    Coming from a 10-year-old Apple TV - I needed a new one - "obviously"...
If I were to only need a new remote I figure the $60 price tag would be well worth it. How can a remote control be so great...
1- quickly open a new app with Siri & button location
2 - new trackpad becomes intuitive very fast - may be too sensitive on occasion
3- having a Mute button on it is well worth it - I use it all the time. & not having to dig up the television remote -
4- the size is just right in the hand - the flat sides (ala iPhone 12) are gold - Very ergonomic.
    5- Rechargeable battery - hala
6- Being able to easily use the controls (most used are the mute, volume & pause buttons) without requiring to pick the remote up is also nice (for me 50% of the time) Lots of smaller remotes are not so well designed in that way! After a few more days I end up using all of the buttons in that way & less so the trackpad part.
7 The ability to start and shut down Apple TV * television with one power button is great. I use the power button all the time - it is the only remote I need to use now.
8- the backspace button is concave - makes it easier to find as the other buttons are not.
9- If you are scrolling down on a grid of icons and are not sure which one you are currently on - you just need to highly brush the touchpad and the icon will jiggle as you do so. Fn Brilliant...
10 - Build quality is top knock.

For the Apple TV 4K (future proof for newer set & improved resolutions) 32GB- what I like best - in no order
    1- Up Next cue.
    2- Faster
    3- Just better overall
4- Able to lock in playback speed in YT (not able to do that on the old A tv - firestick did not permanently lock it in)
5- TV+ app integration with some other apps
One thing I will miss for ease of use (as on the Fire Stick remote) is to be able to simply with a 2 button press (1 long - 1 short) "save to watch later" a video while browsing on RUclips. With Apple, it is way less easy (more miserable - 8 button press) to do. Apple has now fixed this - you long press the trackpad button when you are hovering over a video
    12 months later for me.
I think it works great overall
I love having the mute button - a game-changer when letter ads run their course.
The trackpad is good and I use it a lot - except there ends up being many false actions that occur.
The Siri button is used occasionally and the button location is spot on.

The #1 reason is TV calibration which you didn’t even talk about. Makes your screen night and day better while watching on Apple TV. When I switch over to cable box, Roku 4K stick or over the air I’m shocked at how much better the TV looks on my Apple TV. I’ve tried to calibrate on my own with other sticks and just can’t get it close. This alone to me justifies the cost, turns your OK 4K HDR LED into a great monitor.

I have the amazing A8H oled TV from Sony and yesterday I bought the apple 4K Gen 2 Tv. The reason for this is because I have 3 HomePod minis. It’s gonna give that extra and more rich experience watching movies and tv shows. These Sony OLED smart TVs don’t need a steaming device at all they are pretty incredible by themselves but if you’ve got Sonos or HomePods to now have a surround sound system it’s gonna be worth the jump especially if your in deep with the ecosystem. But the last Apple TV I’ve purchased was the first gen 4K. With and TV+ app now being available on every other streaming device, even native to some cable TV boxes, Apple hasn’t demonstrated a reason to pay five times the premium other than just bragging rights at this point. These days I actually use my Roku Ultra more as I wait for Apple to give me a reason.

I stick to the poor mans AppleTV, a MacMini 2009 available for peanuts (25€ or so). It does not do 4K or HDR, which I don't care about as the content for that is not my taste, mainly action flicks. The majority of my watching is 1080p24 Blu Ray content with DTS Master Audio, and 1080p50 free-to-air DVB-T2, and 1080p youtube. The Mini can handle all that, including ad-free RUclips, while as far as I know the Apple TV can't deal with BluRay rips in MKV on my NAS. The Mini also allows easy changing of 24/25/30/50/60p so my TV playback is always smooth.

Reasons the Apple TV box is better than whatever's built into the TV:
    - UI layout and performance that won't change. A new TV will have a completely different OS than the one you're used to, and it's probably worse.
    - The AppleTV's box actually streams at a higher bitrate than the Web version.
    - TV remotes are shocking to use, iPhone users can just use their phones as the keyboard/remote.
    - iTunes purchases sync up. Priceless when you can't watch something because you don't have a subscription with the right IP provider. Seriously, TV is a mess in 2022. There's too many streaming services swapping IP every 5 minutes. iTunes also upgrades purchases to 4K for free if they update the store.
    - You can download any app for any other streaming service. Whilst I prefer to the "less is more" mentality, I do share Netflix and Prime accounts with others.

