All DeSantis is really doing is having the state of Florida require employers to prove they properly checked the tax ID numbers of hired employees. In NYS this law would never have effected the kind of construction companies that build large projects. Only small outfits hire the non documented, and they don’t even really hire them technically. They hire them on as independent contractors.
But Employers never do get fined and instead the focus has been to blame these "undocumented" workers" instead of the people who Employ them. They demonize them because they are brown and don't speak English.

The problem is everyone loves to cut corners and rather come here illegally when in fact they can come here legally under H-2A visa. On the other hand, business owners who I called predators and pretends they care so much about these workers (boo hoo!) But the truth is they purposely choose not to recruit under the visa program like ‘they’re supposed to’ so they can take advantage of these vulnerable workers for low pay. Hence, it’s a ripple effect, and the government - both state and federal, needs to really crack down on these businesses and make them accountable.
Do you know anyone who has tried? I have a friend in Mexico who works in the USA occasionally for architecture design firms. It takes months to get the forms, phone calls and interviews, and the potential employer, the sponsor must do a lot of effort, forms, etc. that all takes valuable time. It is a freaking mess! You can’t get one to enter the country without contacts and a JOB before you apply. Once here, there are more check-ins and time away from work. If I were an employer I wouldn’t even bother. 😊

What this fails to do is get the IRS and INS to do their own footwork. I can't tell you how many guys I know who have overstayed their visa or are working with invalid papers.
