Best drum tech award! Appreciate you & your hard work 🙌
I gotchu bro
Agreed !!!
Love the vids , and your work, I've been gigging with a Dw purple heart kit for the last 3 years and was wondering if you have ever ran into any weirdness with the bass drum lugs? Geeky question but your a dude to ask! Take care man
I'm a truck driver, lol please god stop using those grabby boys and use some ratchet straps or something of the sort to secure that kick and that hardware to the riser. One hard stab of the brakes from the driver, and those grabby boys aint grabbing. not telling you how to do your job lol, but this makes me nervous @mattisnotuncool
I knew when I saw the snare in the thumbnail that it looked familiar!
FINALLY, an actual video of somebody being a drum tech and doing the thing, as opposed to 3 minutes of actual footage, followed by 20 minutes of commentary babble about what they ate for dinner.
Awesome video, man!
100% agree
I was waiting for ah Video like this for years
“If you can talk the talk, you should walk the walk,” as the saying goes.
They're the hero drummer's deserve. A silent guardian. A watchful protector in the shadows. A Drum Tech.
That was beautiful, man.
absolutely agreed. boring day-to-day routine that is in fact becomes a killer show.
Nicely put!! Btw, you’re a f’n beast & I’m subscribed to you too!!
AGREED! LOVE your words btw!

Man, I had zero intention of watching an entire 45 minute video, especially when I am up against a deadline, in the middle of editing my own next video, but as a drummer myself, watching you was just so cool. Truly outstanding at your chosen profession!
he's the best, right?
100% same man!
I stumbled upon this video because I've been reviewing drum kits, I live in the north and I thought it would be a great hobby to pick up in the winter for those days I don't feel like going to the gym or doing anything, I can go play for an hour for cardio and learn a new skill! So obviously all of this is WAY above my head but I still watched the entire video, it was that good!
When you immediately recognize it's luke Holland's kit soon as you see the rack Tom
Ha ha, same!

Really enjoyed this video. It may not look like a big deal, but when a drummer can just sit down knowing everything is taken care of, it is a big deal. Respect!
I also use triggers to open the gates. Heres how it works. When you go into the channel for each drum, you can choose what the mixer is using to determine when the gate opens and closes. Typically the default option is "self", aka the mic that the channel itself is using. Variations of this include self pre eq, and self post eq. Another option entirely is sidechain to another channel. This is what's happening with the trigger. The gate on the tom channel is completely ignoring the mic, and only listening to the trigger instead. This way, even if the snare is wicked loud, it doesnt open up the gate and get bleed into the toms mics.
thankyou for explaining this haha
@@matthorndrums no shit, i was sure they just triggered the toms and were covering it up until an explanation appeared
Coming from largely acoustic settings, it's amazing how many mics go onto a kit like this. But it makes sense: in an arena situation playing metal, mic bleed is flat-out unavoidable, so to deal with it... you trigger the mics!
For anyone wondering what the heck a “gate” does (and why a trigger is being used for this task) it basically shuts off the microphone until the sound from that microphone gets to a certain volume, in which case it turns “on” the mic for whatever amount of time that the sound guy decides (usually one second or less) only to turn off again when that sound isn’t loud.
A piezo trigger can do this task more immediately than a microphone can, and when it’s attached the drum itself it’s way less susceptible to a different loud drum or cymbal hit making the microphone think that the volume level set to open the gate (aka “threshold”) has been hit.
Great video Matt!
@@nathanbulla1 I appreciate all of the explanations on that. I've learned a new thing to add to my knowledge toolbox for drumming :)
Matt, I've played drums and idolized drummers for 48 years. This video is one of the best I have ever watched! Thank you for showing me what you do to make sure another drummer (wish it was me) can have a smooth and consistent run of shows. I truly enjoyed it from start to finish. And I commend you for not screaming "FUCK OFF" at the idiot yelling in your ears at load out. Ida kicked his ass.
