Oh my gosh, this is fun! Type A person here who has her pantry alphabetized and fronted like store shelves. I’m still cringing inside, but I’m pushing myself forward. What an amazing teacher you are - “unexpected opportunities” sounds so much more encouraging than “mistakes” does. I’m so thankful you have years of saved videos because I’m bingeing like an obsessed woman here!!! Thank you, dear! “Old dogs” can learn new things! You’re keeping my retired mind supple and bringing me joy!
Where have you been my whole life ? Finally a wonderful quirky person (and I can say that’s as I am quirky and random as well) who gives us the opportunity to choose . The paint color, the brush , the paper . Love it !!! Be silly ,be crazy ,be funny ,and you will enjoy your art experience so much more !!!! I have really enjoyed watching your videos ! Thanks girlfriend ! ( my kids would say “ really Mom? “) but I love that saying
I love doing watercolor and ink but the pencil definitely gives a softer look and colors can blend into graphite more- thanks! I'll have to go back to this technique and play with it more.
oooooooooooo I may regret this, but that's okay. Lessons to learn. I am going to try this with some water-soluble graphite and (this is the crazy one) Graphitint.
First time I've seen this technique Kristy and I've been searching RUclips for new ideas for years. Thanks for your bright spirits and genius ideas. I always feel better when I watch your tutorials. They just brighten my day. I feel like you say what my brain thinks. 😂
I finally got to try this technique, real life / desk breaking lol yeah… I love sketching though so these exercises were a blast for me! And o-m-g your water colors and brushes were literally a freaking joy to use! Tytytyty💜💜💜💜💜💜when I’m able to I’m going to try and create something using the pencil technique. Btw I found my 6b worked the best, I thought I’d prefer the 12 b I have because it’s the softest I own but nope, 6b was amazing. Anyway tyty again so much for the lessons, you’re a joy to learn from!
Thank you for being you! You’re so fun to watch! I look forward to trying this and wonder how it would work with watercolor pencils too🤔…guess I’ll have to try it and find out!
OMG yes ...I was thinking the same thing with the watercolor pencils. They are just super pigmented when u add them onto wet paper. Def going to try it out tho
Yesss! Try it with the watercolor pencils!!! It will be so good! Come back and let me know how you like it!! It’s honestly the only way I use watercolor pencils, soooo fun!
@@KristyRice for sure! Would def like to see. I tried it last night but just on mixed media paper (what I use when I'm just practicing on the couch. Still counts as time when the hubby....right? Lol) so I don't think my result was accurate. I'll have to try again on better paper.
Can’t wait to paint along with this video. My brushes have arrived! I have Strathmore 300 & 400 series that I hope will work well for play. Thanks so much! Love how you teach and ready to have some fun..
I loved this video. I also finally got a concept which I have struggled a bit with in the rounded leaf when you flooded the area with water and moved the paint and reshaped. I will definitely be practising these leaves. Thanks so much
Hello Kristy! This was such a great video and interesting practice. Cannot wait to try it! Thank you for sharing....I find your teaching style very encouraging and welcoming.❤❤
I love love love this tutorial. I have watercolors brand new that I bought a month ago that are still brand new because I’m just a little bit scared. I also have acrylic paints that are just sitting there also. I could do this for practice and I’m sure it would give me some confidence. Thank you for a wonderful lesson
This is mesmerizing! I do have only round and filbert brushes. I’m having trouble with the shapes, mainly maybe because I’m brand new to watercolor and any art for that matter.I just love this cool technique. Thanks for really explaining the detail work and not teaching by the rules and regs! ❤️❤️❤️
so much fun Kristy!!!!!!!! I am a beginner ( I know...still!!) your free and happy spirit is contagious! I love the very first turquoise you laid down...does it have a # or name?
Awesomeness!!!! Great fun technique and I love your coaching and encouragement. To hear someone say (not txt) to you..." you're OK, you can do this, it doesn't matter, have fun brings tears to my eyes. My mom was my encourager but does that from heaven now. You are changing lives Miss Kristy.
I can’t wait to try this! I’m in the car right now so I can’t at the moment. (Don’t have a cow, I’m a passenger, not the driver!) But I will be saving this one to try at home for sure. Thanks for all the fun videos and great ideas.
Oh She is my twin. I am free spirit, an old one but whatever! I love your ideas , they all fit so comfortably. But how do understand a soft lead on pencil??! Is it the color or is it the deepness ??
OMG! I was very happy with a sketch of a bougainvillea branch that I did - and completely unhappy with how painting it has turned out. So - I tried practicing your technique using the shape of the third leaf and a mechanical pencil (and also the nib of a fine point gray marker - I never liked the color) and I am SO ECSTATIC! I have only painted two bracts so far and I CAN'T wait to keep going! Thank you!
Love your energy and your techniques. ❤️ Thank you for sharing it with us all. 😍 Love your pallet, especially your pastels and neon colors. Can we know which brands and colors they are?
Now I have your brushes, I'm looking forward to use them. Thanks for these ideas. Especially the leaves drawn with a pencil through the paint. Gives me the idea I can draw (which I can't hehe).
Since you said you would answer if someone asked about specific colors, would you please tell me the names of the five colors on the bottom row starting from the left side, of your CFM paints tin? Thank you so much! The forth and fifth colors are the ones I really want to get😍
Thank you so much!! They look like browns, pinks and oranges. You swatched the whole row on Tik Tok and shared it to Instagram a couple of months ago 🙂
I'm so glad I ran across this video. I am so much more comfortable using pencil because I feel like I have more control than with paintbrushes, but I'm still learning with watercolor. I never would have thought to try this technique.
This is so fun! I’m binge watching your videos & have learned more from you than anyone else on watercolor RUclips! Now I’m off to try these techniques 😀.. Thanks Kristy!
Love your brushes....except for the large pink flat brush. The paint *pink* has split all the way up the length of the handle and is peeling after only a few months use. I did not leave it in water, nor wash in any kind of chemicals. Thanks for all the tips, basics, JOY in learning watercolor techniques and art.
I’m sorry to hear this happened to your brush. I’m happy to replace it at no cost and cover shipping. Please email hello@kristyrice.com with your mailing address :)
I love your way of teaching.I always get so much inspiration. I do a lot of graphite drawing and just starting with watercolours but I’ve always used the “H” pencils for light drawing application and “B” pencils for heavier darker shading and this is consistent with the drawing courses I’ve done.
Yes absolutely that is a solid, classic approach. I just find I’m prone to making indents in my paper with the h pencils as the lead is so much harder :)
i tried this technique with watercolour pencils, it was so satisfying and brought me into the flow state instantly. made a very crazy painting of a jellyfish made of grapes and vines, so random and fun. Sending lots of hearts to you.
Great video Kristy! Had to stop half way through to do some leaf rubbings with my 6 year old as your video reminded him of some leaves he made last year in kindergarten. First time he talked to me about it so of course I dropped everything, went out to the garden to select some leaves, we peeled some crayons and did some leaf rubbings. So fun. Then we watched the rest of your video. Love your fun spirit. I’ll have to try this sometime! My kids would like it too.

What do you recommend when you are painting with poor quality watercolor paper?
More water than you think you need and a really light tough from brush to paper :)
No apologies necessary

Can you elaborate? Like QoR?
I love the fact that you don't give exact colors. It always seems to keep me from trying a painting unless I have exactly what is being used ☺️.
