Blog:
The MK7 Golf R is undoubtedly a performance-driven hot hatch that has won the hearts of driving enthusiasts around the world. With its sleek design, exhilarating performance, and impressive handling, it has cemented its place as one of Volkswagen's finest offerings. However, like any complex machine, the Golf R is not immune to certain issues that may arise over time. In this article, we'll delve into the most common problems faced by MK7 Golf R owners, equipping you with valuable knowledge to maintain and enjoy your prized ride for years to come.
1. Carbon Buildup in the Intake Valves:
One of the most prevalent issues reported by MK7 Golf R owners is carbon buildup in the intake valves. Direct-injected engines, like the Golf R's turbocharged four-cylinder powerhouse, are more susceptible to this problem. Over time, carbon deposits accumulate on the intake valves, leading to reduced performance, rough idling, and increased fuel consumption. Regular maintenance, such as periodic valve cleaning, can prevent this issue and ensure your Golf R continues to perform at its peak.
2. Haldex All-Wheel Drive System Faults:
The Golf R's sophisticated Haldex all-wheel-drive system is a key element of its impressive handling and traction capabilities. However, some owners have experienced issues with the Haldex system, such as premature wear of the Haldex pump or failure of the electronic control unit (ECU). Regularly checking and changing the Haldex fluid, as recommended by the manufacturer, can mitigate potential problems and prolong the system's lifespan.
3. Water Pump and Thermostat Failures:
Water pump and thermostat failures have been a concern for many MK7 Golf R owners. A malfunctioning water pump can result in engine overheating, while a faulty thermostat may lead to poor fuel efficiency and inconsistent temperature regulation. Regular coolant system inspections and timely replacement of worn components can help avoid these issues and safeguard your engine from potential damage.
4. High-Pressure Fuel Pump (HPFP) Problems:
The high-pressure fuel pump is crucial for supplying fuel to the direct-injection system in the Golf R's engine. Some owners have reported issues with the HPFP, leading to rough idling, misfires, and reduced power. Early detection and addressing any fuel system anomalies can prevent further damage to the engine and save you from costly repairs.
5. Electronic Gremlins:
Like many modern vehicles, the MK7 Golf R features an array of sophisticated electronics and sensors. While these systems enhance the overall driving experience, they can occasionally present challenges for owners. Problems such as sensor malfunctions, infotainment glitches, and electrical gremlins have been reported by some drivers. Regular software updates and diligent diagnosis by trained technicians can help resolve these issues and ensure a seamless driving experience.
Conclusion:
The MK7 Golf R is a fantastic hot hatch that blends performance, style, and practicality into one thrilling package. While it is not without its common problems, being aware of these issues and taking proactive measures can help you enjoy your Golf R to the fullest. Regular maintenance, timely inspections, and addressing any emerging problems promptly will keep your MK7 Golf R running smoothly on both the city streets and the open track. With proper care, your Golf R will continue to bring joy to your driving adventures for years to come.

Hey Calvin, What was the original plate on this R? Spec and mods seem identical to one I owned a few years back
@@asifbham4500CN65 PYL 👍
do i stand a chance if i am in a different continent?...
Calvin, any idea when your dropping the drive video? Want to see draggy times 😂
Rear wiper delete is one of those stupid trends that needs to die off imo
Didn’t know about the screw in the liner I just lowered mine the other day I’ll pop them screws out cheers for that !
Someone’s winning a really nice car with this one 👌🏻 glad you’re feeling better calvin. Looking forward to the drive of this
Will's the man . He's maybe expensive but boy he knows his stuff. Think the guy that sold it wasn't being totally up front.
Thanks @racingline for the bits they sponsored. How awesome. I run their stuff on my R 7.5 and love it.
Can people stop dumping their crap on Calvin 😂 well done all involved getting the R back up to standard 👌🏻
Lol it’s cool man. The previous owner sold me a lovely car it’s just needed a bit of love to get it up to scratch. The good thing is it gives us content and it’ll make a great prize for someone.
