I do want to make corrections to avoid confusion. At 11:51 I meant to say the monitoring source section only sums to the monitor outputs and not the main mix bus. There is no way to sum Bus B to the main mix bus! & At 8:41- the external inputs are summed to the main mix bus by depressing the EXT 1&2 above the main mix fader (the directions I gave instead showed summing to the monitor outputs)!
Great video. I have a question. In a studio summing situation recording electronic music, what are some type of devices or benefits using the external inputs could add to a project recording studio? Seeing I'm just tracking through the available channels, recording vocals and already have a vocal chain (external preamp/compressor)? What are some examples those external inputs could benefit my overall mix? Basically I don't know what type of devices would be a good use for those inputs, i'm thinking other then something like outboard effects, other than that I don't know what I can plug in those inputs.
@@CzarPharo There are various things you could use those Ext inputs for. In my studio I have the output from my Computer (DAW) coming in on Ext 1 and the output from my DJ mixer coming in on Ext 2. Another nice trick is to physically patch the output from Bus B into one of the Ext inputs and that will patch that into the Main bus.
@@CzarPharo You could also physically connect the output from one of your fold back channels into one of the Ext inputs, enable to talk button for that fold back and feed the talk mic input into your main mix bus.

Congratulations on creating the first and most thorough walkthrough of the SSL SIX! :) I love mine. It is probably the most misunderstood piece of gear I have even seen people look at and talk about! From "should be an interface" to "needs more than 6 inputs" and my favourite "costs more than a 50$ mixer and should be also as cheap". I love the quality of sound and io. Bless. Was fun to watch.
@@audioapprentice4293 I truly think that SSL was just testing the waters with the SSLsix and since the audio mixer and interface market is littered with two extremes of options from cheap component and sub quality internals and preamps in current mixers that people have just accepted and are happy to use in the 20$-200$ range then there is a strange mid section with usb connectors and very poor ADDA conversion which I think is what some people think that SSL should match with the six wanting many more channels and full versions of the eq and compressors ontop of the preamps. If you do the match of building a system like that on your own it is impossible even to create 1 single channel strip for less than 4k$ (case$, PRE $, 611EQ $, 611DYN $, GCOMP$, LMC$, ) That blows the cost of the ssl6 with just 1 pre amp and a good case to hold it!!). I am glad there was no ADDA in this unit as it would have dated the unit instantly UNLESS it was a module that was removable so that as the computer connectivity that you see has continued to change since the 80's com ports and floppy disks till today with PCI-USB-FIREWIRE-USB-THUNDERBOLT-***(it will continue). these things will continue to change and putting usb or anything on these mixers limits their usability and compatibility from moment you buy it and gets worse from day 2 till forever. I had a UAD Apollo with this issue as it is self-crippled and limited by operating system and their own ecosystem which even internally has issues (LUNA on windows usb vs thunderbolt and its a newish device). /end rant

Eventually someone is gonna explain the D-sub benefit (I hope because NOBODY can show me how it works. Not even SSL). A simple time edited " Cable goes here and is controlled by this button switch or knob" description for all the I/O does not exist on the internet. Diagrams do not cut it for all users and are so 1980s. We now have VIDEO. Don't tell us just show us. This thing is amazing! Once people learn how to use it with their interface/DAW/and 10,000 plugins, and how to properly utilize the " Money Channels", they may start flying off the shelves. I'm still having a hard time setting it up. I have a rosetta 800 3 sound modules. 1 mono synths 2 drum machines. A great river mp2nv and a dbx 120a. My interface is an apogee duet. I've been using a patchbay but I know it has to be a better way
dokta hyde utilize the DSub connectors for an insert channel for your DBX. I recommend trying several different routings for your synth and drums until you find which channels you like best for what. Thanks for watching!
is it possible to do sidechain compression using say, a kickdrum to one channel, feeding it to the sidechain of compressor 1, or 2? Great video thank you. I am planning to use this live, with vocals, a backing track and synthesizer.
I/Os with different impedance (low or high) have a certain cable they’re intended for. Low impedance I/Os we use XLR and TRS and with hi impedance I/Os we use TS cables. You won’t be plugging in a TS cable to the SSL SiX without hi-z button engaged... otherwise it’ll be a very quiet signal!

