Fun fact: The shoe that was REALLY banned was the Nike Air Ship but Nike secretly changed the story, retroactively, to make it seem like it was the Jordan 1. Also, the Jordan 1 and 2 weren't popular until 1994, when they re-released (aka Retro'ed) They were so uninspiring, since the Jordan 1 bared resemblance to shoes like the Nike Air Ship and the Nike Dunk, that Jordan was planning on leaving for Adidas or Converse, since he now had their attention. Nike tasked a rising sneaker designer, now currently known as the most successful sneaker designer of all time, Tinker Hatfield in charge of making the Jordan 3. MJ was so set on leaving Nike that he was actually playing golf and not planning to attend the meeting but his mother forced him to hear them out and they showed up to the meeting hours late and Tinkers presentation blew Jordan away, it didn't look like any other basketball sneaker on the market and it was a smash hit. Tinker designed Jordan shoes 3-15 and returned for the 20. Side note, he also made such iconic sneakers as all the original Air Max of the 90s, the Hurache, Air Trainers and Phil Knight believes that Tinker Hatfield saved the company and is to credit for most of its success.

I get almost all my shoes second-hand from reselling shops and most of the time I get New Balance since they're about half the price and stand up to rain, mud, lawn care, gardening, hiking, and more. I did get some Nikes from a department store closing sale and I did like those quite a bit, though not enough to pay twice as much! I can't remember if they lasted any longer, but that's just my experience with a single pair.
My younger brother has always been the one who had to have the newest trends, in 1989/1990 this meant he had to have Air Jordans. On the other hand, I was less inclined towards popular trends and preferred less saturated brands/styles. Instead, while my bro was showing off his Jordans, I was subtly rocking my Nike Quantum Force shoes, which I picked out because I was also a fan of the TV show, "Quantum Leap." :-)
He was in a runner's magazine though, in the movie. So it makes me wonder, which came first? I'm sure, being an absolute timeless cultural force, the movie was a big contribution to spreading running overall
Growing up in nyc, I’ve always been a sneaker girl. I love shoes, but I don’t buy or wear them much because I love sneakers so much, styling/dressing them up and down. Nike has always been a go-to, though I love at least two or more styles from every brand. Adidas had some really good designs when I couldn’t afford to indulge, but I haven’t been feeling them in recent years.
@@LacyyGerelli Indeed, it's meant to be reactionary. Most people don't realize the prevalence of borderline slave labor that exists within Nike's manufacturing process of their shoes. If you've purchased Nike, Nestle, or iPhone products you're obtaining merchandise fully or partially produced using slave labor. It's honestly disgusting. What sucks is that the Nike shoes I've had in the past tend to outlast most other shoes. Most Nike shoes last a whole year and a half before falling apart, while most other shoes are lucky to make it past 8 months before falling apart.

I will admit I always will have a place in my heart for British Knights! During the 80s, they lasted me my entire school year and never once fell apart
That transition from the intro to the Swoosh has to have been the best editing decision you've made on any of your videos.
I've always loved my Reebok HiTops but nobody makes'em like they use too
Learning that running/jogging started out as a fad in the 60s and 70s suddenly makes a joke in That 70s Show makes sense.
In an episode Donna's parents start jogging and Kitty doesnt know or understand it. If I remember correctly she even yells out at one point "What the hell is jogging!
Someone should make Company Man an honorary professor. I learned so much from the videos and love hearing what he has to say
Remembered learning of Nike via MTV in the early 90s. I can assume they were influential in sports and pop culture at the time, and if this video covers that.
Nike was by far the biggest marketer of their footwear in media, making key deals with influential rappers and actor throughout the industry in the 80s/90s. Sure Reebok and Adidas hd their athletes and fans but Nike ran the board. Ex Forrest Gump Michael Jordan Marty McFly Fresh Prince Kid n Play etc. the brands saturation in the media has definitely led to their saturation in the market.
@SerpentOz Then explain some dreams that foretold our future for example, or how the earth and the sun can sustain life on their own. And don't say they're from aliens.
And what does God (ST) got to do with Nike? 😣
@@OmarAlikaj I believe in god but sorry what dreams? And about the earth well it formed over billions of years how do you think the moon came to be oh yeah a lost planet collided with the earth and over another few billion years the moon formed as for the sun it's just a giant ball of flaming gas that will explode in 2 billion years