Thanks for your comment mate 🙌🙏🏼
I think the best way to go is buying a non-tuned or stock car with all service records. Think of it as buying a very expensive sports car.. that's the best strategy for me. I bought a Golf R used. bought at 60K miles and now has almost 100K, and two minor issues (total $300usd). in almost 40k miles.
just my experience
Was not expecting to see the racing line part of the video in this one video calv!! Quality great little link up that hats off to you all!! 👌
Awesome looking machine always had an eye for a gti been a bmw head I’ll always have a soft spot for one good to see you up n about lad 💪
Amazing car Calvin !!! Im a dreamcatcher but I'm seriously considering hitting the boost button for this car 😉
Good luck mate 🎉
I'm gonna boost as well for this one i think , a proper sorted car , respect to VRS and Racing line for this one ...and of course Calvin as well for getting it there .Hope your feeling better buddy ..
rotors: 40€ a piece
pads: 25€ per axle
pump + belt kit: 45€
thermostat case: 330€
front struts 40€/pc
rear struts 22€/pc
The Golf R parts are ridiculously cheap and there is no reason it wouldn't be.
VW used parts from heavier cars that don't look sporty but put comparable stress on the parts due to their mass.
BMW did this years ago with the first 325i...
Known Mat at racing line a very long time and he is car mad to say the least 😂. Great guys at racingline and been great to watch the business grow over the years.
Guys at vrs really go above and beyond. You get what you pay for guys!
Few bills from your garage and you could pay to have your own technician for a year as a salary
Forgot to calculate the tools and fixtures the tech would need
Any idea why a steering wheel shakes? Does the road force need to be down to a lb a tire
I heard a company bartek that do the metal water pump for the ea888 gen3 which is supposed to stop the leak.
Biryani from fuel station.. you in karachi bruv? 😂
i thought the same when i bought my mk7.5 R. 5 grand later and it now is a very nice car. good job i knocked 7k off the asking price and luckily the seller said ok. one question, water pump, when am i likely too need to change that.. my golf r 7.5 has 34k miles.
Anytime now...the water pump/thermostat in my Polo GTI went at 30k miles
when it starts leaking coolant
Happy new year nat wish you all the best for 2024 lovely review on this new A3 x
That's a really nice sorted car now..good effort from both parties..👌💪💪
Do you tell your customers that they have wheel spacers on the cars when they buy them? This will invalidate the insurance as it is a modification.
How do you know if there cam magnets need changing
Vcds and check you can find everything from oil pressure to camshaft position
Water pump on my wifes audi tt also went. Very common problem on VW Audi as my mechanic knew right away when i called him saying it was losing coolant lol that was last year and cost me £680 he is a independent audi garage.
Years ago My 1998 golf 1.8t gti water broke on the vw forecourt when I pulled up. Why don’t vw address this mess? Still ussr 2023+ 😮
Sound like the previous owner just ran it without any maintainance till he couldnt put up with any longer, otherwise known as a birmingham special 🤣🤣🤣 even left the private reg on
water pumps are one of the most expensive jobs to do..doesn't matter the brand ...it's a literal pain in the ass to get to them
Keep up the great work Calvin, you're doing a great job mate
the only show I've seen where they include the labour cost.
Calvin Calvin Calvin 😂 did you not notice the big grin on mateys face when you shook hands on £13500 lol, im surprised punters can have your pants down, you need to get someone else to buy the cars 😅
Love the channel and cheers for your content!
One thing I noticed is this is a Mk7 rather than a 7.5 and the cam solenoids where replaced without the cams (valves behind the cam magnets). I didn't think you could just replace these by themselves as VW created a new revision which is a different size preventing you from buying just these? If they were is their a place to buy these solenoids?
Why on earth is a Waterpump an £800 job ?!!
A big problem the thermostat housing is made out of plastic and they replace this with the pump. Both my Golf R's needed one and my RS3 has the same, covered under goodwill after just 5 years...Audi wanted £800....
