its so odd. It seemed like Fila and Champion were brands that nobody wanted to wear because it was a walmart brand. Now they're some of the most popular brands.

You are talking about the fake China Fila's that are cheaply made and tear apart in days. The original Fila's are made in Indonesia(pure 100% leather) and today they are made in Korea in multiple materials.
I got my first ever Fila shoes back in high school and lasted until college. For some reason, it became my lucky pair of footwear due to various instances. I miss that first pair. I'll get one if they re-release it. IMO, they last longer than Nike.

For me, Adidas have best combination of price and quality.
I grew up in the 90's. This was explained perfectly in my opinion. I think it should be said that even though Grant Hill did sustain Injuries and its true that he was no Michael Jordan or Shaq, he was still solid when he came back and was able to play until he was close to 40. The fact that Fila signed him to a lifetime deal shows their loyalty and is cool, but it also shows his popularity. Hill was never controversial in any way and he was (and still is) just a likeable guy. People remember that when he was on top of his game he was NASTY on the court. Interesting to look at Fila from the US perspective. Being from Italy, I always associated the brand to tennis apparel and underwear. It was indeed more popular in the 90s, but even in the 2000's I recall tennis products being regularly sold in sportwear shops.

I worked in clothing retail for the last 20 yrs. So I've seen their products hit shelves and racks at TJmaxx or Marshalls stores, compared to Fila clothing stores that I use to frequent. Mike made a very good video here, and he mentioned some good interesting points, about originally an Italian brand, then sold to America, then to South Korea, etc, and opening up to the more urban and female market, etc, and the list of reasons he gave are all true...as to why Fila (since around 2016) is soaring again....but he left out one very important reason. Here is what brought Champion back: nostalgia from those of us born in the 90’s Here is what brought Fila back: kids born in 2003- trying to mimic the nostalgic fashions of the 90’s in order to appeal to a broader demographic on their social media of choice
You couldn't be more wrong. Champion came back because of a collaboration done with some streetwear brands Fila has a lot more reasons as to why it came back
i started college in 2018 and i think a huge majority of girls were wearing those thicc chunky fila shoes for a while, it was like a meme and it was like everyone was buying them thanks to social media people wearing them and talking about people wearing them. It was a fad, and it's starting to fade again.
Foot Action USA sold Fila's for cheap. Always on sale in the 80s. I use to buy a new pair a week for $20 100% leather and not made in China. I have been buying nothing but Fila's since 1984 to this day. Just bought 3 more new pair tonight.

90's Nostalgia is a big thing now, so I can see why they're making a big comeback I wonder how long before companies in the 2000's will be a trend soon.

There’s definitely hype for them in the sneakerhead community - they make nice-looking stuff. It’s a 90’s revival thing for sure. Reebok Pump shoes are also making a comeback
Could you do a video on Malt-O-Meal? Their cereal is so good and I'm really curious about how big the company is or inst. I think a video on them would be awesome!
I'm a 90's kid but I've never worn Fila's. I believe kids use to get dragged if you wore them back then. I guess they are making a comeback because I was shopping on a site and seen a pair and my mind was blown. The design is so amazing and the best part is it looks like NOTHING ELSE OUT THERE.I just bought my first pair of Filas and I can't wait to try them on!!.
I think it depends on the part of the 90s; it really was like two different decades. I entered the 90s at 8 years old and left at 18. I never had Fila but I sort of remember them being all that in the earlier part and, in the later part, you would get dragged for wearing them as you mentioned.
Unrelated to this video but I find the history of puma and adios one of the most funny and interesting. In fact that's a video I'd like to see on this channel.
I'd love to see a view of alternative sporting companies that are not well known in the USA. Brands like Ellesse, Sergio Tacchini, Kappa, let coq spotif, umbro, Diadora, asics, etc.