@Mcillsonn bro your probably the same person that's wears air force 1s and the Jordan 1 is the most iconic shoes of all time
This was fascinating & very well done!
I hope ypu do more episodes about ANY company because you do it better than anyone on youtube!!!!
I see what you did with the Nike logo at the beginning, nice.
I agree,
I really hope he does that for more intros.
I don’t know how but your channel became nostalgic in just one year
Fun fact: The shoe that was REALLY banned was the Nike Air Ship but Nike secretly changed the story, retroactively, to make it seem like it was the Jordan 1.
Watching this right after watching Air! I like this overview, it really makes sense!
The Japanese company I’m pretty sure turned into ASICS I think.
Yes
Yeah... they actually made it to mainstream success by selling great shoes.
I remember when Company Man channel first started. So happy to see his growth 👍🏿
I fell in love with Nike even more after reading Shoe Dog. Found the book on the train in New York and was expecting such a good story.
Great video as always
This is the best video you've ever made... and I love all your videos... so that's saying something.
It seems like there may be a good story about Nike’s somewhat complicated relationship to golf that could be a separate video.
Thanks for this video company man! So excited for the next one!!
In the sandlot, when I saw the Nike shoes, I thought they were like, magical. Top tier product placement
What Nike, also that's an anachronism. Nike was founded in 1964, the Sandlot takes place in 1962
I used to wear Nike Air Monarchs, but as they got old they would bleed out this blue ink and they had a squeaky sound when I walked. This happened with 2 or 3 pairs. I eventually switched to New Balance and love them, never had an issue.
Sounds like my collection over the years.
@SerpentOz wtf is this spam
That transition from intro to logo was pretty dope. Nice touch :)
Always preferred Adidas to any of the other brands. I just think the style looked better, and their running shoes always hurt my feet the least.

Amazing video! I love how Jordan saved Nike, I imagine if he signed to Adidas as he wanted what would have happened to Nike.
And the banned shoe wasn't the AJ1 it was the Air Ship, but Nike used this as a Marketing campaign for the AJ1✨
Wait a minute. Are you telling me that the Nike Cortez actually started out as Onitsuka Tiger? 🤯
Yeah they did copy other stuff contrary to popular opinion
@SerpentOz no
@Holden Tudiks I think the original shoes were called Aztecs but some other company said they already had that name trademarked for their shoes. So Bowerman said to name the shoes after the spanish guy who conquered the Aztecs. Thus the Cortez
I thought it would be some sort of puff on how genius or good products, companies and creators of those companies, are. But luckily, you brought many factors that could really widen my perspective on why and how the brand could make a success and what could cause it's decline. Great video, really unexpected gem. Highly recommend reading Phil Knight's memoir "Shoe Dog". He explained in one part why his company 'Blue Ribbon' stopped selling Tiger shoes (aka Asics) since the Japanese company went behind their backs and let other US companies sell Tigers dispite Blue Ribbon being their sole distributor. Thank You Japan/Asics for creating Nike 🙌
shoe dog was an awesome read, i loved it
In The Last Dance, Michael Jordan revealed that he almost didn't take the Nike meeting at all because Adidas we're just the shoes he liked more.
His mother, however, insisted that the polite thing to do is take the meeting with Nike, even if they weren't as big.
Somehow, mom seems to always know best.
Well not paying any State or Federal taxes for the last 3 years probably didn't hurt their bottom line eiither.
And Chinese child labor making their products helps with profit margins too.

