Don’t travel anywhere in the summer, but especially to high destination cities like Paris, London, or Rome. The crowds are overwhelming, the locals are overwhelmed, and no one looks chic in cargo shorts, a fanny pack, and a touristy tee shirt. Spring and autumn are great, but I especially like Paris in the winter. It is not that cold, the tourist are nowhere to be seen, and everyone looks great in winter clothing. And the Christmas decorations in Paris are not to be missed especially the windows of the big department stores. 😊
I just came back from Paris (watched some of your videos before going!) and must say that nearly everyone was so friendly and helpful. It's a big city but well organized and the multi-ethnic vibes are great.

I love Paris. I don’t think it is overrated, but one must have realistic expectations as well. I'd love to move there in a few years when we retire, but probably too expensive.
I actually got engaged ON the Eiffel Tower 24 years ago. Brownie points for me for THAT one.
The best Italian food I've ever had was in Paris, and I've been to a number of places in Italy. Something about the butter. But… yeah, Paris is about far more than just “French” food. And sometimes, the simplest things are the best… a hot dog with melted cheese from a stand in the park, a Croque Monsieur or maybe a jambon buerre from a corner bakery. And while I can’t remember ever having one there, supposedly BURGERS have become very popular there.
I know the jokes about how even the rest of France hates Parisians, but coming from a huge city myself (LA, as I said), I understand the mindset that you can’t always be nice to strangers, particularly when they're being annoying (like standing on the left, or walking SLOWLY three across in the sidewalk).
But I think the “trick” is understanding the different mindset, and knowing how NOT to be rude, and knowing when locals aren’t being RUDE but just doing what is normal for them (like giving an attitude when you're standing on the left).
I've found for the most part, everyone there had been very nice and as helpful as they could be. Sadly, most (primarily waiters) would almost always speak English which was always amusing because they'd ask something English and I'd respond in French. (I would hardly say I'm close to fluent, and forgot 90% of my conjugations and half the words, but I learned it from around 6 to 18)
But there are notable exceptions like trying to order a charger for my laptop in an electronics store, or finally actually buying it at a battery store that actually carried it in stock - neither spoke any English. Or calling around, trying to get my watch battery replaced (with no luck, I might add - had to be sent off to Switzerland) and nobody ever speaking English on the phone. But… they were all helpful and not rude at all.
Sure, everyone has to do the touristy stuff at least once, just like I expect everyone who visits LA to want to go to Universal Studios, the Getty Museum, the Santa Monica Pier, Beverly Hills and Rodeo Drive (which I don’t get - a bunch of overpriced stores that no normal person would ever shop at, and I grew up a few blocks from there).
But behind seeing the sites - once - I far prefer to just BE. Just experience the city, and do the things normal locals might do. In some respects, I've been lucky in that that’s primarily what I've done the last few times there - Christmas shopping when we were there in December 2022, or buying a new carry-on when I was there by myself for one day back in 2019. Or going to a pharmacy to get a COVID test when we both had COVID in 2022.
As for Paris being expensive… the biggest thing is the real estate. Our roughly 110 square meter condo here in LA would be around a million in Paris; here it is close, but a little less. But that’s still a LOT of money. But things like food seem CHEAP to me there. A croissant or pain au chocolate here is $4.50 or $5 or more, and well under 2 Euros there. Just went to breakfast with my wife this morning here in LA and pancakes and bacon, some grain bowl thing for her, a chai tea, and an iced tea, with tip was almost $60. Would have been probably more like half that in Paris unless you went to some touristy place.
Perfect? Nope. Paris certainly isn’t. Noplace is. But… I still love it, and don’t think it is overrated.
Third time in Paris last month! Cannot wait to return! Thank you, Lucile! If one visits Paris without knowing the culture, and expecting the same thing as back home, you will be disappointed. My first time was in 1984, had two strange experiences where two different people looked at me strangely. WHY? I never said BONJOUR before I spoke to them! So SIMPLE, but as a student, I did not know this! Now everything is WONDERFUL each time I return! ♥♥♥♥