If u done one u will understand
Because its a volkswagen, big job as everything is compacted as germans like to put stuff in stupid spots
Because that’s what a good reputable garage have to charge to make it worth their while I suppose ✅
@@user-zk6ox2kf9mcan be done with inlet in still, take fan out gives plenty of room done a few now
Calvin! Please show more of that E36 they got hiding in the back 👌
Do you not have mechanics that inspect vehicles prior to purchase?
Love RacingLine stuff :) Really want the Golf now then ever !!!!
I can agree about the intercooler but the exhaust and intake being “restrictive” just makes me laugh. I’ve seen cars pushing 500bhp with stock air box with different turbo inlet pipe which is actually what’s restrictive. As for the backbox it makes no difference. Downpipe is what counts.
Cracking car Calv, lots of work done on it 👍 someone’s going to be a very lucky person winning it 💯 I’m sure you’re meant to be resting…??? Take it easy mate, massive respect 💪💪
Very kind positive comment. Thank you mate 🙌
I’m liking this car. PlanetOfDreams it is. Even done the free boost. I’m hoping I win this!!! Then I can sell Calvin my m135i 😊
Thought i recognized that tuning guy matt, hes off campervan crisis show on tv
His had to change the whole brake discs and not just the pads.. i think people in the comments are a bit confused. Secondly the 850 for waterpump is way too expensive
Around £400 for genuine parts and consumables and 5 hours book time. So £850 is still cheaper than main dealer, they are north of a grand.
£700 for brakes 😅
Damn that sounds expensive
VW tax
For genuine vw golf r discs and pads all round its that much, that's why don't buy from vw, buy aftermarket and save money
@@TheCinderellaman10 I put EBC pads and discs on a T6 and seemed better than genuine not that cheap tho. But VW are a rip off. They don’t even make them they out source
😂
would you swap a mk7 gti for it cal ?? 😅
These cars still go for $25k and up in the USA, so not a bad deal at all. That price would get you a GTI SE with 80k miles on it here.
First time watching your videos- THANK GOD for subtitles lmaoooo. for first couple min I had 0 idea wtf your saying lol prob eating and talking doesn't help much haha
Good to see racing line putting things right for you and going above and beyond for the car, I doubt they would do this for your typical Joe Blogs tho probs just because it’s Calvin lol
Yea they’ve been brilliant, I’m very grateful. Definitely more to come with CCD x RacingLine 💯
Whats the issue with the ram air intake at stage 3? My car runs a ran air intake and bigger turbo elbow is there something im not aware of
Me two. I guess the foam will degrade and suck through the turbo
As far as I’m aware it’s not the air intake it’s the silicon intake hose which isn’t strong enough to cope with the boost. If you watch videos you’ll see that under max boost on a bigger turbo they collapse due to the suction which closes the airway slightly and negatively affects the power.
Is planet dreams uk only or can i win from The Netherlands?
What was the rattle in the last video????
17k dollars for a MK7 is pretty good even with this bumps and bruises. Cheers and good luck
17k gbp mate not dollars
VRS really do go to townnnnnn, id feel sick walking out with these bills
Sounds like a typical Golf R, absolute money pit. Owned one a few years back, definitely wouldn't want another one.
There are many cool videos on RUclips. But there are fewer cool RUclips channels and even fewer cool content creators and you have and are all that and more.
That's a lot of wonga parted with but as someone who owns VAG cars i know how it feels
Why don’t you take on your own technician. The amount you spend on labour over the last year alone you can set a person on, you’ve got room at Binca to put a workshop in…
Brilliant video calv 👍🏻🥇🥇
nice motor lads at racing line seem good lads two 👏
i've got a stage 2 mk7 running 410bhp if you'd be interested in another one for the channel calv👀👍🏼
Am I mistaken or did an intercooler, an intake and a software upgrade only add 15 bhp ?