As a drummer I appreciated every second of this.
Behind a good band is an even better crew! Crews never get enough credit for their part in getting everything ready for a show. Great to be able to see your POV of a work day, thanks for sharing!
Nah no lie there needs to be more of this kind of content on YT this is dope as hell 🔥
You're so freaking cool, Matt. And a fabulous drum tech. Making sure the tiny details are in order (no loose screws inside the snare, checking if the heads were warped,) just goes to show that you know your shit. Loved watching this 45 minute journey! Keep videos like these coming 👏🔥
Thankyou so much phantom! After doing this for years you learn to check for these tiny details quickly because they can cost you lots of time later if you miss them.
@@matthorndrumsi watched your drum tech video from Luke Holland
We love you, Matt! Thank you for this video, brother . 🙏
Love this! So many tips plus actual BTS! Very well put together and great job!
loved watching this! so much goes into being a drum technician, especially at this level of production, well done man!
This was dope. Never knew how much work you guys put in!
Drums look and sound amazing. Your passion comes through so clearly. Also you are a stellar drummer. Way to go!
Hey Matt, love your videos. As a former semi professional musician, I can really appreciate all of it. It’s almost therapy for me. I’ve watched about five so far start to finish. I’ll be seeing them all for sure and looking forward to more. Good job, man thanks.
Great video! Thanks for the behind the scenes POV of your "day-in-the-life". I loved watching every detail. You rock man!
This is the drum tech video the world needed. Also, spot for documenting some of your thought process on the set up. I learned a few tricks watching this!
Dude this was awesome! The techs and stage hands are the real stars. You make it all happen. Thank you!!
this was so satisfying to see how smooth a job you did getting everything ready so quickly!
Beautiful kit your job is phenomenal as a drummer we all appreciate what you do. Keep those videos coming
I am not a drummer (my son is), but I’ve played guitar for ~30 years. I find the process of setting up, checking, and tuning the drums before each show mesmerizing. The tear down was also pretty rad. I have a ton of respect for the professionalism and consistency to your approach. I’ve always wanted to be a guitar tech and have zero delusions about how much work it is for every show for you. Made it all the way to the end would love to see another one of these at another arena somewhere down the road. Great stuff!
Loved the video, I’ve been playing drums for 40 plus years and did this so many times by myself, loved the perspective and the fact that you took the time to record and post so we can see what you do and go through. Much appreciated.
It's so cool getting a look at what goes on behind the scenes of rock/metal shows. You guys are unsung heroes. Appreciate what you do 🤘🤘
So much love and gratitude for drum techs everywhere. What a gorgeous Kit!
Such a nice video to watch! Thank you for uploading this. I´m a drumtech myself so it´s always so cool to see how other people work. Great Job man, you´re the best.
Worth the 51 mins to watch. This was sick.
Awesome video. Great to see the people who make the shows work and their work behind the stage before and after the gig.
This is awesome man! I’ve always been fascinated with all the behind the scenes stuff and this insight is great!
I'm a drummer and I love the concert process. SO interesting getting to see this. Good stuff bro.
I’m just starting my career into the music industry as a drummer and I’m always looking at videos like these to learn as much as I can and be as employable as possible.
I’ve been hoping a video like this pops up showing absolutely everything a tech is responsible for on a show day at a level like FIR and of the size this show was.
Can’t thank you enough, consider me educated 😂
Fantastic video and thank you for taking the time to put it together.
FANTASTIC!!! Thanks Matt for posting this. I watched EVERY SECOND OF IT. Riveting. Fascinating behind the scenes of what it really takes. I love that you even covered the lunch break. This is one of the best tings I've seen on the Net.
I knew I recognized the name you were the drummer for The Word Alive back in the days. I remember following you way back when and checking your instagram videos of playing the drums. Amazing drummer and now an amazing drum tech, Luke couldnt ask for a more detailed and well done job in taking care of those beauties.
