I dabbled in oil and watercolors many years ago. Work/life left no time for painting - but then COVID afforded lots of time to start over. After two years of just watercolors, I no longer think of myself as a beginner. However, at 76, I am still a student - I continue to learn with the help of the many wonderful artists on RUclips. Kristy, you have been my inspiration- you taught me not to be so structured - to relax and become a free spirit! I will never be an “accomplished” artist but I’ve found a new love and a motivation to get up - and PAINT! Thank you!
You are welcome!!
I love to see people in their 70s still learning and growing 💗 I've heard far too many people say "I'm too old to start" and that always breaks my heart. I wanna be like you when I grow up! 😉
"Ex-beginner"!!! Love that! The vast majority of artists we know are too humble to boast, but really deserve to acknowledge their hard-won skills, and this term seems just right to us. There is a core set of essential skills in the craft of painting that every artist needs to learn, and after you can replicate good results every time, then you can really start putting it all together and develop individual style. Kristy Rice continues to weed out the jargon and communicate the fundamentals of art-making in ways that people can understand and learn!
Wow I’m so grateful for your comment!!
A comment from Blick Art Supplies?!?! You have arrived, lady!
@@KristyRice I’m a new viewer- when you say opaque colors, is that the same as gouache?
Not quite but close!
Patty-Frankly, I like them all.
You had me at , “Im a creative weirdo who likes to talk a lot”. 😂😂😂❤❤❤
I’ve been painting with acrylics for about 20 years. I’m self taught, and that has really messed with my creativity, because I have this “keep it between the lines” mentality that I have struggled with. I had it in my head that watercolor is supposed to be light pastels. Seeing all of that gorgeous bright color you are using is a real 💡 and now I am so excited to keep learning and just having fun with it!
OOoooh well if that isn't the mother of all watercolor aha moments!!!!
Not only do I love your style...I love your happiness and excitement for what you do. ❤
Thank you so much!!
Ok, I feel the need to stop and make this comment to you thank you thank you thank you thank you this video has helped me so much… I have been painting with watercolor for aprox 2 years , watched endless videos, bought endless supplies and was left so I encouraged by it all… until I found this video.. once I painted along and better understood the methods and began to use them, wow!, it’s as if it broke through some invisible barrier in my mind or something , allowing creative juice to flow and flow freely.. it’s been a game changer for me and I’d like to say thank you for your teaching style and just your way all together , I’m truly thankful for you.
May you be blessed always..
Brooke from ALASKA🙂
Thank you so much Brooke! This is exactly what I hoped this video would be for lost… a way to break through to that next level. Appreciate you!!
I’m with you Booke, have been doing the exact same thing. Can’t wait to see more videos and LEARN!
I watch you paint during my first cup of coffee and it feels so zen. My watercolors are looking too much like my acrylic painting. I know more practice will break some habits. I'll repurpose a small sketchpad to keep my samples together. The lifting technique is totally my favorite. I'm fully stocked with paint and LOVING your pallet.
More water more water! And thanks for all your support!!
I love the lifting! Looks like a peacock feather! 😍
I sure can see how using better watercolor paper makes such a difference. No pilling plus I love the way the watercolor flows with each technique you do. I’m such a beginner but I see how quality eliminates so much frustration
I absolutely love the positive lifting. I'm still discovering MY style. This is one of my favorite techniques for texture!
I would say there is a category between beginner and intermediate. That is where I am. What would we call it? Maybe begintermediate? Or maybe interginner? Or maybe just progressing. ❤️this video.
Ex-beginner 😘
“Ex” seems like such a negative…at least in most our situations, ha!
I'm a beginner, I can't stop watching your tutorials, ur amazing 🎉
Yay! Thank you!
I thought you hit the nail on the head at the beginning (I'm only a minute or so in). 'When you can predict, and execute with a finished product that meets your expectations (or ideal).'
I enjoyed all of these techniques, but I'm really excited to play around with my liner brushes. Love the lifting too. A sketchbook entry or two is definitely in order!
Yesss!!
Thank you Kristy! Every video seems to be either beginner, or master…you are the first person I have seen address the middle experienced painter
Yay!! That was my goal!!
Its the positive lifting AND the watercolor sketching for me.
Yay!