I just got back from a 12 day vacation to Paris and I loved it. Every single thing. Even the people (who were very nice by the way). I always remembered to say bonjour and the other phrases I practiced before going there. I went with my daughter and granddaughter and we didn't go to the well known restaurants. We went to the local places which were really outstanding. The bakeries, shops, etc. ....... I will never forget the visit. Oh, and we stayed in the heart of Paris (9th). Busy, busy ... and lovely at the same time.
You summed it up quite nicely so Bravo! Love Paris and miss the Boulangeries-pâtisseries and the never-boring long walks!
I visited Paris more then once and I have been to all those cities you mention and all I can say is I loved all my experiences and I know sometimes cities do go though a hard time but for the most part I had an amazing experience and everyone was very nice to me. I plan to go back and do it all over again, Merci
I visited Paris for a full week in Spring 2022 and fell in love with the city.
I liked the architecture, the buildings, the lack of cars and traffic, the small cafe and restaurants, the food, the wine, the overall "artistic" vibe which is profound everywhere you go.....did I mention that I'm a fan of the Napoleonic era as well???.....well add this too! Probably an unpopular opinion but I think a lot of people who are put off by Paris bring it on themselves. Travel is discovery and being outside our comfort zone. If you’re nice to someone, they’re going to be nice to you 99% of the time. We avoid tourist areas and try to blend in. The joy of Paris is discovering the small shops and special mom and pop restaurants that blow our minds. Paris taught us to slow down and appreciate the details.

My Wife and I are planning a trip to Paris and taking some friends with us that have never been there, so in the research phase I stumbled upon your channel and have enjoyed it immensely. We have stayed in the 5th, 11th and 10th Arrondissements and have enjoyed our time there and are staying in the 9th in October.
I am not sure if this would be a viable topic for your videos, but what we have to balance is having half our group experiencing Paris for the first time while we are looking to expand upon our experiences. Our friends have suggested we find new things to all explore together which sounds great, however I am not sure exactly what to look for and could use some ideas.

Usually what we do with our friends who visit is a mix of doing stuff we want to do that's not super touristy together, us showing them our favorite things to do in Paris and then having them explore the top highlights on their own :)

Love this! I remember talking with one of my neighbor's friends and she didn't like Paris.. I enjoyed it. I realized all she experienced was tourist stuff with 3-4 days and had certain expectations. I shook my head. I told you the best way to appreciate Paris is to live like a Parisien even if it is stereotypical. I told her for instance I didn't visit the Louvre nor Eiffel Tower. I instead I walk through the grounds to get to Le Jardin des Tuileries. Got some coffee & croissant. Went for a stroll. Later then went to the Pantheon. I reminded her that it is always best to slow down and have one or two destinations in mind per day and then just stroll around & explore. I believe I have this attitude because my first city travelling to Europe was Nice and the French Riviera. Travelling leisurely.. taking my time.

I was in Paris (and Europe) for the first time in November. Overall, I had a good experience and the locals I interacted with were all very nice and helpful. I've decided I want to return for a longer visit and want to work on learning more French. There is so much I didn't get to do. My expectations were realistic. But it is a big city and like any big city can take sometime adjusting to the sheer volume of people and navigating public transportation.
Stayed in Belleville per your recommendation (just got back) and it was vibrant, friendly, picturesque in its own way, and nobody spoke English back to me when I tried my French. A lovely surprise.

@@LucileHR I have to agree, especially about the food. Really proves your point about the multi-cultural nature of Paris. Lot's of North African street food and bakeries near where I stayed, along with a bunch of Chinese places interspersed with classic French cafes and bistros. The park offered a really lovely view, and the metro got me everywhere I needed to be within 20 minutes or so, often less. I ended up walking to the Seine from my hotel and it was lovely, safe, and showed me many of Paris' diverse colours. Thank you very much for the recommendation!

