in 2009, way before metoo, when kate winslet won her oscar. she thanked everyone from the key grip to the wardrobe. the one person she didnt mention was Harvey weinstein. some thought she forgot, others thought she was ungrateful. in hindsight it was obvious what she was doing by leaving him out of her acceptance speech.

I always thought of Swift as just pop drivel (still do) but ever since that moment I have much more respect for her than that nutbag Kanye. Talk about a god complex, Kanye thinks he's above god.
@Heathcoatman You're a brave person for saying so my friend. Personally I can't stand the woman; her "posse" of impossibly good looking friends who can only say positive things about her, travelling not just by private jet but owning two Dassault Falcon aircraft and her net worth of over 11 billion dollars sickens me. If she invests wisely at 7.5% thats over 82 million a year. For that her 1 million$ donation in 2016 to Louisiana flood relief, $10,000 to for a service dog for a boy with autism, $1,300 toward purchasing haircare and skincare products for people of color and $1 million to Tennessee tornado relief are mere pocket change. Her goal in life seems to be date someone, break up with a broken heart, then sick her "Swifties" on them. She's a narcissist in the truest sense. All either of us need now is to get doxxed by her irrational fans. I'll stick with Jackson Browne and Neil Young. The truth always hurts.
She called him God from “the Old Testament”. She was having a dig at him. She was mocking him. The Old Testament God is vengeful and pretty much an awful figure just like Weinstein.
Letterman making fun of Uma Thurman’s name and repeatedly attempting to get the whole crowd to join in (and failing because there was one person there who found it funny) belongs in this list!!
@@mrs.creature3443 Yeah, I used to look up to him, and Listened to his motivational speeches. No more, can’t watch anything he is in anymore. No respect for the guy at all.
Yes, he should totally let someone mock his wife for her hair loss! Also throw stuff at her and insult her! You don't make fun of someone's physical issues. That's never funny. There are limits. Make fun of her dress, or shoes, or makeup even, but not something she has no control over. If someone mocks my husband, they'll be lucky if they just get a drink to the face, and I don't approve of physical violence as a rule. But I'll defend my loved ones, and won't apologize for it. Esecially if someone insults them in front of millions of people. Funny how I've also seen idiotic comments about how Smith should have punched Chris Rock because a slap is "too feminine." But "It's just a joke" is just a watered down version of "It's just a prank, Brah!"
She said in her memoir that she ran into her ex Justin Timberlake backstage and he completely threw her off her focus. She was really nervous and intimidated after.
I wasn't a Britney fan, but them calling her fat (I think itvwas this performance) really pissed me off. For just having a child she was in relatively great shape, we have a nation of young mostly young girls and some young boys who are struggling with body image, and we make fun of someone who wasn't even chubby? No wonder we have kids dying from anorexia and bulimia. It is absolutely pathetic to body shame her
I cannot agree with your number one more. You nailed this list. Yeah Harvey Weinsten being mentioned at award shows has not aged very well and it makes my skin crawl after all the horrific crimes that he committed and tried to use his money and power to buy his way out of it. No matter how famous you are, there is no trying to manipulate the system to not live up to the consequences of your actions, and Weinstein has to live with the consequeces for the rest of his natural life as do the women that he assaulted who have to live with life altering trauma.
Dishonorable mentions: 1. Ol' Dirty Bastard disrupts Shawn Colvin's award acceptance speech (40th Annual Grammy Awards) 2. Bob Dylan Soy Bomb incident (40th Annual Grammy Awards) 3. Miley Cyrus and Robin Thicke (2013 MTV Video Music Awards)
The oddest thing about the SLAP, was Will was laughing at it. Then he saw Jada give him “the LOOK”. The look that every woman gives her husband when she needs him is stand up for her and to defend her. It’s usually a quick flicker and no one else will see it. But husband’s are trained to look for it. I’ve been with my husband for 39 years, 40 years in 5 months. And I have given my husband that look maybe 2 or 3 times total. I give it when I’ve tried my best to handle it on my own. And if he sees it, he knows I’ve had it and I need him to stop it for me. Jada gave him the FULL FIGHT FOR ME NOW!!!!
@ Right!!! then having the audacity to call it an entanglement. Instead of what it actually was. Her two timing on her husband. Seeing this kid who was barely considered legal age. And giving the husband the defend me look. I would have been tempted to hold out my hand asking Jada to give him his balls back. Or have your boy toy defend you and your honor I sure as hell can’t.