Has anyone ever told you that you give off major Penelope vibes from Criminal Minds? You have such a wonderful, joyful, fun, embracing personality and I am always reminded of Penelope whenever I watch your videos!
I haven’t heard that but now I’m curious!!
@@KristyRice You’ve got to check her out! She’s like the best character on that show!
I actually loved your first answer. Spot on
The lifting blew my mind. Thank you! Looking forward to playing with it.
Enjoy!
Thank you, Kristy! I've been practicing watercolor for about 3 years and was excited to watch to "test/assess my skills", but sadly I think I'm still a beginner because I still don't seem to have a handle on water control when I follow the techniques with you in the video. I used my art of joy's sake palette and same color choices as you, but I got a lot of blooms and not the same mixing of color as you did when flooding, ombre, and lifting. Going to search your videos because you probably have something about water control that I could really learn from! Thank you for your generosity in sharing your time and skill!
I do have a vid about water control! ruclips.net/video/ZiK5UIMnQ0Y/видео.html
I have been doing it about 3 years too. You did notice that she said "30" years! Guess we should cut ourselves some slack.
@Jessica Bee Thank you! I wondered about that. I have some 100% cotton paper, but I don't really use it, especially for practice drills, because I am waiting for a sign that my skills are good enough for the better paper - and I know I have been told not to wait, but I still can't help it! I am getting some for Christmas, so maybe that will be the motivation I need to use it.
@Watercolor Painting in the Afternoon it's true!! Thank you for the reminder! ❤️
Adore the positive lifting. Will try this. Thanks
Thank you for answering my question from our one on one so we'll Kristy. It all makes sense. Love these activities to help extend my confidence and adventure through Watercolor land with so much joy inspired by you of course❤️❤️❤️
I was hoping you’d see this!!!
Yay. I see why I make brown a lot. I force what I’m trying.
Well knowing or relaxing is way past half the battle!!
This was a terrific video. I have been dabbling at watercolour over the past year, self taught, and now that I am retired, I have more time to paint. Yeah! (But, there is so much content on the internet, and sometimes too much is confusing.
So happy to have found Paintcrush! I followed this tutorial start to finish with better paints and paper, and the results were so much better, and I was excited to show it off- a little self love!
Thanks Kristy.
Wonderful!
Kristy , where are your fun Christmas card ideas.? I saw the gorgeous cards you did 5 years ago….. I’m not there yet. Merry Christmas. Thank you for the watercolor gift you share.
Coming this week!
Thanks for this! My favorite is the positive lifting 😍
Mine too!
Finding this whole video so inspiring! Forget Xmas shopping..Im off to play. Especially at the glazing.
Have fun!
Wow love this techniques. My favorite is the positive technique with the surprise colors that magically appears. 🦋
@3:11 Dude... [oil painter here and] Phthalo Blue is my life. You choose wisely, my friend 😊
I like the watercolor sketching best here because it is quite a new idea to me.
This one is a game changer!
Love the line work on wet! ❤ Oh! Now I know what glazing is! Thank you for a clear explanation! You’re the best! ❤
Happy to help!
Definitely the positive lifting!!! I love seeing the surprise or happy accidents that occured!!!
Yesss!!
Yes!! Love the glazing.
I loved watching you create the painting at the end!
Thank you! Cheers!
The first flood on dry looks like the aurora borealis! But lifting is my favorite!
Me too!!
Thanks for this one! interesting techniques I never would have thought about so consciously. Kristy, you're a good go-to when the painters block strikes!
Oh thank you!
Lots of learning !!!. I love how you explain everything....love your 🎨 art
Thank you!!
Thank you for sharing so much knowledge. I think lifting was my favorite.😊
Love this video ❤ it’s so useful for where I am. I just took out beginner watercolor color classes off of my playlist on streaming service. Part of me is thinking 🤔’who do you think you are?’ Another thought is that, ‘if I have to here an overview of types of paper once more….😂’. Creative weirdness makes the world go around. 🥰
I just did a quick paint for 15 minutes. With your pallet. It is still my favorite go to pallet. And I have a lot of options. They just mix so beautifully together. I would never have picked that florescent yellow but it works.
That means so much! Thanks!!
Love the ocean waves swatch!