Yes, I just got back yesterday after spending 10 days there. The idea was to practice and improve my French. Fat chance. Everyone just speaks English back at you. I think much of the problem is that transactional stuff like buying a coffee is short and intermittent, so the quickest and most expedient thing is to just use English. By my last full day on Sunday, when I ate in a restaurant somewhere near Art et Metier, the serving woman actually asked me if I wanted to practice my French; I was so demoralised by that stage, I gestured that I didn't care.
the only expectation i have of paris is good pastries, desserts, and food in general! i'm friendly enough to compensate for others! 🤣but seriously, i tend more towards a slower pace, popping in and out of random shops that catch my interest and seeing a few sights along the way. would i like to see some of the big sites? sure! do i feel the need to go in or up, nope. that's the way i traveled when i was in london and i really enjoyed myself.
My favorite place to merge with locals would be to go out on the banks of the Seine where locals are dancing in the open-air places such as Square Tino Rossi in 13arr, not far from Jussieu and Institute du monde arabe! I really love that place, this is a must.

First time through Paris, seeing none of the sights except from a distance, I only knew two phrases, which I worked to perfect: "S'il te plaît," and "Merci." With that, I found everyone to be super friendly and helpful and I had a great time.
Years later, having become proficient in a more Québécois French, I went there and would ask someone if they spoke English. If not, fine, I spoke French, but if so, I would let them speak English if they wanted to while I spoke French in return, trying at every moment to complement how well they spoke English. Those who went with this seemed to appreciate the chance to practice their English while they would kindly correct me on my odd style of French.
I love Paris, though it's only recently with my son that I was able to see the "tourist" version.

I’ve visited Paris several times over the years. I use my high school French whenever possible to express myself (not always successfully!) and have always been treated politely.
As a Japanese person visiting Europe few times, i thought Paris was one of the unhealthierst cities. I got off my station to go to the hotel, and there was a line of smokers like a chimney. People were throwing trash on the street too. If you did that in Tokyo, our people will look at you funny. However the Louvre was incredible, packed with history art... I don't know if it's a cultural thing but unusual to have people doing unhealthy activities like that.

Is anyone else as overwhelmed by hotel choices in Paris as I am? Every time I feel as if we’ve settled on a place I find one even more spectacular. If anyone has any suggestions on 4 to 5 star hotels that are more boutique than chain for example, I would be overwhelmingly appreciative. We are there for a week and a half September and then continuing on to a tour of Bavaria afterward. We prefer to stay in one hotel, and will be visiting Versailles for a day trip and Normandy for a few days, but at least a week in Paris so having a hotel near the hub of all, we’d like to experience is a plus. I understand it’s impossible to see everything we want to see but would like a mix of tourist, hotspots and local experiences. I’m just spoiled for choice every time I turn on RUclips and I find other suggestions, so I’m casting a wide net to many who have been there in the hopes of getting some legit tourist experiences.
I'm from New York City preparing for my first trip to Paris in June. It looks so beautiful. It makes me feel New York is overrated. I love it because it's my hometown. But I don't know why anyone else does? It's sounds so similar to NYC when people have to get up at 5am for those empty shots of the Brooklyn Bridge. And yes! The same with NYC! most people who live in Manhattan are transplants. Sorry, but wannabe New Yorkers playing the part of a New Yorker. Sometimes they are the worst :/ Looking forward to watching more of your videos before I leave.