I wear Fila because of their shoes, fila shoes are just fire. I also recently bought a full training suite of fila and it fits really well with the shoes

Since I was born in 1996 I don't have any memory of the good times for FILA. My only memory of them is seeing them on a rack at Ross, Marshall's, TJ Maxx, or Burlington Coat Factory and skipping over their items on the racks. It's cool to see a company bounce back though even if I don't have a personal connection with that company. Since we're on the topic of clothing brands, here's a request from me: do a video about SUPREME!! Their business model is revolutionary and has changed the entire clothing industry at large. Kind of reminds me of the Anti-FILA! You'd NEVER see a Supreme shirt on a Ross rack in a million years!!
Fila were huge in the 70's and 80's here in UK and now a HUGE revival for those classic designs are sought after. Thankfully Fila is rereleasing them. Thank you Fila.
*This is one of Company Man’s best videos. Well done. And I’m one of his most avid critics but he analyzed FILA to the T here. FILA is one of the most ultimate 90s product. It’s amazing that they were once revered a major competitor to NIKE. Black and inner city people like me loved them because they were affordable and they were actually great shoes. Rappers would wear them in their videos as part of goldenage Hip-Hop and of course music artists are always great endorsement. But as music changed so did taste in culture. Fads come and go. When FILA first hit the Hip-Hop community, it was a big thing. The novelty was sensational. But eventually that novelty wore off. NIKE dealt with similar issues in the 2000 recession, how they were going to remain viable as new products come in. But Nike remained king because they had all the most popular athletes but more importantly the bankroll to offset a momentary fall in revenue. There’s really nothing that separates Nike from FILA: both are quality shoes, both are made in sweatshops and both have been overpriced. But Nike has always captured the image of the elite and affluent whereas FILA developed an association to poverty, one that it could never recover from. I do wish Company Man talked manufacturing and other related costs for FILA. But overall I thought this video had great content.*
Yeah I was impressed because I was already quite familiar with FILA and you taught me some. You and the channel Business Casual are truly at the best at these business documentaries.
90's revival seems to be a plausible boost to the brand; I've seen kids wearing Fila, Champion & Adidas garb that looks to've been salvaged from their parent's wardrobe.
I was a teen in the 90s & this brand was pretty popular so I agree that since everyone right now seems to love everything 80s/90s, it makes perfect sense that it's making a comeback.
I remember the FILA hightops with the strap and matching sole from the early 90s😃. They were partly successful with that shoe because of the price and seeing 2pac wearing them gave them street status. Everyone had a pair or 2.
The best and most durable and comfortable shoes I ever had were fila putting to them thousands of miles walking and playing for over 6 years. I still miss them ;))
I remember I had a pair of Fila basketball sneakers in the late 90's and they were one of my favorites. They looked so futuristic that I used to call them a spaceship.
It's so weird how Fila just keeps popping up everywhere for me Starting seeing Fila ads on my facebook timeline. Then I see your video pop up on my Sub feed.
I remember Michael Schumacher had FILA shoes as a part of his driving gear back when he was with Ferrari. I was a little kid back then when I saw it and since then I've always wanted FILA shoes
Back in my freshman year of high school, 2009, I needed an actual pair of tennis shoes for tennis. I didn't want to spend a lot of money on Nike or Adidas shoes, so I just went with a pair of shoes from Fila. I thought it was some no-name brand or one of those discount, chain store brands. I still have them and they still hold up. Only now did I learn that tennis is Fila's thing and that they aren't some Great Value-like shoe company.
Yamcha Kippur I thought that too! One of my friends in 4th grade so like 2013/14 ish some kid was saying how they had fila shoes and I just assumed it was Walmart brand
I had the velour burgundy track suit back then, the track suits were very popular with drug dealers back then, they were over 200 dollars in the 90's. I remember going to the Fila store in Brooklyn off of Nostrand Ave and Flatbush
In the mid 80s Fila sold for over 100 dollars. Kids were getting beaten up and robbed for them. If you wore fila you had the perception of having money. Rappers and D Boys wore them.
Yeah mahn iam an Indian and most Indians dont invest in branded shoes like Nike , Adidas etc and when they they go for Nike or Adidas. Indians consider Nike as top notch then Adidas followed by Puma ,Fila and reebok is somewhat lookin cheap. i personally never bought any Fila product the least expensive was a puma shoes
Excellent report, so accurate and on point. I had a pair in 1996, I remember them being big and chunky, and they lose their lustre and freshness if you wear them regular, which you would when you are 16 years old as I was then. I think the price had something to do with why I bought them.
