  • The first job was a small extraction on a Honda Civic that had become trapped in some soft sand at a trailhead parking area.
    It took little effort to find them, and little effort to extract the car. Soon they were on their way.
    The next day we were called by the sheriff’s dispatch to respond to a 911 call for a pickup truck that was in a precarious spot on Kolob mountain. We didn’t have much to go on.
    Dispatch told us that the people were safe, that the vehicle was in trouble, and they were able to give us GPS location. But they did not have any other information such as vehicle descriptions, or the exact predicament the truck was in.
    We headed out in the little yellow banana to see what we could see. Upon arriving at the GPS point, and not seeing any sign of a vehicle being recently driven in, we started to fan out and explore every road circling out from the center of the GPS pin.
    Finally, after we felt we had exhausted every possibility, we headed out to a point where I knew I could get cell phone reception.
    A few miles down the road we came across the vehicle we were looking for, quite by accident, as it was about 5 miles off the GPS coordinates.
    When we arrived, we found the truck precariously perched on the edge of the road with two wheels hanging over the bank.
    I started calculating the angles, and rigging up so we could pull the truck back onto the road.
    Within a few minutes, the truck was back on solid ground.

      xj is very impressive.!. they are kind of the "sleeper car" of the offroad world.
      and this guys xj has replaced all of the weak stuff and has front dana 44 and rear dana 60 with disk brakes, coils, and lockers all the way around.!.

    • @RenaxTM91
      @RenaxTM91 4 года назад +12

      @JonsReef 220ft lbs is enaugh to get the job done, and thats about all you need...
      The reason for using a light weight XJ is they float better over sand and mud, gets into (and out of) tight spots really well.
      Theres no use of having a big rig to tow stuff if you can't even get to where the cars are stuck, and time and time again that little XJ has proved itself to be strong enaugh to complete the recovery...
      There's probably still better rigs out there than a old XJ, but on top of being good enaugh they are cheap, parts are cheap and they're pretty easy to work on...
      I would do a cummins diesel swap in it if it was me, but for Matt whatever does the job sticks, if something works he's not fixing it!

      Its called skills, always remember skilled labor isnt cheap, and cheap labor isnt skilled!
      Now he has designed the Banana, and it is majorly modified, most new trucks claim they are 4 wheel drive, when they are only 2 wheel drive.
      If they say 4X4, they are 2X4, unless you paid more money to make them true 4 wheel drive.
      If you didnt order it that way you have a 2X4 and will never be a true 4 wheel drive.
      I have proven this to many people with $70,000.00 dollar rigs.
      I will put my XJ up against any stock Rubicon, and I have less then $3000.00 in mine, with no after market lockers.

      @@geraldg3130 here it's the Prius drivers that are the worst. I had one stuck on the beach and I gave them a good price since I was already there and they refused 😒 I warned him about the tide coming in and he took it as a threat 😂.... long story but the cops were involved and the next day I got a call for a swamped Prius and a $200 job turned out to be$1900 and the best part was when they were complaining to the insurance company about how I tried to rob them the insurance company refused their claim because they refused service that would have prevented the total loss 😂

    Matt, this video makes a great case for a winch. When you had to get a second bite your friend was in a precarious position. A winch would have allowed a slow, steady SAFE recovery.

    • @ejwall
      @ejwall 4 года назад +9

      Not exactly. A winch would have just commanded the Jeep to slide towards the Ford. They needed momentum to get this truck up and over the lip of the road.

    • @emi123nem

      EJ Wall strap the Jeep to a tree and you can get out of the vehicle and perform the recovery Incase it goes south

    • @myauctionaddictionestatesa7451
      @myauctionaddictionestatesa7451 4 года назад +1

      @@emi123nem yep, with a sideways position I like to tie off one end and winch the other. But any time ite precarious its winch only, spool much safer. Of course my rigs are so heavy they dont move. My Power Wagon never moves. However if it was extremely dangerous tieing the winch rig off is a good move. Thankfully those situations are rare.