Dumber than a box of rocks! If You said what Chris Rock said about My Wife, I’d got full Mike Tyson on Him, I would’ve hit Him not slap Him. There’s No Room for Disrespect on the Live Show!
Another moment worth mentioning was The Streaker during The Oscars ceremony. Maybe more funny than bad, but still a moment known for its notorious reputation.
Britney did want to do the VMAs but because of the conservatorship she had to if she wanted to avoid being punished and if she wanted to see her sons. Due to the backlash she likely got punished anyway for not doing better. That performance was a woman being trafficked; **made** to perform!
You know such a moment is so controversial that it possibly made the Academy reevaluate the way they’ve treated animation over the past ceremonies and present it as the first category in the following 95th Academy Awards ceremony and have the Rock say how it’s a cinematic artform used for “artfully telling sophisticated narratives”, and given how 2 non-Disney/Pixar animated films have won the award, here’s hoping that change will stick with the Oscars if The Wild Robot wins Best Animated Feature this year.
I dated a girl who worked on Broadway in NYC and ended up with a bunch of celebrity personal training clients as well as getting to meet some film stars 🎬 I can't even begin to tell you just how "wonderful" Harvey Weinstein was in their eyes 🤩 As soon as the scandal broke, every single one of them changed their tune to suit the public narrative and avoid any association with him 😂
I definitely know one that you guys forgot. I believe this is when Chris Rock hosted the Oscars for the second time and Stacy Dash came out. Yeah, we still don't understand what was going on there...lol
Hard Rock and Heavy Metal being acknowledged at the Faux-wards, The American Music Awards, came with some interesting moments when winners Guns 'n Roses were announced, a very inebriated Slash and Duff McKagan came to the podium and dropped a couple of F Bombs during their acceptance speech.
Richard Gere threw shade at Harvey Weinstein. He was being sarcastic (in a nice way). He read from a script.. so his praise wasn’t from the heart or genuine and he was super duper nice. Even Weinstein had to laugh because he knew it wasn’t true 😂
Okay, you talk all about the infamous "Snow White" opening for the 1989 Academy Awards, but you NEVER show it? Why?? Have you never heard of "SHOW, DON'T TELL"??
Plus how often do we absolutely despise our bosses, chairperson's, directors etc. but due to their influence we need to put on a show and smile anyway?
That's what I'm thinking. I doubt everyone knew about what Weinstein got up to behind the scenes. I know all Peter Jackson said was - when making 'The Lord of the Rings' - that Weinstein was mostly a terrible and toxic boss who threatened to fire him and blacklist so many crew members.
No, the worst was john wayne attempting to assault Sacheen Littlefeather At the oscars in 1973. And not in the same category as that, but the way the academy disrespected beauty & the beast after it was nominated for best picture, and how they have strategically harmed the animation industry's reputation and helped stifle their growth for decades, is also worth noting.
To be fair, when one of your nominees is The Silence of the Lambs in the Best Picture category, it’s hard to not pick such an iconic horror film over an iconic animated film. Even if I had more respect for animation than the Oscars during that time, I’d probably find myself voting for Silence of the Lambs over Beauty and the Beast. Besides it could’ve worse. At least it didn’t lose Best Picture to another nominee like The Prince of Tides.
I agree. His performance in that film was great, he's a great performer overall. We shouldn't let these incidents outside of films sets affect how we assess their work.
And here I was going to say having the recipient not even show up at the event at all would probably be an option. Looking at you Eminem. He seriously thought Lose Yourself had no chance in hell of winning so didn't even bother to attend the event
@coletrainhetrick No, he knew full well it was for song. As they also asked him to perform the piece because they always preform the songs that got nominated for the category and Lose Yourself was the first time to not have that happen. So ether He really misheard that Or didn't realize that even if he thought it was for best actor his song was also nominated for something.
@mageius these are his words. This is actually what reinforces the reason he didn't go, he thought they gave him an acting nomination he clearly couldn't win just to have him give a free mini concert
I gotta be honest, I’m starting to think that slap was actually a lot of fun to watch. True, Will Smith is a gullible asshead for doing it, but all the memes, references, and fact that it didn’t stop Chris Rock or the rest of the show to continue was what makes is enjoyable to look back at
A couple of these fall into a different category than the rest. They are the ones where people were praised for everything they had done. At the time of those award ceremonies they seemed perfectly fine. It's only in retrospect we realise how bad they were. Perhaps there can be a WatchMojo list of worst award show moments with hindsight.