I was born in 1996 in LA and FILA to me was always a “low end brand” that ‘gangsters’ and ‘bangers’ wore. Maybe that is just my perception but nonetheless that’s the impression the brand has made on me...
Yea you still young but back in the 80's when it was expensive it was only for big time drug dealers. An very hard to get they sold for $112 back then when the average good shoe went for $50 Back then you could find addias on sale for $39.99. Fila was as big a Gucci an Bally. They also had the velour tracksuit that cost $350 (which is like $700 in our money today) that were really big at the time. They were very exclusive an hard to get so when you seen someone with Fila it was an indication that person had money because Fila was an expressive brand that was made in Italy like Gucci
I grew up in LA and I was born around the same time, but I would say Fila was not a gang brand. It was much more a crackhead/dope fiend or a kid from a really poor family brand.
Mike made a very good video here, and he mentioned some good interesting points, about originally an Italian brand, then sold to America, then to South Korea, etc, and opening up to the more urban market, etc, and the list of reasons he gave are all true...as to why Fila (since around 2016) is soaring again....but he left out one very important reason. Definitely the SK ownership and K-pop influence in Asia has contributed a lot to the brands popularity, it really blew up over the last few years here in Japan when I never saw it pushed before
@akapen sensei Yes....She wasn't beautiful but there was just something about her that was so attractive and of course she was a great tennis player too.
As an 80s baby, I remember when Fila was, briefly, popular (like, 5th and 6th grade lol). They fell off the map, then came back out of nowhere recently. Glad this came in my recommendations because I'd def say 90s nostalgia had everything to do with it. First thought that came to my head when I first saw people wearing Fila was, "oh shit! I remember that!" lol.
I currently have a $80 pair of Nikes, $75 pair of Pumas, and $30 pair of Filas, and the Filas are the most comfortable of the three. They just make a decent shoe for a good price that fits my foot well.
For me Fila really became popular in the mid 80s with it’s track suits and tennis shoes! The hip hop community had really embraced them and there was even a hip hop song called “Do the Fila!”
I remember people in my middle school making fun of Fila because the products didn’t look “cool” and because you would only see Fila in the lower end stores (here in Canada at least). Now those same people are showing off their big ol’ clunky Filas trying to fit in, society is interesting lol.
As a 13 year old I definitely think it’s just good stuff at the right time. Everyone thought of champion and Fila as “cheap” brands but now that they are making better stuff in a market that people like with still an ok price they are taking off.
Yeah they're still around , but the story is not that interesting , at least not yet. They relaunched in the early 2000's , with some celebs. They mostly focus on late 80's / 90's retro wear these days.
its so odd. It seemed like Fila and Champion were brands that nobody wanted to wear because it was a walmart brand. Now they're some of the most popular brands.
They were huge in the 80s just look up fila suits in rap lyrics. Their track suits sold huge in the hip hop rap community in the 80s.
Depends on your age. Late 80 early 90s it was cool to wear it then they fell out of being cool. Now with hipsters and nostalgia they’re back it won’t last though.
Exactly, maybe the same might happen to other 90’s and early 2000 brands - Juicy Couture maybe 🤷🏾♀️

@bee boo maybe its cuz your getting a size too small ?
You forgot an important factor of their comeback. Their partnership with Fendi
This is an absolute fact
Well Fendi makes great clothes ngl I always loved what they were selling in their stores but never been able to afford anything.
That explains why they rather sell their products in the high end markets.
FUBU is gonna make a comeback soon, mark my word 😂😂
Start stocking up
They gotta come with something Hard
Lol. They already have
Let's hope 😂🙌😍
Hire rapper Drake to do an Old Navy commercial to sneak in a FUBU hat for free advertisement? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA (I wonder if anyone got that inside joke lol)
I had a proper Fila Tracksuit in the 80's made in italy its retail price was about $700. It went from super premium to cheap and nasty
That makes you 70 years old.