for home practice as a bassist ... I like to plug my bass in via the Mic level out on my amp, and then a music source (ipod, laptop etc via 3.5mm jack) to my mixer and hear music thru headphones that I can play to.. is it possible to do this with this mixer?
Hey man great video! I understood the majority of the info you presented. Can you explain the whole panning concept when using the output through Bus B? Also if I have a mono track with a single instrument in Channel one would I have to pan the stereo cue pan knob hard left if I am sending the channel signal out through the foldbacks? I want to send to an external reverb unit then back in to stereo inputs. Thank!
Right now I have two mono synths plugged into channels 1 and 2 then I use the stereo cues 1 and 2 to go out to a stereo reverb and delay individually... then route those stereo cues back into channels 3/4 and 5/6 each to create stereo FX sends. if anyone else has done it differently i'd love to hear how.
Is it possible to send the main output to my speakers while simultaneously sending another stereo output to my daw? FYI, I plan on using all ten front inputs in case that affects the answer. Great video btw!
Can you clarify how I’d integrate a guitar effects pedal, and manage signal level out and back. Often the line level to a pedal is too hot and vice versa, it needs more level coming back. I’m more used to seeing an insert point with return level. I know it’s all in there but the terminology is not what I’m used. Send via Cue, maybe post fade to manage the send level? What about on the return? Thanks
I actually hope to do a good vocal recording demo one day for it. There really are a freaky number of options depending on what you wanna do! Hope you found a solution for yourself.
Ocean Ave Records You’ll want to use two dsubs male and female. One will be the send to the fusion with the main bus’s dry signal and the other will be the return signal that will have the processing.
Great vid. Please help!!! I'm such a luddite. I have an SSL6 and I basically use it to record two drum mics simultaneously. I used to just pan the two tracks hard left and right thus giving me separation via the left and right outputs into my interface. Not sure what I've pressed or if there's something wrong with my interface but the tracks are coming through into my daw with equal volume? I.e I don't seem to be getting the separation of tracks anymore. Hope that makes sense. Not sure what's up but it's killing me!!!!!
Looking at this for my ITB music production as an outboard summing mixer. It seems like it's more geared for DJs and live recordings. Do you think this would help enhance the sound of my ITB mixes? So many features here it's almost intimidating.
Hmm. I wouldn’t recommend for ITB mixes. The tonality of the SiX is great but for what it’ll cost you instead of getting a few great plug-ins. It’s up to you. I would get the SiX if you want to record with it as well as mix in outboard gear.

Thanks for this vid! Much needed. Question: when I’m using the G Series comp. I don’t hear it coming through the mix when I press the Bus B. I’ve tried exporting it while it’s on and It doesn’t come out in the bounce either. I’ve done real-time and offline. What am I doing wrong?
The G-bus only applies to the main mix bus and their corresponding channel line output (the two xlr outputs on the far right behind the SiX) and subsequently the monitor and alt monitor outputs (both TRS outputs). Unfortunately the g bus does not insert to the Bus B- and I wish it did.... but here’s what I do: Use the xlr channel line output (main mix bus) or the trs monitor output as the input for your DAW, then in regards to the DAW’s output (the playback signal) return it to an external input or a stereo input on SiX to be sent out the foldbacks then into your monitors. With an external input: use the console’s “foldback section” to send the external input out of the foldback to be plugged in to your monitor (the monitor level control would be the foldback output knob). For the stereo channel input: mute it with bus B, then use the stereo cue send to output to the foldback then to your monitors (level controlled by the st. cue send level knob). The benefit of using a stereo input for playback is you can send any of the first 6 channels to that foldback output or just the DAW’s playback with a st. cue send, whatever you want to hear from your monitors. I hope that can be useful for you! And I hope to make another video that’ll get into the many complicated routing options.
I’d use the main mix bus along with the Bus B to be plugged into your interface. Then I’d take the output from the interface and run it though either one of the stereo channel. Lastly take the monitor outputs on the SSL to your listening monitors! Cheers
@@audioapprentice4293 I run my audio interface's outputs in to Ext 1 and a separate apogee DAC in to Ext 2, so I'm able to free up all 6 channels to record through the preamps right back to the audio interface while still able to send the main mix to an apogee ADC. That's one of the most pleasant surprises about the SiX: sounds great while being very, very flexible once you get your head around it.
Really great video, very clear. If I want to use the Alt 1 input through the Dsub to sum a mono synth into the mix, do you know if I need balanced or unbalanced jacks on the other end of the Dsub cable?