Watched the whole thing like a complete nerd! Fascinating to see what happens to get the kit ready. I had no idea the main bulk of the kit would remain set up and transported like that! Great stuff. Cheers for taking the time to film (almost) the whole thing. 🤘🙂👍
Watched the whole thing and i am impressed: Love this kind of video: A very good insight of the hard and non-glamorous work on tour and no other bs going on. I love it! Thank you for this great video.
Buddy, I absolutely loved this. So much fun to watch you do your thing and show off all the little important details that go into making a show happen. I do miss this❤
Seeing the floating riser set up tells me all i need to know about the quality and standard of the production teams work! Loved this video. As a drummer and former stage manager/back line tech the background noises of the show getting set up for the day is nostalgic! keep up the killer work!
As a fellow drum tech, this is the best. I love seeing the process even though I know it quite well already!
Great video! I love the different perspective that you provide, and how much hard work it takes to set these shows up!
Mad props to you and all the crew who work hard to get the show going
Truly one of the most entertaining drum tech videos I've watched! From one gear head to another, I love the attention to detail, not only to the drums themselves but to the craft of playing drums. Subbed and look forward to watching more great content!
Thankyou sir!

Great video, outstanding from behind the scene work that you do. The drummer is lucky that you make his kit sound great. Be safe in your travels.
This is so cool… as a drummer myself this is a dream job! I can see how much you enjoy what you do. I appreciate all of the people behind the scenes at all of these concerts and all of the hard work you guys do so that we can have an awesome experience!!
THIS IS WAY BETTER THAN A MOVIE, Awesome tech man😎😎
That trigger/gate idea is actually genius. Never seen that before. Nice work!
they've been doing that since the 70s....oh god I'm old. This band sucks too.
Thanks for Sharing!!! It´s great that can show what happens before and after the show, the hard work to everything goes right, Cheers from Spain!!!
What a beautiful kit! Working on such high end instruments, is such a joy!
Duuuuude. I work as an stage electrician and i know the hard effort every do. Thank you so much for beeing a fundamental piece for the show. My respect and greetings from Argentina. I'm a drummer too. 🙂🥁🔥
Great video! 2 things:
1. You’re a great drummer!
2. Of course Luke has hit kit as his phone wallpaper 😂
Who is the band like what is the name.
Falling in Reverse
Excellent video. Thank you for taking the time to film and edit this! Great insight.
Thanks for the insight at this level of artistry. Really enjoyed seeing what goes into your job and passion. Also enjoyed seeing this drummers setup and how much thing have progressed over the years.
I think the keys to being a premiere drum tech are processes and procedures. You have both. Doing the same thing every time, whether it’s tuning, retuning immediately before, following the FOH instructions or placing your bungees in the same spot so that you always know where they are, you have to do these things so that your customer (drummer) receives the same experience every night. And then so can the paying crowd. Being so careful and meticulous is an art form unto itself. And you’re a kick ass drummer in your own right. Congrats on a terrific video!
Thankyou man, I appreciate that!
Very cool look behind the curtain. I was surprised at how much stuff is left on the riser during transport.
Thanks for sharing your perspective and working your ass off for the band and of course the fans
Loved the video. Could watch everyday, something we as drummers do day in and out but always enjoyable to see others do.
Much props! I watched the entire thing! As a drummer who has ppl set up my kit for me on my gig, I APPRECIATE THIS!!!✊🏾
Great video man! I'm a drummer myself and I'm in a band, and we're hoping to get the opportunity to play shows like this one day. Keep doing what you're doing, you're awesome!
I'm also a drummer in a band, it's my dream since I'm like 3yo to play in an arena like this
Went all throught the video. Thank you so much for sharing this part of your job and showing us behind the scenes of a big show.
As an amateur drummer, we do all this alone and your little tips are more than useful.
Brings back a lot of memories, man. Thanks for making these videos!
