I bought the lens following this video. Thanks! All you said is spot on. One Thing I am very impressed with is the metal lens hood. Fujifilm should take note. The Viltrox 23mm lens hood is beautiful, high quality engineering. It is lightweight metal, super fine finished and it fits to the lens securely with a surgical 'click'. It is a well machined quality tool. I've just spent £1,200 British Pounds on the Fujifilm 50-140mm f2.8 and it is an excellent lens, but the supplied hood is absolute pants. It is a plastic floppy fit piece of ill-fitting junk compared to Viltrox hood. I think that Viltrox could make an absolute killing if they manufactured replacement metal hoods (of the quality they supply with their 23mm) for the whole range of Fujifilm X-Mount lenses. I'd pre-order now if they were to be available.
Absolutely Amazing lens! I just did some resolution nit-picking on this 23mm Viltrox lens vs my 16-80mm Fuji zoom lens and the Viltrox blows it away. I know its a prime vs a zoom but the difference is substantial! I'm glad I bought the Viltrox.
I bought the X-Pro1 and a XF 35 1.4 just for fun and was blown away. Then I tried the Canon FD 50 1.4 and it’s amazing as well. They I started to invest in primes: I bought an XF 16 2.8 and now the Viltrox 23 1.4. Now I have an awesome kit!
I really appreciate all of your reviews. I have a question, If you have to choose only one 23mm, which one would you pick ? Fuji or viltrox for photography.
Do you need weather sealing? Or not at all? I think that is where you should start if you are considering one of the 23mm. But I would say you don't lose in any situation 🙏🔥
There is a version 2 or mark in now available. It looks quite similar except the model number is silver text where the original is yellow. Is that the only real difference?
This is e very sharp lens from f5.6 for landscape photography into the corners. Otherwise it’s bitingly sharp in the center. Chromatic aberration at f1.4 is an issue. But a photography noob wouldn’t notice it anyway. This is a fantastic lens!
Love your reviews. I purchased the Viltrox 23mm and 13mm. I CANNOT believe how fuji rips people off with their lens prices. I’m not playing their game….
Both the Viltrox 23mm 1.4 and Fujifilm 23mm f2 impressed you, so I was wondering how they compare in your experience? I am considering getting either of these lenses given they are around the same price point.
@@KenTheoriaApophasis Viltrox 23mm vs Fuji 23mm f2? Both of these lenses are in my radar for my first prime lens since a new Viltrox is within the same price range as a used Fuji f2.
Thanks for the review Ken. I will consider this lens as the Fujifilm 23mm f2 and f1.4 lenses both have issues that prevent me forking out my hard earned money on them. If I do pull the trigger on this then my own review will follow in due course.
In 2024, I can get the Fuji 23mm 1.4 R (Mk1) for around $100 more used vs a new Viltrox 23mm 1.4. The question is the Viltrox as good as the $100 more Fuji 23mm 1.4 R?
I just bought this lens and uysed it on my xt3 to shoot in low light in downtown last night. A lot of my pics turned out fuzzy but that's because I was shooting moving subjects 30 yards away with ISO at 1250. But the good pics I got were awesome. There was some CA around the street lamp halos at wide open, but knocked down to 1.8 eliminated any fringing. I'm stoked about this lens.
Thanks for another in-depth review. I have been adapting the sigma 18-35mm F1.8 on my X-T2 and it replaced my 23mm F2 but I miss having a small lens that isn't twice as heavy as the body. This is a great price point to offer a more functional alternative to the 18-35 for my kit and the image quality and AF don't disappoint at all.
Hi Cameron. I was looking at getting the Fringer pro 2 adapter and the sigma 18-35mm for video work. Might consider getting this prime instead. Would love to know how you get on!
@@johnallan9548 Hey John, its tough to recommend for or against. I guess starting out the most obvious cons are weight and af noise. having a +900G lens isn't awful but when its adapted and hung farther away from the body it works against the ergonomics even more and I need to use a grip to be able to still hold my camera comfortably (also know you will need a beefy gimbal to run this) but the added weight actually works great if your goal is to rig up your camera (it adds so much dead weight just the lens and a top handle stabilizes quite a bit) and the other thing to consider is the AF noise might be picked up even with a shotgun mic placed on camera (the af basically overpowers what the internal mics pick up) so off-camera audio is pretty important for interviews or long talking segments with this. as for why I still use it after months and many other lenses (16-80 F4, 23 F1.4, 23 F2, 35 F2, and the kit lens are what I've owned and sold from fuji) is that the image quality is clinical which allows me to really boost anything in the image without it getting muddy as quickly. having F1.8 in a zoom range that covers several primes with comparable or superior image quality is great and enough reason for me to hold onto it. my goal is to get the 33mm F1.4 from viltrox and if the AF and image quality are good enough I'm either going to shelf the Sigma just for more professional work or sell it entirely and pick up the 23mm F1.4 as well. for roughly the same price you only get 2 focal lengths, but you get 2/3's of a stop of light as well as a much more discreet and travel-friendly option.
