I was completely confused until you mentioned Kegels, and suddenly everything made sense. Thanks for this comparison, very informative! I have to admit, even as a bit of a techie myself, I fell for marketing and believed more zones automatically meant better HDR performance. There is clearly more to it than that, and obviously the backlight dimming algorithm plays a very large role in overall performance. So again, thanks!
is it though, they have a problem with light bleed into the black bars when there is a light near the black bar, sammy TV's dont which, for me this is more distracting for some people that black crush. Better getting an OLED.

How much value are these tvs really when all you're really paying for is good sdr and half done hdr. The quantum dot layers are cheaply done too, producing very noticeably less color than pricey rivals. Mini-leds are much higher in zone count on these chinese giants but they're distributed evenly across the panel so there isn't much benefit to zone smoothness like they advertise (cheaper for them) and the algorithm of aggressive blooming suppression dumbing down the tvs true capabilities. Don't even get me started on the poor effort of maintaining accuracy with different window sizes, even samsung doesn't do it. Lcds are a scam more than they're worth in general.. oleds might have increased in cost a lot, but against how bad these lcds have become, the cost is now somewhat justified.

Hopefully you'll do another dedicated video comparing the X95L to various OLEDs because in your side-by-side comparisons it actually looked closer to the reference monitor in dark scenes than any of the OLEDs you've shown in these type of comparisons. As you know, many OLEDs either crush some shadow detail as shown in your Revenant clip or raise it above reference like on the Sony OLED models. You could also show the advantages that these type of LCDs have on dark uniformity (lack of vertical streaking) and the cleaner dark presentation without adding noise or dithering present on OLEDs. Thanks.
14:26 Thanks so much for comparing it to an OLED. Please consider a comparison video regarding different use cases with the A95L vs. X95L. @community: would you also like to watch that?
I think being able to see the same content on the reference monitor and the competing TVs made it clear that the X95L is better which is shocking given the smaller number of dimming zones. This is an incredible review of all TVs in the comparison. In the US, the X95L only comes in 85 inches. Is there a plan to review the step down model, the X93L? I'm guessing its performance falls between the X90L and X95L but where does it fall compared to the competition?
I have Samsung QN90B, the scene at 1:25 if local dimming set to high, it will crush small details in dark area. But when I set local dimming to low, it reveals more details just like X95L.
@@99tophunterIt seems like he's saying anyone can choose what to tweak to make it look better... I own a Sony TV yet Im questioning if this was a paid review.
I used to think this too, even disabled local dimming on my old TV and just put up with crap black levels as I hated the obvious zone switching/bloom But now I have a TCL C835 with 360 dimming zones which compared to new models is practically nothing.. and holy hell it blew me away Sure it struggles on star fields as expected but otherwise handles zone transitions beautifully, even scrolling white credits on a pure black background looks amazing. It's significantly brighter than my 55B9 OLED that I use on PC too, but for now the OLED still wins for colour saturation and especially pixel response. VA smear is not something I can go back to, especially given how much worse it seems to be on large displays compared to regular sized PC monitors.. But, that said, in a few years when I eventually move beyond this 2019 OLED I am likely leaving OLED behind completely
You start to wonder whats going on with Mini LED TVs with over 1000s of dimming zones and they cant even keep the letterbox bars black. Too bad that the X95L doesnt come in 55 inch
yep, will be my next one. Always hard to see anything on my AF8 without closing shutter at daylight...btw, love your channel, best out there in this area! thx
I feel the X95L might be finally worth swapping my ZD9 for. The ZD9 is brilliant but starting to have some minor panel issues and doesn't have hdmi 2.1. Let's see what A95l looks like.
After the revising the backlight control from last year and increasing the brightness plus hdr impact I’d say the 75 would be a fantastic z9d successor
At CES Hisense showed it did away with back light zones. They use a micro LED panel with over 2000 LED's, that all work on there own. Please have a video on this.
The local dimming algo superioirity of Sony goes back well over a decade. I still have a W905 that for bluray/1080p gives many a modern TV a run for its money. The beauty of Sony's dimming is that it can barely be seen working and is super consistent, this is essential for not getting pulled out of content for me. A hint of bloom around very infrequent subtitles is nothing in the grand scheme
2017 to 2022 would have to disagree with you there my friend. Their local dimming algorithm may be great, but when they are putting 60 zones on a 75 in tv, the overall performance has sucked for years. The x95k was the first decent LCD from a local dimming performance standpoint since the 940e...
yes this vincent almost seems sponmsored. they are charging double just for the sony name, when they an really use more than 70 dimming ior fald on lower models well over 1500...@@jogo8261
We only have X95L TV's in the USA available in the 85-inch size. The 65-inch we have available is the X93L. Maybe you have more sizes in England/the UK?