Not doing anything groundbreaking from the others? How about colour correction for your tv and sound correction? You didn’t even mention these features and they are huge. Content just looks better on the Apple TV 4K compared to watching it on another streaming device (I know I’ve compared it). I love mine and is the best streaming device hands down

What’s the difference in using the on your tv vs buying the box?

  • @anaymakan6989

Why im planning on getting the Apple TV for my 2019 4K Sony Bravia OLED. 1.) Apps are slow and sluggish so an Apple TV with the A15 would be no issue. 2.) AirPlay support, the amount of times I’ve wanted to show photos or screen share to the tv and i just can’t. I have to use a HDMI cable with my iPad or laptop instead. 3.) Calibration Mode. The ability to calibrate the TV with ur iPhone makes so much sense as they all have Face ID anyways so why not use that sensor to make your TV more accurate as well. 4.) Apple only apps, currently I have switched to Apple Music and there is no alternative on the TV so I would like to get an Apple TV for Apple Music. 5.) Thread support, recently bought a set of nanoleaf LED lights and they connect via bluetooth but you can control then when away via wifi via Apple TV which supports thread as well as HomePod mini.
So at the end of the day, yes, something like a fire tv stick or google chrome cast can do 80% of the job or even the built in tv apps, but the extra 20% such as airplay, calibration, thread smart home support is where the extra premium for the Apple TV is justified.

One reason why I continue to buy Apple products is it’s easy-to-use interface and connectivity which the competition lacks considerably. I have AirPods, iPhone, and recently added the Apple TV and they all seamlessly connected together.

I bought an Apple TV 4K 3 months ago and everything worked great with my Dolby Atmos system until earlier this week. Now my Apple TV garbles the sound on anything from any app that is not Dolby atmos. I have to turn Atmos off on the Apple TV and set my audio to Dolby 5.1. If I didn’t want to have to go into my setting whenever I want to watch something and take advantage of Atmos content I would have spent less money on a FireCube or a Roku Ultra. FAIL APPLE FAIL

Try watching Netflix on Apple TV 4K. Some 4K titles appear to be blurry and poor quality. The latest is the Gray Man. Netflix just refuses to release good 4K quality to work with Apple TV 4K.

I was surprised to hear you say that the remote was a reason to buy it. I think it's a reason NOT to buy it. I find the remote to be horribly unintuitive, zipping around to places I don't want it to go. You've got an inner button that picks up on directional motion and outer surfaces that also do the same. I'm constantly overshooting my desired app. My question is... Why? Why have two areas doing the exact same thing? Annoying. The reason I got the device was for accessibility to services that I couldn't get on Roku or Fire TV stick. WAY too expensive though.

What are you talking about saying that there’s no features that you can’t get elsewhere? What other TV set top box plays Apple Arcade games for one
what other TV box does your iCloud photo memories for two
what other TV set top box works with FaceTime with SharePlay for three
    What about Apple Fitness+?
just in just a few seconds, I listed four things that the Apple TV set top box does that any other TV box cannot do

    A few reasons not to:
-no USB input to directly load high bitrate files.
-local Dolby Atmos files get converted to lesser quality Dolby surround.

The point you make about long life of Apple products is important. They support their products for many years meaning you aren’t continually pushed into the upgrade cycle so many companies rely on. Apple build quality products that have a long life and are supported with that in mind.

I've got the whole Apple Ecosystem going (macbook, ipad, phone, watch, airpods max)...but not the tv as I don't watch a lot of tv. I'd probably not even use an Apple TV much. But...I'm in that mood! haha >.

The biggest issue with Apple TV is Dolby atmos sound . It simply works when it wants to, I have updated it and there are still issues , I have to usually open and close Disney or HBO for it to work, and it never works with Netflix, I was really hoping that IOS 16 update would address those issues .