Hi it might be a stupid question. But I've been a A7III shooter and mainly used Sigma 35/1.4 art for all my pics. I know u can't compare my upcoming X-T3 with the Sony but would it be fair to say that this viltrox is as sharp as the Sigma or is it significant worse in sharpness. Beacuse I want to find the best 23mm for my XT-3 camera.
The Sigma is probably sharper but not significantly so. Of course I'd expect it to be better. I've owned both the 23mm f2 (for sale) and 23mm f/1.4 (sold) Fuji lenses and, while I don't have the 23mm Viltrox, I have the 33mm Viltrox. The 23mm f/1.4 Fuji was my favorite lens when I owned it but the downside was that the AF was loud and slower. I sold it when I moved away from Fuji for a couple years. I just bought back into the Fuji system recently and picked up a 23mm F2 when I did. That lens was smaller, lighter, had weAther sealing, and had much better AF but, while the IQ was good, it didn't have that magic the 1.4 had. From all accounts so far the Viltrox is like a combo of the two with a couple of its own quirks. The build quality is nice but below both the Fujis. The AF is on par with the F2 and much better than the Fuji 1.4. Size wise it fits between both. The click-less aperture ring is not the best and the fact that the aperture transitions are smooth kind of defeat the purpose of having a click-less ring in the first place. So what's the best 23mm? From a practical standpoint the Viltrox is probably the best buy as it's the least expensive, has great AF, has solid IQ, and is relatively compact and light. If you want the most compact package or need weather sealing then the F2 is the winner. The Fuji 1.4 is not a bad buy if price is not a major consideration but just note it's AF is loud and slower than the other two. It does have great IQ , good build quality, and the best manual focus implementation.
Hi, I recenntly saw a video where they say this lens has problems and if there's a source of light in the frame, (they say), it produces strong flare and changes the colors. There are more than one video talking about that. I was going to buy this lens before stumbling on those videos. Well, I trust you and I think that you would have detected this issue in your sample, and if you didn't, it's because it has not that issue. But, it can be the first series , first generation or may be a few lenses had this issue, may be a production issue. Are you aware of this ? Do I have to buy the much more expensive and slow focus Fuji, but optically excellent ? Thank you.
something to note about the Click Less Aperture is that the aperture blades are not smooth b/c they are controlled electronically by the camera. This took me a couple weeks to figure out that little detail and I'm glad I did before ordering for video use. It makes no sense that they provide a click less aperture ring and the aperture is not smooth. still an awesome lens but note to anyone buying for video because of said click less aperture
@@theadventurenomads7011 So for Photography it's spot on for everything you could possibly need, you may want to correct some color fringing and decrease vignetting in post, but that's very easy. For Video is also works very well. Auto focus works great, I would recommend getting a variable ND filter for it though cause the aperture ring kinda jumps in lighting, although they possibly could fix that with a firmware update in the future. I definitely think the lens is worth the money, I recommended it to a couple of my friends who all shoot fuji, but it still has to pass the test of time. But it's a very pleasant and sharp lens, I really enjoy the image and video quality.
Hi how you doing ? , I see tokina 23mm f1.4 Fuji is out. A comparison with Viltrox and Fuji 23mm would be a blessing from someone with your experience and knowledge in the field of lenses.
There is a comparison of all three Viltrox vs Tokina lenses on the RUclips. They are the same lenses in different housing. Tokinas are quite a lot more expensive. So, no point of choosing Tokinas over Viltroxes.

Purchased this lens from B&H because of your review. Now waiting for them to make a 16mm. May not be as sharp as Fuji, but as long as it’s pretty close, it would be a buy at their prices
I'm not sure what I should get for traveling (hiking, long walks). X-S10 + 18-55 /16-80 + 23mm 1.4 / 33mm 1.4 ? Need to made decisions.. I probably should have one zoon lens, and I heard only good things about the 16-80, but it is bigger and heavier than the 18-55. And the primes.. I want nice shallow DOF which the 33mm can probably provide better than the 23mm, but the 33mm is very limiting while traveling. With the 23mm I can just leave it on and it will be good (focal length wise) for most shots. How to choose...