I love how no matter what, if you’re involved with drumming at any level, you lose drum keys, I love it.
I lose about 100 of them a year 23 years into my drumming career lol
Love this BTS look at what it takes to put on a show like this!
being my own drumtech i love learning from these kinds of videos... new techniques and even ways to save time ... appreciate you MATT and Justin!!!
What a fascinating & great video!!!
As a drummer for many years, I fully appreciate the amount of effort it takes to setup & tear down a kit. I never was fortunate enough to have a drum tech, so I had to do all this myself every gig!
I'm amazed that the bulk of the kit stays intact & secured to the drum riser. Never knew that was a "thing".
How was your experience teching for Luke? Would love to hear your pov of this side of production!! Thank you for this awesome video 🔥🔥
Amazing video, I'm really curious about the fact that you guys load in the kick drum and stands directly with the platform??? That's craaaazy
I've seen some bands leave the entire kit on the risers and load it into the truck. Seems like a bad idea to me.
@@truckingdrummer yeah right? I mean, they are the ones who know how does it work but for me looks too risky.. I'm curious about it
Stumbled upon your channel. Subscribed after 2 minutes. I have always been fascinated with this side of the show. Great video and awesome drumming.
A ton of work and appreciation for how you make it happen!
I've always been fascinated with drums and the whole setup.. thank you so much for this video.
Final got to watch the whole thing .
Thanks for taking us through your day and giving a look at some of what it takes to make a show go off without a hitch.
I absolutely made it that far in the video! All the hard work people dont see.. you guys deserve way more credit than you get.. I See alot of bands always thanking the crew on stage during shows as well they should! you guys are the behind the scenes dream machines! making them come true every show! you have earned a new sub sir!
Loved seeing this side of things. Great content man! You're the best of the best.
So great to see this bud. Thank you for showing. As a drummer who sets up and takes down his own gear...it would be a dream to have someone like you! It shows you care about your gig. Awesome work pal!
This was super cool. Killer shots of the entire process!
Found this so informative and interesting, love your efficiency and organisation Matt!
Awesome! Love seeing the real world behind the scenes stuff!!!
You're welcome! Kick ass video! Always wanted to see something like this. Safe travels!
Great video! Love seeing the behind the scenes of what goes on and all the hard work! Looks like a dream job, especially working with falling in reverse they're such an amazing band! Ill have to keep a look out for you at the next show!
So much respect for what you guys do. I play drums and play live shows, seemingly on a regular basis at the moment, and it’s hard work. Awesome footage man!
Well done. Thank you for taking the time to post!
Brilliant video , fantastic insight to what a drum tech does from beginning to end 😀🤘🇬🇧
Thanks Matt.
This video was so much fun to watch! The care, the hard work, and the incredible attention to detail you put into the role absolutely shows and it really made me emotional watching it. Thank you!
Wow thankyou so much! Im glad you enjoyed it!
Great video, man. thanks for showing your amazing work!
Yess bro! Love this video so sick to see a day in the life of a drum tech keep em coming man! 👏

hands down the best drum tech video on RUclips. This sets the new standard. Thank you for this!!
Fantastic video! Thank you for your insight as a drum tech. This is super inspiring as a drummer myself!
Made it all of the way through. Thank you very much for sharing! Loved the behind the scenes view.
I used to be a stage hand for 3 years, so this was very interesting for me to watch. Reminded me of the old days, watching you guys set up and always trying to offer a hand
Wow! This was a very cool look from behind the scenes that most of us never get. This was really neat. Thanks for recording and posting this. I don't think I'm the only one who wanted to see you cap off that day of hard work with an ice cold beverage for a job very well done! Thanks for letting us peek behind the curtain.
killer work man!! thanks!!
Thank u Matt I always wanted to c wat goes on and how everything folds and unfolds behind the scenes of a rock concert ur job is the beez kneez and ur an amazing drummer urself thanx again man u gained a new fan 🤘