If Britney gave the audience the "finger" towards the end of the song and gave a political statement about something like performers aren't slaves then walked out, that would have saved the whole performance
Why? She's not a punk rocker or anything remotely close to one, so it would've been completely out of character and just pissed people off and made them question her mental health.
The Will Smith slap should have been #1. If you're going to count people thanking other people who later turned out to be scumbags, then you could make an entire video of just that kind of thing. Anytime that Harvey Weinstein, or Bill Cosby, or O.J. Simpson, or P. Diddy, etc. ever appeared on any kind of awards show, you could now say it was a super cringe moment in hindsight, but there was no way to know that at the time. So it really shouldn't count.
Thanking Harvey Weinstein is easily the worst moment in every award show that has ever happened. That is the one Jew that needs people are regretting ever accepting their success they did it he never did!
I haven't watched any awards show in decades. What ruined it for me? The 1989 Grammys and "Don't Worry, Be Happy'. It's not a song, *at best a little ditty* Second place, *Smiley Virus twerking* at the 2013 MTV awards. I can twerk too, am I a star?
Here's my pick: 2003 Premio Lo Nuestro, where it seemed like a good chunk of the winners were never there. Celia Cruz got some wins but didn't attend as she was very sick, so someone she knew took the awards on her behalf however everyone else not only didn't attend but didn't even bring people to accept their respective awards, leaving the presenters hanging, thus making the 2003 Premio Lo Nuestro was just poorly planned regarding who was gonna show up to claim the trophy, who happen to be the majority.
#10 2016 wasn't a difficult year. Also Moonlight was a terrible movie. And its director went on to Make Mufasa: The lion king. which was also an awful movie. #9 awful terrible man #8 I don't what was worse for Ariana Debose. That horrid rap or the movie WISH that she was in #7 worst opening ever #6 Her body didn't look bad. But everything else about this looked uninteresting and BAD #5 An opening to an awards show that even watch mojo was embarrassed to show the footage #4 NOBODY is a winner here #3 Although he was right that Beyonce should've won that award, West was an asshole for doing this #2 My respect for Will Smith died that night as well as his career. That G.I. Jane joke was funny #1 All the people who thanked Harvey knew of the shady shit he did. They all just turned blind eyes.
It's not good optics that the three worst moments could easily be three Black actors. It's hard enough for Black actors to get there at all without looking bad when they do.

Patrick Stewart and James Corden at Glamour awards
Everyone knew who Roy Rogers was!
Does anyone care about them anymore?
The Slap was 2022 that long ago already G wizz
2009 VMAs
The two worst ones IMO were Kanye and Brittany. Both very cringe-worthy moments.
The slap is still crazy to me 😂😂😂😂
Watchmojo is sure getting some mileage out of the slap 🙄
And how!

“ He fills like he’s a soljuh. “ What does that even mean …?
Heh, Swift has move on to other hits while Kanye moved on to other controversies!
ARIANA DEBOSE ROCKS!!!
#10 2016 wasn't a difficult year. Also Moonlight was a terrible movie. And its director went on to Make Mufasa: The lion king. which was also an awful movie.
#9 awful terrible man
#8 I don't what was worse for Ariana Debose. That horrid rap or the movie WISH that she was in
#7 worst opening ever
#6 Her body didn't look bad. But everything else about this looked uninteresting and BAD
#5 An opening to an awards show that even watch mojo was embarrassed to show the footage
#4 NOBODY is a winner here
#3 Although he was right that Beyonce should've won that award, West was an asshole for doing this
#2 My respect for Will Smith died that night as well as his career. That G.I. Jane joke was funny
#1 All the people who thanked Harvey knew of the shady shit he did. They all just turned blind eyes.
You're beating a dead horse, WatchMojo!
suggest an idea or shut up
Stop it, WatchMojo. It's been almost three years.
it just a list
And Smith continues to be a clown after those 3 years
@@Ova_is_Better_than_Anime really what about bad boys 4
@@jimbo9208 it was good, but Smith as a person, continues to be a clown
Cry
But Gimme More is a banger even though haha
It's not good optics that the three worst moments could easily be three Black actors. It's hard enough for Black actors to get there at all without looking bad when they do.
Will Smith slapping/cursing Chris Rock is #1 for me. It was shocking and horrible. He should have been immediately removed from the building.
🎖🎖🎖🎖
And arrested
Where's ODB??
Ppl hated Britney's performance? I thought she looked smokin hot
