  • Dan Veall reviews the Tech 21 Bass Fly Rig Review for issue 46 of guitar interactive magazine.
Tech 21's Fly Rig has been quite a success for the company since its launch and certainly seems to fill the need for a product which a hard working, travelling guitarist can throw in his case and take from gig to session to gig, plugging into whatever is on hand and being assured he can get the same tone every time. So what about us bass players, then? Thankfully, Tech 21 has been working on that and I've been trying the result.

I have the version 1 and version 2 of this fly rig and in my opinion, the character knob and the tone knob on the compressor section, makes this version one, more versatile in terms of sound.

I also settled for v1! Yes it's true that you need to decide if the boost will be for gain (pre) or volume (post) and not both. but thas a fair compromise, you can always use the volume pot.

Fantastic! I used to carry around a full pedalboard but I found that I didn't use half the pedals plus it was super annoying to transport and debug when I had problems with a cable or what-not. This pedal seems nice and simplified, very compact, and doesn't require so many god damned cables to work. Seems like all the essentials are there. Definitely going to buy! Thanks!

I must say, you’ve gave me a good idea on what I’m going to get, thanks...
By the way, your bass sounds very good when it’s on its own too....

it sounded lake the Dingwall has already saturated sound, I think it would have been a transparent review if a different bass guitar was used...

I agree. He needed to turn down the Charcter and Drive, too. Gets really old hearing reviews with distorted effects msking the true fundamental sounds of the bass and a clean sound.

Great review, thanks! As I’ve noticed the SansAmp section produces some kind of “compression” effect by itself even at the medium settings of the gain (while playing loud or slapping). Isn’t it an “annoying” aspect of the pedal? Also the octave has pretty much distorted/saturated tone... I’m curious if it fits players that don’t tend to the heavy related music...

I'll try to answer your questions. I have this pedal and a sansamp rbi, which is the rack version of the classic sansamp pedal. There is some compression-like effects with the sansamp section of the fly rig, as there is with other sansamp products. It is a part of their amp simulator, and will change a lot as you turn the character knob. To my ears, as you turn the character knob counterclockwise, the sound gets more "compressed" sounding. I put compressed in quotes because I don't think that is the actual technical thing that is going on. A perhaps better way to describe it is that it pulls presence out of the tone, which you can put back in with the bite button. There is a TON of different tones you can get out of it. The small size and simple layout is deceptive, since the controls are all very sensitive. The character knob itself goes through a huge variation of amp tones in its range. I've spent a lot of time with this pedal and I'm still pulling different tones out of it.
As far as the octafiler section goes, it is quite versatile as well. Turning everything all the way up results in an insane and almost unusable tone in standard musical settings, but again, the knobs have a vast degree of adjustability, so having a little bit of octave, fuzz, or q is definitely possible.
I use this pedal in several different ways- I'll use the sansamp for an overdrive effect, which you can accentuate with the boost in the "pre" position. For my purposes, the fuzz is sonically similar enough to a distorted tone that I dont use it by itself at all. I'll use the octafiler section for crazy weird synth type tones exclusively.
If I'm using any amp other than my main rig, I will use the sansamp as the basis of my tone since I'm familiar with it and I can get a good sound out of it pretty quickly. In those cases, where I don't need a crazy distorted tone, it stays on the entire time. Otherwise, I just use it for overdrive, and it works very well for that purpose.
Hopefully that helps. I personally was not super impressed with the sansamp stuff when I first got it because I didn't understand what the buttons do. There is a learning curve with their products, and it does take time to understand and get the most out of them.

Question: when I add grit with a fuzz pedal (for example) my bottom end drops out at gig volumes (loud onstage settings.) I am looking to leave my head and heavy cabinets at home and plug this right into my band's PA... If I do this... Bass to this box... to PA... and I engage the Drive, and/or fuzz... does my bottom end hold up?

Sir I bought it this week brand new but couldn’t get any power signal is it because of the dc adaptor or the problem of direct amp output ?