Chaque année, je viens à Paris. I've been going there several times a year since 2008 (except the pandemic). I have many friends there, so my experience isn't one of a tourist, and I rent the same 2eme apartment for each trip (I was there in December, going back in May, then returning in September). I go to special exhibits, but otherwise avoid the tourist areas. In other words, I go there and just "live my life." No matter the destination, it seems most people rush through to chase the museums and monuments. I understand that, but slowing down to really take in the culture and resist the urge to look at everything through a camera, will, in my opinion, give a visitor a better sense of what makes Paris so special. To me, it's like a region of connected villages (arrondissements). Each neighborhood has a different vibe. I walk most places to observe things, but the metro, especially on the Right Bank, makes it easy to zoom around.
Prior to the pandemic I traveled to Paris two to three times a year for pleasure, relax, and never had a bad experience. The secret is to be polite. After the Olympics, I'll go back.
I just saw a notice about the Chicago Bean. It is currently inaccessible on account of construction in that area.
Went to Paris or the first time in August 2022. We are going back next month. All the way from Australia so it shows our view of Paris. We love it.
I went to Paris in 2013 and I'm going again in June. Not only was I not treated badly, but everyone went out of their way to help me at a time when I couldn't speak French. So I can say that the stereotype that they treat you badly is absolutely false.
Dirty and dangerous? I don't know if it's because where I come from (Buenos Aires) this is unfortunately becoming more and more common, but I didn't find Paris to be so at all.
Crowded? it's one of the biggest cities in the world, and full of tourists on top of that! And it didn't seem so crowded to me.
Expensive, it might be (not too expensive either), but it's worth it.
All in all, I loved Paris and I can't wait for June so I can be there again.

I would buy an apartment in Paris if I found a cute brunette French girl to take care of. I loved walking around, taking the trains, the people, the food. It's a unique place.

I was just in Paris last week and watched your videos before going. I rented an AirBnb in the 20th Arrondissement. People were very polite and spoke English after my horrible "bonjour" in an American accent. They appreciated the effort. Walking around to the local bakeries and cafes was fun. I did walk around to see the tourist spots but it was more fun walking around streets away from the sites and watching Parisians sitting in parks eating lunch or people watching. I found the City very easy to navigate either by walking or using the Metro. I think Paris is just like any other big city with big city charm and big city problems. I do believe that people have unrealistic expectations because they don't do any research before traveling. Again, I learned so much just by watching your videos and another RUclips couple called the Les Frenchies who also live in Paris.

I never had a problem in Paris as a English speaker. Everyone was very nice and helpful. Quebec Canada however was was a different story.
In Paris visit the parks, visit the small neighbourhoods and their markets, the Canal St Martin. Take your time, watch the world go by.

Paris is really nice, but I wouldn't be suprised if it has the lowest rate of (lifts + escalators) per metro station of all cities with metros. You constantly have to climb stairs. I know it's an old network, but so has London and I feel London has more lifts and escalators.

I love Paris and know it like the palm of my hand, spent years as a lil girl and many years eversince here as an adult. I am also an art and architectural and urban historian with a lot of opinion about cultural and visual imagery in cities …. Paris is becoming a living museum with tourism running every aspect of life here … a bit like Venice without the horrendous annual submergence! But imagine all the popular beautiful places flooded with people and content-creators …. And Parisians, the true ones, moved out of Paris but still love it in their hearts and try to avoid the ones who moved here to create content. Just enjoy it, be mindful and don’t buy into any stereo-types. And if you see someone creating content smile and be positive. Only you can have your own unique experience.

Well, love Paris. But have a shock memory the worst baguette I've experienced in so many countries I've visited or lived in. Talk about ED. Maybe, having moved there from Germany - good god, the bread there is the best on the planet. Though I read in Germany it's now difficult for bakers to get recruits. My 2nd gripe - the bureaucracy is breathtaking. Simple things: posting a package, only some POs allow this, registering my German auto in France - forget about it. However, maybe things much changed now.

I sent a week in Paris and loved it. Such beautiful architecture and surprising clean for a large city. Parisians obviously take a lot of pride in their city. As an American I had always been told how Parisians would be rude to me but the only rude people i found in Paris is Americans yelling at waiters. Great city...and my God, the food, so good.
J'aime me promener dans Paris, voir les gens, l'architecture, les vues et bien sûr écouter les sons. Les musées, monuments, etc. sont très beaux mais tout le monde y va.