Audio apprentice I am new to audio recording and I don’t know if you already covered this . If I want to record the stereo output from my digital synthesizer BUT I want use the equalizers on the channel strips what do I do ? They are both MONO equalizers.
It doesn't matter buddy, synth stereo out goes into channel 1 and 2, so you can use the EQs. All you have to do is hard pan channel 1 to the left and channel 2 to the right.

SSL only has 2 channel interfaces. The apollo is not comparable really. If you are looking at Universal Audio interface options then you should at the very least look at the Apollo X4, X6 or X8 otherwise you will not be able to take advantage of the number of channels in and out of the SSL SiX. If you want a great option perhaps look at Audient id44. Much cheaper than the apollo options.
@@mariosmith3301 plus remember that as the six is analogue with no bit depth or resolution dependence like the interface based pres the six can generate super loud and clean signal, tamed if you wish before being sent to your interface. I owned the Apollo and its great but even a clone hardware pre of less quality than the ssl is better still to date than the emulated options. They are getting better but still not the same.
Does the alt input accessible via db25 flow through the main mono channels? I'd like to be able to be able to route signal out from my interface and through the mono channels for processing without having to keep plugging/unplugging from the normal inputs on top whenever I want to plug in a guitar or mic.
The alt inputs are a part of a separate signal path than the mono channels even though they are on the same strip. So unfortunately, no you cannot add processors to the alt inputs. They can only be modified via panning or dBs. You can always use the alt inputs as channels that are processed ‘in the box’.
I would like to know more in depth about the db25 connection, it seems an illusive subject for some reason? I have a presonus 32s and I'd like to use the ssl six for incoming micraphone signals and analogue summing for final mix down. I would like to incorporate a db 25 cable I would appreciate you're thoughts on this?
The big advantage of the DB25 is you’ll get two additional inputs for mix down and insert capability on the money channels and master bus. I couldn’t demonstrate what that looks like because my interface is a stereo i/o. Sadly I haven’t been able to use the DB-25, although I’d love to. If you have enough cables you can use the several Aux mixes from the presonus mixer to feed the mono, stereo, and EXT inputs. I have used the StudioLive 24 and it sounds really good but I can see why you’d like to incorporate the SSL circuitry.

OK...so how would I connect a API 512c to the SSL Six in a way that that any signal that goes thru that channel is printed with the API sound? I'm thinking connecting like and insert effect but not sure if a pre works that way or could that be done thru Aux sends and returns?
I would save the insert button on the mono channel strip for a compressor instead of a preamp like your api (very nice). Your best bet is to route the api Output either to a patchbay and then into the channel trs or xlr input or just direct out of the preamp into the channel TRS or xlr input.

I'm basically trying to maximize only having one API512c and one 1073LB. I'd like to run them on channels 3&4 ( that way it bypasses the SSL pre) but be able to connect directly into it or run ANY channel from the DAW thru either preamp. I only use VST instruments but for vocals it would be nice to have all 3 preamps available at all times...and thanks again...youve been the absolute BIGGEST help to me..

Would I be able to hook the SSL SiX into my interface and then perhaps even add a SSL Fusion into the SSL Six? Well the audio interface is your only way to connect the SiX with a DAW. So to answer your question Yes you most definitely can run the fusion through the SiX (requires a DB25 connection). Just know your SSL 2 is limited to only one Stereo input!

trs vs ts cable has nothing to do with impedance, its the guitar pickup (hiz) vs line output (like a mic preamp out).

for home practice as a bassist ... I like to plug my bass in via the Mic level out on my amp, and then a music source (ipod, laptop etc via 3.5mm jack) to my mixer and hear music thru headphones that I can play to.. is it possible to do this with this mixer?

