because it felt like he was speaking right to me. Things are only getting better as time rolls on. And all you have to do is hold on.
Glad you were able to get out of that situation. Keep holding on!
Never let go...
I lost my love after 22 years a couple days ago and it is hard
@@zachariahjones1310 I'm sorry.
But your name is cellar.
I remember riding with my Dad in his 1995 Del Sol with the top down while listening to Tom Waits - I was only 8 years old and we were both hungry for food, and Dad was also hungry for new cigars. It was always a Saturday, the day he had off from work back then, and we would find our way to Chick-fil-A, one of the newer fast food chains in our area that happened to nestle itself in a corner across the parking lot of Boda Pipes, a local cigar store. He would load Bone Machine into his CD player before we left and he would always make sure that our car rides together finished the entire CD, which was just short of an hour of drive time.
My Dad loved listening to albums front to back, all the time. Never a song wasted. And now that I know how long it took to get to Chick-fil-A, Boda Pipes, and then back home, it was far short of the 53 minute runtime of that Tom Waits album. Tom Waits meant so much to him at that time that we absolutely had to share the drive and songs together until they were done. And boy oh boy did it wear off on me.
This song was playing when my childs heart stopped during labour, and we did Hold On....and it started beating again. True story.
❤
All these years and I still find Tom saving me again and again. Whether it's after a bad breakup or my search for God and complete and utter surrender to that Force, Tom is always there. Thank you. ❣️❤️
This song creates a memory that doesnt exist

I’m 70. He is a national treasure. Loved him long time now.
The hardest times have yet to come.
Tom Waits is the reason I am still here. I only had 2 albums in 1998, one Richie Sambora, one Tom Waits. Both cost half monthly income. I had no equipment to listen to these as I was homeless. Went to joint in old town, put the CD on and asked permission to wash my hair in that huge metal sink at the back. Then did the dishes for beer and some food. Survived the harsh winters.
You're a better man than most hope your doing better now
Good for you! I have had bankruptcy once and three years ago my wife of 20 years left me at about the same time I was diagnosed with cancer of the mouth, which resulted in losing most of my lower jaw. Since then I have had a lung embolism, a collapsed lung, blood poisoning, and once my heart stopped beating for about two minutes. But somehow, something inside me said to Hold On. So now I am still here and maybe healthier than I have been in 20+ years. Great song.
Tom Waits writes lyrics that invite his listeners to create with him. They sketch out the framework and our experiences fill in the details. Masterful.
Yep...Tom Waits tops my list and Dylan brings in second-place prize.
@@cathydwiggins7922 Tom writes an entire movie in most of his songs.
The framework analogy is good. TW is definitely a carpenter of songs.
Well put, like reading a book. He speaks to ypur mind's eye.
Very well said.
One of the greatest songs ever written.
You must be high as fuck. This shit sucks
Hold on...is the one you can do... it's the reason for all living beings around the world 🌎🫶
Lyrics
They hung a sign up in our town
"If you live it up, you won't live it down"
So she left Monte Rio, son
Just like a bullet leaves a gun
With her charcoal eyes and Monroe hips
She went and took that California trip
Oh, the moon was gold, her hair like wind
Said, "don't look back, just come on, Jim"
Oh, you got to hold on, hold on
You gotta hold on
Take my hand, I'm standing right here, you gotta hold on
Well, he gave her a dimestore watch
And a ring made from a spoon
Everyone's looking for someone to blame
When you share my bed, you share my name
Well, go ahead and call the cops
You don't meet nice girls in coffee shops
She said, "baby, I still love you"
Sometimes there's nothin' left to do
Oh, but you got to hold on, hold on
Babe, you gotta hold on and take my hand
I'm standing right here, you gotta hold on
Well, God bless your crooked little heart
St. Louis got the best of me
I miss your broken China voice
How I wish you were still here with me
Oh, you build it up, you wreck it down
Then you burn your mansion to the ground
Oh, there's nothing left to keep you here
But when you're falling behind in this big blue world
Oh, you've got to hold on, hold on
Babe, you gotta hold on
Take my hand, I'm standing right here, you gotta hold on
Down by the Riverside motel
It's ten below and falling
By a ninety-nine cent store
She closed her eyes and started swaying
But it's so hard to dance that way
When it's cold and there's no music
Oh, your old hometown's so far away
But inside your head there's a record that's playing
A song called "Hold On", hold on
Babe, you gotta hold on
Take my hand, I'm standing right there, you gotta hold on
You gotta hold on, hold on
Babe, you gotta hold on
Take my hand, I'm standing right there, you gotta hold on
You gotta hold on, hold on
Babe, you gotta hold on
And take my hand, I'm standing right here, you gotta hold on
You gotta hold on, hold on
Babe, you gotta hold on
And take my hand, I'm standing right here, you gotta hold on
You gotta hold on
You gotta hold on
You gotta hold on
You gotta hold on
You gotta hold on, baby
You gotta hold on, girl
You gotta hold on
You gotta hold on
thanks it took so long to find the words Regards N P Australia
Thank you for the lyrics.