Absolutely love the positive lifting. Hopefully I will be an ex beginner soon. So far ive done two paintings but am gonna go do all your charts
Oh yes please do!!
Ex-beginner! That’s me, I really appreciate learning all these new techniques.
Wahooo!!
Your paints look incredible! My next purchase!
Just getting back to my watercolors and need to get a liner brush, how beautiful 😍
You should!m
Positive lifting AND watercolor sketching! But all are great!
Ngl, a more controlled, realistic style of composition and painting is more my jam, but you have so much useful technique and information on your channel - and I love your energy! I set aside a small, two-hue peony painting to follow this chart creation and tutorial. Two hours and four jars of paint water later - I'm so glad I did!! This was fun, informative and inspiring! And, as I'm sure you would know, taking a break from a project allows for fresh eyes upon return!
Love your palette, btw! Such a great collection of shades; it fills a gap, which I think was your intention. Anyway, thanks!!
Wonderful to hear!! My personal style is much more co trolled and realistic-ish but this technique approach applies across styles :)
I like abstract effects, so I want to practice the sketching on wet where you showed the blue waves. The contrast detailing and positive lifting also looks like fun!
I loved positive lifting. Thank you so much. Will practice all of it.
You're so welcome!
Thank you for a journey into the world of watercolours, loved it! You make it so simple, keeps me fixed to the screen...waiting for more
Thank you so much 😀
I’ve been hearing the word ombré a lot. Had to look it up. This old dog just learned a new trick. Woof
Wahooooo!
I'm totally excited, now that I'm over being sick. So glad to be back with you! I still have to binge watch all your lives, that I missed!!!
Fun fun fun! I sent one of your videos to a friend and now we are getting together and painting with you!
You are such an excellent teacher! This is perfect. Thank you!
You’re welcome!!
Already booked an scrubbing is awesome for large spaces
Your instruction on the Types of brush work is amazing. I love the watercolor sketching, I want to be competent as Xwatercolor painter! This video will be one of my favotites!Thank you and I love playing for learner! Karen Dirmish
You’re welcome!!
I just love you, you're a breath of fresh air. Always so happy!! Lucky girl.
Oh friend. This channel ai my outlet. Not always happen but ALWAYS chasing joy 😘😘
11/23: OMG!!! So glad I found you. Thanks for the curiosity and experimentation. I’ve been stuck for ages. Now I’m motivated again🤯🤯🤯
You got this!
This is JUST what I needed! You came up in my feed this morning, although Jenna Rainey brought you up in her “best 2023” watercolor videos yesterday. I’ve been working away at watercolors for at about a year now, and I’m often fighting myself. I know I want more than “beginner” videos, but I keep going back to them because they’re comfortable. But, I’m also bored. I’ve tried experimenting more, and I’ve done a few things I’ve liked, but I’m feeling lost. So, thank you-I needed a little push!
So glad you’re here!!
Contrast detailing!!!!!! I love it. ❤
You mentioned two brush collections. I have the first - excited to find out when we all can purchase the second. Noticed it is coming out in 2023! ❤ thanks!
Yes it is!!
The positive lift for me.
That one seems to be the r espy ding favorite!!
Positive lifting is beautiful
Absolutely!!
The more I try and practice the better I get. If I get lazy I’ll normally just slow in my creative process it’s best if it is something I love and I love everything I enjoy outside best and flowers trees and things a wooden fence or something like a pond with Lilly pads and cypress trees or a blue heron sneaking around the edge of my huge pond for his dinner. I absolutely find myself stimulated by my surroundings and I am ready and I don’t believe we ever finish learning about any art we practice.
Amen!!
This was very good and gave some great examples and I love all of them. The lifting is really cool. I think just the practice of each of these to see what "feels" best will determine your style I think. So great!! Love everything you do always.
Absolutely! Thanks for watching!!
Love, love, love this video Kristy. I wish I had discovered you 20 years ago. Since that's spilled milk, I am soaking up all of your information and inspiration. I have a shortcut to your chanel so I don't have to look at anything else to get here. 💜
That lifting is amazing! I love it and can’t wait to practice it!
It's so good! Have a blast! XO
Flooding on dry was really different…I like that!
Really all techs are helpful. One would eventually use all techs to a good painting.
Yes!!
