Whenever I hear this beat drop I'm SO VERY pleased, whether it's Michael OR Warren. I was singing the Regulate right along with y'all. Thanks for the fun time.
Great jam! Michael McDonald's voice is instantly recognizable. He started off as a session singer on many classic albums, most notably Steely Dan's Aja album. He joined the Doobie Brothers and injected his jazzy/ soulful mix into their sound. His later solo work and collaboration s with other legends are also legendary. I saw him during his Motown album tour .....and he's phenomenal live.
I heard he was called in to help DLR on van havens song I'll wait" . Story goes David was stumped for lyrics so the producer called up michael macdonald to help out. And he came up with a few lines in it. But wasn't credited on the album. Was all worked out. And said he made more money of that 1/5 writers credit than all the Doobie bros money. Don't quote me but you can look it up.
That's Michael's sister Maureen singing backup. Also check out more from the Doobie Brothers when Michael was the lead singer. Also like some have said " On My Own " with Patti Labelle and " What A Fool Believes ".
When Warren G hit with this sample, I was late teens/early 20s and immediately loved it because I grew up with The Doobie Brothers and Michael MacDonald, and always loved this track. Check out Black Water, Takin it to the Streets, What a fool believes. You got your rockabilly, r&b, southern rock, and soul, all together. Music and food, bring us all together.

Michael McDonald is one righteous brother. Well, technically, a Doobie brother, but you know what I mean. 😆 Check out his duets with Patti Labelle, "On My Own" and Aretha Franklin, "Ever Changing Times". He's also done one with Toni Braxton, James Ingram, and many others. Man is a vocal/songwriting GOAT. Michael McDonald has an amazing voice! I love this song and that beat is classic! Nate Dog and Warren G did sample this beat! Michael McDonald also had an amazing career with the Doobie Brothers before his successful solo career!❤️❤️
Before Michael McDonald was with the Doobies, he did a lot of backing vocals for Steely Dan. Also lent his voice to other artists back in the 70's, 80's. He was busy back then and has several other colab's with well known artists from many genres.
This song was released in August 1982 on the Warner Bros. Records label. His sister Maureen McDonald is the female voice heard on the song. In 1975 Jeff Baxter, a guitarist for the Doobie Brothers, recommended that McDonald temporarily replace the band’s lead singer, Tom Johnston, who was ill at the time, on tour. The band was so impressed with McDonald’s musicianship that it invited him to become a full-time member. In the book Long Train Runnin’: Our Story of the Doobie Brothers (2022), bass guitarist Tiran Porter recalled, “The second I heard him open up his mouth…my mind was blown right there.” McDonald’s husky vocals and gospel-inflected keyboard style transformed the band’s feel-good rock and roll sound into a smooth, soulful R&B approach. As their lead vocalist, McDonald cowrote and performed on hit singles such as “Takin’ It to the Streets” (1976), “It Keeps You Runnin’ ” (1976), the multiple Grammy Award-winning “What a Fool Believes” (1979), “Minute by Minute” (1979), and “Real Love” (1980). Warren G used this music track for "Regulate". Here's the story of the Regulators. The Lincoln County War was an Old West conflict between rival factions which began in 1878 in Lincoln County, New Mexico Territory, the predecessor of the state of New Mexico, and continued until 1881. The Lincoln County Regulators, or just the Regulators, were an American Old West deputized posse that fought in the Lincoln County War in New Mexico, during the late 19th century. They are well known for including Billy the Kid as a member. They were formed by small ranch owners and cowboys in Lincoln County, New Mexico, and their goal was to "regulate" any stealing of property from their ranches. The main group of men in the Regulators were known as the “iron clad” and they were: Richard "Dick" Brewer, Frank McNab, Doc Scurlock, Jim French, John Middleton, George Coe, Frank Coe, Jose Chavez y Chavez, Charlie Bowdre, Tom O'Folliard, Fred Waite, Henry Newton Brown, and the bandit of all bandit's; Billy the Kid.
I love this! I heard this song while working overnights at The Home Depot...I was like...where's Warren G? But then I used Shazam to learn who did the original track and loved it ever since. I loved your Warren G references!