Hey man great video! I understood the majority of the info you presented. Can you explain the whole panning concept when using the output through Bus B? Also if I have a mono track with a single instrument in Channel one would I have to pan the stereo cue pan knob hard left if I am sending the channel signal out through the foldbacks? I want to send to an external reverb unit then back in to stereo inputs. Thank!
Right now I have two mono synths plugged into channels 1 and 2 then I use the stereo cues 1 and 2 to go out to a stereo reverb and delay individually... then route those stereo cues back into channels 3/4 and 5/6 each to create stereo FX sends. if anyone else has done it differently i'd love to hear how.
Is it possible to send the main output to my speakers while simultaneously sending another stereo output to my daw? FYI, I plan on using all ten front inputs in case that affects the answer. Great video btw!
Yes. The monitor outputs (TRS) on the back go to your speakers and the Main Line Out (XLR) go to your input on your interface.
Why would you need to press both INSERT and ALT when wanting to include the alt inputs? And why use the Aux sends in that case?
Can you clarify how I’d integrate a guitar effects pedal, and manage signal level out and back. Often the line level to a pedal is too hot and vice versa, it needs more level coming back. I’m more used to seeing an insert point with return level. I know it’s all in there but the terminology is not what I’m used. Send via Cue, maybe post fade to manage the send level? What about on the return? Thanks

Ocean Ave Records You’ll want to use two dsubs male and female. One will be the send to the fusion with the main bus’s dry signal and the other will be the return signal that will have the processing.
Ocean Ave Records they’re should be 2 male and 2 female xlrs from the dsubs because the main bus path is stereo.

Great vid. Please help!!! I'm such a luddite. I have an SSL6 and I basically use it to record two drum mics simultaneously. I used to just pan the two tracks hard left and right thus giving me separation via the left and right outputs into my interface. Not sure what I've pressed or if there's something wrong with my interface but the tracks are coming through into my daw with equal volume? I.e I don't seem to be getting the separation of tracks anymore. Hope that makes sense. Not sure what's up but it's killing me!!!!!

Looking at this for my ITB music production as an outboard summing mixer. It seems like it's more geared for DJs and live recordings. Do you think this would help enhance the sound of my ITB mixes? So many features here it's almost intimidating.
Hmm. I wouldn’t recommend for ITB mixes. The tonality of the SiX is great but for what it’ll cost you instead of getting a few great plug-ins. It’s up to you. I would get the SiX if you want to record with it as well as mix in outboard gear.

Question: when I’m using the G Series comp. I don’t hear it coming through the mix when I press the Bus B. I’ve tried exporting it while it’s on and It
doesn’t come out in the bounce either. I’ve done real-time and offline. What am I doing wrong?
The G-bus only applies to the main mix bus and their corresponding channel line output (the two xlr outputs on the far right behind the SiX) and subsequently the monitor and alt monitor outputs (both TRS outputs). Unfortunately the g bus does not insert to the Bus B- and I wish it did.... but here’s what I do: Use the xlr channel line output (main mix bus) or the trs monitor output as the input for your DAW, then in regards to the DAW’s output (the playback signal) return it to an external input or a stereo input on SiX to be sent out the foldbacks then into your monitors. With an external input: use the console’s “foldback section” to send the external input out of the foldback to be plugged in to your monitor (the monitor level control would be the foldback output knob). For the stereo channel input: mute it with bus B, then use the stereo cue send to output to the foldback then to your monitors (level controlled by the st. cue send level knob). The benefit of using a stereo input for playback is you can send any of the first 6 channels to that foldback output or just the DAW’s playback with a st. cue send, whatever you want to hear from your monitors. I hope that can be useful for you! And I hope to make another video that’ll get into the many complicated routing options.