Love your videos, so insightful even for a trained acrylic/oil painter here (not so good at watercolors…yet!) ❤
So glad it’s helpful!!
It feels like all the art tutorial content on RUclips is aimed at beginners, so this was extremely refreshing!! I want to try the watercolor sketching, as sketching is my favorite thing to do right now!
Thank you for your time, Your knowledge, your art. Wonderful video. The music is nice. I enjoyed the positive lifting. Thanks again
Thank you!!!
Thank you so very much for this exercise! It’s really good to go back to playing with these techniques and having fun with the visual orchestra of watercolours 🥰❤️
Visual orchestra!! Love it!!
Still loving the florescent yellow. Eye candy❤️🍬. Makes my eyes feel awake lol. I don't know sounds silly I love colors❤️❤️
It does NOT sound silly!!
Positive lifting is my favorite too! Plus the wet on dry with the liner brush.
Yay!
Positive lifting is my favorite and am excited to experiment with it! Thank you
I love the liner ,use as a pencil idea.
Loved this! Saved it, as I’m very, very new beginner. I’m choosing it as permission to play, and learn from what happens
Have fun!
Lifting and Wet on Wet are my favourites as they are both so unpredictable!!!!💕💕💕💕😘
Yes yes!!
I have to say as a new old artist who's rediscovering the joy of water colors. That your technique video has sparked some new ideas and inspired me.
I’m so glad to hear that!!!
@@KristyRice Thank You.😄
I've been painting for 50 years off and on. I think it's safe to say that I've moved out of the beginner phase. With that said, there is always room to grow and learn.
Indeed!!
This is one tutorial I will follow bit by bit when I have more time. Lots to take in.
So much!! It’s def not designed to absorbed in one sitting!! XO
Loving this! It makes so much sense to me. I'm just getting back into watercolor from beginner! Thanks so much!
Love your pallet colors! But as (possibly) an advanced beginner I find I could use some help with how to mix your colors to get new colors. I have experimented mixing various colors and frankly failed miserably. Am hoping you might consider doing a video on good color combinations from your Art for Joy’s Sake palette. 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻
I already have that video!! ruclips.net/video/dseZqGOo0_A/видео.html
@@KristyRice oh shoot! I remember that! So sorry!
Eeeeee you are totally my painting crush!
Aww thanks!
Positive lifting for me too!! Great video!
This video is useful to me because I am no longer an absolute beginner but have much to learn. I think instead of a chart to hang up I will put these into one of my watercolor journals that I use for new techniques. I am glad to have found your videos. They are new to me. My daughter gave me an Echo Show that I keep on my art table and play watercolor videos on it. It is making all the You Tube videos so much more readily available to me.
Glad it was helpful! And what an awesome daughter! Glad you're here!
Your joy and passion for watercolours is so inspirational. I will watch a video before I start to paint 🎨 puts me in a positive mood. Thank you. 🐞
This is a fantabulous video, chocked full of so much helpful information! I need to practice each one of these techniques, and I think it will help me understand so much more about watercoloring! Everything you paint is incredible!! 😍🖌️🎨
Wow thank you so so much!!
I am still very much a beginner, but I am really excited by these techniques. I can't wait to try some the stuff you did with a liner.
Wonderful!
positive liftback is my fave.
Yay!!
Love how you keep coming up with new techniques over and over! Thank you for the joy!!
Thanks so much 😊
I would love to see this piece of artwork finished. Most interesting and informative
Glad you enjoyed it
You my dear are AWESOME! Thank You!!!!
Aww thanks!!
I love the glazing
I've been looking at the effects of your techniques and realized that I've been pushing and pulling and didn't know that there is an actual name for what I'm doing. Wow what a wonderful effect it makes especially using different types of paints. I've been using the new art nouveau by kuratake. So very excited about what this technique produces. What a wonderful way to warm up also. Always impressed by what you share with us and very thankful.
The positive lifting is all peacock to me.
Peacocks are a blast to paint!
Love positive lifting!!! This much the same as I draw. Pencil in one hand eraser in the other 😉
Love that!
Excellent Kristy! I am definitely in this category, but was hesitant to call myself an intermediate. I think it is a lot like my hubby’s golf. One day he shoots a great game and the next time out, he cannot find the green! Lol
So far I love the lifting
Wow! I'm going to try all these ideas.