Any information about that sony sell this year the same panels on the different sizes, not like last year 65, 75 inch X95K TCL Panels and on 85 inch X95K the better AUO Panels ?
The processing is better. But the picture quality would be better still if they combined that processing with twice as many dimming zones. Given the prices they ask, there's really no excuse for not doing so. (FWIW I am a Sony fan who owns the A80K)
how does game mode look? as the native contrast is lower, with a laid-back dimming system during game mode I'm afraid it doesn't look as contrasty in dark scenes? QN95C you reviewed has more dimming zones and contrast and yet..
This why I buy the Japanese brands ,I have Panasonic LZ2000, Sony A95k and 8k jvc projector, they take movie processing seriously, and especially Panasonic and jvc you don't have to worry about your tv getting updated to fix the image and then brake something else ,Panasonic and jvc no updates to fix the image after owning them for almost 2 years lg and Samsung take notes .
14:41 Wow, does OLED really struggle this much with black crush in dark scenes? The fact that the background trees are just gone is wild to me... Is this just a major outlier, or is this common for really dark content on OLEDs?
So what is the overall rankings between all this tvs I am trying to decide which on of these tvs to get this year???? I am upgrading this year from my 6 year old tv, and I really don’t understand which one of these to get….
I've noticed this with Apple's XDR displays. Not the most zones, but quite good algorithm to handle blooming. Though, I do with that number of zones was a good measure because it's very difficult (without great reviews like Vincent's) to know what mini LED performance will be like across brands and models.
This video just reaffirms what I've suspected to be the case this year with the X95L compared with other mini-Led brands. I've always believed the dimming zone count and even the contrast ratios is a bit of spec marketing ploy to sway prospective buyers from one brand to other. The secret sauce does seem to be the processing which no matter the reviewer all agree, SONY is the leader with its processing.
The Sony seems to ramp up/ramp down the backlight over like 0.2 or 0.3 seconds with the subtitles at 2:53 and that is TERRIBLE it should instantly adjust not leave a huge grey patch on a black background for 0.3 seconds after the white subtitle disappears.
I wonder if the samsung and LG mini LED TV have higher ceilings. Meaning with firmware update thanks to AI training using calibrated model like HX310 etc they can gett better tuning of the dimming zones offering more fidelity than 480 ones
The real truth is despite lg owners claiming lg has the best shadow detail and no black crush they’re full of shit clearly. Woled suffers from the same black crush as rgb oled. While qd oled is better it still has black crush but the key difference being you can turn on contrast enhancer for the darkest scenes and still have a good picture while there’s nothing you can do with the g3 without lifting the blacks to being completely washed out and looking like a green mess. This is a known issue to anyone but lg owners who are in compete denial and will fight you claiming it’s not black crush you’re seeing 😂
@@rahb2096 but vincent's near black gamma measurements matched the reference values quite well. Seems really contradictory Shadow Details on lg woled tvs can be lifted by adjusting the low ire values of the white balance controls.
So black friday 2023 has 85"X95L for 3500 and A90J 83" for 3350 prices.. Which one to go for when watching movies in light controlled room (meaning dark) at 10.5 feet viewing distance? Any major difference with experience (size/PQ/HDR impact)?
After watching this video and reading other comments online, I think it’s fair to say that Sony has mastered its local dimming algorithm, which together with its class-leading XR processor make Sony’s premium LEDs worth the extra cash. If I watching TV in the daytime or in a bright room, this would be my first choice. For those of us who prefer Dolby Vision over HDR10, and watch TV in dimly-lit rooms, opting for the A80L or A95L makes more sense. The 65 inch A95L is gonna have a retail price of $3,499 in the US, so if Sony can stay within range of Samsung and LG by a couple hundred dollars then we can expect a competitive prices as the G3 and A95L go down in price. Samsung has already taken a couple hundreds off the A95C
Do you think Sony will update the mediatek chip and the TV processor for the 2024 models? As in using a new name other than XR processor, and having four HDMI 2. ports? I feel Sony will have a new processor next year because it is about the same time window when they upgrade.
I just bought the good old X65K in 65 inch (which is pretty similar to the new X65L) for just 1900 bucks ! It's a really great TV. Better than the rest ! Upscaling, motion handling and near black details could not be any better !
The conclusion people should arise isn’t that less zones is better, or “imagine what they could achieve with more zones”…it’s that there is actually a sweet spot between number of zones, performance and compromise, and that refinement takes a lot of “know how”, development and testing.
But if Sony can do so much with fewer zones, why not ratchet up the zones and do even better? Is adding zones very costly or is there some other issue with adding zones?
@jc2126: What @dubsynczz said is correct. More dimming zones require more LEDs + more advanced controller, which drives up the cost. It just doesn't make business sense, when Sony (or any other company) can just buy OLED panels with pixel-level light control at a cheaper price...
@@hdtvtest I love the brightness of my Z9G and Z9K. the blooming is the only thing that really bothers me. I thought more zones with Mini LED would solve that issue.

