    • @MilkT0ast
      @MilkT0ast 3 месяца назад +3

      Slight nitpick here:
      Watches are typically designed to be worn on the left hand. While wallets (back then) are typically kept in the right back pocket.
      But the sign of the cross is supposed to be up, down ,left, right.

    • @jameyhej3
      @jameyhej3 3 месяца назад +5

      @@MilkT0ast I'll nitpick the nitpick. The watch they are referring to (which would have been the fashion at the time of the phrase being coined) would be a pocket watch, which would be in the front right vest pocket. And your wallet would be in the left breast pocket. It wouldn't be until much later that vests would fall out of fashion. Trousers (what we generally call pants today) and carrying your wallet in the back right pocket instead of the left breast pocket came later. And of course wristwatches took over from pocket watches and are traditionally worn on the left wrist instead of the right vest pocket. So modern men would follow the pattern spectacles, testicles, watch, wallet, but if you go back maybe a century (not sure on the dates, and the changes happened earlier in the US vs Britain) the phrase as used in the movie would be correct.

    So many shows and film series casually write out the second lead character, often the female lead, and the hero just gets a new replacement, with little-to-sometimes-no explanation whatsoever other than it's a new love interest of the sequel, that I think it's amazing this film lampshaded that with Vanessa just suddenly being a fembot. And that Elizabeth Hurley clearly came back and still shot these scenes for it is amazing.
    (Also, Rebecca Romijn was the first Mystique, before JLaw.)

    Fate played a cruel trick on me when I saw this in the theater.
    I had moved home after my first love broke it off. I had moved several states so we could be together after her family moved away. I had to delay the move three months and in that time, her love for me dimmed. By the time I got there, the love I once felt was cold and diminished.
    I moved back to my state two years later. I was still nursing a broken heart. It was a real gut punch when I lost her, young love is not ready for dark hallways.
    I was pretty comfortable around this time. Went and saw this movie to have a laugh. My ex is in two very prominent scenes. I had not expected that. There she was, larger than life and on the big screen. My heart nearly fell apart again.
    A decade or so later, we were both in amazing relationships. She contacted me on social media. I had lunch with her in LA. Her scene was filmed over two days. No speaking part, but she was a very prominent dancer in the movie.
    Had my closure and I wish her well. But holy moley, seeing her on the big screen was a real shocker.

    I might be in the minority here, but I really didn't like Heather Graham in this movie. I didn't find her funny at all. Sure, she's attractive, but she was DROWNING under Mike Meyer's comedic energy, let alone treading water. No doubt that he is STRONG with the Farce, but she lagged so much behind. Just saying her lines to keep up without bringing much to her roll.
    Meh, whatever... the movie is still ridiculously over-the-top FUN! I truly cannot WAIT for you to get into "Goldmember"!

    James, if you think a game of chess can't be foreplay, you need to watch The Thomas Crown Affair, the original one, from 1968 with Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway.
    You will find that great acting and directing can give you the sexiest game of chess, without even the need to show any skin. That's talent. No offense to Pierce Brosnan and Renée Russo for the 1999 remake 😉.

    Yo @jamesVSCinema, you really need to check out Bowfinger if you haven't seen it. Steve Martin and Eddie Murphy in a film about making a film with an uncooperative lead. Stupidly funny. Also, not sure how you feel about Woody Allen but 'What's Up Tiger Lily?' is an underappreciated gem. I don't want to say much more about the latter, but lets just say he reimagines an older Japanese Kung-fu movie, without shooting any new footage - it's insanely good and crazy funny.

As a film guy, it would be in your wheel house (if listening to two white dudes and guest talk about directors is also in your wheel house). Started out as a very funny 10 episode podcast about The Phantom Menace, and became one of the best movie podcasts where they do miniseries based on a directors filmography, specifically directors who got a blank check to do whatever they want because of early successes.
    Anyways, they did commentary episodes on Patreon for the Austin Powers movies which was fun... but they ended by doing Love Guru which is less fun (but funny as a commentary to do, since they've never seen it before hand).

  • @TheMule71
    @TheMule71 3 месяца назад

    To answer your question at the end, that would be me, with a caveat. I don't place all those movies in the same category. There's little disgusting humor in say Frankenstein Jr. or Airplane! and generally speaking all the jokes are good. I think Austin Powers movies have their moments, but less than 50% of the movie makes me laugh and less than 20% is good in my book.
    Also a lot of the comedy is crass teenager jokes, and I'm way past that, so the joke has to be really good for me to enjoy it. Mel Brooks doesn't shy away from low jokes too but there are some many others that are kinda smart. And Airplane! and Top Secret are yet a different type of comedy often making fun of the media itself and / or how movies are made (kinda of inside jokes).
    And even among Mike Myers movies, Wayne's World is a completely different style, even if it's kinda the same comedy but I find it has way more taste, and an elegance of sort.

    I recall the time the first Austin Powers came out. I watched it in the theatre with some other buddies and we all laughed our collective butts off together. I tried to get her to go. She wouldn’t. Eventually it came out on VHS, I rented it for her to see. The day I brought it home, her sister was visiting. I put it on and all they could do was ridicule, be derisive, and mock the movie and my sense of humour. Thirty minutes into the movie I stood up and turned the movie off.
    They both exclaimed, “What are you doing? We were watching that!”
    I replied, “The watch it on your own time and your own dime”
    I walked out and took it back to the video store.
    They had no sense of haha at all! A total waste of my time.

    I really wish they carried on the this franchise past a trilogy. They could have done it the same way as the Bond franchise. Mike Myers does his run of 3 films, then rest the franchise, after a while have a different comedian put their spin on the character. Each actor that has played James Bond has brought something different to the table, maybe it could have worked for Austin Powers too.