I recently got the X-S10 & 16-80 and it’s a fabulous combination. Currently using it on a trip to Amalfi. Does everything well. I’ll be adding the Viltrox 23 1.4 to my kit when I get back - and that’s it, I’ll be set.
looking to go on a roadtrip later this week, still missing a proper travel prime for my x-h1, the 35/1.4 is too long, the 18-55 i don't like. think i'm gonna order this one and just take this x-h1 + 23/1.4 combo with me. nice and minimalistic with tons of low light capability.
Have you ever heard about a fault with this lens by way of a 'grinding' sound when used in video mode...? Seriously thinking of buying one as I can get one in the UK for just £165!!
I was happy with the lens until I installed the new firmware AF 23/1.4 XF V1.1.2. Now I have the problem that the lens causes the camera to restart every second. I tried it with the X-T1 and the X-H1 (the AF 23/1.4. does cause the problem, other lenses from fujinon do not). I had the firmware V1.0.9 before and the lens worked fine (some time the autofocus blocked - this was the reason for installing the new firmware). I tried to restore the old version - I now have still the problem. The lens causes always the camara to reset, there is no way to get the “old” lens back. Is there a way to reset all stored firmware?
Thanks for the review. Anything to say about fidelity of this lens compared to your standard and compared to both fujifilm 23mm? please, say something about
Would it not be important to discuss the flicker when changing aperature while also discussing the de-clicked nature of it respective to video? Essentially the smoothness you gain from it being de-clicked is lost by the crazy flicker created when changing the aperature. I feel this is a big miss in this review.
@@joekaruri thats a fair enough idea, except for the fact that he specifically mentioned the declicked aperature as a benefit to videographers (but then didnt mention the flicker)
Seems like it's almost the perfect lens for me except for the chromatic aberration at 1.4 - which is awful. Would want this for nightitme street photography, so plenty of shooting at 1.4 to keep iso down. The new (in 2023) Sigma 23mm 1.4 looks the goods
When you do the X-T4 review please take a closer look at the display-mechanism/hinge. Played with the camera yesterday and to me it felt very fragile. Panasonic G9 and old Nikons seem to have a better hinge (or whatever you call it) ... thanks! 😉 I really liked the X-T4, pretty camera ... Viltrox lenses would be interesting too
I had an Olympus and a Lumix G9, and I have a Canon 90D all of them with the side flip out screen. I have the XT4. There is no issue or real difference in the feel or confidence the Fuji gives you compared to the others. Its simply a non issue.

I got this lens on the way from Adorama. I’m hoping this will give me super nice low light capabilities at 1.4. The 16-55mm is great but man for every day just run and gun it’s insanely heavy!
That clickless aperture is a deal breaker. Its not even suited for video cause its still electronically controlled and does not close smoothly but rather in increments as if it was clicked aperture. What the hell was Viltrox thinking here... what is the point of clickless if theres no smooth blade control. (see 'Ian Worth' review how aperture behaves on this lens). Also, corner bokeh quality on XF is miles better.
it's not a deal breaker because it still works like a normal lens in auto. people give you extra options and the normal option works flawlessly and you should not complain. it's extra
If you cannot use it on the X-Pro3, this doesn't bode well for the quality control and general design quality of Viltrox. This is a great shame, because we do need a new 23mm 1.4 for Fuji.
This guy says that this lens has NOT scratched his mount, when Viltrox THEMSELVES say on their website to not use this lens with the x-pro3!!! Wtf?! And there are NO videos showing the lens attached up-close. This so fucking annoying!..

I recently got the X-S10 & 16-80 and it’s a fabulous combination. Currently using it on a trip to Amalfi. Does everything well. I’ll be adding the Viltrox 23 1.4 to my kit when I get back - and that’s it, I’ll be set.
Viltrox 23 1.4 @ F2 sharper than Fuji 23 F2?
Thank You! You just helped to decide my next lens purchase. 👍👍👍
Is it much bigger than the 23mm f2?
looking to go on a roadtrip later this week, still missing a proper travel prime for my x-h1, the 35/1.4 is too long, the 18-55 i don't like. think i'm gonna order this one and just take this x-h1 + 23/1.4 combo with me. nice and minimalistic with tons of low light capability.
Have you ever heard about a fault with this lens by way of a 'grinding' sound when used in video mode...? Seriously thinking of buying one as I can get one in the UK for just £165!!