Can’t forget the Fendi collab they had. That helped them out a lot in my opinion.
Yeah that was fire
Now Starbuks
Yeah that was cold
I always thought they couldn’t have that big of a market selling basically huge bricks on feet
HELP MY!!! My muscles are too big! I am a big tall man and my muscles are even BIGGER! I use them to get views but they HURT so much!!! Because they are heavy. Do you have any advice, dear finger
@@AxxLAfriku did you get hit on the head?
Yeah that’s something he missed. The whole chunky shoe trend helped them come back
I love their shoes lol.
Filas are the ugliest shoes ever....
Here is what brought Champion back: nostalgia from those of us born in the 90’s
Here is what brought Fila back: kids born in 2003- trying to mimic the nostalgic fashions of the 90’s in order to appeal to a broader demographic on their social media of choice
You couldn't be more wrong.
Champion came back because of a collaboration done with some streetwear brands
Fila has a lot more reasons as to why it came back
Basically hipsters
I grew up in LA in the 90s and FILA was huge
I grew up with lower end shoes, and I still buy them when I need sneakers from time to time.
yup kids made it popular again, this new generation is bringing a lot of the 90’s brands back to the spotlight specially thanks to the internet
i started college in 2018 and i think a huge majority of girls were wearing those thicc chunky fila shoes for a while, it was like a meme and it was like everyone was buying them thanks to social media people wearing them and talking about people wearing them. It was a fad, and it's starting to fade again.
i still want them. i;ve wanted them since i was a kid in the late 90s
I wearing one of these shoes when I was a toddler. They're actually durable as hell. I'm gonna buy one or two for running after this pandemic
I wanted FilA so bad when i was in my early teens but could not afford them, back in the early 80s.
I understand. I wanted to buy Fila sport shoes back in the 90's but I couldn't afford them either. We both survived anyway 😁
Foot Action USA sold Fila's for cheap. Always on sale in the 80s. I use to buy a new pair a week for $20 100% leather and not made in China. I have been buying nothing but Fila's since 1984 to this day. Just bought 3 more new pair tonight.
And that is that Fila is a VERY GREAT-LOOKING, STYLISH, AND AMAZING SHOE.
We need more videos on Multi-level marketing and pyramid schemes.. btw i love your videos
Well illumanaughty has a loads of videos recently on them
Check out Savannah Marie! Her entire channel is essentially dedicated to exposing MLMs and educating people to avoid them pr help them get out.
Kiki Chanel also has a lot of anti-MLM videos.
90's Nostalgia is a big thing now, so I can see why they're making a big comeback I wonder how long before companies in the 2000's will be a trend soon.
Fila was more popular in the 80s than 90s.
ME: Grant Hill is endorsing FILA again?
SON: Who's Grant Hill, dad?
Go to your room.
I mean as a European I know Shaq and and Michael Jordan but Grant Hill? Never heard of him before.
Beat they ass!
Who is grant hill
Yeah the grant hills IS what I really like that's pretty much hill that's a classic.
Fila is an 80s hip hop brand to me. There was even a dance called the Fila in like 88 or something like that.
Lies again? Wi-fi LA Liga
There’s definitely hype for them in the sneakerhead community - they make nice-looking stuff. It’s a 90’s revival thing for sure. Reebok Pump shoes are also making a comeback
Crazy how Reebok in s a Walmart brand now the clothes anyway saw a Reebok shirt and was like WTF? Lol
I remember when they came out , I thought they were called “Fils” because the “a” looks like a cursive “s”. I like _Fils_
Bro me too! lol
Same
same, I thought it was french, since 'fils' means son 🤷♂️
Thanks. I thought I was the only one... 😅
wasn‘t sure about it until about now 😝 what a stupid idea to write it like that
Could you do a video on Malt-O-Meal? Their cereal is so good and I'm really curious about how big the company is or inst. I think a video on them would be awesome!