How much value are these tvs really when all you're really paying for is good sdr and half done hdr. The quantum dot layers are cheaply done too, producing very noticeably less color than pricey rivals. Thanks.
They are two different technologies so little use in comparison, however he did compare against G3.
Little use? It's the most natural choice to compare when trying to decide which kind of TV tech you would like to buy.
Compare edge lit and full array. No point comparing with oled, will win every time.

Finally went for a xr65x95lu based on your reviews and based on my living room ie being a bright room, thanks Vincent
In US X95L only available in 85" would like to know how the X93L compares to it.
I used to think this too, even disabled local dimming on my old TV and just put up with crap black levels as I hated the obvious zone switching/bloom
But now I have a TCL C835 with 360 dimming zones which compared to new models is practically nothing.. and holy hell it blew me away
Sure it struggles on star fields as expected but otherwise handles zone transitions beautifully, even scrolling white credits on a pure black background looks amazing.
You start to wonder whats going on with Mini LED TVs with over 1000s of dimming zones and they
cant even keep the letterbox bars black.
Too bad that the X95L doesnt come in 55 inch
TCL qm8 (US only) has no such trouble. It has double the dimming zones of the European c845.

wow... the X95L gets really close to the reference monitor. I hope you get your hand on the new Hisense ULED X TV for comparison :)
At CES Hisense showed it did away with back light zones. They use a micro LED panel with over 2000 LED's, that all work on there own. Please have a video on this.
Will there be a G3 vs X95L review in the coming months?
I use subtitles on ALL movies, so it wouldn't be infrequent here. That's mainly the reason why I prefer OLED these days.
How does it rate versus last year’s X95K? It might be a great bargain, having in mind current discounts
We only have X95L TV's in the USA available in the 85-inch size. The 65-inch we have available is the X93L. Maybe you have more sizes in England/the UK?
Hence why I like my X95J, Panasonic or Sony for me as I always go for accuracy.
When they make a TV with 1000 dimming zones they cant sold every year a new model With 100-150 zones more 😂
Happening now Bravia 9
how does game mode look? as the native contrast is lower, with a laid-back dimming system during game mode I'm afraid it doesn't look as contrasty in dark scenes? QN95C you reviewed has more dimming zones and contrast and yet..
X95L is the way to go
I'm still loving my Sony 930E 65" the picture is phenomenal for movies & gaming 6yrs later lol.
Alright, Vincent "squeezing in" (see what I did there) Kegel exercise joke FTW! 🤣
The G3 seems to be crushing some background detail on the Revenant scene.
Seems that way.
So what is the overall rankings between all this tvs I am trying to decide which on of these tvs to get this year????
I am upgrading this year from my 6 year old tv, and I really don’t understand which one of these to get….
for high end LCD go with X95L, for high end OLED go with A95L, for mid range OLED go with LG C3 or S90C
1:42 why so does the qn95c and Hisense look so blurry? No way they look like this in the store..
Will you be doing a x95L settings/calibration video
Good balanced and thorough review,! Thanks Vincent
I've noticed this with Apple's XDR displays. Not the most zones, but quite good algorithm to handle blooming. Though, I do with that number of zones was a good measure because it's very difficult (without great reviews like Vincent's) to know what mini LED performance will be like across brands and models.