I just bought mine today for that price (on Facebook). It might actually be the same person who's selling it! :-D
Antonio, did you buy it from Lee in Chesterfield...?
@@milesofsmilesphoto hahahaahahahah of course! How bloody random is this?!? 😂😂😂
Antonio do you have the Viltrox 85mm? I bought this lens last week too 😁
@@milesofsmilesphoto I’ve had it but for the type of portraits I shoot, it’s too long. But it’s definitely a great deal for the price!
Anything to say about fidelity of this lens compared to your standard and compared to both fujifilm 23mm? please, say something about
How about the clickless aperture. Isnt there a big chance of accidentely touching the ring and change aperture?
Would it not be important to discuss the flicker when changing aperature while also discussing the de-clicked nature of it respective to video?
Essentially the smoothness you gain from it being de-clicked is lost by the crazy flicker created when changing the aperature. I feel this is a big miss in this review.
It's because he's not a videographer nor does he pretend to be one.
His words, not mine.
Would you say Viltrox tops Tamron as far as third party lens manufacturers go?
Thanks for the review. Helpful as always. Could you please comment on how well or poorly the Viltrox lenses work with the OVF on the X-Pro
I love the 33mm
Is this lens compatible with the XT-1? Online I've seen lists of compatibility with many x-mount cameras,, but I haven't seen the XT-1 listed.
Compatible with all X-Mount cameras including the XT1
Now it's out for Nikon z mount DX. Who also don't have anything like it for dx. For both f mount and z mount users.
It is really nice lens for 330$ you get Fujifilm Xpro-3 damaged too.
Viltrox lenses would be interesting too
i already have many many many videos on the XT4, ive done that already
I had an Olympus and a Lumix G9, and I have a Canon 90D all of them with the side flip out screen. I have the XT4. There is no issue or real difference in the feel or confidence the Fuji gives you compared to the others. Its simply a non issue.
@@RockyColaFizz ok, thank you!
But does it have a hotspot when used for infrared photography?
Would you get a Viltrox tattoo? Just wondering
Alessandro LinuxBSD Understood
how does it perform in Infrared?
Thank you man!
Any guess as to which mark ii lens Fuji will release this year?
i dunno actually
Thank you. I ended up getting the 33 and 23.
How do you like them?
Nice review. Too big on the x-t20 or OK?
I think it's ok. I bought this lens for my XT20 2 days ago.
@@thuyxu876 Thanks. Do you think it's a bit less discreet for street photography than the Fuji 23mm f2? This is the other lens I'm considering but it's about £150 more here in the UK. Image quality wise I think the Viltrox might be a bit better with the f1.4.
I've been thinking about this lens for a week now. :) Good thing I came across this video. Thank you! I saw someone online selling this lens for $320 (Philippines). I'm definitely buying this weekend. Thanks again! More power to your channel!
How do you like the lens?
Torn between 33mm and 23 mm, i have 16mm 1.4 ?
Thanks for the review Ken. I am thinking of buying the 80mm fuji with the teleconverter 1.4x. Can you tell me if there is image quality loss when using the teleconverter? Do you think that the quality at the same focal length of the 50-140 is better?
Believe me you wont be disappointed in the quality of the Fuji 80mm -1x4
Is the new Viltrox 56 good ?
YUP!!!!!
@@AxelFoley-sb5re yeah i got it myself for christmas, can confirm yeah its great :)
Thanks for the review. Could you possibly do a review of the Viltrox 13mm f1.4 when that comes out. I was hoping to get that lens for video.
there is a (v2) at B&H?
Oh (v2) is a lens designed not to scratch the Pro2 or 3
I really hope viltrox will produce a 14 mm or 12 mm x mount. 23 mm 1.4 is on my list, I waited for your review.
There's a Viltrox 13mm f1.4 coming in 2021 (fujirumours website)
Maisnam Sid fuck yeaaaah
Viltrox has a 16/2?
superb review as usual. Thanks you so much for sharing!
Is this lens the equivalent of 35mm focal length in a full frame or its really a 23mm field of view?
The lens does not dictate the field of view. It’s the camera that does.
Yes it is.
23mm*1.53 = 35mm. So, yes it will give a fov equal to a 35mm full frame equivalent.
I want to go look at it on line, but am sure it is back ordered by now. Thanks again ken 😂.
First time I see you moving from same spot. I thought you were attached to that chair
I want to know if it would work on the xpro1, If it does , I want two.