It was already stage 2 but the car now performs properly with the correct hardware and now makes the correct numbers
Wow going to be some really lucky person to win this car its awsome great job calvin and all the guys
@OfficealCalvinCarDiaries who is the winner ?
Am so glad I just spent 20 bucks to boost my chances on the golf r 😅😅😅
Just ordered stuff from RaceLine very excited, looks like a good company
Stunning motor Calvin 👍🏻
I think you should check the cars with VRS before you buy them
Anyone able to tell me how you know if the cam magnets aren't doing their job properly? 🤔👍
I’d like to win my golf r being fixed and serviced at vrs, pretty much exactly the same jobs as this one needed
You'd think he'd get some discount, pfft. all the money he's poured into will. WOW. That's the problem when they know you have the cash, better off bring will with you before you buy anything in future, being too fair with the customers always cost you a few thousand after words. mental. Your so kind Cal, that you just justify it in your own kind way to yourself. And then call it content.
EXACTLY THAT 🔥
Stop putting spacers on everything 😂
Could you not have checked discs and pads before buying could have offered a lower price
Man these cars are a lot better priced over there. Here in the states you aren’t gonna touch a MK7 for much under 20k no matter the miles.
he got it at trade price
tbh if i paid 13500 for one i would be expecting a bit of a shitter
i paid 20k for mine this time last year though it was mint condition with low miles
You aren’t looking at all then
Got to love Will, top guy 👍🏻
Ive got same car same colour had it a year with no issues but why am i constantly shitting myself thinking summats gunna go wrong all the time 😂😂😂
Calvin think u need to invest in a in house workshop in the yard
Ahh Paul the software guy jumped over to Racingline from Revo. Interesting.
People change jobs all the time mate, it’s nothing crazy
Lovely video calv u do well for your supporters to
Brave man eating petrol station food
Hopefully I will be the winner of that beautiful golf r planet dreams. 😊 top man Calvin
The old owner has tucked you up there, Calv
£800 for a water pump? Get to fuck with that.
Poor matt is gonna watch this vid and think... 🤦♂️ ffs I say 'exactly that' a lot!!! 😅
Nice clean look to it defo like to win it 👍
🤞 for this one, I'd love to win it
😍 Come to dadda! Come to dadda! ✌🏻👍🏻🇬🇧
Will said they're not a racingline dealer, Matt said they are hm
99% of golf r drivers where made in the same lab
Yes lol grown in a test tube
Mind games for when you buy a car off Calvin and he says it’s happened to him
850£ for a water pump???
Includes the thermostat housing £350 for a plastic housing....
#BIRIYANIGANG 🔥
KIYAAAAAA MON! LOVING THE CALV & AMZ ADVENTURES!
Loving the content, from South Africa 🇿🇦
Love South Africa, from the content ❤
12:14 LOL
remember guys every car you tune will have problems... ITS NOT THE GOLF R PROBLEM
i bet u wish u had got the owner to fix b4 u buy..this repair game is to expensive
Great vid, Matt from racingline looks familiar. Was he on tv a few years back tuning and restoring old vw's beetles and campers.
Cracking car would absolutley love to win it!
I'm considering remapping my R with Racingline at some point. Need to sort my brakes out before I do. Great little insight on Racingline HQ.
Don't go to them!! Go and see will at VRS
Go and see unicorn
Racing Line did my partners Golf. Great service and very friendly. I’m sure VRS would be just as good but I can’t fault Racing Line.
Looks mega, was nice before but now….
Y doesn't he have all the replaced parts to show u everytime I think it's strange
I can buy a water pump for my 13 plate focus st for £60 lmfao.... It might not be as fast but seriously.. Performance for money and reliability you can't beat it tbh
Yeah I’ve had S3’s and shit, money pits, gone back to cheap and cheerful, so much more liberating now not having to worry about big bills coming to bite you.
Just had somone try to say it was you and that i had won something
You can’t enter if you aren’t from uk