I love ur videos
Didn’t expect you here
Da fawk is that
Oh hey Hunter! Glad to see you enjoy his content😁
Hi hunter senpai
Remember Airwalk? They were cool for like 5 minutes in the 90s
Oh man i forgot about them
found those at payless years ago. the soles didnt last a week omfg
Hahaha omg my parents would buy me those from Payless
I also got them from Payless too. Forgot I owed those shoes
Airwalks was the best skater shoe in them day's and doc Martin's was a nice but really for skin heads
I’m glad to see Fila make a comeback.
Hell nah you get dragged for wearing them today 😭
I think it depends on the part of the 90s; it really was like two different decades. I entered the 90s at 8 years old and left at 18. I never had Fila but I sort of remember them being all that in the earlier part and, in the later part, you would get dragged for wearing them as you mentioned.
Unrelated to this video but I find the history of puma and adios one of the most funny and interesting.
In fact that's a video I'd like to see on this channel.
he's done a video about adidas!!
adios?
Hell yeah
Adios is a skate brand.
@@Countmacula666 oh, Adio. yes, Adio was a skate brand.
I'd love to see a view of alternative sporting companies that are not well known in the USA. Brands like Ellesse, Sergio Tacchini, Kappa, let coq spotif, umbro, Diadora, asics, etc.
Umbro is sold in U.S. Targets. Kappa seems to be a hype brand in the U.S.
Asics are popular in us...if your a walker, jogger, runner.
Everything you named we wore in the 80s. Lotto also.
Saucony?
@@KeithWilliams-er6ss Saucony is an american brand.
You should do Nordstrom and how they've managed to survive in the age of Amazon
Welp they closing 2 stores near me lmao. RIP.
Sounds very valid questioning!
There was a spike in the late 90s you mentioned, it was huge, crazy, everybody wanted Fila
I wear Fila because of their shoes, fila shoes are just fire. I also recently bought a full training suite of fila and it fits really well with the shoes
Who else remembers seeing them at Sears🙋♀️
bathroom mirror selfies with one leg on the sink table thing showing the shoe is my perception
What helped Fila’s come back in the UK was the characters wearing the vintage gear in the movie ‘The Business’. That movie made the 1980’s so cool
I live 2miles away from the factory where fila was born (Italy)...........and it’s still in business!
Fila was already extremely popular in urban areas in the 80s, as most designer brands were.
My dad never stopped wearing Fila! He’s excited they’re back in full force!
Go your dad 🙌
Is your dad excited that the price went up?
OMG i remember in junior high, so many kids had those grant hill sneaks, especially the GH2.
I remember it came real popular cause Tupac had them on too.
Really appreciate the kind words xele. Happy I was able to win you over with it.
Yeah I was impressed because I was already quite familiar with FILA and you taught me some. You and the channel Business Casual are truly at the best at these business documentaries.
i was in the vid, cool
POGGERS
how’s that?
@Smiling Cat it is him he just change his name check the comments in the cinnabon video he commented that like 4 months ago
90's revival seems to be a plausible boost to the brand; I've seen kids wearing Fila, Champion & Adidas garb that looks to've been salvaged from their parent's wardrobe.
I only wear Vans so I have no clue about any of this, fascinating to see how Fila bounced back though! Thanks for the video!
Hungry Creature Productions ya Vans gang
I was a teen in the 90s & this brand was pretty popular so I agree that since everyone right now seems to love everything 80s/90s, it makes perfect sense that it's making a comeback.
This and Lotto was my favorite shoes in 90s as a teenager! Ahhh Nostalgia !!! Thank you for this video!
Do K-SWISS
Havent heard of them lately
I still wear KSwiss , one of my favorites.
On Lotto sneakers.
I remember the FILA hightops with the strap and matching sole from the early 90s😃. They were partly successful with that shoe because of the price and seeing 2pac wearing them gave them street status. Everyone had a pair or 2.
@@factcheckerchannel1947 ......I'm still waiting for TROOP and BRITISH KNIGHTS to make an appearance😄👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿
You did a good job
explaining it.
I just bought a pair of Fila trainers, best trainers I've had in years, since my ADIDAS Torsions back in the early 90s.