Anybody having issues with this lens sitting slightly loose in the mount? I use it on xt3. It's caused focusing issues and I have to remove lens and put it back on to fix.
I love the 23-35mm focal length. I got the canon 22 f2 emf instead. I do love a pancake lens. Curious to try the Viltrox tho.
Ken. First off thanks for the review. I bought this lens on eBay because of you. As I look at it right now. It says I bought it from Ken Wheeler LOL. Dude did I buy your extra 23mm lens???? 😂
Thanks for sharing
Theoria Apophasis thank you for the great price! Tested it a the last 2 hours with my dog and loved it! You’re the man
You cut us short on that intro music. lol! Keep it coming! 👍
Nearly 90 degrees, here... I'm freezing...
Whuuuut
Should I sell my 23mm f2 wr for it?
i never tell anyone to go sell stuff
@@KenTheoriaApophasis right, I forgot about that.
I think this is the 23mm lens I'm looking for. Fuji 23mm f1.4 is too big and the f2 is soft at close distance.
I have the Viltrox lens and love it!!
I had both Fuji 23 f1.4 and Viltrox 23mm f1.4
Sharpness at f1.4 Viltrox all day..Fuji was a dissapointment!
AF Viltrox, even in darkness!
Price? Robbery vs a steal
Is is true that the upcoming Tokina lenses are just rebranded Viltrox?
i heard that, seems so
Gotta get this to complete my Viltrox collection
I got this lens on the way from Adorama. I’m hoping this will give me super nice low light capabilities at 1.4. The 16-55mm is great but man for every day just run and gun it’s insanely heavy!
Nice review as always. I think they need to release a 12mm
I am under the impression that the IBIS works differently on different lenses. Can you speak to what stop it goes to on this lens?
Has anyone made a accurate lens profile in Capture One for this lens? I do enjoy broadcast and respect your opinions. Thank you.
I will sell my 23 1.4 Fuji lens and get this one. I can't for the 56mm
Did many, and also Ian Worth, mention it behaved the same on XF Fuji lens?
it's not a deal breaker because it still works like a normal lens in auto. people give you extra options and the normal option works flawlessly and you should not complain. it's extra
Brilliant fair review 👍
Looking good Kenneth! Hugs from Oz man. Greg
thank you!
If you cannot use it on the X-Pro3, this doesn't bode well for the quality control and general design quality of Viltrox. This is a great shame, because we do need a new 23mm 1.4 for Fuji.
im using it NOW on the Xpro3, so nonsense
@@KenTheoriaApophasis thats good news
Cold huh brother if you come to my place it's literally 42 degrees c but outside house is like 50c
Ne damo svetinje!
No sample shots?
This guy says that this lens has NOT scratched his mount, when Viltrox THEMSELVES say on their website to not use this lens with the x-pro3!!! Wtf?! And there are NO videos showing the lens attached up-close. This so fucking annoying!..
Was hoping you would do this review. I woke up early and there it was. With some hair and a beard you'd be a tattoed neo-platonic Santa Claus.
I'm boycotting Chinese products but I will make a few exceptions.
I got the Minolta 24mm F2.8 MD W.ROKKOR instead😂for $150
Are you happy with this lens? I am thinking about this one for my Fuji. Thanks.
AT Hiker yes, it is a sharp lens, and also good for video. The only downside is the contrast at 2.8 is a bit low, but that doesn't bother me.
To be honest this Viltrox 23 1.4 is not cheap lens, in China cost 280 USD!!!
no, its very cheap
@@KenTheoriaApophasis Yeah, its much cheaper then original 23/1.4, but in general its not cheap, I think its will be cheap for 150 USD. We see inside 2 aspherical lenses and 2 LD lenses, maybe this 4 special elements increased price. In China this lens has very good sales, as I can see by statistic.
@@KenTheoriaApophasis Christopher Frost tested this 23mm viltrox and said its a better then original Fujifilm 23/1.4 lens. Even sharper too... Probably we will see soon some other lenses by Viltrox...
@@kobakakhidze100 Yes, the production price has increased. But the selling price usually does not correspond to it. Zooms with many elements are often cheaper than simple lenses ...
And yes, Viltrox is cheap for $ 300. Let's be glad that it doesn't have the inscription Nikon or Zeiss would be several times more expensive :-)
Did you just review a chinese lens ?
i have 1000s of lens reviews, so no, your ignorant comment is absurd
@@KenTheoriaApophasis well this is a chinese lens. The number of lens reviews you have done is irrelevant.