If I’m smart enough to own and run a multi-billion $ company I’d be smart enough to do it more ethically. Think about what the products cost and what you pay for it. There’s enough profit there to pay wages that aren’t slave - just say’n.
You can bet I am watching this right after watching Air in theaters 🤣

I have literally been waiting on this episode since your first episode
Without question Nike wouldn’t be where they are today without Jordan. Nike instantly became the pop culture goto sneaker. As a kid that’s all we wanted to wear. All thanks to mike and his 6 rings
My family was too poor to buy Nike's. We had always gone to Pay less for our shoes. My aunt who married into money back in the 70's actually got my younger brother and myself a pair of Nike's for the start of our school year. I at the time thought it was the coolest thing ever, to finally have something that made me look cool. Only after about 2-6 months of wearing them all the time, the shoes started making a strange sound every time I would be walking around. I had to finally retire them and went back to pay less for one of their in house brands. Once I started working and earning my own money; I tried Nike again and it was OK, but Then I discovered Under Armor. I am never switching back. Best shoe I have ever used
This makes Forest Gump make more sense.
*Forrest
Hahaha, I was thinking the same thing when he talked about the running fad in the 70s.
I've been too solid to ever wear stripes on my sneaks.
Checks over stripes☑️
Can’t lie tho, yeezys are 🔥
My younger brother has always been the one who had to have the newest trends, in 1989/1990 this meant he had to have Air Jordans.
You forgot to mention that Forest Gump started the jogging craze. lol
He was in a runner's magazine though, in the movie. So it makes me wonder, which came first? I'm sure, being an absolute timeless cultural force, the movie was a big contribution to spreading running overall
No He Didn’t, 😐
He Said Himself.

Just do it. One of the greatest brand slogans ever made and one of the biggest motivational single sentences ever said.
Marty McFly wears Nike
Miles Morales wears Jordans
All sports players wears all different Nike brands!
Growing up in nyc, I’ve always been a sneaker girl. I love shoes, but I don’t buy or wear them much because I love sneakers so much, styling/dressing them up and down. Nike has always been a go-to, though I love at least two or more styles from every brand. They do such a great job at incorporating new technologies and materials into their old and new styles, and they also fit true to size. Adidas had some really good designs when I couldn’t afford to indulge, but I haven’t been feeling them in recent years.
Say what you will about Nike, those 5 year old Chinese boys sure do make a damn good shoe.
Uh what
@@atristand5603 Right? They haven't been made by children in sweatshops for years. They're now made by more affordable Uyghurs
What a gross comment
@@LacyyGerelli gross but true
@@LacyyGerelli Indeed, it's meant to be reactionary. Most people don't realize the prevalence of borderline slave labor that exists within Nike's manufacturing process of their shoes. If you've purchased Nike, Nestle, or iPhone products you're obtaining merchandise fully or partially produced using slave labor. It's honestly disgusting. What sucks is that the Nike shoes I've had in the past tend to outlast most other shoes. Most Nike shoes last a whole year and a half before falling apart, while most other shoes are lucky to make it past 8 months before falling apart.

Nike sales in the early ‘80s: _declining steadily_
Michael Jordan & the Nike brand: “And I took that personally.” _drops Air Jordan 1s_
I’m sorry this isn’t a question but I thought it’d be a good video, could you cover Richard Montanez and hot Cheetos? Apparently there’s a scandal happening right now
When I was younger, a family friend who didn't understand brands would always complain about how his daughter refused to wear any shoes that didn't have "that damn check on it." He never understood what was so special about "that damn check" 😆
ONLINE sales have been great during the pandemic. Sales should be even better now that everything is getting back to normal prepandemic
I think this video could've been extended further to talk of the modern struggles of Nike. Back in 2015 and 2016, Adidas became the premier athletic company, especially with their boost technology. Especially with the signing of players like Harden, and with Kanye's Yeezy line, they really put a dent in Nike's marketshare. There's a lot to talk about with them.

Damn Jordan liked adidas? Shit that would’ve changed history if he actually got a deal with adidas damn.
Adidas wanted him but they were in over their heads in debt at that time and the CEO said they just couldn't make a deal. Michael's parents had to nearly literally push him to fly to Portland to get the sales pitch from Nike. The rest is history.
That was pretty slick with the Nike logo in the intro!