So kind of you & thank you for writing the lyrics of this powerful song . No doubt it gives me a hope & a gentle ray of light as I'm alive for my children. My children are the reason.
Appreciate your time in doing this❤
This man doesnt write songs, he writes stories. Stories from the heart and from the soul, more real than anything you will ever hear on the radio. I hope you live to be 100, Tom, and keep the music flowing.

How does a man who sounds like he smokes tires and drinks gasoline make such beautiful songs?
+Odin Tillgren Oh man, I was just thinking something very like that. Truth!
That is a brilliant line "he smokes tyres and drinks gasoline
Him and Leonard Cohen make that "I gargle shards of glass and bleach" voice work amazingly well.

lol and let's not forget bob dylan, joe cocker...it's the man behind da voice, every time. He gives me goosebumps. Every time
I was so happy when Beth Greene from TWD [The Walking Dead] (my fav character😊) sang this for her whole group when they were preparing for the war in Season 3, it was so nostalgic. Missing the old TWD when it was that deep and the characters were the original🥺🥹💓✨🌌
I like to think that there is the multiverse where I live a better life than I live here. I also imagine that Tom Waits is the exact same in every single possible universe. He is the Universal Constant.

My first husband (now dead) turned me on to Tom. His name was Jim. Our relationship wasn’t headed where I was hoping - so after 6 yrs of dating I moved to California to pursue my passion. The line about “she went and took that California trip” - and the line about “don’t look back just come on Jim” - have always resonated. We eventually married - and divorced - and he passed passed shortly thereafter - listening to this song is tough. Bittersweet. More bitter than sweet. Makes me wonder if I should have held on longer than I did with his sobriety struggles. Went on to have a family after him. And amazing kids. My dream realized. But he was my soulmate. Tough to listen to Tom. He was my soulmate and without him I’d never have been introduced to Tom. This song is a tough one now though. Very evocative.
was it sucide?
alcohol...it's silent suicide, whether intentional or a by-product. At least with those I've lost to it. 😔
I grew up listening to Tom Waits and man this guy is a genius from songwriting to composition, he is a master at his craft and and a true poet with his lyrics. Hold On is a song that I remember when I was growing up in the 1990s. Its a work of art. My dad is a huge fan of Tom and drew me to his music. I guess I was raised the right way.
Don’t forget about Kathleen Brennan
@@ryMorVEX I am going to be doing a radio Spotlight on Tom Waits and yes his wife Kathleen is a wonderful songwriter.
So weird. Im taking a jazz class and we had to find artists who were influenced by Louis Armstrong, so I mentioned this guy. A few days later I was watching "Deserted", a movie with Mischa Barton. At then end of the film this song started playing, I looked it up and it was this song sung by the guy I'd just written about.😊 Coincidences. Been listening for a few days now❤
How can you not love Tom Waits?
As rough as some of his work sounds, it's songs like this, soft broken little ballads sung from the heart that truly show you Tom's range. From crooner to caterwauler, bulldog to bawler, this man isn't great simply because of his unique voice. It's the soul of his lyrics and the pure, raw, honesty of his performances that truly distinguish him as a master of his craft.
If you are going through a junk yard of a time in life, I always recommend Tom Waits - man is one of my biggest musical heroes - but also one of my biggest hero's
You cant "share" Tom's songs, because your friends wont feel what you feel listening to it. Their own their own journey, which is why they may need to hear it. They wont get what you're going through, but his pain will help them get through their struggles. Which is why he MUST be shared
Love it, have it on repeat, repeat, repeat.......
..repeat, repeat.....>>_

Music is incredible- it can save us, explain us to ourselves, tell what we don't have the words to tell, make us cry, make us happy, make us think, make us not think, relax us, excite us---and plenty more. Been listening to and loving Tom Waits for as long as I can remember, in the start of my growing up lifetime, that is. My daughter died, too. I get it. Hold On! Jenna's Mother
It was the 70s. I was living near Chicago and seeing all the folk musicians like Steve Goodman and John Prine etc live and in person.
Then a friend said we gotta see this Tom Waits guy. I think he was appearing at Biddy Mulligan's on the far north side. Standing in line to get in a scruffy skinny guy is stumbling around pushing his way in. He mumbled something about "where's the bathroom..."