Adidas Torsions! Holy crap, now that's something i haven't heard or seen since like 1992! The cool kids wore them in my high school..
It's so weird how Fila just keeps popping up everywhere for me Starting seeing Fila ads on my facebook timeline. Then I see your video pop up on my Sub feed.
I can't really explain anything, but I did buy a pair of FILA's a month ago because BTS was modeling them.
BTS more like BS
@@Channel-hb8vx duh 🙄
I remember Michael Schumacher had FILA shoes as a part of his driving gear back when he was with Ferrari. I was a little kid back then when I saw it and since then I've always wanted FILA shoes
You covered this pretty well bro, great job 👌🏾
I had a Fila track suit in middle school with the Grant Hills. It was 1996 for sure 😆
I had the velour burgundy track suit back then, the track suits were very popular with drug dealers back then, they were over 200 dollars in the 90's. I remember going to the Fila store in Brooklyn off of Nostrand Ave and Flatbush
2:38 _Made in India_
Nobody in India wanted to buy a FILA
We all preferred a _Adidas, Nike or Puma_
They felt a lot cheaper compared to these brands
In the mid 80s Fila sold for over 100 dollars. Kids were getting beaten up and robbed for them. If you wore fila you had the perception of having money. Rappers and D Boys wore them.
Yeah mahn iam an Indian and most Indians dont invest in branded shoes like Nike , Adidas etc and when they they go for Nike or Adidas. Indians consider Nike as top notch then Adidas followed by Puma ,Fila and reebok is somewhat lookin cheap. i personally never bought any Fila product the least expensive was a puma shoes
It was the fendi collab that got me back on board with fila.
U gotta be joking
The 1996 Grant Hills are my favorite Fila’s.
Nice! I posted this comment before I saw it was in the video 🙏
I has a pair of the low tops. There were really decent shoes.
You had a error at 9:47 haha. Loved the video!
Grant Hill got hurt and never recover. History may be totally different if Grant Hill never got injured.
So crazy that Fila missed the kobe craze with him having Italian roots also.
5:26 Nostalgia at its finest! I wanted a pair of those GH2s so bad that I got the straight As my mom requested lol.
Definitely the SK ownership and K-pop influence in Asia has contributed a lot to the brands popularity, it really blew up over the last few years here in Japan when I never saw it pushed before
You skimmed over the popularity of FILA in hip-hop in the mid-80s
I think the Korean wave does play a role in this. And BTS are endorsing fila.
Having an ankle injury while endorsing shoes is not a great situation.
When I think of Fila, I think of Jennifer Capriati, who was a pretty big tennis start in the '90-'00s.
@akapen sensei
Yes....She wasn't beautiful but there was just something about her that was so attractive and of course she was a great tennis player too.
You should do a video on the ball company... you know the mason jars? They’re bigger than most people know.
Seconded.
In certain regions of the US, FILA was pronounced "FEE-LIE".
Fact!
fee-lie, really? That's hard to pronounce. I could see "fee-lee" maybe, but fee-lie?
I thought this brand was Fils. It was always some obscure brand here.
You need to update it again!
New news: They are closing all but 2 stores in the United States by the end of July 2021
Literally wearing a Fila shirt whilst watching this
Boss🙌
I'll give anyone a thumbs up that uses the word 'Whilst' .
Of course you are.
When I was little, I thought the last letter was an "s", like "Fils", sounds stupid lol :)
Not so stupid! "Fils" (with a silent L) is French for "son" :)
You forgot to mention NBA player Jerry Stackhouse had the Fila Stackhouse 2. I wore them as a kid in 1998.
As a 13 year old I definitely think it’s just good stuff at the right time. Everyone thought of champion and Fila as “cheap” brands but now that they are making better stuff in a market that people like with still an ok price they are taking off.
Does Pony shoes have an interesting enough story? They're one of those "are they still a thing?" brands.
Yeah they're still around , but the story is not that interesting , at least not yet. They relaunched in the early 2000's , with some celebs.
They mostly focus on late 80's / 90's retro wear these days.
British Knights! lol