Childhood memories of Paris are great. Later on it retained the allure. Last visit was horrible, because of robbery attempts on the street and in the metro. Also, it wasn’t possible to walk under the Eiffel tower, because there were soldiers guarding it. Perhaps it’s time to give it one more chance, before saying adieu.
The two times I’ve been called “stupid American” was in Paris by hotel bellboy and on a train to Paris by the conductor. I have no clue why the bellboy got all hot under the collar, the conductor was just ticked that boarded his train early.

Yes, it is such a beautiful city! It's one of the oldest universities of Europe like Oxford/ Cambridge so it has a very unique architecture

I am bemused by the tourists visiting the Palace of Versailles. It is impressive architecture, but I wonder if they give a thought to how the last occupants met their end. It is a bit macabre. Perhaps they should call it the palace of the headless king. On the plus side, at least the French got rid of their monarchy, unlike other countries in Europe.

I have visited Paris and NYC many times. NYC is great, but nothing can compare to Paris IMO.
BTW, New Yorkers will not be able to throw their trash bags on the sidewalk much longer.
Due to the rat problem, they will have to place their trash in solid containers, like everyone else.

I totally agree. Paris for me perfection, even in a garbage strike🎉, even in the rain, even with train strike. Walk walk and open your heart to culture you will never be disappointed.

if someone tells me where they live, idc where it is, I'm definitely not going to tell them all the things I hate about that place- Paris or anywhere else
I owe a lot of my quality of life to Paris. It was the first place I went traveling internationally outside of the USA in the 1980's and did I get lucky choosing Paris first. The main lesson I learned was asking the question "What is quality of life?" and ask that question all the time, because the answer can change. Every day, ask "what is good quality of life?" Americans really don't ask this question very much. They assume they know and move on. I take traveling very seriously which to me is to learn, which in Paris means keep your mind open and walk a lot. 😁😂and I got my mind blown in Paris from the quantities of history, museums, quality of food, whimsy, how can a city be whimsical?! but Paris is! And even the cafés have a lesson. If you travel to learn, Paris is almost unbeatable. If you travel to party I have no opinion but I feel that Paris probably wouldn't be as good at least for me. In my opinion nothing beats learning a whole bunch of new things and then taking a rest and having a coffee and a pastry. And Paris is mixed with all of that. I want to thank you for this great channel and I want to thank France for teaching me so much and I want to thank Paris for all it gave me. Do your research before you go -that's another trick to enjoy it the most. Know when peak tourist season is and do not go then, go around peak tourist season. I owe so much to France and Paris, they both opened my eyes in new ways, it's very very weird to me but there it is and I said it. Vive la France!❤Gratitude!

I have been to Paris 3 times it’s is the most beautiful city. Like you say it’s a big city though, so things can happen. I think people just like to complain

I’ll visit Paris for a couple of days but I’ll be in South of France for a whole week.
I wasn’t born in Paris so I can’t call myself Parisian but I love it here. yes it’s dirty and expensive but so what, I always say chin up en enjoy it. I found especially for visitors, the best way to explore Paris is to hunt for invaders, it gets people motivated to walk all over the city instead of catching a hop on /off to all the normal tourist places. Good pub crawling vibes…

As a non-Paris citizen I kinda think and feel like everyone wanna go to paris if they can.
Yeah I don't think I would want to go to the crowded tourist places. I'm a simple pleasuress guy.

Parisians are nice to me (in general).
The "diversity" of Paris is probably why its overrated. Every big western city is "diverse" now which counterintuitively makes them all feel the same. You go to Tokyo and you feel like youre immersed in Japanese culture, not so much with Paris. The only cool stuff is the old stuff from when it was still distinctly French.
I find the Paris bakery culture amazing and I don't care about all the posh Parisians looking down on me for eating 3 croissants for breakfast.

Paris is definitely not overrated. I just spent 10 days and enjoyed polite Parisians, beautiful architecture and amazing quality of food. London and New York ARE overrated.