I’d use the main mix bus along with the Bus B to be plugged into your interface. Then I’d take the output from the interface and run it though either one of the stereo channel. Lastly take the monitor outputs on the SSL to your listening monitors! Cheers
@@audioapprentice4293 I run my audio interface's outputs in to Ext 1 and a separate apogee DAC in to Ext 2, so I'm able to free up all 6 channels to record through the preamps right back to the audio interface while still able to send the main mix to an apogee ADC. That's one of the most pleasant surprises about the SiX: sounds great while being very, very flexible once you get your head around it.
Really great video, very clear. If I want to use the Alt 1 input through the Dsub to sum a mono synth into the mix, do you know if I need balanced or unbalanced jacks on the other end of the Dsub cable?
All depends on ur synth but ideally balanced. If your synth is only unbalanced outputs then I would recommend using a DI box.

Audio apprentice I am new to audio recording and I don’t know if you already covered this . If I want to record the stereo output from my digital synthesizer BUT I want use the equalizers on the channel strips what do I do ? They are both MONO equalizers.
It doesn't matter buddy, synth stereo out goes into channel 1 and 2, so you can use the EQs. All you have to do is hard pan channel 1 to the left and channel 2 to the right.

Yes, all inputs (beside the d-sub inputs) can be routed to a cue send. However, only mono channel 1 & 2 can have an insert.

SSL only has 2 channel interfaces. The apollo is not comparable really. If you are looking at Universal Audio interface options then you should at the very least look at the Apollo X4, X6 or X8 otherwise you will not be able to take advantage of the number of channels in and out of the SSL SiX. If you want a great option perhaps look at Audient id44. Much cheaper than the apollo options.

@@mariosmith3301 plus remember that as the six is analogue with no bit depth or resolution dependence like the interface based pres the six can generate super loud and clean signal, tamed if you wish before being sent to your interface. I owned the Apollo and its great but even a clone hardware pre of less quality than the ssl is better still to date than the emulated options. They are getting better but still not the same.
So your recommendation is SSL Pre Amp over the Apollo
Does the alt input accessible via db25 flow through the main mono channels? I'd like to be able to be able to route signal out from my interface and through the mono channels for processing without having to keep plugging/unplugging from the normal inputs on top whenever I want to plug in a guitar or mic.
The alt inputs are a part of a separate signal path than the mono channels even though they are on the same strip. So unfortunately, no you cannot add processors to the alt inputs. They can only be modified via panning or dBs. You can always use the alt inputs as channels that are processed ‘in the box’.
I would like to know more in depth about the db25 connection, it seems an illusive subject for some reason? I have a presonus 32s and I'd like to use the ssl six for incoming micraphone signals and analogue summing for final mix down. I would like to incorporate a db 25 cable I would appreciate you're thoughts on this?
The big advantage of the DB25 is you’ll get two additional inputs for mix down and insert capability on the money channels and master bus. I couldn’t demonstrate what that looks like because my interface is a stereo i/o. Sadly I haven’t been able to use the DB-25, although I’d love to. If you have enough cables you can use the several Aux mixes from the presonus mixer to feed the mono, stereo, and EXT inputs. I have used the StudioLive 24 and it sounds really good but I can see why you’d like to incorporate the SSL circuitry.

OK...so how would I connect a API 512c to the SSL Six in a way that that any signal that goes thru that channel is printed with the API sound? I'm thinking connecting like and insert effect but not sure if a pre works that way or could that be done thru Aux sends and returns?
I would save the insert button on the mono channel strip for a compressor instead of a preamp like your api (very nice). Your best bet is to route the api Output either to a patchbay and then into the channel trs or xlr input or just direct out of the preamp into the channel TRS or xlr input.

I'm basically trying to maximize only having one API512c and one 1073LB. I'd like to run them on channels 3&4 ( that way it bypasses the SSL pre) but be able to connect directly into it or run ANY channel from the DAW thru either preamp. I only use VST instruments but for vocals it would be nice to have all 3 preamps available at all times...and thanks again...youve been the absolute BIGGEST help to me..

Yes, by using the stereo cue send and their subsequent fallback outputs with the return path leading into an external, alternate, or stereo input :)

Well the audio interface is your only way to connect the SiX with a DAW. So to answer your question Yes you most definitely can run the fusion through the SiX (requires a DB25 connection). Just know your SSL 2 is limited to only one Stereo input!
