As a man who grew up the 70s and 80s, what Michael is doing is expressing is what was an unashamed appeal to someone he truly loved - and he wasn’t about to let her go without giving his all.
Idiots today call it being “in your feelings” when in reality it’s setting aside your pride in the interest of relationship. These modern terms (“in your feelings”, “situationships”, and so on) are a contributor to (or result of) why our people are in the dire straits we’re in.

Aside from the great singer Michael McDonald, this tune is ALL ABOUT THE TITLE LYRIC...How many of us have awakened after a restless night's sleep, and it hits you square between your eyes and ears and you say.."Oh, that's right, I keep forgettin' we're not in love any more"...."Things will never be the same again"....and your heart begins to ache. Your soul feels empty, and you feel lost, and oh, so all alone. You got dumped, yet, you are still so much in love. I cry every time I hear this tune.

You're exactly right that men, and young men in particular, are socialised to be much harder and less emotional now. It's seen as weakness and simping, essentially, to express deep love for someone. We all have our walls up, and want to protect ourselves. It's a shame. Lots of things were much worse in the past, but this is definitely one thing we've lost - the softness and the tenderness.

The mindset of "If you work hard to get something. You appreciate it more" applies to relationships back then.
A guy had to "work" to get a girl's attention. "Work" meant pursuing, actually talking and getting to know them. Asking for a date and planning and putting some thought into the date(s).
We valued women that actually valued themselves.
It doesn't mean there wasn't "casual encounters" or "one night stands" there definitely was. It just seemed like people were more respectful then.
Women were seen as a "prize" or "gift" to be celebrated instead of just a "conquest" to disrespect.
Nowadays it seems like people just "hook up." The lines of an exclusive relationship a very blurred.
Especially when Independent Women act like they don't need or want men.
Men used to hold doors open for a female as a sign of respect. Many times, if it's done now women find it disrespectful.
That is sad to me. I take my chances and still hold doors.

Warren G used this music track for "Regulate". Here's the story of the Regulators. The Lincoln County War was an Old West conflict between rival factions which began in 1878 in Lincoln County, New Mexico Territory, the predecessor of the state of New Mexico, and continued until 1881. The Lincoln County Regulators, or just the Regulators, were an American Old West deputized posse that fought in the Lincoln County War in New Mexico, during the late 19th century. They are well known for including Billy the Kid as a member. They were formed by small ranch owners and cowboys in Lincoln County, New Mexico, and their goal was to "regulate" any stealing of property from their ranches.
The main group of men in the Regulators were known as the “iron clad” and they were: Richard "Dick" Brewer, Frank McNab, Doc Scurlock, Jim French, John Middleton, George Coe, Frank Coe, Jose Chavez y Chavez, Charlie Bowdre, Tom O'Folliard, Fred Waite, Henry Newton Brown, and the bandit of all bandit's; Billy the Kid.

You asked what happened to the feels? It is still around in us older men. I still believe it is alive and well and should be expressed. What I've seen of this generation, though, if you as a man express your feelings that you're too sensitive and if you want to be close and cling to your woman, you're too clingy. I believe this is why men now have pulled away. They say toxic masculinity, but what truly is toxic about men being men and expressing themselves to their women? I agree this music showed emotion. Thanks for sharing. God bless you!

These were different times Ashley, and people cared a lot more back then both men and women... sad to say it but we are living in cold times. Great song and singer, loved your reaction...thanks.

The boys today haven't got the guts to let it all hang out. It's sad seeing everyone walk around with a big fat filter floating in front of them. Love the reaction sweetheart. Cheers.

The me to movement happened. You can’t even tell a woman how you feel about her these days without being accused of something.

I totally agree with the previous comments about the song "On My Own" with the great Patti LaBelle. One of my favorite duets of all time!

To answer your question at 4:11. This is what the fellas were like before gangsta rap came on the scene. Being a youngster in the 70s and 80s, I remember how motivated grown men were by a women.

    Listen carefully folks!
Warren G's "Regulate" (ft. Nate Dogg) sampled its groove from *this song*!! Respect.

Regulators - Mount Up! - Warren G and Nate Dog. they took the whole song and just put hip hop over it. the early 90's rappers knew how to sample the good stuff and put just as much fire over the music.
