I always think of this video when looking at serrated edges. The shock and awe on your face after the cut is priceless. I'm thinking of getting a Talwar soon and prefer the look of plain edged knives for the most part (though I love the serrated Vaquero!), but watching this again has me thinking of getting the serrated.
I know this video is a few years old, but the results were really amazing to me. Thank you for doing this, it has opened my eyes about several things. The results on both blades were stunning, how well a sharp quality blade cuts is devastating. Thank you.
Very good review Hissatsu! For this 5.5 inch blade, serrations are definitely much more devastating than a plain edge version. Some kept whining about how hard it is to sharpen the serrations! The sole purpose of this blade is for a last ditch self defense rather than utility use! ..,,
One big disadvantage to Cold Steel's serrations are that they take forever to sharpen. And AUS 8A will go dull relatively quickly. So unless you know how to sharpen serrations properly and have a lot of free time on your hands to do so. The plain edge is probably the best way to go.
Hissatsu5 I've kind of moved beyond sharpening stones these days. I bought a Kalamazoo 1SM 1x42 and belts from 200 grit on up to a leather belt with 1/4 micron diamond paste. Although I free hand now and then to maintain my skill (For when the zombies come and there is no power LOL). Being able to get a hair popping edge from a bone dull blade in 2 minutes has ruined me for that kind of time intensive sharpening anymore LOL. Cold Steel has some nasty serrations for sure. But they're too high maintenance for me. Great test though. The reason I found this video is because I'm about to get a 5.5" Talwar plain edge. So I appreciate the illustration.
In my opinion a man should have at least 2 knives on him at all times, one for regular edc tasks, and one if the need ever presents itself for self defense
According to glen the CEO of coldsteel a serration cuts 40% deeper and will cut clothing and even leather better than a straight edge. I don't care for serrated blades for edc but for strick self defense they give bigger nastier cuts
i cant decide which one to get so i ordered both XL in carpenter steel..great test vids, keep them coming. maybe you can try to double up on the jeans just to see on how may layers the serrated edge would be effective..just a suggestion tho.
Very interesting. Thanks for the test. I remember owning a fully serrated Tenacious and accidentally slapping my thigh with it. It left a nasty looking jagged cut that of course left a scar.
I almost Lost a finger because of serrations so I already know how devastating they are.... I Heard they tend to be catching loose clothing sometimes, is that true?
And I assume it would depend on the blade shape too. Like, I wouldn't think a sweeping persian type of shape such as this would have that much issue with serrations catching, but something like a Spyderco Civilian for example seems like it might be able to bunch up clothing material in a problematic way...
It might be interesting to look at different finishes on the plain edge as well as to set the angle of the scratch pattern on the more coarse finishes to best suit the cutting. In particular if you are snap or draw cutting where the blade moves backwards (you pull the blade towards you) then the angle of the scratch pattern should be on a 45 so that the teeth have a rake angle similar to a pull cut japanese saw.
I really like my Voyager Vaquero XL in serrated form, although I don't think of it as a good utility knife. Nonetheless if there's ever a SHTF moment, the Vaquero would be in my sweaty little fist. For utility use a Voyager medium clip point (plain edge) sits in the left front pocket.
I noticed how you stopped after sticking your thumb into the pork loin ...as if you realized you just proved that it really doesn't take much for the serrated Talwar to be actually LETHAL. Kinda scary. Which is why I got the 4" & the 5" versions. Thanks for the review! Watched it at least 10X already. It's fun to show the serration haters..
@@chrisdyck6524 I am a big fan of veff and Spyderco serrations becase they cut better and are more robust for utility task but the cold steel ones work just as well for social work
80% of the early Spyderco Police Models were produced with Spyderedge (serrations) There’s a good reason that was the case. Serrations aren’t “cool” in today’s “tactical folder” world. But if you want a hell of a practical and tactical EDC Knife, get a Spyderco Shaman with Spyderedge serrations. There are plenty available and often at a discount to straight edge
it didnt look to me like the secound swing was the same lvl of foruce as the plain edge i think they would cut the same giveing equal force i could be wrong but thats just a guess but most people are right on here this type of knife is used for defesive purposes not edc i still would go for plain any day of the week
Now ...I just got the XL 5 1/2". YUUUP! I'm all for inflicting the most amount of damage with the least amount of effort. And you gotta love when you pull this knife from your pocket and it automatically deploys. Everyone around goes "HOW THE HELL DID ALL THAT KNIFE FIT IN YOUR POCKET?!"
Not sure any of you have a clue about the practical purposes of plain edge vs serrated blades. Of course the serrated blades always work better when cutting through coarse material, that's the entire purpose of a serrated blade. It tears, not cuts, through man made materials like denim, nylon, etc. That isn't the function of a plain edge blade. Have any of you ever held or used a knife outside the damn kitchen?
I have if you subscribe to my videos you would know that. I have a few videos of my and my brother sparing even got some one on one with Lynn also if you have proper serrations and you keep them up they will slice and even shave!
That was directed at most of the people commenting below, not directed at you. While serrations can be very share, they are simply no replacement for plain edge. Every blade type has their purpose, there is no one size fits all, and knowing the function of each is how to properly choose your EDC. These yahoos are running off and buying a serrated based on this video, lol.
This test doesn't control whatsoever for how far back the blade was on the piece of meat. Given the ease at which both sliced through the meat, I bet they would cut equally deep (probably all the way through) if the strikes were identical.
Wasn't making fun I miss I spelled that i just thought it was funny u still ate it before the review was over that cracked me up Idk I'f most ppl still would of ate it
Serrated edge is always better for self-defense. However once a straight edge gets beat up, it is as good if not better than serrated as a self defense weapon.
10 years on and a great video. Literally trying to decide between the two and came across this video. You made up my mind for me! Thanks!

Generaly speaking serrations always bite but cs serration can be fragile compared to others
Don't worry about the serrated being hard to sharpen. By the time you chop up enough people to dull it, the Cops will have found you by then.
+Mad Stork i was thinking the same so i got the plain edge to kill the cops
+Julianne Johnson ...Don't bring a knife to a gun fight.

Great tests! Ordered both! Waiting on their arrival as we speak. I too was surprised at how DEEP the serrations bit into that meat! GREAT video!!!

Serrated edge can be helpful for diving purposes . For cutting ropes and staff it would be excellent choice .
I like serrations for diving but I don’t dive as much as I would like it’s like owning a boat you just thow money at it

Crazy cutting power, wow. Great demo, man!
Please do a test with the BlackTalon II serrated that I EDC most. It's such a scary blade...
My brother has one and I think he wants that video on his channel
I almost Lost a finger because of serrations so I already know how devastating they are.... I Heard they tend to be catching loose clothing sometimes, is that true?
Yeah I'd prefer to see a test like this simulating a loose hoodie sleeve or something than tight denim.
And I assume it would depend on the blade shape too. Like, I wouldn't think a sweeping persian type of shape such as this would have that much issue with serrations catching, but something like a Spyderco Civilian for example seems like it might be able to bunch up clothing material in a problematic way...

There is an inexpensive Lansky sharpener made just for Cold Steel serrations available on Amazon and elsewhere.
Yes sir but I found the Spyderco sharp maker works for most serrations and it seems kind of weird to buy a brand specific sharpener .
This is a classic, due in part to the young man's speechless reaction.