Didnt even notice, but I remember the time you had 30k subs 😉and now 500k? GZ!
This video just reaffirms what I've suspected to be the case this year with the X95L compared with other mini-Led brands. I've always believed the dimming zone count and even the contrast ratios is a bit of spec marketing ploy to sway prospective buyers from one brand to other. The secret sauce does seem to be the processing which no matter the reviewer all agree, SONY is the leader with its processing.
dimming zones matter more than processing. If the image is good to start off with, why do you need to process it for?

14:40 Why does the lg g3 look so black-crushed?
Due to the very dark scene possible camera adaptation shouldn't be the reason, right?
The real truth is despite lg owners claiming lg has the best shadow detail and no black crush they’re full of shit clearly. Woled suffers from the same black crush as rgb oled. While qd oled is better it still has black crush but the key difference being you can turn on contrast enhancer for the darkest scenes and still have a good picture while there’s nothing you can do with the g3 without lifting the blacks to being completely washed out and looking like a green mess. This is a known issue to anyone but lg owners who are in compete denial and will fight you claiming it’s not black crush you’re seeing 😂

The conclusion people should arise isn’t that less zones is better, or “imagine what they could achieve with more zones”…it’s that there is actually a sweet spot between number of zones, performance and compromise, and that refinement takes a lot of “know how”, development and testing.
@hdtvtest, how does this year's X95L compare against X95K for subtitles and the blooming effect?
Sony’s algorithm tax is worth it!
Yep
Upvoted for the kegel exercise reasons!
But if Sony can do so much with fewer zones, why not ratchet up the zones and do even better? Is adding zones very costly or is there some other issue with adding zones?
cost is likely the main one. If they added zones they'd either have to make the tv alot more expensive or cut into their profit margin.
@@dubsynczz why is adding zones costly? isn't it just a function of processing power? they have one of the best chips in the business
@jc2126: What @dubsynczz said is correct. More dimming zones require more LEDs + more advanced controller, which drives up the cost. It just doesn't make business sense, when Sony (or any other company) can just buy OLED panels with pixel-level light control at a cheaper price...

Samsung qn900B 8k = most blooming and unbearable rainbow effect on screen, couldn't tolerate that so I returned.
then the Sony X95L= I've tried my best to get that tv to bloom but was impossible, oled picture quality but without that depth (3d effect) the reason for the return was the motion Blur on fast action scenes, tried for 2 weeks with all the settings and motion control but no success.
now currently I have the Hisense UXK 65inch with about 1500 dimming zones: I can confirm that it has less blooming than the qn900b but is nowhere near the x95l regarding the perfect blooming control, but the motion blur is better than the sony.

with the c8, c9 and cx u have from day one image retention on bright images and in my personal experience with the c9 after 2 years the pixel started to degrade, soon after the colours were not even half of what used to be and eventually got burn in after 2 1/2 years of daily normal use.
